Rice is a known bioaccumulator of methylmercury (MeHg). Rice consumption may be the primary pathway of MeHg exposure in certain mercury (Hg)-contaminated areas of the world. Pakistan is the 4th-largest rice exporter in the world after India, Thailand, and Vietnam. This study aimed to evaluate the Hg contamination status of rice from Pakistan and the health risks associated with Hg exposure through its consumption. 500 rice grain samples were collected from two major rice-growing provinces, Punjab and Sindh, which contain 92% of Pakistan’s rice cultivation area. Analysis of polished rice showed mean total Hg (THg) concentration of 4.51 ng.g⁻¹, while MeHg concentrations of selected samples averaged 3.71 ng.g⁻¹. Only 2% of the samples exceeded the permissible limit of 20 ng.g⁻¹. Samples collected from Punjab showed higher Hg contents than those from Sindh, possibly due to higher rates of urbanization and industrialization. Rice samples collected from areas near brick-making kilns had the highest Hg concentrations due to emissions from the low-quality coal burned. THg and MeHg contents varied by up to five and fourfold, respectively, between point and non-point Hg pollution sites. Moreover, the %Hg as MeHg in rice did not differ significantly between point and non-point Hg sources. Health risk was assessed by calculating a mean probable daily intake, revealing that Hg intake through rice consumption is within the safe limits recommended by the World Health Organization. However, rice intake may be a substantive pathway of MeHg exposure because fish, which are another major source of Hg, are consumed in Pakistan at some of the world’s lowest rates. This study provides fundamental data for further understanding of the global issue of Hg contamination of rice and its related health risks. Furthermore, the current study suggests there is a need to conduct further research in rice-growing areas at the regional level.

As a result of metal mining activities in Pakistan, toxic heavy metals (HMs) such as chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb) often enter the soil ecosystem, accumulate in food crops and cause serious human health and environmental issues. Therefore, this study examined the efficacy of biochar for contaminated soil remediation. Poplar wood biochar (PWB) and sugarcane bagasse biochar (SCBB) were amended to mine-contaminated agricultural soil at 3% and 7% (wt/wt) application rates. Lactuca sativa (Lettuce) was cultivated in these soils in a greenhouse, and uptake of HMs (Cr and Pb) as well as biomass produced were measured. Subsequently, health risks were estimated from uptake data. When amended at 7%, both biochars significantly (P<0.01) reduced plant uptake of Cr and Pb in amended soil with significant (P<0.01) increase in biomass of lettuce as compared to the control. Risk assessment results showed that both biochars decreased the daily intake of metals (DIM) and associated health risk due to consumption of lettuce as compared to the control. The Pb human health risk index (HRI) for adults and children significantly (P<0.01) decreased with sugarcane bagasse biochar applied at 7% rate relative to other treatments (including the control). Relative to controls, the SCBB and PWB reduced Cr and Pb uptake in lettuce by 69%, 73.7%, respectively, and Pb by 57% and 47.4%, respectively. For both amendments, HRI values for Cr were within safe limits for adults and children. HRI values for Pb were not within safe limits except for the sugarcane bagasse biochar applied at 7%. Results of the study indicated that application of SCBB at 7% rate to mine impacted agricultural soil effectively increased plant biomass and reduced bioaccumulation, DIM and associated HRI of Cr and Pb as compared to other treatments and the control.

Rapid economic growth, urban sprawl, and unplanned industrialization has increased socioeconomic statuses but also decreased air quality in South Asian developing countries. Therefore, severe increase in air pollution has been a threat of local population, regarding health statuses, livability and quality of life. It is necessary to estimate fine-scale spatiotemporal distribution of ambient PM₂.₅ in a national context so that the environmental planners and government officials can use it for environmental protocol development and policy-making. In this study, a spatiotemporal land use regression (LUR) model is developed to refine global air quality data to the national-scale ambient PM₂.₅ exposure in a high-density country in South Asia – Pakistan. Combining with transport network, patterns of land use, local meteorological conditions, geographic characteristics, landscape characteristics, and satellite-derived data, our resultant model explains 54.5% of the variation in ambient PM₂.₅ concentration level. Furthermore, tree coverage and road transport are identified to be two influential factors of the national-scale spatial variation of PM₂.₅ in Pakistan, which implied that urbanization might be the major cause of air pollution across the country. In conclusion, our resultant LUR model as well as the spatial map of ambient PM₂.₅ concentration level can be used as a supporting tool for national health risk management and environmental planning, and could also contribute to the air quality management and pollution reduction actions of Pakistan.

The study objective is to contemplate the effectiveness of COVID-19 on the air pollution of Indian territory from January 2020 to April 2020. We have executed data from European Space Agency (ESA) and CPCB online portal for air quality data dissemination. The Sentinel – 5 P satellite images elucidate that the Air quality of Indian territory has been improved significantly during COVID-19. Mumbai and Delhi are one of the most populated cities. These two cities have observed a substantial decrease in Nitrogen Dioxide (40–50%) compared to the same period last year. It suggests that the emergence of COVID-19 has been proved to a necessary evil as being advantageous for mitigating air pollution on Indian territory during the lock-down. The study found a significant decline in Nitrogen Dioxide in reputed states of India, i.e., Delhi and Mumbai. Moreover, a faded track of Nitrogen Dioxide can be seen at the Maritime route in the Indian Ocean. An upsurge in the environmental quality of India will also be beneficial for its neighbor countries, i.e., China, Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan.

To date limited information’s are available concerning unintentional productions, screening, profiling, and health risks of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in ambient environment and occupational environment. Literature reveals that dust is a neglected environmental matrix never measured for PCNs. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the concentrations and health risks of PCNs in indoor dust, air, and blood of major e-waste recycling hubs in Pakistan. Indoor air (n = 125), dust (n = 250), and serum (n = 250) samples were collected from five major e-waste hubs and their vicinity to measure 39 PCN congeners using GC-ECNI-MS. ∑₃₉PCN concentrations in indoor air, dust, and serum (worker > resident > children) samples ranged from 7.0 to 9583 pg/m³, from 0.25 to 697 ng/g, and from 0.15 to 401 pg/g lipid weight, respectively. Predominant PCN congeners in indoor air and dust were tri- and tetra-CNs, while tetra- and penta-CNs were dominant in human serum samples. The higher PCNs contribution was recorded at the recycling units, while the lower was observed at the shops of the major e-waste hubs. Higher contribution of combustion origin CNs in air, dust and human samples showed combustion sources at the major e-waste hubs, while Halowax and Aroclor based technical mixture showed minor contribution in these samples. Mean toxic equivalent (TEQ) concentrations of PCNs were 2.79E⁺⁰⁰ pg-TEQ/m³, 1.60E⁻⁰² ng-TEQ/g, 8.11E⁻⁰¹ pg-TEQ/g, 7.14E⁻⁰¹ pg-TEQ/g, and 6.37E⁻⁰¹ pg-TEQ/g for indoor air, dust, and serum samples from workers, residents, and children, respectively. In our study, CNs- 66/67 and −73 in indoor air, dust, and human serum were the great contributors to total TEQ concentrations of PCNs. This first base line data directs government and agencies to implement rules, regulation to avoid negative health outcomes and suggests further awareness in regard of provision of proper knowledge to the target population.

The heavy metal pollution status of oyster reefs has been assessed with respect to ten metals pollutants in seawater, sediments, and tissues of above two oysters (soft tissues and shells) for assessing the pollution status in a short food chain in Hab River Delta. The results showed that heavy metals accumulated in M. bilineata were higher than those in M. cuttackensis. Simultaneously, the population of M. bilineata species has been ironically decreasing as a results of high pollution. The determined concentrations revealed a significant differences in their profiles among sediments, seawater and bioaccumulation in tissues and shells of two native oysters. The present study also compared these metal concentrations with national and international database by applying different pollution indices. Heavy metals in all samples were above the national environmental quality standards (NEQS-Pakistan). High level of pollution with an alarming condition of Hab River Delta need more attention for coastal management.

In the developing world, rapid urbanization and industrialization produces an enormous volume of wastes daily. This study was aimed to explore the potential and risks associated with sewage sludge through the characterization and fractionation technique. Sewage sludge samples were collected from various wastewater treatment in five different cities of Pakistan. Considerable amounts of macro-elements were detected in all types of sewage sludge samples. The pHw of all sewage sludge were neutral to slightly alkaline in reaction. Total organic carbon (TOC) was maximum (18.73%) with Coca-Cola sewage sludge (CSS) while the minimum (14.69%) was with Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) sewage sludge (WSS). Percent relative distribution of cadmium (Cd) was higher in residual fraction (F4) up to 52% in the Nestle wastewater treatment plant, Sheikhupura (NSS). The chromium (Cr) concentration in Kasur sewage sludge (KSS) was extremely in mobile fraction (exchangeable) as compared with all other sludge samples, therefore showing a higher level of risk assessment code. While in the case of Iron (Fe), mobility was less and its maximum portion was noted in residual fraction (F4) of all sewage sludge samples. Percent distribution of manganese (Mn) showed variable trends for different sewage sludge samples. Zinc (Zn) concentration showed high mobility (exchangeable fraction) in case of NUST wastewater treatment plant, Islamabad (NTS) (31.16%) and WSS (37.83%) as compared with other sewage sludges. The risk assessment code indicated that Zn and Ni had a medium level of risk with I-9 Sector wastewater treatment plant, Islamabad (ISS), CSS, KSS, and NSS whereas these pose a high risk with NTS and WSS. Based on physicochemical properties, nutrients, trace elements, mobility, and risk assessment code, it was concluded that KSS should not be recommended at any application rate while NTS and WSS may be used at low application rates whereas ISS, CSS, and NSS may be used for agricultural crop production.

This study uses ecological modernization and environmental transition theories to estimate the interaction among energy intensity, carbon emission and urbanization for the period of 1980–2017. We have systematically examined the empirical connections among emission, urbanization, income per capita, imports, exports, energy use, trade openness and energy intensity. The Johnson co-integration and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) causality methods are employed for the sake of analysis. Overall findings confirm the dynamic and U-shaped relationship between emission and urbanization, and carbon emission and income per capita. The empirical results of urbanization, inflation and financial development illustrate positive association with the energy intensity, whereas trade openness, labour force participation and carbon emission show a negative association with the dependent variable. Moreover, outcomes of causality analysis provide evidence of varied causality link among the variables across the models. The study provides the implications for the decision makers in Pakistan to choose new urbanization patterns that are less reliant on energy consumption.

This study evaluates the characteristics of water along the Swat River, Northern Pakistan. For this purpose, water samples (n = 30) were collected and analyzed for physicochemical parameters including heavy metals (HM). The mean concentrations of physicochemical parameters and HM were within the drinking water guideline values set by the World Health Organization (WHO 2011) except 34%, 60%, and 56% of copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb), respectively. Pollution sources were identified by various multivariate statistical techniques including correlation analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) indicating different origins both naturally and anthropogenically. Results of the water quality index (WQI) ranged from 13.58 to 209 with an average value of 77 suggesting poor water quality for drinking and domestic purposes. The poor water quality was mainly related to high sodium (alkalinity) and salinity hazards showing > 27% and 20% water samples have poor alkalinity and salinity hazards, respectively. Hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) were used to determine the health risk of HM in the study area. For water-related health risk, HQᵢₙgₑₛₜᵢₒₙ, HQdₑᵣₘₐₗ, and HI values were > 1, indicating noncarcinogenic health risk (NCR) posed by these HM to the exposed population.
