The rural domestic waste (RDW) compost has been widely used in agriculture and horticulture, but little is known about microplastics (MPs) in RDW composting. The current work deals with the abundance and characteristics of MPs in RDW composting, and the effects of composting processes on the composition of MPs. Compost samples from two RDW treatment stations were investigated, and a lab-scale experiment was carried out to verify the possible release of MPs from macroplastics (>25 mm) contained in the RDW during composting. MPs were identified using stereo-microscope and μ-FTIR. The average abundance of MPs (0.05–5 mm) in the RDW compost products was 2400 ± 358 items/kg (dry weight), and the main MPs shapes were fibers and films. Polyester, polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) were the most common polymer types. MPs having a size <1 mm accounted for more than 50% of the total quantity. With the progress of composting, the proportion of MPs having size <1 mm increased, and more foam MPs were observed in the late stage of composting. Under the influence of mechanical force, oxidation and biodegradation, a piece of expanded polystyrene (EPS), PP and PE macroplastic could release 4–63 MPs particles during the composting. Thus, the RDW compost was a significant source of MPs in soils, and the MPs in compost products were closely related to the quantity and type of plastic waste present in RDW, which helped to suggest better MPs control strategies.

Synthetic fibers with diameters of several tens of micrometers are the most abundant type of microplastics in the marine environment, yet the most unknown regarding dynamics in the water column. Experiments proposed here are a proof-of-concept of qualitative and quantitative characteristics of fibers’ motion in still water and in the presence of thermal convection. For 12 sets of fine fibers (nylon (1.12 g/cm³) and polyester (1.35 g/cm³), 1.9–14.8 mm long, diameters 13 and 20 μm), 84 measurements of sinking velocity in still water were acquired. In still conditions, fibers settled smoothly and slowly, preserving their initial (accidental) orientation. Sinking rates of fibers with lengths <5 mm varied between 0.5 and 3.7 mm/s (the bulk mean of 1.6 mm/s). Fibers with similar properties showed 4-fold different sinking velocity, which is supposed to be the effect of their different orientation while settling: vertically oriented fibers (19% in the experiments) settled faster than those with inclined orientation (48%), and horizontally oriented fibers (33%) settled with the smallest velocities.Convective mixing of water, heated from below, principally changed the manner of sinking of fibers: their motions became unsteady and 3-dimensional. In 78 measurements for 4-mm long nylon fibers (using the “light knife” technique), only about 56% of fibers showed downward velocity component (mean 1.33 ± 0.78 mm/s), which was twice as small as in still water, however the ratio of max/min values increased up to 14. Fibers could move in different directions and follow circular motions of a convective cell. Our findings suggest two possible mechanisms retaining fibers in the water column: entrainment of some particles in horizontal and vertical motions and slowed sinking due to unsteady flow around the fiber. The retention of fibers leads to decrease in integral downward particle flux (up to 4 times in our experiments).

As filter feeders, bivalve mollusks have a high potential risk of contamination by microplastics (MPs), which can be considered a transfer vector for humans through their consumption. Spatial-temporal differences in the MP concentration were evaluated in the cultured oyster Magallana gigas in Todos Santos Bay (TSB) and San Quintin Bay (SQB) during winter and summer (2019). MPs were found in all samples in both seasons, where microfibers were the most abundant particles observed. Only in winter, statistically significant differences were observed in the average concentration of ingested MPs between oysters from TSB and SQB. In each bay, the highest concentrations were observed during winter. Seasonal differences between MP concentrations were only found in TSB. During summer, the content of MPs was compared between the digestive system and the rest of the soft tissue in organisms from each site, and statistically significant differences were not observed, except by one site in SQB. Polymers were identified via μ-FTIR-ATR spectrometry. Polyester, polyacrylonitrile, and rayon were the most common plastics detected. However, due to the low concentration of MPs found in oysters, its consumption does not represent a risk to human health. Moreover, MP concentrations in organisms appear to respond to variables, such as temporality and the water circulation dynamics within the bays.

This study reports the shapes, dimensional classes, types and counts of microplastics (MPs) found in 23 individuals of N. norvegicus collected from two wild populations of the Adriatic Sea (Mediterranean basin). The focus was on three different anatomical compartments (gut, hepatopancreas and tail), which were analysed separately. MPs were found in all the investigated individuals with an average of about 17 MPs/individual. Fragments were predominant over fibers with a ratio of about 3:1. The majority of MPs were in the dimensional range 50–100 μm. The predominant polymers were polyester, polyamide 6, polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene, which together constitute about 61% of all the MPs found. Fragments were more concentrated in the hepatopancreas, with no significant difference between gut and tail, while fibers were more concentrated in the gut than in the tail with hepatopancreas somehow in between. The dimensional class of the MPs influences their anatomical distribution. There were no statistical differences among individuals from the two sampling sites. Sex of the individual did not influence the level of retained MPs, while length had a very marginal effect. The information reported here contributes to understanding of the possible risks linked to human consumption of different tissues from contaminated Norway lobsters.

Microplastic (MP) pollution in the environment has aroused great concern. However, our knowledge of MP abundance and distribution in soil environment is scarce. This work investigated the MPs in the farmland and grassland at a remote area of China, namely, the eastern area of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP). The average numbers of MPs were 53.2 ± 29.7 and 43.9 ± 22.3 items/kg in shallow and deep soil, respectively, from 35 soil samples. A remarkable difference in MP abundances was observed among soil samples from mulch farmland, greenhouses, farmland without covering, and grassland. The MPs were mostly in the form of a film and transparent in color in this study. The dominant polymers of MPs in the soil samples were polyester (PE) and polypropylene (PP). This study revealed the characteristics of MP distribution among different land use at the QTP, and MPs may stem from the fragmentation of plastic mulch in farmland soil. Notably, MP abundance increased with the increase in mulching time in facility agriculture. Additionally, human disturbances and increased mulching time in facility agriculture promote the fragmentation of soil MPs. This study provides important data for follow-up research on MPs in a plateau terrestrial ecosystem.

Marine and freshwater plastic pollution is a challenging issue receiving large amounts of research and media attention. Yet, few studies have documented the impact of microplastic ingestion to aquatic organisms. In the Pacific Northwest, Chinook salmon are a culturally and commercially significant fish species. The presence of marine and freshwater microplastic pollution is well documented in Chinook salmon habitat, yet no research has investigated the impacts to salmon from microplastic ingestion. The majority of the marine microplastics found in the Salish Sea are microfibers, synthetic extruded polymers that come from commonly worn clothing. To understand the potential impacts of microfiber ingestion to fish, we ran a feeding experiment with juvenile Chinook salmon to determine if ingested fibers are retained or digestion rates altered over a 10 day digestion period. The experiment was completed in two trials, each consisted of 20 control and 20 treatment fish. Treatment fish were each fed an amended ration of 12 food pellets spiked with 20 polyester microfibers and control fish were fed the same ration without added microfibers. Fish were sampled at day 0, 3, 5, 7, and 10 to assess if fibers were retained in their gastrointestinal tract and to determine the rate of digestion. Fibers for the experiment came from washing a red polyester fleece jacket in a microfiber retention bag. Fibers had a mean length of 4.98 mm. Results showed fish were able to clear up to 94% of fed fibers over 10 days. Differences in mean gastrointestinal mass were not statistically significant at any sampled time between treatment and controls, suggesting that the ingestion of microfibers did not alter digestion rates. Further work is needed to understand if repeated exposures, expected in the environment, alter digestion or food assimilation for growth.

Microplastics pollution in the environment is closely determined by the surrounding industrial and human activities. In present study, we investigated microplastics in water and sediment samples collected from a textile industrial area in Shaoxing city, China. The abundance of microplastics varied from 2.1 to 71.0 items/L in surface water samples, and from 16.7 to 1323.3 items/kg (dw) in sediment samples. The polymer type was dominated by polyester both in water (95%) and sediment (79%) samples. The majority of the detected microplastics was predominantly colored fibers smaller than 1 mm in diameter. The high level of microplastic pollution detected in local freshwater and sediment environments was attributed to the production and trading activities of textile industries, for which severe regulations should be envisaged in the future to effectively reduce the local microplastic pollution.

A better understanding of the sources of organophosphate esters (OPEs) is a prerequisite for OPE control and the establishment of related environmental policies. Sources of OPEs in 35 major inflow rivers to the Bohai Sea of China were quantitatively analyzed using three effective receptor models (principal component analysis-multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR), positive matrix factorization (PMF), and Unmix) in this paper. The similarities and differences in results from PCA-MLR, PMF, and Unmix were discussed in depth. All three models well predicted the spatial variability of the total concentrations of nine OPEs (triethyl phosphate, tri-n-butyl phosphate, triisobutyl phosphate, tri (2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate, tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate, tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, and triphenylphosphine oxide) (∑₉OPEs) (r² = 0.90–0.96, p = 0.000) and explained 98.4%–101.2% of the observed ∑₉OPEs. The predicted ∑₉OPEs values from each pairwise model were significantly correlated (r² = 0.88–0.91, p = 0.000). Three OPE sources were extracted by all three models: rigid and flexible polyurethane foam/coating, cellulosic/acrylic/vinyl polymer/unsaturated polyester, and polyvinyl chloride, contributing 49.9%, 29.7%, and 20.5% by PCA-MLR, 57.9%, 28.6%, and 13.5% by PMF, and 47.9%, 30.8%, and 22.4% by Unmix to the ∑₉OPEs, respectively. PMF was recommended as the preferred receptor model for analyzing OPE sources in water during the monitoring period because of its optimal performance.

Although evidence suggests the ubiquity of microplastics in the marine environment, our knowledge of its occurrence within remote habitats, such as the deep sea, is scarce. Furthermore, long term investigations of microplastic abundances are even more limited. Here we present a long-term study of the ingestion of microplastics by two deep-sea benthic invertebrates (Ophiomusium lymani and Hymenaster pellucidus) sampled over four decades. Specimens were collected between the years 1976–2015 from a repeat monitoring site >2000 m deep in the Rockall Trough, North East Atlantic. Microplastics were identified at a relatively consistent level throughout and therefore may have been present at this locality prior to 1976. Considering the mass production of plastics began in the 1940s - 50s our data suggest the relatively rapid occurrence of microplastics within the deep sea. Of the individuals examined (n = 153), 45% had ingested microplastics, of which fibres were most prevalent (95%). A total of eight different polymer types were isolated; polyamide and polyester were found in the highest concentrations and in the majority of years, while low-density polystyrene was only identified in 2015. This study provides an assessment of the historic occurrence of microplastics on the deep seafloor and presents a detailed quantification and characterisation of microplastics ingested by benthic species. Furthermore these data advance our knowledge on the long-term fate of microplastic in marine systems.

Microfiber is a subgroup of microplastics and accounts for a large proportion of microplastics in aquatic environment, especially in municipal effluents. The purpose of the present study was to quantify microfiber shedding from three most populate synthetic textile fabrics: polyester, polyamide, and acetate fabrics. The results showed that more microfibers were released after washing with a pulsator laundry machine than a platen laundry machine. The greatest number of microfibers was released from acetate fabric, which was up to 74,816 ± 10,656 microfibers/m2 per wash, although microfibers were shed from all materials. Moreover, an increasing trend was found in the number of microfibers shedding from synthetic fabrics with the washing temperature increasing, and greater microfiber release occurred when washing fabrics with detergent rather than with water alone. The lint filter bag equipped with the pulsator laundry machine retained the longer microfibers (>1000 μm), but not the shorter microfibers (<500 μm) instead of releasing into the drainage system. Our data suggested that microfibers released during washing of synthetic fabrics may be an important source of microfibers in aquatic environment due to the increasing production and use of synthetic fabrics globally. Thus, more efficient filtering bags or other technologies in household washing machines should be developed to prevent and reduce the release of microfibers from domestic washing.
