Frequent drought events and particulate matter pollution from vehicular exhaust seriously affect urban plant growth and provisioning of ecological services. Yet, how plants respond physiologically and morphologically to these two combined stressors remains unknown. Here, we assessed particle retention dynamics and plant morphology and physiology of Euonymus japonicus Thunb. var. aurea-marginatus Hort. under continuous drought with severe exhaust exposure. Our results showed that continuous drought insignificantly lowered particle retention in each of three size fractions by 1.02 μg·cm⁻² on average in the first 28 days, but significantly lowered total particle retention by 35.75 μg·cm⁻² on the 35th day. We observed evident changes in morphology, leaf mass per area (LMA), pigments, gas exchange in all stressed plants. Compared with single stress, combined drought and pollution caused earlier yellowing and shedding of old leaves, significantly lowered LMA by 1.21 mg·cm⁻², caused a greater decline in pigments and net photosynthetic rate (Pₙ). Large particles may mainly explain pigment reduction, lower weekly LMA increases, and stomatal restriction, while coarse particles may be the main drivers of the decline in Pₙ. Continuous drought mediated the influence of all three particle sizes on some parameters, such as weakening the impact of total particles on LMA, strengthening the impact of fine particles on photosynthesis. Our findings suggest that drought accelerates the physiological responses of plants to exhaust pollution. Under controlled severe exhaust pollution conditions, the optimal time to maintain high particle retention during continuous drought without decline in physiological conditions for E. japonicus var. aurea-marginatus was 14 days. Some additional interventions after 14 days (it could be postponed appropriately under field conditions) may help ensure healthy growth of plants and retention of particulate matter.

The application of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) to control harmful algal blooms is affected by algal density and species. In the present study, a simulation field study was carried out to evaluate the removal of cyanobacteria with high algal density (chlorophyll a of approximately 220–250 μg/L) and low algal density (chlorophyll a of approximately 30–50 μg/L) using 10, 20 mg/L H₂O₂ and 5 mg/L H₂O₂. The dynamics of algal biomass, nutrients, microcystins, phytoplankton, and zooplankton were measured within 7 d. The results showed that 5 mg/L H₂O₂ effectively eliminated algal biomass (measured as chlorophyll a and phycocyanin) and inhibited 50% of the photosynthetic activity of the cyanobacteria at 7 d in the low algal cell density group, while the same inhibition rate was observed in the high algal cell density group when the H₂O₂ was 20 mg/L. However, using a high dosage of H₂O₂, such as 10 mg/L, to suppress cyanobacteria with high biomass could result in a dramatic increase in nutrients and microcystins in the water column. The portion of eukaryotic algae, such as Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta and Euglenophyta, in the phytoplankton community increased with increasing H₂O₂ concentrations; moreover, the dominant species of cyanobacteria changed from the nontoxic genus Dactylococcopsis to the toxic genus Oscillatoria, which may result in acute toxicity to zooplankton. Our results demonstrated that the application of H₂O₂ to control cyanobacterial blooms at the early stage when algal cell density was low posed less potential ecological risks and may have increased the diversity of the phytoplankton community.

Microplastics and nanoplastics are distributed in the environments universally. The interrelationship between vascular plants and micro/nanoplastics began to attract attention in recent years. Based on the relevant literatures collected from various databases, this review focuses on two topics: 1) the effect of vascular plants on the fate of micro/nanoplastics; 2) the effects of micro/nanoplastics on vascular plants. The review of the available studies reveals that vascular plants can act as sinks for microplastics and nanoplastics as their surfaces can adsorb these plastics; moreover, nanoplastics can be internalized by plants. Plastics on the surfaces and in the interiors of vascular plants can cause various phytotoxicity effects, including impacts on growth, photosynthesis, and oxidative stress. Furthermore, the results and mechanisms of phytotoxicity effects caused by microplastics or nanoplastics can be very different. However, knowledge gaps still exist in the relationships between micro/nanoplastics and vascular plants based on the analysis of available studies; thus, potential subjects for future studies were proposed, including the fates, analysis methods, influencing factors, mechanisms of phytotoxicity, and further influences of microplastics and nanoplastics in the vascular plant ecosystems. This study presents a review of micro/nanoplastics–vascular plant research and reaches a basis for future research.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂NPs) application in variety of commercial products would likely release these NPs into the environment. The interaction of TiO₂NPs with terrestrial plants upon uptake can disturb plants functional traits and can also transfer to the food chain members. In this study, we investigated the impact of TiO₂NPs on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants functional traits, primary macronutrients assimilation, and change in the profile of bio-macromolecule. Moreover, the mechanism of biochar-TiO₂NPs interaction, immobilization, and tissue accumulation to cell translocation of NPs in plants was also explored. The results indicated that the contents of Ti in wheat tissues was reduced about 3-fold and the Ti transfer rate (per day) was reduced about 2 fold at the 1000 mg L⁻¹ exposure level of TiO₂NPs in biochar amended exposure medium. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with elemental mapping confirmed that Ti concentrated in plant tissues in nano-form. The interactive effect of TiO₂NPs + biochar amendment on photosynthesis related and gas exchange traits was observed at relatively low TiO₂NPs exposure level (200 mg L⁻¹), which induced the positive impact on wheat plants proliferation. TiO₂NPs alone exposure to wheat also modified the plant’s bio-macromolecules profile with the reduction in the assimilation of primary macronutrients, which could affect the food crop nutritional value and quality. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) chemical analysis of biochar + TiO₂NPs showed an additional peak, which indicated the binding interaction of NPs with biochar. Moreover, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed that the biochar carboxyl group is the main functionality involved in the bonding process with TiO₂NPs. These findings will help for a mechanistic understanding of the role of biochar in the reduction of NPs bioavailability to primary producers of the terrestrial environment.

Ozone-induced changes in the relationship between photosynthesis (Aₙ) and stomatal conductance (gₛ) vary among species, leading to inconsistent water use efficiency (WUE) responses to elevated ozone (O₃). Thus, few vegetation models can accurately simulate the effects of O₃ on WUE. Here, we conducted an experiment exposing two differently O₃-sensitive species (Cotinus coggygria and Magnolia denudata) to five O₃ concentrations and investigated the impact of O₃ exposure on predicted WUE using a coupled Aₙ-gₛ model. We found that increases in stomatal O₃ uptake caused linear reductions in the maximum rates of Rubisco carboxylation (Vcₘₐₓ) and electron transport (Jₘₐₓ) in both species. In addition, a negative linear correlation between O₃-induced changes in the minimal gₛ of the stomatal model (g₀) derived from the theory of optimal stomatal behavior and light-saturated photosynthesis was found in the O₃-sensitive M. denudata. When the O₃ dose-based responses of Vcₘₐₓ and Jₘₐₓ were included in a coupled Aₙ-gₛ model, simulated Aₙ under elevated O₃ were in good agreement with observations in both species. For M. denudata, incorporating the O₃ response of g₀ into the coupled model further improved the accuracy of the simulated gₛ and WUE. In conclusion, the modified Vcₘₐₓ, Jₘₐₓ and g₀ method presented here provides a foundation for improving the prediction for O₃-induced changes in Aₙ, gₛ and WUE.

Six ecotypes of Typha domingensis Pers. Jahlar (E₁), Sheikhupura (E₂), Sahianwala (E₃), Gatwala (E₄), Treemu (E₅) and Knotti (E₆) from different ecological regions were collected to evaluate the leaf anatomical and biochemical attributes under different levels of salinity and nickel stress viz; L₀ (control), L₁ (100 mM + 50 mg kg⁻¹), L₂ (200 mM + 100 mg kg⁻¹) and L₃ (300 mM + 150 mg kg⁻¹). Presence of salt and Ni in rooting medium consistently affected growth, anatomical and physio-biochemical attributes in all Typha ecotypes. Discrete anatomical modifications among ecotypes such as reduced leaf thickness, increased parenchyma area, metaxylem cell area, aerenchyma formation and improved metaxylem vessels were recorded with increasing dose of salt and Ni. The minimum anatomical damages were recorded in E₁ and E₆ ecotypes. In all ecotypes, progressive perturbations in ionic homeostasis (Na⁺, K⁺, Cl⁻, N) due to salt and metal toxicity were evident along with reduction in photosynthetic pigments. Maximum enhancement in Catalase (CAT), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Peroxidase (POD) and modulated Malondialdehyde (MDA) activity was recorded in E₁ and E₆ as compared to other ecotypes. Accumulation of large amounts of metabolites such as total soluble sugars, total free amino acids content in Jahlar, Knotti, Treemu and Sahianawala ecotypes under different levels of salt and Ni prevented cellular damages in T. domingensis Pers. The correlation analysis exhibited a close relationship among different levels of salinity and Ni with various plant attributes. PCA-Biplot verified our correlational analysis among various attributes of Typha ecotypes. An obvious separation of Typha characters in response to different salinity and Ni levels was exhibited by PC1. We recommend that genetic potential of T. domingensis Pers. To grow under salt and Ni stresses must be investigated and used for phytoremediation and reclamation of contaminated soil.

The B-type cyclin gene, CycB2, serves as a negative regulator of glandular trichome initiation. Through targeted knockout of NtCycB2 in Nicotiana tabacum cv. K326 using the CRISPR/Cas9 system, we created a variety, HK326, which exhibits significantly increased density and larger glandular heads of long glandular trichomes. Under Cd-stress, HK326 exhibited enhanced Cd tolerance, as demonstrated by a robust root system, strengthened cell membrane stability, and higher photosynthetic parameters. HK326 exhibited enhanced Cd-stress tolerance due to a strong excretion capacity of long glandular trichomes by forming calcium oxalate crystals. Cd mainly accumulated in tobacco shoots rather than remained in roots. Specifically, Cd levels of the HK326 shoot surface were nearly two-fold of those of K326, resulting in less Cd internally in the roots and shoots. Gene expression patterns revealed 11 Cd transporter genes that were upregulated after Cd-stress in shoots, roots, and trichomes. Among them, the NtHMA2 gene encoding heavy metal ATPases and involved in the transport of divalent heavy metal cations was expressed consistently and significantly higher in HK326 than K326, both before and after Cd-stress. NtHMA2 expression was strong in trichomes, moderate in shoots, while weak in roots. The results indicate that NtHMA2 may be involved in Cd excretion from glandular trichomes. Our findings suggest HK326 may be an appropriate candidate plant for Cd-stress tolerance.

Atmospheric warming and increasing tropospheric ozone (O₃) concentrations often co-occur in many cities of the world including China, adversely affecting the health status of urban trees. However, little information is known about the combined and interactive effects from increased air temperature (IT) and elevated O₃ (EO) exposures on urban tree species. Here, Ginkgo biloba and Populus alba ‘Berolinensis’ seedlings were subjected to IT (+2 °C of ambient air temperature) and/or EO (+2-fold ambient air O₃ concentrations) for one growing season by using open-top chambers. IT alone had no significant effect on physiological metabolisms at the early growing stage, but significantly increased photosynthetic parameters, antioxidative enzyme activities (P < 0.05). EO alone decreased physiological parameters except for increased oxidative stress. Compared to EO exposure alone, plants grown under IT and EO combined showed higher antioxidative and photosynthetic activity. There was a significant interactive effect between IT and EO on net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency, the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry, the actual quantum efficiency of PSII, enzyme activities, aboveground biomass and root/shoot ratio (P < 0.05), respectively. These results suggested that during one growing season, IT mitigated the adverse effect of EO on the tested plants. In addition, we found that G. biloba was more sensitive than P. alba ‘Berolinensis’ to both IT and EO, suggesting that G. biloba may be a good indicator species for climate warming and air pollution, particularly under environmental conditions as they co-occur in urban areas.

Antarctic melt streams are important ecosystems that increasingly face contaminant pressures from anthropogenic sources. Metal contaminants are often reported in the limno-terrestrial environment but their speciation is not well characterised, making environmental risk assessments difficult. This paper characterises labile metal concentrations in five melt streams and three shallow lakes around the Casey and Wilkes research stations in East Antarctica using chemical extracts and field deployments of diffusive gradients in thin-film (DGT) samplers. An acute toxicity test with field-collected Ceratadon purpeus and taxonomic identification of diatoms in melt streams were used to infer environmental risk. Copper and zinc were the most labile metals in the melt streams. DGT-labile copper concentrations were up to 3 μg Cu L⁻¹ in melt-stream waters but not labile below the sediment-water interface. DGT-labile zinc concentrations were consistent above and below the sediment-water interface at concentrations up to 14 μg Zn L⁻¹ in four streams, but one stream showed evidence of zinc mineralisation in the sediment with a flux to overlying and pore waters attributed to the reductive dissolution of iron and manganese oxides. Other metals, such as chromium, nickel, and lead were acid-extractable from the sediments, but not labile in pore waters or overlying waters. All streams had unique compositions of freshwater diatoms, but one had particularly reduced diversity and richness, which correlated to metal contamination and sediment physico-chemical properties such as a finer particle size. In laboratory bioassays with field-collected samples of the Antarctic moss C. purpeus, there was no change in photosynthetic efficiency following 28-d exposure to 700, 900, 1060, or 530 μg L⁻¹ of cadmium, copper, nickel, and zinc, respectively. This study shows that microorganisms such as diatoms may be at greater risk from contaminants than mosses, and highlights the importance of geochemical factors controlling metal lability.

Plastic pollution is a global issue posing a threat to marine biota with ecological implications on ecosystem functioning. Micro and nanoplastic impact on phytoplankton autotrophic species (e.g., cell growth inhibition, decrease in chlorophyll a and photosynthetic efficiency and hetero-aggregates formation) have been largely documented. However, the heterogeneity of data makes rather difficult a comparison based on size (i.e. micro vs nano). In addition, knowledge gaps on the ecological impact on phytoplankton assemblage structure and functioning are evident. A new virtual meta-analysis on cause-effect relationships of micro and nanoplastics on phytoplankton species revealed the significant effect posed by polymer type on reducing cell density for tested PVC, PS and PE plastics. Linked with autotrophic phytoplankton role in atmospheric CO₂ fixation, a potential impact of plastics on marine carbon pump is discussed. The understanding of the effects of microplastics and nanoplastics on the phytoplankton functioning is fundamental to raise awareness on the overall impact on the first level of marine food web. Interactions between micro and nanoplastics and phytoplankton assemblages have been quite documented by in vitro examinations; but, further studies considering natural plankton assemblages and/or large mesocosm experiments should be performed to evaluate and try predicting ecological impacts on primary producers.
