The influence of regional transport on aerosol pollution has been explored in previous studies based on numerical simulation or surface observation. Nevertheless, owing to inhomogeneous vertical distribution of air pollutants, vertical observations should be conducted for a comprehensive understanding of regional transport. Here we obtained the vertical profiles of aerosol and its precursors using ground-based multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) at the Nancheng site in suburban Beijing on the southwest transport pathway of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, China, and then estimated the vertical profiles of transport fluxes in the southwest-northeast direction. The maximum net transport fluxes per unit cross-sectional area, calculated as pollutant concentration multiply by wind speed, of aerosol extinction coefficient (AEC), NO₂, SO₂ and HCHO were 0.98 km⁻¹ m s⁻¹, 24, 14 and 8.0 μg m⁻² s⁻¹ from southwest to northeast, which occurred in the 200–300 m, 100–200 m, 500–600 m and 500–600 m layers, respectively, due to much higher pollutant concentrations during southwest transport than during northeast transport in these layers. The average net column transport fluxes were 1200 km⁻¹ m² s⁻¹, 38, 26 and 15 mg m⁻¹ s⁻¹ from southwest to northeast for AEC, NO₂, SO₂ and HCHO, respectively, in which the fluxes in the surface layer (0–100 m) accounted for only 2.3%–4.2%. Evaluation only based on surface observation would underestimate the influence of the transport from southwest cities to Beijing. Northeast or weak southwest transports dominated in clean conditions with PM₂.₅ <75 μg m⁻³ and intense southwest transport dominated in polluted conditions with PM₂.₅ >75 μg m⁻³. Southwest transport through the middle boundary layer was a trigger factor for aerosol pollution events in urban Beijing, because it not only directly bringing air pollutants, but also induced an inverse structure of aerosols, which resulted in stronger atmospheric stability and aggravated air pollution in urban Beijing.

Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition is becoming an increasingly important factor affecting the nutrient level of lakes, especially considering the long-term control measures for external N inputs in developed regions. However, few studies have investigated the effects of atmospheric N deposition and the respective ecological significance in eutrophic waters. In this study, bulk and wet deposition rates of all N species and water N concentrations in Lake Taihu were determined based on the long-term (2010–2018) high-resolution (weekly or monthly) systematic observations. The results indicated that the decline in wind speed and change in land-use type likely decreased the N deposition rate. The bulk N deposition rates decreased from 45.77 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ in 2012 to 22.06 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ in 2018, which could account for decrease of 1.01 mg N L⁻¹ in the lake N concentrations via a rough estimation, and this value was close to the actual variation in N concentration in Lake Taihu. The correlation between N concentrations and atmospheric deposition fluxes was stronger than that between N concentrations and riverine N inputs or lake storage, which further indicated that change in atmospheric N deposition was the key reason for the variation in N concentrations. The direct bulk N deposition into Lake Taihu accounted for 17.5% and 51.4% of the riverine N inputs and lake N inventory, respectively. Moreover, atmospheric N deposition was concentrated in summer, which was dominated by reduced N, and it may be important for the duration of algal blooms. Therefore, external N inputs, including atmospheric N deposition, should be further controlled for an effective mitigation of eutrophication and algal blooms in Lake Taihu.

The nationwide occurrence of endosulfan residues in cotton fields has not yet been investigated. Therefore, in this study, 202 surface soil samples from 27 cities were collected from cotton fields in 8 major cotton-planting provinces of China, covering more than 97% of the national cotton sown area. The results showed that endosulfan residues were detected in cotton fields throughout the country. The main type of residue found was endosulfan sulfate (ES-sulfate), followed by β-endosulfan and α-endosulfan, with average concentrations of 0.475, 0.129, and 0.048 μg/kg, respectively. Significant spatial variations in the endosulfan residues was noted, and the highest concentration of endosulfan residues was observed in the northwest inland cotton-growing area, followed by that in the Yellow River basin and Yangtze River basin cotton-growing areas. The endosulfan residues showed significant positive correlations with soil organic matter and soil clay contents. The α/β endosulfan ratio was determined to be in the range of 0.02–1.20, indicating that endosulfan residues originated from the endosulfan application performed in historical cotton cultivation efforts. Together with the literature data, the concentrations of α-endosulfan and β-endosulfan residues peaked in 2015 and 2017, respectively, and showed an overall decreasing trend from 2002 to 2021. The results of the ecological risk assessment suggested that Folsomia candida was most sensitive to endosulfan residues, with 20.8% of the sites presenting a high risk. However, in general, the soil ecological risk of cotton fields across the country was low. Our study demonstrated that China has achieved promising results in controlling the use and pollution of endosulfan, especially after 2014.

Slaughter wastewater is an important and wide range of environmental issues, and even threaten human health through meat production. A high efficiency and stability microsphere-immobilized Bacillus velezensis strain was designed to remove organic matter and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in process of slaughter wastewater. Bacillus velezensis was immobilized on the surface of sodium alginate (SA)/Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/Nano Zinc Oxide (Nano-ZnO) microsphere with the adhesion to bio-carrier through direct physical adsorption. Results indicated that SA/PVA/ZnO and SA/ZnO microspheres could inhibit E.coli growth with adding 0.15 g/L nano-ZnO and not affect Bacillus velezensis strain, and the removal the chemical oxygen demand (COD) rates of SA/PVA/ZnO microsphere immobilized cells are 16.99%, followed by SA/ZnO (13.69%) and free bacteria (7.61%) from 50% concentration slaughter wastewater within 24 h at 37 °C, pH 7.0, and 120 rpm, a significant difference was found between the microsphere and control group. Moreover, when the processing time reaches 36 h, COD degradation of SA/PVA/ZnO microsphere is obviously higher than other groups (SA/PVA/ZnO:SA/ZnO:control vs 18.535 : 15.446: 10.812). Similar results were obtained from 30% concentration slaughter wastewater. Moreover, protein degradation assay was detected, and there are no significant difference (SA/PVA/ZnO:SA/ZnO:control vs 35.4 : 34.4: 36.0). The design of this strategy could greatly enhance the degradation efficiency, inhibit the growth of other bacteria and no effect on the activity of protease in slaughter wastewater. These findings suggested that the nano-ZnO hydrogel immobilization Bacillus velezensis system wastewater treatment is a valuable alternative method for the remediation of pollutants from slaughter wastewater with a novel and eco-friendly with low-cost investment as an advantage.

The weathering and contaminant transport behavior of both primary (PMPs) and secondary microplastics (SMPs) are interrelated to their original physiochemical features and variations within the environment. This study examines the influence of PMPs' intrinsic characteristics (polymer structure and crystallinity) and SMPs' extrinsic features (surface oxidation and external sediments attachment) on the photodegradation kinetics, and subsequently Pb(II) and Zn(II) uptake from stormwater. For this purpose, high density polyethylene (HDPE) and low density polyethylene (LDPE) with different degrees of crystallinities were produced as PMPs, and their photodegradation behaviors were compared with original polymers. Furthermore, the SMPs generated by abrasion and surface oxidation of PMPs and the virgin PMPs underwent accelerated photodegradation, and the changes of their crystallinity, surface chemistry, and morphology were examined. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) studies revealed the formation of cracks and different oxidized functionalities on MPs surface due to UV photodegradation. The vinyl and carbonyl indices calculated using Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy demonstrated an elevated photodegradation rate for SMPs compared to the PMPs. Moreover, the Differential Scanning Colorimetry (DSC) demonstrated an increasing percentage of crystallinity in all MPs due to the photodegradation. The percent crystallinity of HDPE pellets increased after photodegradation from 49.8 to 62.6 and it increased from 17.2 to 38.9 for LDPE pellets respectively. The greater level of increase in crystallinity for LDPE in comparison to HDPE upon photodegradation was referred to as LDPE's greater amorphous content and branched structure. A greater level of metal uptake was obtained for photodegraded LDPE pellets as 2526 μg/m² for Pb(II) and 2028 μg/m² for Zn(II) respectively.

Once in the aquatic ecosystems, nanoplastics (NPls) can interact with other contaminants acting as vectors of transport and altering their toxicological effects towards organisms. Thus, the present study aims to investigate how polystyrene NPls (44 nm) interact with the herbicide phenmedipham (PHE) and affect its toxicity to zebrafish embryos. Single exposures to 0, 0.015, 0.15, 1.5, 15 and 150 mg/L NPls and 0.02, 0.2, 2 and 20 mg/L PHE were performed. Embryos were also exposed to the binominal combinations: 0.015 mg/L NPls + 2 mg/L PHE, 0.015 mg/L NPls + 20 mg/L PHE, 1.5 mg/L NPls + 2 mg/L PHE and 1.5 mg/L NPls + 20 mg/L PHE. Due to the low solubility of PHE in water, a solvent control was performed (0.01% acetone). PHE was quantified. Mortality, heartbeat and hatching rate, malformations appearance, locomotor behavior and biomarkers related to oxidative stress, neurotransmission and energy budgets were analyzed. During 96 h, NPls and PHE single and combined exposures did not affect embryos development. After 120 h, NPls induced hyperactivity and PHE induced hypoactivity. After 96 h, NPls increased catalase activity and PHE increased glutathione S-transferases activity. On the combination 0.015 mg/L NPls + 20 mg/L PHE, hyperactivity behavior was found, similar to 0.015 mg/L NPls, and cholinesterase activity was inhibited. Additionally, the combination 1.5 mg/L NPls + 20 mg/L PHE increased both catalase and glutathione S-transferases activities. The combination NPls with PHE affected more biochemical endpoints than the single exposures, showing the higher effect of the binominal combinations. Dissimilar interactions effects – no interaction, synergism and antagonism – between NPls and PHE were found. The current study shows that the effects of NPls on bioavailability and toxicity of other contaminants (e.g. PHE) cannot be ignored during the assessment of NPls environmental behavior and risks.

Muscle melanisation in sand flathead is visible as black spots in the normally white flesh of fish. It is widespread in Tasmania, including at the Tamar Estuary, with increasing frequency of reporting by recreational fishers. The phenomenon is more prevalent in areas impacted by heavy metal pollution and has been linked to heavy metal accumulation. In this study, image processing software ImageJ was employed to study the phenomenon and to establish an objective rating system. A longitudinal profile plot was used to study the greying of the fillet. The degree of melanisation was rated based on the percentage surface area melanised on the surface and in transverse sections of fillets. A muscle melanisation scoring system for sand flathead was established based on visual interpretation using the macroscopic melanisation scoring criteria: melanisation scores 0 = <0.5%, 1 = 0.5–5%, 2 = 5–20%, and 3 = >20% (% = melanised surface area in proportion to the whole fillet). A refined image analysis technique was developed to quantify the percentage of melanised muscle surface area and the muscle melanisation scoring system was statistically validated. Sand flathead fillet with higher melanisation score was shown to be linked to increased intensity of greyness and greater numbers and size of black spots on the surface of fillets and within the flesh. The greying and black spots were primarily concentrated at the anterior region of fillet and around the dorsal vertebrae zone on transverse section of fillets. Overall, findings from this study established the use of image analysis techniques to validate visual inspection and to give a standardised and objective method to determine the degree of melanisation in sand flathead. As muscle melanisation appears to be linked to heavy metal pollution, the standardised scoring system would facilitate future research for environmental pollution and monitoring purposes.

Exposure to tobacco smoke during pregnancy has been associated with a series of adverse reproductive outcomes; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not well-established. We conducted an untargeted metabolome-wide association study to identify the metabolic perturbations and molecular mechanisms underlying the association between cotinine, a widely used biomarker of tobacco exposure, and adverse birth outcomes. We collected early and late pregnancy urine samples for cotinine measurement and serum samples for high-resolution metabolomics (HRM) profiling from 105 pregnant women from the Atlanta African American Maternal-Child cohort (2014–2016). Maternal metabolome perturbations mediating prenatal tobacco smoke exposure and adverse birth outcomes were assessed by an untargeted HRM workflow using generalized linear models, followed by pathway enrichment analysis and chemical annotation, with a meet-in-the-middle approach. The median maternal urinary cotinine concentrations were 5.93 μg/g creatinine and 3.69 μg/g creatinine in early and late pregnancy, respectively. In total, 16,481 and 13,043 metabolic features were identified in serum samples at each visit from positive and negative electrospray ionization modes, respectively. Twelve metabolic pathways were found to be associated with both cotinine concentrations and adverse birth outcomes during early and late pregnancy, including tryptophan, histidine, urea cycle, arginine, and proline metabolism. We confirmed 47 metabolites associated with cotinine levels, preterm birth, and shorter gestational age, including glutamate, serine, choline, and taurine, which are closely involved in endogenous inflammation, vascular reactivity, and lipid peroxidation processes. The metabolic perturbations associated with cotinine levels were related to inflammation, oxidative stress, placental vascularization, and insulin action, which could contribute to shorter gestations. The findings will support the further understanding of potential internal responses in association with tobacco smoke exposures, especially among African American women who are disproportionately exposed to high tobacco smoke and experience higher rates of adverse birth outcomes.

High-density culturing with excessive feeding of commercial feed has caused heavy metals pollution to agricultural production system. In this study, the dynamic changes and transfer of heavy metals in rice-crayfish coculture system (RCCS) and crayfish intensive culture system (CICS) within a completed culture cycle were systematically quantified. Our results showed that Cd in feed represented more than 50% of the total Cd input, and the inputs of As and Cr were mainly from irrigation. The residues of As and Pb in RCCS were slightly higher than those in CICS, while the residues of Cd and Cr in RCCS were far fewer than those in CICS. Moreover, the metal pollution index in CICS was 0.781, while it was 0.543 in the RCCS. Furthermore, a large proportion of the Cd and Pb in CICS was released into the external environment through drainage. Notably, the absorption and solidification of heavy metals by straw did not increase the residues of As and Pb in the major components of RCCS in the second year. Compared to CICS, RCCS did not produce many heavy metal residues or cause heavy metal discharge pressure on the external environment, and its food product had a low risk of heavy metal contamination.

Denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) microorganisms, using nitrate/nitrite to oxidize methane, have been proved to be an important microbial methane sink in natural habitats. Increasing nitrogen deposit around the globe brings increased availability of substrates for these microorganisms. However, how elevated nitrogen level affects denitrifying methanotrophs has not been elucidated. In this study, sediment/soil samples from coastal wetland with continuous nitrogen input and paddy field with periodic nitrogen input were collected to investigate the influence of nitrogen input on the abundance and activity of denitrifying methanotrophs. The results indicated that nitrogen input significantly promoted DAMO microorganisms’ abundance and contribution to methane emission reduction. In the coastal wetland, the contribution rate of DAMO process to methane removal increased from 12.1% to 33.5% along with continuously elevated nitrogen level in the 3-year tracking study. In the paddy field, the DAMO process accounted for 71.9% of total methane removal when nitrogen fertilizer was applied during the growing season, exceeding the aerobic methane oxidation process. This work would help us better understand the microbial methane cycle and reduce uncertainties in the estimations of the global methane emission.
