Long-term increase in secondary exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides in European polecats Mustela putorius in Great Britain

As a result of legal protection and population recovery, European polecats (Mustela putorius) in Great Britain are expanding into areas associated with greater usage of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs). We analysed polecat livers collected from road casualties from 2013 to 2016 for residues of five SGARs. We related variation in residues to polecat traits and potential exposure pathways, by analysing stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) in their whiskers. 54 of 68 (79%) polecats had detectable residues of at least one SGAR. Bromadiolone (71%) was the most frequently detected compound, followed by difenacoum (53%) and brodifacoum (35%). Applying historical limits of detection to allow comparison between these new data and previous assessments, we show that in the 25 years from 1992 to 2016 inclusive, the rate of detection of SGARs in polecats in Britain has increased by a factor of 1.7. The probability of SGAR detection was positively related to increasing values of δ15N, suggesting that polecats feeding at a higher trophic level were more likely to be exposed. Total concentrations of SGARs in polecats with detectable residues were higher in polecats collected in arable compared to pastoral habitats, and in the west compared to the east of Britain. The number of compounds detected and total concentrations of SGARs increased with polecat age. There was no evidence of regional or seasonal variation in the probability of detecting SGARs, suggesting that the current risk of exposure to SGARs does not vary seasonally and has increased (from that in the 1990s) throughout the polecat's range. We recommend quantification of current practices in rodenticide usage, particularly in the light of recent regulatory changes, to enable assessment and mitigation of the risks of secondary exposure to rodenticides in non-target wildlife.

Agriculture is today indispensably connected with enormous use of pesticides. Despite tough regulation, their entrance into soil cannot be excluded and they might enter soil organisms and plants and continue further to terrestrial food chains. This study was conducted to investigate the bioaccumulation of two pesticides currently used in large amounts, the insecticide chlorpyrifos (CLP) and the fungicide tebuconazole (TBZ). Their detailed uptake kinetics in the model earthworm species Eisenia andrei were measured in two arable soils differing in organic carbon content (1.02 and 1.93% respectively). According to our results, a steady state was reached after 3–5 days for both pesticides and soils. The values of bioaccumulation factors calculated at the steady state ranged from 4.5 to 6.3 for CLP and 2.2–13.1 for TBZ. Bioaccumulation factors were also calculated as the ratio of uptake and elimination rate constants with results comparable with steady-state bioaccumulation factors. The results suggested that the degradation and bioaccumulation of tested compounds might be influenced by other factors than only total organic carbon (e.g. clay content). The lower Koc and hydrophobicity of TBZ relative to CLP probably led to higher availability of TBZ through pore water exposure. On the other hand, CLP's higher hydrophobicity probably caused an increase in availability by its additional uptake via ingestion. To enable a proper ecological risk assessment of current pesticides in soils, it is necessary to accurately determine their bioaccumulation in soil invertebrates. We believe that our study not only brings such information for two specific pesticides but also addresses key methodological issues in this area.

Inhibition of reductive transformation of arsenic (As) in flooded paddy soils is of fundamental importance for mitigating As transfer into food chain. Anaerobic arsenite (As(III)) oxidizers maintain As in less mobile fraction under nitrate-reducing conditions. In this study, we explored the dynamic profile of As speciation in porewater and As distribution among the pools of differential bioavailability in soil solid phase with and without nitrate treatment. In parallel, the abundance and diversity of As(III) oxidase gene (aioA) in flooded paddy soil with nitrate amendment was examined by quantitative PCR and aioA gene clone library. Furthermore, the impact of nitrate on As accumulation and speciation in rice seedlings was unraveled. With nitrate addition (25 mmol NO₃⁻ kg⁻¹ soil), porewater As(III) was maintained at a consistently negligible concentration in the flooded paddy soil and the reductive dissolution of As-bearing Fe oxides/hydroxides was significantly restrained. Specifically, nitrate amendment kept 81% of total soil As in the nonlabile fraction with arsenate (As(V)) dominating after 30 days of flooding, compared to only 61% in the unamended control. Nitrate treatment induced 4-fold higher abundance of aioA gene, which belonged to domains of bacteria and archaea under the classes α-Proteobacteria (6%), ß-Proteobacteria (90%), ɣ-Proteobacteria (2%), and Thermoprotei (2%). By nitrate addition, As accumulation in rice seedlings was decreased by 85% with simultaneously elevated As(V) ratio in rice plant relative to control after 22 days of growth under flooded conditions. These results highlight that nitrate application can serve an efficient method to inhibit reductive dissolution of As in flooded paddy soils, and hence diminish As uptake by rice under anaerobic growing conditions.

Inefficient biomass combustion in traditional cookstoves generates high levels of household air pollution (HAP) that is associated with numerous adverse environmental and human health conditions. Many cookstoves have been evaluated using laboratory tests, but past studies revealed discrepancies between laboratory and field measurements. Fuel re-loading, a common operation in actual use but not required in the laboratory test, might be a contributing factor to this laboratory-field gap. In this study, we evaluated the pollutant emissions performance of a semi-gasifier cooking stove using both laboratory and field measurements. Emission factors and real-time properties of CO and PM₂.₅ were separately measured during the following 4 phases of a typical cooking event: lighting, stable combustion, fuel re-loading and post fuel re-loading. We quantified the CO and PM₂.₅ contributions to total cooking event emissions in each phase. We found over 70% lower PM₂.₅ emissions and 60% lower CO emissions during 3 no re-loading laboratory tests compared with all 16 field tests. Lighting generated 83.8% ± 15.6% of the total PM₂.₅ and 39.1% ± 7.8% of the total CO in laboratory tests without fuel re-loading, and 57.8% ± 33.5% and 37.9% ± 21.2% of the total PM₂.₅ and CO in field tests, respectively. On average, fuel re-loading led to 29.1% ± 30.8% of PM₂.₅ emissions and 24.9% ± 22.6% of CO emissions in 16 field tests, which also contributed to significant discrepancies between laboratory and field-based emissions. According to the ISO IWA tiered stove ratings for emissions, fuel re-loading led to at least one tier lower ranking in both laboratory and field cookstove tests. Fuel re-loading could be an important factor causing laboratory-field discrepancy of emissions, thus it could be considered in future cookstove selection and intervention projects.

Hexachloronaphthalene (HxCN) is one of the most toxic and most bioaccumulative congeners of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) known to be present in animal and human adipose tissue. Unfortunately, little data is available regarding the negative effect of PCNs on endocrine function. The aim of the study was to investigate the direct influence of subacute (two and four-week) and subchronic (13-week) daily oral exposure of female rats to 30, 100 and 300 μg kg b.w.⁻¹ HxCN on ovarian, thyroid function and neurotransmitters level. The levels of selected sex hormones (progesterone: P and estradiol: E2) in the serum and uterus, regularity of estrous cycle, levels of thyroid hormones (fT3 and fT4), TSH, γ-aminobutyric acid and glutamate levels in selected brain areas and the activity of CYP1A1 and CYP2B in the liver were examined. Estrogenic action (elevated E2 concentration in the uterus and serum) was observed only after subacute exposure, and antiestrogenic activity (decreased E2 level and uterus weight) after 13 weeks administration of 300 μg kg b.w.⁻¹ day⁻¹. Subchronic administration of HxCN significantly lengthens the estrous cycle, by up to almost 50%, and increases the number of irregular cycles. In addition, increased TSH and decreased fT4 serum levels were observed after all doses and durations of exposure to HxCN. Only subacute exposure led to a significant decrease in the level of examined neurotransmitters in all analyzed structures. Additionally, exposure to low doses of HxCN appears to lead to strong induction of CYP1A1 in a liver. It can be hypothesized that HxCN produces effects which are very similar to those caused by 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and dioxin-like compounds (DLCs), particularly concerning endocrine and estrous cyclicity disorders. Therefore, HxCN exposure may exert unexpected effects on female fecundity among the general population.

Land application of biomass-derived biochar has been increasingly recommended as a beneficial soil amendment for nutrients (such as N, P) retention. However, the small-scale biochar particles, especially those in the nano-scale range, may carry nutrients downward the soil profile, reducing nutrition retention and posing a potential risk to the groundwater. In this study, column experiments were conducted to investigate the retention and transport of phosphorus (P) in two acidic and two alkaline soils as affected by wood chip-derived biochar nanoparticles (NPs). In acidic paddy and red soils, biochar NPs facilitated the retention of P, increasing by about 24% and 16%, respectively, compared to the biochar absence. It is because biochar NPs stabilize soil Fe/Al oxides and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), thereby reducing the release of Fe/Al oxides- and DOC-associated P. In contrast, in alkaline huangmian and chao soils, retention of P was reduced in the presence of biochar NPs, decreasing by about 23% and 18%, respectively. It was mainly due to the increased transport of Fe/Al oxides-associated P in effluents. Moreover, biochar NPs could also act as a P carrier, mediating the retention of P. The diffusive gradients in thin films provided in-suit measurement of labile P in soil profiles, showing much lower labile P from retained P in acidic soils than that from alkaline soils though the labile P with biochar NPs presence was increased in all soils. Our findings indicate that biochar NPs have contrasting effects on the retention of P in acidic and alkaline soils, implying the cautious land applications of biochar for nutrients retention in soils with different acidities.

Substantial efforts have been made in recent years to investigate the horizontal variability of air pollutants at regional and urban scales and epidemiological studies have taken advantage of resulting improvements in exposure assessment. On the contrary, only a few studies have investigated the vertical variability and their results are not consistent. In this study, a field experiment has been conducted to evaluate the variation of concentrations of different particle metrics and gaseous pollutants on the basis of floor height at a high rise building. Two 15-day monitoring campaigns were conducted in the urban area of Bologna, Northern Italy, one of the most polluted areas in Europe. Measurements sites were operated simultaneously at 2, 15, 26, 44 and 65 m a.g.l. Several particulate matter metrics including PM₂.₅ mass and chemical composition, particle number concentration and size distribution were measured. Time integrated measurement of NO₂ and BTEX were also included in the monitoring campaigns. Measurements showed relevant vertical gradients for most traffic related pollutants. A monotonic gradient of PM₂.₅ was found with ground-to-top differences of 4% during the warm period and 11% during the cold period. Larger gradients were found for UFP (∼30% during both seasons) with a substantial loss of particles from ground to top in the sub-50 nm size range. The largest drops in concentrations for chemical components were found for Elemental Carbon (−27%), iron (−11%) and tin (−36%) during winter. The ground-to-top decline of concentrations for NO₂ and benzene during winter was equal to 74% and 35%, respectively. In conclusion, our findings emphasize the need to include vertical variations of urban air pollutants when evaluating population exposure and associated health effects, especially in relation to some traffic related pollutants and particle metrics.

Heavy metal pollution of urban stormwater poses potential risks to human and ecosystem health. The design of reliable pollution mitigation strategies requires reliable stormwater modelling approaches. Current modelling practices do not consider the influence of urbanisation characteristics on stormwater quality. This could undermine the accuracy of stormwater quality modelling results. This research study used a database consisting of over 1000 datasets to compare the characteristics of heavy metal build-up (one of the most important stormwater pollutant processes) on urban surfaces under the influence of anthropogenic and natural factors specific to different urban regions from China (Shenzhen) and Australia (Gold Coast), using Bayesian Networks. The outcomes show that the differences in heavy metals build-up loads between the two regions (mean value for Shenzhen – mean value for Gold Coast)/mean value for Shenzhen) were 0.45 (Al), 0.88 (Cr), 0.99 (Mn), 0.68 (Fe), 0.98 (Ni), 0.24 (Cu), 0.47 (Zn) and 0.13 (Pb), respectively. The research outcomes also confirmed that the influence of traffic on the build-up of different sized particles varies between Shenzhen and Gold Coast, and traffic plays distinct roles as a source and as a factor that drives heavy metal re-distribution. The road surface roughness was also found to influence build-up process differently between the two regions. More importantly, the assessment of inherent process uncertainty revealed that heavy metal build-up between different road sites in Shenzhen varies over a wider range than in Gold Coast. The study highlighted a clear distinction in the influence of sources and key anthropogenic factors on the variability of particle-bound heavy metals build-up between geographically different urban regions. The study outcomes provide new knowledge to enhance the accuracy of urban stormwater quality modelling.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the adverse effects of wastewater effluents on freshwater crucian carp, Carassius auratus, inhabiting Sincheon stream using the integrated biomarker response (IBR) at the genotoxic (micronucleus [MN] test), oxidative stress (activity of catalase [CAT] and glutathione S-transferase [GST], and level of lipid peroxidation [LPO]), histopathological (degree of tissue changes [DTC]), and physiological (condition factor [CF] and liver somatic index [LSI]) levels. The CF and LSI were significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced in fish from downstream sites (DS1 and DS2) as compared to that of upstream (US) fish samples. Moreover, a significant increase in morphometric indices (DTC) was observed in C. auratus collected from downstream sites (p < 0.05) and histopathological responses showed the degree of pathogenicity in the order of liver > kidney > gills. The activities of CAT, GST, and LPO in fish from the DS1 and DS2 sites were notably increased in gills, liver, and kidney compared to that of fish from the US site. Additionally, the MN test level in C. auratus from the DS1 and DS2 were significantly increased (p < 0.05) when compared with that of the US site. Considering the higher bioaccumulation of Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, and Pb in gills, liver, and kidney of C. auratus collected from downstream sites compared to that of the upstream site (p < 0.05), the observed toxicity was likely attributable to metal accumulation. The multi-level IBR index was higher at the DS1 site (15.08) than at the DS2 (1.02) and the reference US (0.00) sites. Therefore, these findings demonstrated that wastewater effluent discharge induces significant DNA damage, oxidative stress, and tissue injuries in C. auratus and suggested that the multi-level IBR approach should be used to quantify these effects on fish in streams and rivers.

Prenatal disinfection by-products (DBPs) exposure is linked with adverse birth outcomes. Genetic susceptibility to DBP metabolism may modify the exposure-outcome associations.To investigate whether CYP2E1 and GSTZ1 genetic polymorphisms modified the associations of prenatal DBP exposures with adverse birth outcomes.Two biomarkers of DBP exposures including trihalomethanes (THMs) in blood and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) in urine were determined among 426 pregnant women from a Chinese cohort study. CYP2E1 (rs2031920, rs3813867, and rs915906) and GSTZ1 (rs7975) polymorphisms in cord blood were genotyped. Statistical interactions between prenatal DBP exposures and newborns CYP2E1 and GSTZ1 polymorphisms on birth outcomes (birth weight, birth length, and gestational age) were examined by multivariable linear regression with adjustment for potential confounders.We found that newborns CYP2E1 genetic polymorphisms (rs2031920 and rs3813867) modified the associations of maternal blood THMs or urinary TCAA levels with birth outcomes. However, these interactions were nonsignificant after Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons, except for the interaction between maternal blood BrTHMs [sum of dibromochloromethane (DBCM), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), and bromoform (TBM)] and newborns CYP2E1 gene rs2031920 polymorphisms on birth weight (P for interaction = 0.003).Newborns genetic variations of CYP2E1 rs2031920 may modify the impacts of prenatal BrTHM exposure on birth weight. This finding needs to be further confirmed.
