The high density and viscosity of fuel oil leads to its prolonged persistence in the environment and causes widespread contamination. Dispersants with a low environmental impact are necessary for fuel oil spill remediation. This study aimed to formulate bio-based dispersants by mixing anionic biosurfactant (lipopeptides from Bacillus subtilis GY19) with nonionic oleochemical surfactant (Dehydol LS7TH). The synergistic effect of the anionic-nonionic surfactant mixture produced a Winsor Type III microemulsion, which promoted petroleum mobilization. The hydrophilic-lipophilic deviation (HLD) equations for ionic and nonionic surfactant mixtures were compared, and it was found that the ionic equation was applicable for the calculation of lipopeptides and Dehydol LS7TH concentrations. The best formula contained 6.6% w/v lipopeptides and 11.9% w/v Dehydol LS7TH in seawater, and its dispersion effectiveness for bunker fuels A and C was 92% and 78%, respectively. The application of bio-based dispersants in water sources was optimized by Box-Behnken design. The efficiency of the bio-based dispersant was affected by the dispersant-to-oil ratios (DORs) but not by the water salinity. A suitable range of DORs for different oil contamination levels could be identified from the response surface plot. The dispersed fuel oil was further degraded by adding an oil-degrading bacterial consortium to the chemically enhanced water accommodated fractions (CEWAFs). After 7 days of incubation, the concentration of fuel oil was reduced from 3692 mg/L to 356 mg/L (88% removal efficiency). On the other hand, the abiotic control removed less than 40% fuel oil from the CEWAFs. This bio-based dispersant had an efficiency comparable to that of a commercial dispersant. The process of dispersant formulation and optimization could be applied to other surfactant mixtures.

The spatial distributions, fluxes, and environmental effects of non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) were investigated in the Yellow Sea (YS) and the East China Sea (ECS) in spring. The average concentrations of ethane, propane, i-/n-butane, ethylene, propylene and isoprene in the seawater were 18.1 ± 6.4, 15.4 ± 4.7, 6.8 ± 2.9, 6.4 ± 3.2, 67.1 ± 26.7, 20.5 ± 8.7 and 17.1 ± 11.1 pmol L⁻¹, respectively. The alkenes in the surface seawater were more abundant than their saturated homologs and NMHCs concentrations (with the exception of isoprene) decreased with carbon number. The spatial variations of isoprene were consistent with the distributions of chlorophyll a (Chl-a) and Chaetoceros, Skeletonema, Nitzschia mainly contributed to the production of isoprene, while the others’ distributions might be related to their photochemical production. Observations in atmospheric NMHCs indicated alkanes in the marine atmosphere decreased from inshore to offshore due to influence of the continental emissions, while alkenes were largely derived from the oceanic source. In addition, no apparent diurnal discrepancy of atmospheric NMHCs (except for isoprene) were found between daytime and night. As the main sink of NMHCs in seawater, the average sea-to-air fluxes of ethane, propane, i-/n-butane, ethylene and propylene were 31.70, 29.75, 18.49, 15.89, 239.6, 67.94 and 52.41 nmol m⁻² d⁻¹, respectively. The average annual emissions of isoprene accounted for 0.1–1.3% of the global ocean emissions, which indicated that the coastal and shelf areas might be significant sources of isoprene. Furthermore, this study represents the first effort to estimate the environmental effects caused by NMHCs over the YS and the ECS and the results demonstrated contributions of alkanes to ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation were lower than those of the alkenes and the largest contributor was isoprene.

Two different methodologies were combined to evaluate the risks that antibiotics can pose in the environment; i) an effect-based methodology based on microbial growth inhibition and ii) an analytical method based on liquid-chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The first approach was adapted and validated for the screening of four antibiotic families, specifically macrolides/β-lactams, quinolones, sulfonamides and tetracyclines. The LC-MS method was applied for the identification and quantification of target antibiotics; then, the obtained results were combined with ecotoxicological data from literature to determine the environmental risk. The two methodologies were used for the analysis of antibiotics in water samples (wastewater, river water and seawater) and biofluids (fish plasma and mollusk hemolymph) in two monitoring campaigns undertaken in the Ebro Delta and Mar Menor Lagoon (both in the Mediterranean coast of Spain). Both approaches highlighted macrolides (azithromycin) and quinolones (ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin) as the main antibiotics in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents with potential risk for the environment. However, no risk for the aquatic life was identified in the river, lagoon and seawater as antibiotic levels were much lower than those in WWTP effluents. Fish from Ebro River were the organisms presenting the highest antibiotic concentration when compared with bivalves (mussels) from the Mediterranean Sea and gastropods (marine snails) from the Mar Menor Lagoon. The effect-based methodology successfully determined antibiotic risk in wastewater, but its applicability was less clear in environmental waters such as seawater, due to its high detection limits. Improving sample preconcentration could increase the method sensibility. Overall, combination of both methodologies provides comprehensive insights in antibiotic occurrence and risk associated in areas under study.

The distribution of freshwater and marine microplastics (MPs) varies due to the difference in fresh and seawater densities and MP sources. This study aims to investigate the abundance of MPs and their possible sources in surface waters of different ecosystems, such as sea, lagoon, and lake. We classified MPs in terms of their color and type and established the relationship between the MPs in surface waters with different characteristics. The mean MP abundance (33 particles L⁻¹) detected herein was higher than that in the previously conducted studies. Fragment particles (37.95%) were determined to be the dominant MP type, and the predominant MP color was blue (75.28%). As for the seasonal MP distribution, its highest content (48.03 particles L⁻¹) was observed in autumn, unlike that reported by other studies. The findings of this study reveal the effects of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) discharge and current flow on the MP distribution in the study area. This study aims to provide representative data on the MP abundance and distribution, as well as MP-affecting parameters for similar aquatic areas in other parts of the world.

Microplastic pollution in estuarine and coastal environments has recently been characterised in several countries but few researchers have addressed the influence of different forms of coastal zone use on the distribution of microplastic. Here, microplastic particles were sampled in Hangzhou Bay, which is heavily influenced by a range of human activities, and their abundance, size, and polymer type characterised. The abundance of microplastics was 0.14 ± 0.12 items/m³ in water, 84.3 ± 56.6 items/kg dry weight of sediment, and between 0.25 ± 0.14 and 1.4 ± 0.37 items/individual in biota. These results show that Hangzhou Bay has a low level of microplastic contamination compared to other coastal systems in China, although abundance was spatially variable within the bay; relatively higher microplastic abundances were found in the southern area of the bay, which has adjacent industrial and urban land-use zones, while lower abundances were observed in the central and northern bay areas where mariculture, fisheries, and mineral and energy industries are most common. The relatively low microplastic abundance observed in the biota samples is consistent with the generally low values for the seawater and sediment samples. Pellets were the most common of four particle-shape classes (fibres, fragments, films, and pellets) in surface seawater, while fibres were most abundant in sediment and biota. Smaller-sized microplastics (<1.0 mm) were dominant in all samples. Microplastics in the surface seawater were dominated by low-density polypropylene and polyethylene particles, while rayon was dominant in the sediment and biota samples. Our results demonstrate that regional variability in anthropogenic activity and land-use are important controls on the spatial pattern of microplastic pollution in Hangzhou Bay.

Over three different seasons, seawater, porewater and sediment samples were collected from Jinzhou Bay, a previously heavily contaminated bay, to quantitatively assess the benthic flux of trace metals after a reduction in fluvial/sewage discharge for almost three decades. The spatial distribution patterns of trace metals in seawater, surface sediment, as well as the vertical distribution patterns of metals in porewater and solid phases in short sediment cores were reported. Metal concentrations in seawater and sediment all showed much higher Cd and Zn concentrations inside the Jinzhou Bay compared to the rest of Bohai Sea area. Zn, Ni, Pb and Co all had average benthic fluxes coming out of the sediments to the water column, contributing about 0.5%, 0.3%, 1.4% and 14% to their current standing stock in Jinzhou Bay. Seasonal difference was also identified in seawater and porewater, as well as in the benthic fluxes. In general, benthic fluxes and porewater concentrations all tended to be higher in summer, implying a close relationship between benthic flux and the temperature-dependent organic matter degradation process at the sediment-water interface.Currently, there are clearly still other sources, possibly fluvial/sewage discharge, as the main source of trace metals in Jinzhou Bay waters. For Cd and Cu, concentrations in the water column remain high on an annual basis indicating that sediment still acts as a sink. Conversely, for Pb, Zn, Co, and Ni, the sediment is beginning to act as a source to the water column. Although this may not yet be significant, it will become more and more important with time, and can last for hundreds to thousands of years.

Mercury (Hg) is among contaminants of public concern due to its prevalent existence, high toxicity, and bioaccumulation through food chains. Elevated Hg has been detected in seafood from the East China Sea (ECS), which is one of the largest marginal seas and an important fishing region in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on the distribution of Hg species and their controlling factors in the ECS water column, thus preventing the understanding of Hg cycling and the assessment of Hg risks in the ECS. In this study, two cruises were conducted in October 2014 and June 2015 in order to investigate the distribution of total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) and their controlling factors in the ECS. The concentrations of THg and MeHg were determined to be 4.2 ± 2.8 ng/L (THg) and 0.25 ± 0.13 ng/L (MeHg) in water from the ECS. The level of Hg in the ECS occupied the higher rank among the marginal seas, thus indicating significant Hg contamination in this system. Both the THg and MeHg presented complicated spatial distribution patterns in the ECS, with high concentration areas located in both the nearshore and offshore areas. Statistical analyses suggest that temperature (T) and Hg in sediment may be the controlling factors for THg distribution, while dissolved organic matter (DOM), T, and MeHg in the sediment may be the controlling factors for MeHg distribution in the seawater of the ECS. The relative importance of these environmental factors in Hg distribution depends on the water depth. T-salinity (S) diagram analyses showed that water mass mixing may also play an important role in controlling THg and MeHg distribution in the coastal ECS.

Lan, Wang-Rong | Huang, Xu-Guang | Lin, Lu-xiu | Li, Shun-Xing | Liu, Feng-Jiao
Human-induced temperature changes influence coastal regions, both via thermal pollution and ocean warming, which exerts profound effects on the chemistry of metals and the physiology of organisms. However, it remains unknown whether the increased temperature of discharged water or ocean warming, as a result of climate change, lead to an increase of human health risks associated with the consumption of sea foods. In this study, the influence of temperature on metal accumulation by oysters was studied in individuals collected from a coastal area affected by the thermal water discharge of the Houshi Power Plant, China. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF) and oral bioavailability (OBA) of metals in oysters was determined. Elevated temperatures led to an increase in BAF for Cu, Zn, Hg, and Cd (p < 0.05), but no change was observed for As and Pb (p > 0.05). The OBA for Cd, As, and Pb correlated positively to elevated temperatures (p < 0.05). However, for Cu and Zn, OBA was negatively correlated with increasing temperature (p < 0.05). As, Pb, and Cd in the trophically available metal (defined as a sum of heat-stable proteins, heat-denaturable proteins, and organelles) was significantly elevated at the highest temperature seawater site (site A) compared to the lowest seawater site (site B). Thus, the irregular variation of OBA for each metal may be the result of variations in the subcellular distribution of metals and the protein quality influenced by the increased temperature. Moreover, the increased temperature and increased the hazard quotient values of As and Cd (p < 0.05 for As, n = 6, p < 0.05 for Cd, n = 6), which provided an indication of the potential risks of the consumption of oysters or other seafood to future warming under climate change scenarios.

Plastics pollution has been recognized as a serious environmental problem. Nevertheless, new plastic uses, and applications are still increasing. Among these new applications, three-dimensional resin printers have increased their use and popularity around the world showing a vertiginous annual-sales growth. However, this technology is also the origin of residues generation from the alcohol cleaning procedure at the end of each printing. This alcohol/resin mixture can originate unintentionally very small plastic particles that usually are not correctly disposed, and as consequence, could be easily released to the environment. In this work, the nanoparticle generation from 3D printer’s cleaning procedure and their physicochemical characterization is reported. Nano-sized plastic particles are easily formed when the resin residues are dissolved in alcohol and placed under UV radiation from sunlight. These nanoparticles can agglomerate in seawater showing an average hydrodynamic diameter around 1 μm, whereas the same nanoparticles remain dispersed in ultrapure water, showing a hydrodynamic diameter of ≈300 nm. The formed nanoparticles showed an isoelectric point close to pH 2, which can facilitate their interaction with other positively charged pollutants. Thus, these unexpected plastic nanoparticles can become an environmental issue and public health risk.
اظهر المزيد [+] اقل [-]The influence of salinization on seed germination and plant growth under mono and polyculture
2020
Sea level rise induced-salinization is lowering coastal soils productivity. In order to assess the effects that increased salinity may provoke in terrestrial plants, using as model species: Trifolium pratense, Lolium perenne, Festuca arundinacea and Vicia sativa, two specific objectives were targeted: i) to determine the sensitivity of the selected plant species to increased salinity (induced by seawater-SW or by NaCl, proposed as a surrogate of SW) and, ii) to assess the influence of salinization in total biomass under different agricultural practices (mono- or polycultures). The four plant species exhibited a higher sensitivity to NaCl than to SW. Festuca arundinacea was the most tolerant species to NaCl (EC₅₀,ₛₑₑd gₑᵣₘᵢₙₐₜᵢₒₙ and EC₅₀,gᵣₒwₜₕ of 18.6 and 10.5 mScm⁻¹, respectively). The other three species presented effective conductivities in the same order of magnitude and, in general, with 95% confidence limits overlapping. Soil moistened with SW caused no significant adverse effects on seed germination and growth of L. perenne. Similar to NaCl, the other three species, in general, presented a similar sensitivity to SW exposure with EC₅₀,ₛₑₑd gₑᵣₘᵢₙₐₜᵢₒₙ and EC₅₀,gᵣₒwₜₕ within the same order of magnitude and with confidence limits overlapping. The agricultural practice (mono-vs polyculture) showed some influence on the biomass of each plant species. When considering total productivity, for aerial and root biomass, it was higher in control comparatively to salinization conditions. Under salinization stress, the practice of polyculture was associated with a higher aerial and root total biomass than monocultures (for instance with combinations with T. pratense and F. arundinacea). Results suggest that the effects of salinity stress on total productivity may be minimized under agricultural practices of polyculture. Thus, this type of cultures should be encouraged in low-lying coastal ecosystems that are predicted to suffer from salinization caused by seawater intrusions.
