The Kızılırmak Delta is one of the most important agricultural production regions and it was included as part of the Ramsar Convention in 1998. The water used in agricultural irrigation is mostly supplied from drainage channels. In the present study, 120 water samples were collected from drainage channels and analyzed to characterize the groundwater chemistry and microbiological contamination. Sea water interface, discharge of sewage, wastewater from agricultural activities and livestock and uncontrolled solid waste landfills were identified as the most important pollutant sources in the delta. Serious microbiological pollution was detected in channel water samples. These results indicate that sewage waters mix with the channel waters in the delta. Also, the correlations of parameters such as EC, TDS, DO, Cl⁻ and SO₄²⁻ indicate that channel waters contain high dissolved minerals. It was concluded that especially agricultural pollution and waste water affects water resources negatively in the region.

Recent increased use of agricultural machines elevated the atmospheric pollutant emissions in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in eastern China. Given the potentially large environmental and health impacts in busy seasons with enhanced machinery usage, it is important to accurately estimate the magnitude, spatial and temporal distributions of the emissions. We developed a novel method to estimate the real-world in-use agricultural machinery emissions, by combining satellite data, land and soil information, and in-house investigation. The machinery usage was determined based on the spatial distribution, growing and rotation pattern of the crops. The varied requirement of machinery power by heterogeneous soil texture, which was ignored in the previous studies, was considered in our methodology. The spatiotemporal pattern of machinery usage was determined based on the explored quantitative correlation between the local agricultural activity duration and the geographic location of the activity. A “grid-based” (30 × 30 m) inventory with daily emissions was then obtained, achieving significant improvement on spatial and temporal resolution. It substantially diminished the bias of previous inventories based on the machinery population or power installation census data. The emissions of NOX, PM₂.₅, CO and THC were estimated at 36300, 2000, 36900 and 8430 metric tons in YRD, with the majority contribution from Anhui and Jiangsu. Ten cities locating in northern and central Anhui and Jiangsu contributed the largest machinery emissions, accounting for 60% of the total emissions in YRD. Harvesting was found to have the largest emissions, followed by tilling and planting. Regarding the crops, the emissions from wheat and rice related machinery usage were the largest. In the busy seasons (spring and autumn), larger daily NOX and PM₂.₅ emissions were found from machinery than on-road vehicles in 42% of counties in Anhui and Jiangsu, highlighting the necessity of careful strategy making on controls of priority emission source.

Recently, we reported that hypoxia disrupts the endocrine system and causes metabolic abnormalities in prawns. Although transgenerational impairment effects of hypoxia have become a hot topic in vertebrate, it is unknown whether hypoxia could exert cross-generational effects on testicular function crustaceans. The present study aimed to investigate hypoxia’s toxic effects on the testicular function of oriental river prawns (Macrobrachium nipponense) and offspring development. Hypoxia disrupted testicular germ cells quality, caused sex hormone imbalance (testosterone and estradiol), and delayed testicular development. The F1 generation derived from male prawns exposed to hypoxia showed retarded embryonic development, and reduced hatching success and larval development, despite not being exposed to hypoxia. Analysis of the transcriptome the F0 generation (exposed to hypoxia) showed that the impaired testicular functions were associated with changes to mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, apoptosis, and steroid biosynthesis. Interestingly, quantitative real-time PCR confirmed that hypoxia could significantly suppress the expression of antioxidant and gonad development-related genes in the testis of the F1 generations, with and without continued hypoxia exposures. In addition, paternal exposure to hypoxia could result in a higher production of reactive oxygen species in offspring testis tissue compared with those without hypoxia exposure. The cross-generational effects of testicular function implied that the sustainability of natural freshwater prawn populations would be threatened by chronic hypoxia.

PM₂.₅ exposure is an emerging environmental concern and severe health insult closely related to psychological conditions such as anxiety and depression in adolescence. Adolescence is a critical period for neural system development characterized by continuous brain maturation, especially in the prefrontal cortex. The etiology of these adolescent conditions may derive from fetal origin, probably attributed to the adverse effects induced by intrauterine environmental exposure. Anxiety- and depression-like behavior can be induced by gestational exposure to PM₂.₅ in mice offspring which act as a useful model system. Recent studies show that B-vitamin may alleviate PM₂.₅-induced hippocampal neuroinflammation- and function-related spatial memory impairment in adolescent mice offspring. However, cortical damage and related neurobehavioral defects induced by gestational PM₂.₅ exposure, as well as the potential reversibility by interventions in mice offspring require to be elucidated. Here, we aimed to investigate whether B-vitamin would protect mice offspring from the adverse effects derived from gestational exposure to urban PM₂.₅ on cortical areas to which anxiety and depression are closely related. Pregnant mice were divided into three groups: control group (treated with PBS alone), model group (treated with both PM₂.₅ and PBS), and intervention group (treated with both PM₂.₅ and B-vitamin), respectively. The mice offspring were then applied to comprehensive neurobehavioral, ultrastructural, biochemical, and molecular biological analyses. Interestingly, we observed that gestational PM₂.₅ exposure led to neurobehavioral defects including anxiety- and depression-like behavior. In addition, neuroinflammation, oxidative damage, increased apoptosis, and caspase-1-mediated inflammasome activation in the prefrontal cortex were observed. Notably, both behavioral and molecular changes could be significantly alleviated by B-vitamin treatment. In summary, our results suggest that the anxiety- and depression-like behavior induced by gestational PM₂.₅ exposure in mice offspring can be ameliorated by B-vitamin supplementation, probably through the suppression of apoptosis, oxidative damage, neuroinflammation, and caspase-1-mediated inflammasome activation.

Rainwater chemistry plays an important role in the earth-surficial ecosystem, but studies on rainwater chemical composition of karst agro-ecosystem are rare. To explore the rainwater alkalization and the provenance of components responsible for neutralization, two-years chemical monitoring of rainwater was carried out in a karst agricultural catchment in Southwest China. The main findings suggest that SO₄²⁻, NO₃⁻, Ca²⁺, and NH₄⁺ are the principal ions. All the ionic contents show distinctly seasonal variation (highest in winter) in response to variations in seasonal precipitation because the rain-scour process can efficiently remove atmospheric materials. Source identification indicates that Cl⁻ and Na⁺ are mainly derived from marine input whereas SO₄²⁻ and NO₃⁻ are controlled by anthropogenic emission, in particular, fixed emission sources. The source of NH₄⁺ is attributed to intense agricultural production, while Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ are mainly derived from calcite dissolution. The rainwater alkalization caused by the seasonal acid neutralization (via basic components, Ca²⁺ and NH₄⁺) is beneficial to crop growth but also reflect agricultural overfertilization. Sulfur controlled the total wet acid deposition (68%–94%) and could be a potential agent of weathering.

Nicotine (Nic) exposed to the environment which comes from tobacco products is the main addictive agent and specific classes of hazardous compound that merit concern. In this study, we have established a fast and reliable method to achieve specific detection of Nic in natural nicotiana tabacum within 30 s through a miniaturized platform based on screen printed gold electrode (SPE). A simple electrochemical pretreatment mean was employed on gold surface that led to the exposure of Au (111) facet and a convenient sample pretreatment method was adopted to realize the extraction of Nic in tobacco. The present electrochemical sensor exhibits an ample range of sensing from 10 μg/g to 200 μg/g, which is able to compliance with tobacco industry testing standards of actual samples. Over 60 sampling points from different origins in China or other countries were performed with direct analysis using this method and satisfactory results have been obtained. The proposed approach was demonstrated to be a very promising platform for significantly improving analytical efficiency in laboratories as well as for monitoring the source reduction control of Nic in the environment.

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a hazardous compound for human health and for environmental compartments. Its transfer and deposition through the atmosphere affects soil quality. In this context, we quantified the content of BaP and other Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the soils of a prominent Coal Region in Transition to test whether the soil screening levels in force are realistic and whether they reflect the complexity of regions closely linked to heavy industries and mining. In this regard, soil screening levels are thresholds often established without considering historical anthropogenic activities that affect soil (diffuse pollution). The 150 soil samples studied showed a notable content of high molecular weight PAHs, and BaP surpassed the threshold levels in practically the entire area. PAH-parent diagrams revealed a relatively homogenous fingerprint of four clusters obtained in a multivariate statistical study. In addition, molecular diagnostic ratios pointed to coal combustion as the main pollution source, whereas only some outliers appeared to be related to specific spills. A BaP threshold was calculated to be 0.24 mg kg⁻¹, over 10 times the limit established in Spain. Finally, a factor analysis revealed a positive correlation of BaP with elements usually emitted in coal combustion processes, such as Tl and V. This observation fosters the hypothesis of a historical and indelible pollution fingerprint in soils whose sources, characteristics and potential environmental and health concerns deserve further attention. All things considered, caution should be taken when using soil screening levels in regions associated with coal exploitation and heavy industry.

Sheng, Pengfei | Zhai, Mengxin | Zhang, Yuechi | Kamal, Muhammad Abdul
While considerable efforts have been made to address the relationship between urbanization and environmental issues, few of them focus on household emissions. Thus, this work aimed at evaluating the effect of urbanization on household wastewater emissions, and made a distinction between the efficient- and the inefficient-emissions. We compiled a China’s provincial dataset over the period 2005–2017, and estimates indicated that a 1% rise in the urbanization was correlated with a 0.581 increase of efficient emissions, while inefficient emissions decreased by 7.606. As of 2017, the sample period end year, the inefficient emissions accounted for 10.5% of the total emissions of China as a whole, which was relatively large and could not be overlooked. Meanwhile, a back-of-the-envelope estimate revealed that urbanization had a negative impact on China’s total emissions, with a marginal effect ranging from −0.226 to −1.354 over the sample period. The above findings, however, did not imply that urbanization would spontaneously reduce the inefficient- and total-emissions. Thus, the government in the process of urbanization should strengthen environmental education, municipal facilities, and others.

The occurrence of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) in the environment is becoming a major area of concern due to their undesirable effects on non-target organisms. This study investigated the occurrence and risk of contamination by five antibiotics and three antiretrovirals drugs in a fast-growing peri-urban area in Kenya, with inadequate sewer system coverage. Due to poor sewage connectivity and poorly designed decentralized systems, wastewater is directly released in open drains. Water and sediment samples were collected from open surface water drains, while wastewater samples were collected from centralized wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Solid-phase extraction and ultrasonic-assisted extraction for the aqueous and sediment samples respectively were carried out and extracts analyzed by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) using isotopically labeled internal standards. APIs were observed with the detection frequency ranging from 36% to 100%. High mean concentrations of 48.7 μg L⁻¹, 108 μg L⁻¹, and 532 μg L⁻¹ were observed in surface drains for Lamivudine (3 TC), Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), Ciprofloxacin (CIP) respectively. Drain sediments also showed high concentrations of APIs ranging from 2.1 to 13,100 μg kg⁻¹. APIs in this study exceeded those observed in existing literature studies. JKUAT WWTP removal efficiencies varied from −90.68% to 72.67%. Total APIs emission load of the study area was 3550 mg d⁻¹ with WWTP effluent contributing higher loads (2620 mg d⁻¹) than surface water drains (640 mg d⁻¹). Zidovudine (ZDV), nevirapine (NVP), and trimethoprim (TMP) loads in drains, however, exceeded WWTP effluent. Low to high ecotoxicity risk of the individual APIs were observed to the aquatic environment, with high risks for the development of antibiotic resistance in microbiome as determined by the risk quotient (RQ) approach. Risk management through efficient wastewater collection, conveyance, and treatment is necessary to suppress the measured concentrations.

Soil contaminants can cause direct harm to lizards due to their regular swallowing of soil particles. As the world’s fastest growing insecticide with long half-life in soil, the endocrine disrupting effect of neonicotinoids on lizards deserves more attention. In this report, we assessed the endocrine disrupting effect of imidacloprid on Eremias argus during 28 days of continuous exposure. Among the imidacloprid and its metabolites, only the metabolite 6-chloropyridic acid had a significant accumulation in the gonads and was positively correlated with its blood concentration. Imidacloprid might cause endocrine disrupting effects on lizards in two ways. First, the desnitro metabolites of imidacloprid could accumulate in the brain, inhibited the secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, and ultimately affected the feedback regulation of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal related hormones. Secondly, imidacloprid severely inhibited the gene expression of the corresponding enzymes in the gonadal anti-oxidative stress system, causing histological damage to the gonads and ultimately affecting gonadal function. Specifically, exposure to imidacloprid resulted in abnormal arrangement of spermatogenic epithelial epithelium, hyperplasia of epididymal wall, and oligospermia of male lizard. Meanwhile, gene expressions of cyp17, cyp19, and hsd17β were severely inhibited in the imidacloprid exposure group, consistent with decreased levels of testosterone and estradiol in plasma. Imidacloprid exposure could cause insufficient androgen secretion and less spermatogenesis in male lizards. The risk of imidacloprid exposure to female lizards was not as severe as that of male lizards, but it still inhibited the expression of cyp19 in the ovaries and led to a decrease in the synthesis of estradiol. This study firstly reported the endocrine disruption of imidacloprid to lizards, providing new data for limiting the use of neonicotinoids.
