Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP), which contains glycoproteins produced by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), as well as non-mycorrhizal-related heat-stable proteins, lipids, and humic materials, is generally categorized into two fractions: easily extractable GRSP (EE-GRSP) and total GRSP (T-GRSP). GRSP plays an important role in soil carbon (C) sequestration and can stabilize heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and manganese (Mn). Soil contamination by heavy metals is occurring in conjunction with rising atmospheric CO2 in natural ecosystems due to human activities. However, the response of GRSP to elevated CO2 combined with heavy metal contamination has not been widely reported. Here, we investigated the response of GRSP to elevated CO2 in the rhizosphere of Robinia pseudoacacia L. seedlings in Pb- and Cd-contaminated soils. Elevated CO2 (700 μmol mol−1) significantly increased T- and EE- GRSP concentrations in soils contaminated with Cd, Pb or Cd + Pb. GRSP contributed more carbon to the rhizosphere soil organic carbon pool under elevated CO2 + heavy metals than under ambient CO2. The amount of Cd and Pb bound to GRSP was significantly higher under elevated (compared to ambient) CO2; and elevated CO2 increased the ratio of GRSP-bound Cd and Pb to total Cd and Pb. However, available Cd and Pb in rhizosphere soil under increased elevated CO2 compared to ambient CO2. The combination of both metals and elevated CO2 led to a significant increase in available Pb in rhizosphere soil compared to the Pb treatment alone. In conclusion, increased GRSP produced under elevated CO2 could contribute to sequestration of soil pollutants by adsorption of Cd and Pb.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are easily influenced by increasing atmospheric CO₂ concentration and heavy metals including cadmium (Cd), which can regulate antioxidant enzyme in host plants. Although the effect of AMF under individual conditions such as elevated CO₂ (ECO₂) and Cd on antioxidant enzyme in host plants has been reported widely, the effect of AMF under ECO₂ + Cd receives little attention. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted to study the effect of AMF community in roots on superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD) activities in leaves of 135-d Robinia pseudoacacia L. seedlings under ECO₂ + Cd. The activities of SOD and CAT increased and POD activity and the richness and diversity of AMF community decreased under ECO₂ + Cd relative to Cd alone. The richness and diversity of AMF were negatively related to Cd content in roots and leaves. The richness and OTUs of AMF community positively and AMF gene abundance negatively affected POD activity under the combined treatments. Superoxide dismutase and POD activities were negatively and positively related to Archaeospora and Scutellospora, respectively, under ECO₂ + Cd. Cadmium in roots and leaves was negatively and significantly related to Glomus, Scutellospora, and Claroideoglomus abundance under ECO₂ + Cd. Overall, AMF diversity and Archaeospora and Scutellospora in roots significantly influenced SOD, POD, and CAT activities. The response of AM symbiosis to ECO₂ might regulate antioxidant capacity in host plants upon Cd exposure. Glomus, Scutellospora, and Claroideoglomus might be applied to phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soils.

The O₃ uptake in 17 adult trees of six urban species was evaluated by the sap flow-based approach under free atmospheric conditions. The results showed very large species differences in ground area scaled whole-tree ozone uptake ( [Formula: see text] ), with estimates ranging from 0.61 ± 0.07 nmol m⁻² s⁻¹ in Robinia pseudoacacia to 4.80 ± 1.04 nmol m⁻² s⁻¹ in Magnolia liliiflora. However, average [Formula: see text] by deciduous foliages was not significantly higher than that by evergreen ones (3.13 vs 2.21 nmol m⁻² s⁻¹, p = 0.160). Species of high canopy conductance for O₃ ( [Formula: see text] ) took up more O₃ than those of low [Formula: see text] , but that their sensitivity to vapour pressure deficit (D) were also higher, and their [Formula: see text] decreased faster with increasing D, regardless of species. The responses of [Formula: see text] to D and total radiation led to the relative high flux of O₃ uptake, indicating high ozone risk for urban tree species.

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) carbon dioxide (CO₂) and nitrous oxide (N₂O), contribute significantly to global warming, and they have increased substantially over the years. Reforestation is considered as an important forestry application for carbon sequestration and GHGs emission reduction, however, it remains unknown whether reforestation may instead produce too much CO₂ and N₂O contibuting to GHGs pollution. This study was performed to characterize and examine the CO₂ and N₂O emissions and their controlling factors in different species and types of pure and mixture forest used for reforestation. Five soil layers from pure forest Platycladus orientalis (PO), Robinia pseudoacacia (RP), and their mixed forest P-R in the Taihang mountains of central China were sampled and incubated aerobically for 11 days. The P-R soil showed lower CO₂ and N₂O production potentials than those of the PO soils (P < 0.01). The average reduction rate of cumulative CO₂ and N₂O was 31.63% and 14.07%, respectively. If the mixed planting pattern is implemented for reforestation, the annual CO₂ reduction amounts of China’s plantation can be achieved at 8.79 million tonnes. With the increase of soil depths, cumulative CO₂ production in PO and RP soils decreased, whereas CO₂ and N₂O production in P-R soil did not show similar pattern. Soil particle size fraction was the main factor influencing GHGs emissions, and the clay fraction showed negative correlation with cumulative CO₂ and N₂O production. In summary, compared with PO pure artificial forests, the mixture plantation mode can not only reduce GHGs pollution but also improve soil fertility, which is conducive to sustainable management of artificial forests.

Particulate organic matter (POM) significantly affects the distribution of heavy metals in contaminated soil. However, the effect of POM on the fate of heavy metals during in situ-aided phytostabilization of waste slag is unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the distributions of heavy metals such as Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd in the POM fractions at a zinc smelting waste slag site under in situ-aided phytostabilization after five years. The results showed that the litters and residues of four plants―Arundo donax, Broussonetia papyrifera, Cryptomeria fortunei, and Robinia pseudoacacia―decomposed to form different POM size fractions. The percentage of the 0.05–0.25 mm POM size fraction was the highest, followed by the >1 mm and 0.5–1 mm POM size fractions, and that of the 0.25–0.5 mm POM size fraction was the lowest. The masses of POM derived from the four plants were in the following order: C. fortunei > B. papyrifera > A. donax > R. pseudoacacia. The contents, enrichment coefficients, and mass loads of heavy metals such as Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd in the POM increased with decreasing POM size, and those in the 0.05–0.25 mm POM size fraction were the highest. The mass load of heavy metals in the POM occurred in the following order: Cu > Cd > Zn > Pb. The surfaces of the POM with coarser and smaller size fractions were smoother and rougher, respectively, and the smaller POM size fractions had larger specific surface areas. The main functional groups in the different POM size fractions were –COOH, –OH, CO, CC, C–H, Si–O, and –CH₃. The POM fractions played a significant role in determining the distribution of heavy metals in the revegetated waste slag. These findings have important implications for aided phytostabilization, which significantly influences the fate and speciation of heavy metals at the phytoremediation site.

Despite the high ozone levels measured in China, and in Beijing in particular, reports of ozone-induced visible injury in vegetation are very scarce. Visible injury was investigated on July and August 2013 in the main parks, forest and agricultural areas of Beijing. Ozone injury was widespread in the area, being observed in 28 different species. Symptoms were more frequent in rural areas and mountains from northern Beijing, downwind from the city, and less frequent in city gardens. Among crops, injury to different types of beans (genera Phaseolus, Canavalia and Vigna) was common, and it was also observed in watermelon, grape vine, and in gourds. Native species such as ailanthus, several pines and ash species were also symptomatic. The black locust, the rose of Sharon and the Japanese morning glory were among the injured ornamental plants. Target species for broader bio-monitoring surveys in temperate China have been identified.

Concentrations of the elements Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were measured in the leaves and bark of Robinia pseudoacacia and the soil in which it grew, in the town of Oleśnica (SW Poland) and at a control site. We selected this town because emission from motor vehicles is practically the only source of air pollution, and it seemed interesting to evaluate its influence on soil and plants. The self-organizing feature map (SOFM) yielded distinct groups of soils and R. pseudoacacia leaves and bark, depending on traffic intensity. Only the map classifying bark samples identified an additional group of highly polluted sites along the main highway from Wrocław to Warszawa. The bark of R. pseudoacacia seems to be a better bioindicator of long-term cumulative traffic pollution in the investigated area, while leaves are good indicators of short-term seasonal accumulation trends. Once trained, SOFM could be used in the future to recognize types of pollution.

Ambient air pollution in industrial areas is one of the significant problems increasing high emissions since the 1990s. Atmospheric trace metal deposition in the industrial estate has occurred, and some have shown toxic effects on humans and non-human biota. Tree bark and annual rings have been used as convenient biomonitors due to the highly absorbing capacity of several metals for passive samplers in recent decades. It gives information about the speciation of some pollutants and their transition between organs in the trees. Systematic differences in air pollution degrees can be recorded spatial or temporal by analyzing the annual rings of the trees. In this study, Cupressus arizonica, Platanus orientalis, and Robinia pseudoacacia have been selected as landscape trees to identify Al, Cr, and Mn pollution during the past 30 years in the urban environments of the İzmit, Türkiye. The widespread type of landscape species was compared to perform the deposition degree of several sites. Metal concentrations have been detected in the barks and wood due to the industrialization of the territory year-to-year. The study’s framework indicated that the applicability of Robinia pseudoacacia L. is the better choice for assessing the degree of atmospheric metal pollution, both historical and near-past, on local scales.
