Antibiotics are heavily used in Chinese mariculture, but only a small portion of the added antibiotics are absorbed by living creatures. Biofilm processes are universally used in mariculture wastewater treatment. In this study, removal of antibiotics (norfloxacin, rifampicin, and oxytetracycline) from wastewater by moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) and the influence of antibiotics on reactor biofilm were investigated. The results demonstrated that there was no significant effect of sub-μg/L–sub-mg/L concentrations of antibiotics on TOC removal. Moreover, the relative abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) in MBBR biofilm increased because of selective pressure of antibiotics. In addition, antibiotics decreased the diversity of the biofilm bacterial community and altered bacterial community structure. These findings provide an empirical basis for the development of appropriate practices for mariculture, and suggest that disinfection and advanced oxidation should be applied to eliminate antibiotics, ARGs, and ARB from mariculture wastewater.

To assess the environmental risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 48 and 45 sediments were collected from the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) and Pearl River Estuary (PRE), respectively. The toxicity equivalency concentration (TEQ) in the YRE and PRE were ranged from 1.68 to 76.13 and 9.28 to 129.24ngTEQg−1, respectively. Results of risk quotient suggest that ecological risks of two estuaries are at a moderate level, but are higher in the PRE than YRE. The increment lifetime cancer risks (ILCR) from the YRE via ingestion and dermal contact were 1×10−6 to 5.6×10−5 and 4×10−6 to 1.6×10−4, and ranged from 7×10−6 to 9.4×10−5 and 2×10−5 to 2.8×10−4 in the PRE. ILCR results suggest that some low and moderate cancer risk exists in the YRE and PRE. Therefore, monitoring and control measures should be carried out immediately to reduce or eliminate the risks to human health from environmental exposure.

According to 2014–2016 monitoring data, an assessment index system including water quality, depositional environment and ecosystem was built to evaluate the health statue of marine ecosystem in the Laizhou Bay using analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method. The results, spatialized in ArcGIS software, show: while the comprehensive ecological health index is 0.62, the ecological environmental quality in the Laizhou Bay is in a sub-healthy state; the unhealthy area is mainly concentrated in southwestern inshore region, and impacted by serious environmental problems, such as water eutrophication and heavy metal pollution; the northwestern and southeastern inshore regions are in a sub-healthy state, while the eastern inshore and northern areas are in the healthiest state. The land-based pollutants that discharge into the sea may be the leading factors that are causing ecological environment deterioration in the Laizhou Bay, and the reclamation work ongoing around the port has exacerbated the ecological risk.

Dissolved sulfide, iron (Fe), and phosphorus (P) concentrations in sediments of the East China Sea were simultaneously measured in situ by diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique. The results, by combination with solid-phase Fe speciation, were used to characterize the interplays of Fe, S and P. Diverse distributions of dissolved sulfide among the sites are attributable to highly dynamic diagenetic regimes and varying availability of labile organic carbon (OC). The DGT technique provided high-resolution evidence for coexistence of microbial iron reduction (MIR) and sulfate reduction in localized zones, and for Fe-coupled P mobilization. Measured Fe2+/P ratios suggest that Fe2+ reoxidatiion at the oxic zones can serve as an efficient scavenger of P. Empirical estimation indicates that MIR plays an important role in anaerobic OC mineralization in the sediments, which is a combined result of low availability of labile OC, high reactive Fe content, and unsteady diagenetic regimes.

Marine debris pollution is considered as a worldwide problem and a direct threat to the environment, economy and human health. In this paper, we provide the first quantitative assessment of debris on the seafloor of the southern part of the economic exclusive waters of Morocco. The data were collected in a scientific trawl survey carried out from 5 to 25 October 2014 between (26N) to (21N) covering different stratums of depths (from 10 to 266m) and following a sampling network of 100 stations distributed randomly in the study area. A total of 603kg of debris was collected and sorted into five main categories: plastic, metal, rubber, textiles and glass. Over 50% of collected items was made by plastic, 94% of them are the plastic fishing gear used to capture the Octopus vulgaris. The analysis of the distribution shows that anthropogenic debris is present in the majority of the prospected area (∼ 47,541km2) with different densities ranging from 0 to 1768 (± 298,15)kg/km2. The spatial autocorrelation approach using GIS shows that the concentration of this debris is correlated very well with a set of factors such as the proximity to fishing activity sites. Moreover, the mechanism of transportation and dispersion was influenced by the hydrodynamic properties of the region.

Olefin-based synthetic-based drilling mud (SBM) was released into the Gulf of Mexico as a result of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) disaster in 2010. We studied the composition of neat SBM and, using conventional GC-FID, the extent, concentration, and chemical character of SBM-derived olefins in >3600 seafloor sediments collected in 2010/2011 and 2014. SBM-derived (C14–C20) olefins occurred (up to 10cm deep) within a 6.5km2 “footprint” around the well. The olefin concentration in most sediments decreased an order of magnitude between 2010/2011 and 2014, at least in part due to biodegradation, evidenced by the preferential loss C16 and C18 linear (α- and internal) versus branched olefins. Based on their persistence for 4-years in sediments around the Macondo well, and 13-years near a former unrelated drill site (~62km away), weathered SBM-derived olefins released during the DWH disaster are anticipated to persist in deep-sea sediment for (at least) a comparable duration.

The present study reports metal and arsenic contamination in sediments, as well as element accumulation and partitioning in the polychaete Diopatra neapolitana in the Ria de Aveiro lagoon (Portugal). The polychaetes biochemical performance and tissue regenerative capacity were also evaluated. The concentration of elements in sediments showed an increase of contamination among areas (areas A–G), but higher bioaccumulation was observed in organisms from a less contaminated area (area C, BAF>1). This study evidenced that individuals with higher elements bioaccumulation presented higher LPO and lower GSH/GSSG and also exhibited lower capacity for body regeneration. Polychaetes biotransformation capacity as well as antioxidant defense mechanisms were not sufficiently efficient to withstand the excess of ROS leading to increased LPO when organisms presented higher bioaccumulation levels. Additionally, an increase of methalotionines was also observed in individuals with higher bioaccumulation of metals and As, suggesting an induction of detoxification processes.

An integrated indicator system was developed for determining synthetic environmental responses under multiple types of coastal reclamation engineering in the Yellow River estuary, China. Four types of coastal engineering works were analyzed, namely port construction, petroleum exploitation, fishery and aquaculture, and seawall defense. In addition, two areas with limited human disturbances were considered for comparison. From the weights of the response value for each indicator, port construction was determined to be the primary impact contributor among the four engineering works studies. Specifically, hydrodynamic conditions, ecological status, economic costs, and engineering intensity were on average 72.78%, 65.03%, 75.03%, and 66.35% higher than those of other engineering types. Furthermore, fishery and aquaculture impact on water quality was 42.51% higher than that of other engineering types, whereas seawall defense impact on landscape variation was 51.75% higher than that of other engineering types. The proposed indicator system may provide effective coastal management in future.

Variable and occasionally high concentrations of cadmium in wild oysters at a remote location with the potential to develop aquaculture enterprises motivated research into the distribution and sources of metals in oysters, seawater, sediment, suspended solids and phytoplankton.Saccostrea mytiloides and Saccostrea mordax contained cadmium concentrations exceeding the food standard maximum level (ML) at three of four sites. At one site with high zinc levels in sediment, oyster cadmium levels were below the ML. Metal levels in seawater were not correlated with cadmium levels in oysters but high cadmium/zinc ratios were measured in Trichodesmium erythraeum blooms.We suggest that oysters accumulate cadmium mainly from annual phytoplankton blooms except at sites where zinc availability is sufficiently high to prevent uptake though a mechanism of antagonistic exclusion. Knowledge of the source and uptake mechanisms of cadmium in oysters should lead to new management strategies to reduce cadmium levels in farmed oysters.

Destructive fishing using explosives occurs in a number of countries worldwide, negatively impacting coral reefs and fisheries on which millions of people rely. Documenting, quantifying and combating the problem has proved problematic. In March–April 2015 231h of acoustic data were collected over 2692km of systematically laid transects along the entire coast of Tanzania. A total of 318 blasts were confirmed using a combination of manual and supervised semi-autonomous detection. Blasts were detected along the entire coastline, but almost 62% were within 80km of Dar es Salaam, where blast frequency reached almost 10blasts/h. This study is one of the first to use acoustic monitoring to provide a spatial assessment of the intensity of blast fishing. This can be a useful tool that can provide reliable data to define hotspots where the activity is concentrated and determine where enforcement should be focused for maximum impact.
