Estimation of the phytoplankton quantity in the area of the Montenegrin coastal sea as a consequence of eutrophication

Investigations of phytoplankton were done in the shallow Montenegrin coastal sea during the period from June to December, 2002. These investigations were the continuation from the preceding years. The main intention was to establish the impact of eutrophication to the quantity and composition of phytoplankton i.e. to establish the difference between areas in the bay and outside the bay. Like is previous years, the highest quantities of phytoplankton - microphytoplankton above all, were found in the area of the Boka Kotorska Bay (in Kotor Bay), Montenegro (Serbia&Montenegro). In July, 2.1 x 10**6 cells/cubic dm were found with dominant species Leptocylindrus minimus represented with 1.4 x 10**6 cells/cubic dm. In the area outside the Bay of Boka Kotorska, exposed to the impact of the open sea, values were significantly lower. In front of Budva, maximum was 1.7 x 10**5 cells/cubic dm in July. At locality exposed to the influence of the river Bojana (brackish water), similar values were established, except in October when 1.1 x 10**6 cells/cubic dm were found.

During the period February 1999 - February 2000 samples of water taken monthly from the area before the outflow of river Crn Drim from the Lake Ohrid, in purpose of qualitative and quantitative investigation of phytoplankton community. During the period of investigation, the phytoplankton community was characterized by forms of Cyanophyta, Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Chrysophyta, Pyrrophyta and Euglenophyta. Qualitative analysis indicated that algae of the division Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta are dominant in the phytoplankton, while the results of the qualitative analysis showed that forms of Bacillariophyta are dominant. Seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton is characterized by autumnal and winter domination of Bacillariophyta, spring maximum of Chrysophyta and summer domination of Pyrrophyta. The total number of algae varied between 1500-95,700 ind/l in August and February 2000, respectively.

In the period October 2001 through November 2002 in six series parallely with physico-chemical and hydrobiological analyses, the content of photosynthetic pigments was determined in algae in the region of flow-through reservoirs of "Djerdap 1" and "Djerdap 2" on the profiles of Smederevo, Ram, Veliko Gradista, Donji Milanovac, Tekija, Kladovo and Radujevac. The samples were taken by a pump from the river midstream at the depth of 1-0 m (composite sample), while in the vegetation period April, June and September, the samples were taken at the depth of 5 m. The peak concentration of chlorophyll-a, the biological indicator of trophic condition, was recorded in the month of April in the Smederevo profile (30.2 mg/cubic meter) at the depth of 1-0 m. The lowest values of chlorophyll-a in all studied cycles were recorded in the Radujevac profile (below the dams) with the mean annual value of 1.8 mg/cubic meter. Chlorophyll-c occurs as the subdominant photosynthetic pigment. Values of chlorophyll-c were higher than chlorophyll-a in the month of June on the Donji Milanovac profile in the analysed sample taken at the depth of 5 m. Higher values of chlorophyll-b were recorded in the course of the vegetation period in the month of June on the profiles of Smederevo, Ram, Veliko Gradiste and Donji Milanovac at the depth of 1-0 m.

The results of the examination point out on heterogenity of the phytoplankton community. The presence of 212 taxa has been noted. In the way of quality the green algae are dominant. In all the aspects of the quantitative analysis the domination of Bacillariophyta has been noted, first of all the centric forms. The amount of nutrients on the locality of border with Hungary is considerable, thus during low water and high temperature, the intensive algae development is usual.

The river Crnojevica is a subject of lasting manny years physicochemical and microbiological investigations, which show worring pollutants presence into the water current. This work represent preliminary investigations of Crnojevica river water algal flora (phytoplankton and phytoperiphyton), carrying out over summer period of 2004. Aim of the investigation was to point, based on algal analysis, as reliable indicators of water quality and ecological status of an aquatorius, the need to protect the river from permanent communal and industrial waste water pollution. The hyperproduction of phytoplankton in the investigation period was stated, but it varys along the current, in accordance with efluent inflow. On the base of saprobiological analysis of phytoplankton, determinated water quality was in class 2, till the worse was noted at T2 measure place, on the inflow place of Rijeka Crnojevica settlements sewage.

There are presented the results of investigations carried out in the Kotor Bay (Adriatic Sea), Montenegro (Serbia and Montenegro) during the winter months of 2004. The highest value of microphytoplankton as a greater size-fraction of phytoplankton is found in the surface layer during March (1.4 x 10**7 cells/cubic dm). The main edificator was diatomic species Skeletonema costatum with relative percentage about 100%. Obtained results point out that Kotor Bay belongs to the highest eutrophic or extreme eutrophic area. Similar result is found in the same period twenty years ago.

Eutrophicationn problems in the Kotor bay were studied monthly from September 2003 to August 2004. As a result of nutrient enrichment (directly dependent on human activities), phytoplankton growth was very intensive, reflected by high concentration of chlorophyll a (7.46 mg/cubic m).

During several years of hydrobiological investigation of the Zapadna Morava river the Medjuvrsje and Stancici localities stood out; the most favourable water quality was registered with the Medjuvrsje reservoir (being constantly of the class 2), whilst, according to all the data obtained over the years, water quality of the Zapadna Morava at Stancici locality was the worts. The Medjuvrsje reservoir is in stable eutrophic phase. The saprobic index value points to a certain water quality improvement. Floristic diversity in the locality of Stancici increased over the years. An increase in the percental share of the oligosaprobity indicator indicates a certain organic load decrease and an improving water quality trend was recorded as indicated by lower saprobic index values.

In this paper we have presented the results of the investigation of phytoplankton carried out in the Hydrosystem DTD (Danube - Tisza - Danube) in Banat region from April 2003 till November 2004. Accordingly, halophilic algae community of eutrophic type has been described. Seasonal distribution and presence of algae taxa in the investigated water varied significantly. The diatoms were mostly represented by periphytic forms in the huge quantities, which was particularly the case with an avalanche of the eutrophic species such as: Bacillaria paradoxa, Anomoeoneis sphaerophora, Nitzschia acicularis, N. palea, Navicula cryptocephala, Fragilaria ulna, Melosira varians, Surirella ovalis, etc. The significant number of Cyclotella meneghiniana during summer and Euglenophyta in autumn revealed high trophic status in some sections of HS DTD.

The research of phytoplankton in water of Hydrosystem DTD in Banat region (canal complex and the rivers Zlatica, Old Begej) has been carried out seasonally i.e. in the spring, summer, autumn and winter of 2003 and 2004. According to guidance of Anon (2003) we selected biological element - phytoplankton in establishing referral body of water with maximum ecological potential (MEP) of the Danube-Tisza-Danube Hydrosystem also classified as artificial/heavily modified water. Classification was made according to Sorensen indices of similarity. Reference conditions with MEP were assigned to the HS DTD, canal Banatska Palanka - Novi Becej, Novi Becej - Melenci stretch. As determined by phytoplankton analyses, investigated canals and rivers could be classified as waters of good ecological potential, except the rivers Zlatica, Stari Begej (Old Begej) and some sections of the Canal Plovni Begej (Navigable Begej) what was designated to moderate ecological potential.
