Effect of Si/Al molar ratio on the immobilization of selenium and arsenic oxyanions in geopolymer

The effect of Si/Al molar ratio of geopolymer on the immobilization of Se and As oxyanions was studied through leaching test and solid characterizations including XRD, FTIR, TG, NMR, XAFS, and N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherm. As a whole, the leaching percentages of Se and As oxyanions increased with the increase of the Si/Al molar ratio of geopolymer. Linear combination fitting confirmed that most of selenite, selenate and arsenate ions existed in geopolymers through electrostatic interaction. Thus, Al tetrahedrons in geopolymer structure control the charge stability for these oxyanions to a large extent. Differently, as for arsenate ions, they were recrystallized into an arsenate compound (Na₃.₂₅(OH)₀.₂₅(H₂O)₁₂)(AsO₄) in geopolymers. The additive of these pollutants has an adverse effect on the compactness of geopolymer, then influencing the leaching performance in turn. However, the changes in leaching results did not follow the variation trend of specific surface areas and pore volumes of geopolymers with different Si/Al ratios. The number and distribution of Al tetrahedron and compactness of geopolymer have a synergistic effect on the immobilization of these oxyanions. Besides, the compressive strengths of geopolymer samples are always higher than 20 MPa, which meets the requirement of safe disposal of hazardous waste.

The Household Air Pollution Intervention Network trial is a multi-country study on the effects of a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) stove and fuel distribution intervention on women's and children's health. There is limited data on exposure reductions achieved by switching from solid to clean cooking fuels in rural settings across multiple countries. As formative research in 2017, we recruited pregnant women and characterized the impact of the intervention on personal exposures and kitchen levels of fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) in Guatemala, India, and Rwanda. Forty pregnant women were enrolled in each site. We measured cooking area concentrations of and personal exposures to PM₂.₅ for 24 or 48 h using gravimetric-based PM₂.₅ samplers at baseline and two follow-ups over two months after delivery of an LPG cookstove and free fuel supply. Mixed models were used to estimate PM₂.₅ reductions. Median kitchen PM₂.₅ concentrations were 296 μg/m³ at baseline (interquartile range, IQR: 158–507), 24 μg/m³ at first follow-up (IQR: 18–37), and 23 μg/m³ at second follow-up (IQR: 14–37). Median personal exposures to PM₂.₅ were 134 μg/m³ at baseline (IQR: 71–224), 35 μg/m³ at first follow-up (IQR: 23–51), and 32 μg/m³ at second follow-up (IQR: 23–47). Overall, the LPG intervention was associated with a 92% (95% confidence interval (CI): 90–94%) reduction in kitchen PM₂.₅ concentrations and a 74% (95% CI: 70–79%) reduction in personal PM₂.₅ exposures. Results were similar for each site. The intervention was associated with substantial reductions in kitchen and personal PM₂.₅ overall and in all sites. Results suggest LPG interventions in these rural settings may lower exposures to the WHO annual interim target-1 of 35 μg/m³. The range of exposure contrasts falls on steep sections of estimated exposure-response curves for birthweight, blood pressure, and acute lower respiratory infections, implying potentially important health benefits when transitioning from solid fuels to LPG.

We investigated the spatio-temporal trends of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) deposition in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) between 2008 and 2017, and applied source apportionment tools to assess sources using snowpacks. Estimated PAC mass deposition was significantly correlated with crude oil production (R² = 0.48, p = 0.03), and increased between 2008 and 2017. Loadings of alkylated PACs c1-, c2-fluorenes/pyrenes and c1-, c3-benzo[a]anthracenes/chrysenes/triphenylenes significantly increased at mid-field sites (25–50 km from central industrial reference site, AR6) (Mann-Kendall, p < 0.05) reflecting physical expansion of the AOSR. The distance from emission sources was important in the deposition of PACs, including the distance from AR6 (R² = 0.69–0.91), nearest petcoke storage (R² = 0.77–0.88), 0.89) and upgrader stack (R² = 0.56–0.61). Source apportionment PAC distribution profiles of the source materials (petcokes, oil sand ores, road dust) did not show unique matching profiles with the snowpacks. However, the minimal presence of retene in petcokes and an abundance of benzo[ghi]fluoranthene in road dust was observed, and suggests potential for these compounds as chemical markers in distinguishing sources. Furthermore, correlations between PACs and selected metal(loid)s in the AOSR snowpacks were assessed to infer potential common sources. Significant positive (p < 0.05) correlations between metal(loid)s enriched in bitumen (vanadium, molybdenum, nickel) and PACs, at near to mid-field (0–50 km from AR6) sites suggests common sources or similar transfer and fate processes. The results of our study convey data necessary for monitoring studies in the constantly developing AOSR, advance our knowledge of PACs profiles in source materials (including the much less studied alkylated PACs and dibenzothiophenes), which will be valuable for other studies related to oil pollution, urban run-off and forest fires.PACs mass deposition increasing between 2008 and 2017 coincident with crude oil production, and retene and benzo[ghi]fluoranthene show potential in distinguishing AOSR sources.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame retardants and the congener 2, 2′, 4, 4′-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (PBDE-47) is capable of inducing thyroid endocrine disruption and developmental toxicity. However, little is known about whether developmental PBDE-47 exposure-elicited alterations in semen quality is associated with thyroid hormones (THs) perturbation. In this research, we sought to explore the impacts of gestational and lactational PBDE-47 exposure on adult sperm quantity and motility, and its link with THs levels. For this purpose, female Sprague-Dawley rats were administered environmentally relevant PBDE-47 levels (0.1, 1.0, 10 mg/kg/day) by oral gavage from prepregnancy through lactation cessation to achieve early-life exposure of offspring and to mimic the actual exposure. Sperm quantity and motility together with serum THs levels from male offspring were determined on postnatal day 88. In utero and lactational exposure to PBDE-47 boosted the weight gain while reduced the relative testis weight in adult male offspring. These were accompanied with the reductions in sperm counts (total and living sperm counts), the percentage of progressive sperm motility, sperm velocities (curvilinear velocity, straight-line velocity and average path velocity), motion path (beat cross frequency, linearity and wobble) and linear motile sperm parameters (count, motility and concentration). Further studies identified that the levels of serum triiodothyronine (T₃) were increased by PBDE-47 exposure and negatively associated with those differential semen parameters on quantity and motility. Collectively, our results indicate that exposure to low-level PBDE-47 during early-life development impairs semen quality in adult rats, which could be mediated partially by abnormal T₃ levels.

Levels of toxic elements in ambient PM₂.₅ were measured from 29 October 2019 to 30 March 2020 in Linfen, China, to assess the health risks they posed and to identify critical risk sources during different periods of the COVID-19 lockdown and haze episodes using positive matrix factorization (PMF) and a health-risk assessment model. The mean PM₂.₅ concentration during the study period was 145 μg/m³, and the 10 investigated toxic elements accounted for 0.31% of the PM₂.₅ mass. The total non-cancer risk (HI) and total cancer risk (TCR) of the selected toxic elements exceed the US EPA limits for children and adults. The HI for children was 2.3 times that for adults for all periods, which is likely due to the high inhalation rate per unit body weight for children. While the TCR for adults was 1.7 times that of children, which is mainly attributed to potential longer exposure duration for adults. The HI and TCR of the toxic elements during full lockdown were reduced by 66% and 58%, respectively, compared to their pre-lockdown levels. The HI and TCR were primarily attributable to Mn and As, respectively. Health risks during haze episodes were significantly higher than the average levels during COVID-19 lockdowns, though the HI and TCR of the selected toxic elements during full-lockdown haze episodes were 68% and 17% lower, respectively, than were the levels during pre-lockdown haze episodes. During the study period, fugitive dust and steel-related smelting were the highest contributors to HI and TCR, respectively, and decreased in these emission sources contributed the most to the lower health risks observed during the full lockdown. There, the control of these sources is critical to effectively reduce public health risks.

Contaminant levels are lower in Antarctica than elsewhere in the world because of its low anthropogenic activities. However, the northern region of the Antarctic Peninsula, is close to South America and experiences the greatest anthropogenic pressure in Antarctica. Here, we investigated, in two Antarctic Peninsula islands, intra and interspecific factors that influence the concentrations of 17 trace elements (TEs) in blood and feathers of three penguin species breeding sympatrically in relation to their trophic ecology assessed via a stable isotopic approach (C, N and S). Geographical location, foraging zone (δ¹³C and δ³⁴S) and diet influences the interspecific difference, and sex and maturity stage diet influence the intraspecific difference of Pygoscelis penguins. Penguins from Livingston showed higher values (mean, ng. g⁻¹, dry weight - dw) of Zn (103), Mn (0.3), and Fe (95) than those from King George Island (Zn: 80, Mn: 1.9, and Fe: 11). Gender-related differences were observed, as males showed significantly higher values (mean, ng. g⁻¹, dw) of Rb (3.4) and δ¹⁵N in blood of gentoo, and Ca (1344) in Adélie feathers. Chicks of gentoo and Adélie presented higher Zn, Mg, Ca, and Sr and lower ¹³C values in blood than adults. The highest concentrations (mean, ng. g⁻¹, dw) of Cd (0.2) and Cu (26), and the lowest δ¹⁵N values were found in chinstrap. Geographical, intraspecific (i.e., ontogenetic and gender-related) and interspecific differences in feeding seemed to have influenced TE and stable isotope values in these animals. The TE bioaccumulation by penguins may have also been influenced by natural enrichment in environmental levels of these elements, which seems to be the case for Fe, Zn, and Mn. However, the high level of some of the TEs (Mn, Cd, and Cr) may reflect the increase of local and global human activities.

Microplastic abundances have been studied intensively in the last years in marine and freshwater environments worldwide. Though several articles have been published about the Mediterranean Sea, only few studies about the Black Sea exist. The Black Sea drains into the Mediterranean Sea and may therefore significantly contribute to the Mediterranean marine pollution. So far, only very few articles have been published about micro-, meso- and macroplastic abundances in the Western Black Sea. In order to fill this knowledge gap and to decipher the number of plastics on the water surface, 12 samples were collected from surface waters with a neustonic net (mesh size 200 μm) in the Black Sea close to the Danube Delta and the Romanian shore. Organic matter was digested and plastic particles were isolated by density separation. The results of visual inspection, pyrolysis GC-MS (for microplastics) and ATR-FTIR (for mesoplastics >5 mm) revealed an average concentration of 7 plastic particles/m³, dominated by fibers (∼76%), followed by foils (∼13%) and fragments (∼11%). Only very few spherules were detected. The polymers polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) dominated which is in line with other studies analyzing surface waters from rivers in Western Europe as well as in China. Statistical analyses show that the plastic concentration close to the mouth of the Danube River was significantly higher than at four nearshore regions along the Romanian and Bulgarian coastline. This could be explained by plastic inputs from the Danube River into the western part of the Black Sea.

Xenobiotics are worldwide distributed and humans are unavoidably exposed to multiple chemical compounds during life, from preconception to adulthood. The human microbiota is mainly settled during early life and modulate host health and fitness. One of the main routes for chemical exposure is by intake of contaminated food and water. Thus, the interplay between diet-xenobiotics-microbiota during pregnancy and perinatal period may have relevant consequences for infant and adult health. Maternal exposure to metal(oid)s, persistent organic pollutants, and some food additives can modify the infant’s microbiota with unknown consequences for child or adult health. Toxicants’ exposure may also modulate the maternal transfer of microorganisms to the progeny during birth and breastfeeding; however, scarce information is available. The rapid increase in releasing novel chemicals to the environment, the exposure to chemical mixtures, the chronic/low dose scenario, and the delay in science-stakeholders action call for novel and groundbreaking approaches to improve a comprehensive risk assessment in sensitive population groups like pregnant women and neonates, with emphasis on microbiota as modulating factor and target-organ of xenobiotic’s toxicity.

Two radon measurement stations located to the north and south of a NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials) repository of phosphogypsum (southwest of Europe) were used to monitor radon behavior during 2018. The stations are located at opposing sides of the repository, one in Huelva City to the north and other one in a rural area to the south. This setup aimed to identify the influence of the NORM repository on each station and use radon levels as a marker of atmospheric transport in the local area. To achieve this, a comparison was carried out with other coastal stations in the south of Spain, finding higher average concentrations in Huelva City, ~3.3 Bq m⁻³. Hierarchical clustering was applied to identify days with different radon patterns at each Huelva station, detecting possible local radon transport events from the repository. Three events were investigated with WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) and FLEXPART-WRF (FLEXible PARTicle dispersion model). It was found that both sampling sites required atmospheric stagnant conditions to reach high radon concentration. However, under these conditions the urban station showed high radon regardless of wind direction while the rural station also required radon transport from the repository, either directly or indirectly.

A pot experiment was carried out on brown soil polluted by dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) to investigate the effects of biochar (BC) derived from corn straw and Fe–Mn oxide modified biochar composites (FMBC) on the bioavailability of DBP and DEHP, as well as ecosystem responses in rhizosphere soil after wheat ripening. The results indicate that the application of BC and FMBC significantly increases soil organic matter, pH, available nitrogen (AN), Olsen phosphorus, and available potassium (AK); reduces the bioavailability of DBP and DEHP; enhances the activities of dehydrogenase, urease, protease, β-glucosidase, and polyphenol oxidase; and decreases acid phosphatase activity. No changes in richness and diversity, which were measured by Illumina MiSeq sequencing, were observed following BC and FMBC application. The bacterial community structure and composition varied with DBP/DEHP concentrations and BC/FMBC additions in a nonsystematic way and no significant trends were observed. In addition, FMBC exhibited better performance in increasing soil properties and decreasing the bioavailability of DBP and DEHP compared with BC. Hence, the FMBC amendment may be a promising way of developing sustainable agricultural environmental management.
