The ubiquitous presence of microplastics (MPs) has been demonstrated in all environmental compartments in the recent years. They are detected in air, freshwater, soil, organisms and particularly in marine ecosystems. Since sediments are known to be the major sink of many organic and inorganic pollutants, the aim of this study was to develop and validate a fast and cheap methodology to assess the MP contamination in intertidal sediments from the Gulf of Biscay (Pays de la Loire region, France). Sediments were sampled at three locations (Pays de la Loire region, France) and during two seasons: October 2015 and March 2016. The analytical protocol involved MP extraction from dried sediments using milliQ water and a centrifugation technique. After a filtration step of supernatants, MPs were detected and directly identified on the membrane filters using μFTIR spectroscopy in reflection mode. For the first time, the number of replicates allowing to obtain a satisfying representativeness of the whole sampled sediment was also evaluated at 10 replicates of 25 g each. The average number of MPs in sediments was 67 (±76) MPs/kg dw (N = 60) with no significant difference between sites and seasons. Ten different compositions of MPs were defined by μFT-IR with a high proportion of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE), 38 and 24%, respectively. Among MPs, mainly fragments (84%) were observed with main size classes corresponding to [>100 μm] and [50–100 μm] but no particles > 1 mm could be found suggesting that mainly small microplastics (<1 mm) were subject to vertical transport.

With increasing problems of drug abuse worldwide, aquatic ecosystems are contaminated by human pharmaceuticals from the discharge of hospital or municipal effluent. However, ecotoxicity data and related toxic mechanism for neuroactive controlled or illicit drugs are still lacking, so assessing the associated hazardous risk is difficult. This study aims to investigate the behavioral changes, oxidative stress, gene expression and neurotoxic or apoptosis effect(s) in larvae of medaka fish (Oryzias latipes) with environmentally relevant exposures of ketamine (KET) solutions for 1–14 days. KET exposure at an environmentally relevant concentration (0.004 μM) to 40 μM conferred specific patterns in larval swimming behavior during 24 h. At 14 days, such exposure induced dose- and/or time-dependent alteration on reactive oxygen species induction, the activity of antioxidants catalase and superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferase and malondialdehyde contents in fish bodies. KET-induced oxidative stress disrupted the expression of acetylcholinesterase and p53-regulated apoptosis pathways and increased caspase expression in medaka larvae. The toxic responses of medaka larvae, in terms of chemical effects, were qualitatively analogous to those of zebrafish and mammals. Our results implicate a toxicological impact of waterborne KET on fish development and human health, for potential ecological risks of directly releasing neuroactive drugs-containing wastewater into the aquatic environment.

The use of dynamic membranes as a low-cost alternative for conventional membrane for the treatment of landfill leachate (LFL) was investigated in this study. For this purpose a lab-scale, submerged pre-anoxic and post-aerobic bioreactor configuration was used with nylon mesh as dynamic membrane support. The study was conducted at ambient temperature and LFL was fed to the bioreactor in gradually increasing concentration mixed with tap water (from 20% to 100%). The results of this study demonstrated that lower mesh pore size of 52 μm achieved better results in terms of solid-liquid separation performance (turbidity <10 NTU) of the formed dynamic membrane layer as compared to 200 and 85 μm meshes while treating LFL. Consistently high NH₄⁺-N conversion efficiency of more than 98% was achieved under all nitrogen loading conditions, showing effectiveness of the formed dynamic membrane in retaining slow growing nitrifying species. Total nitrogen removal reached more than 90% however, the denitrification activity showed a fluctuating profile and found to be inhibited by elevated concentrations of free nitrous acid and NO₂⁻-N at low pH values inside the anoxic bioreactor. A detailed metagenomic analysis allowed a taxonomic investigation over time and revealed the potential biochemical pathways involved in NH₄⁺-N conversion. This study led to the identification of a dynamic system in which nitrite concentration is determined by the contribution of NH₄⁺ oxidizers (Nitrosomonas), and by a competition between nitrite oxidizers (Nitrospira and Nitrobacter) and reducers (Thauera).

2018

The Red River Delta is a major agricultural production area of Vietnam with year-round use of pesticides for paddy rice cultivation and other production systems. The delta is protected from flooding, storm surges and saline water intrusion by a sophisticated river and sea-dyke system. Little is known about the effects of such a dyke system on pesticide pollution in the enclosed landscape. Our aim was to address this gap by i) determining pesticide prevalence in soils and sediments within a dyked agricultural area, and by ii) assessing whether and to which degree this dyke system might affect the spatial distribution of pesticides. After sampling paddy rice fields (topsoil) and irrigation ditches (sediment) perpendicular to the dyke in Giao Thuy district, we analysed 12 of the most commonly used pesticides in this area. In soils, we detected most frequently isoprothiolane (100% detection frequency), chlorpyrifos (85%) and propiconazole (41%) while in sediments isoprothiolane (71%) and propiconazole (71%) were most frequently found. Maximum concentrations reached 42.6 μg isoprotiolane kg⁻¹ in soil, and 35.1 μg azoxystrobin kg⁻¹ in sediment. Our results supported the assumption that the dyke system influenced residue distribution of selected pesticides. More polar substances increasingly accumulated in fields closer to the sea-dyke (R² = 0.92 for chlorpyrifos and 0.51 for isoprothiolane). We can thus support initiatives from local authorities to use the distance to dykes as a mean for deliniating zones of different environmental pollution; yet, the degree at which dykes influence pesticide accumulation appear to be compound specific.

2018
Musee, N.
Trends in the widespread use of personal care products (PCPs) containing triclosan (TCS) and triclocarban (TCC) have led to continuous emissions of these chemicals into the environment. Consequently, both chemicals are ubiquitously present at high concentrations in the aquatic systems based on widely reported measured environmental concentration (MECs) data in different environmental systems (e.g. freshwater) worldwide, especially in developed countries. In developing countries, however, lack of MECs data is a major issue, and therefore, inhibits effective risk assessment of these chemicals. Herein, TCS and TCC releases from personal care products (PCPs) were quantified, using a modelling approach to determine predicted environmental concentrations (PECs) in wastewater, freshwater, and soils, and likely risk(s) were estimated by calculating risk quotient (RQs). TCS and TCC in freshwater had RQs >1 based on estimated PECs with wide variations (≈2–232) as performed across the three dilutions factors (1, 3, and 10) considered in this study; an indicator of their likely adverse effect on freshwater organisms. In untreated and treated wastewater, TCS RQs values for bacteria were >1, but <1 for TCC, implying the former may adversely affect the functioning of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and with no plausible impacts from the latter. In terrestrial systems, RQ results for individual chemicals revealed no or limited risks; therefore, additional investigations are required on their toxicity, as effects data was very limited and characterised by wide variations. Future national monitoring programs in developing countries should consider including TCS and TCC as the results suggest both chemicals are of concern to freshwater, and TCS in WWTPs. Potential risks of their metabolites remain unquantified to date.

Numerous epidemiological studies have indicated the adverse cardiovascular effects of air pollution on heart failure (HF) risk. However, little data are available directly evaluating the association of ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with HF risk. We aimed to estimate the short-term effects of ambient VOCs on HF emergency hospitalizations in Hong Kong and to evaluate whether the associations were modified by sex and age.We collected the daily VOCs concentrations from the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department between April 2011 to December 2014. HF emergency hospital admission data were obtained from the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong. Generalized additive model (GAM) integrated with the distributed lag model (DLM) was used to estimate the excess risks of HF emergency hospitalizations with ambient concentrations of each VOCs groups – alkane, alkene, alkyne, benzene and substituted benzene. We observed short-term effects of alkyne and benzene on an increased risk of HF emergency hospitalizations. The cumulative effect over 0–6 lag days (dlm₀₋₆) for an IQR increment of alkyne (1.17 ppb) was associated with 4.2% (95% CI: 1.18%–7.26%) increases of HF emergency hospitalizations, while the corresponding effect estimate over dlm₀₋₂ for benzene per IQR (0.43 ppb) was 2.7% (95% CI: 0.39%–5.04%). Each VOCs groups was significantly associated with HF emergency hospitalizations in men.Ambient volatile organic compounds, particularly alkyne and benzene, were associated with increased risks of heart failure in the Hong Kong population.

2018
Liu, Han | Chen, Qian | Lei, Lei | Zhou, Wei | Huang, Lisu | Zhang, Jun | Chen, Dan
Evidence has shown that leukocyte telomere length (LTL) at birth is related to the susceptibility to various diseases in later life and the setting of newborn LTL is influenced by the intrauterine environment. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), as a kind of persistent organic pollutants, are commonly used in commercial and domestic applications and are capable of crossing the maternal-fetal barrier during pregnancy. We hypothesized that intrauterine exposure to PFASs may affect fetal LTL by increasing oxidative stress. To verify this hypothesis, LTL, concentrations of PFASs and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were measured in umbilical cord blood of 581 newborns from a prospective cohort. Our results showed that there were interactions between PFOS/PFDA and sex on LTL and ROS. The LTL was significantly shorter (0.926 ± 0.053 vs 0.945 ± 0.054, P = .023 for PFOS; 0.919 ± 0.063 vs 0.940 ± 0.059, P = .011 for PFDA) and the ROS levels were extremely higher (252.9 ± 60.5 [M] vs 233.5 ± 53.6 [M], P = .031 for PFOS; 255.2 ± 62.9 [M] vs 232.9 ± 58.3 [M], P = .011 for PFDA) in the female newborns whose PFOS or PFDA concentrations fell in the upmost quartile compared with those in the lowest quartile after adjusting for potential confounders. ROS levels were inversely associated with LTL in female newborns (β = −1.42 × 10⁻⁴, P = .022). 13% of the effect of PFOS on female LTL was mediated through ROS approximately by the mediation analyses. However, in male newborns, no relationships among PFASs, ROS and LTL were observed. Our findings suggest a “programming” role of PFASs on fetal telomere biology system in females in intrauterine stage.

This research is designed to determine the level and types of pollution in the highly contaminated sediments of the international Begej canal in Timiş district, Romania and north-eastern Serbia. The cross-border canal stretch investigated is currently not navigable, but represents an important waterway between the Danube River in Serbia and the city of Timisoara. Surface sediments were monitored annually from 2008 to 2016 at 36 representative sampling locations, with a wide range of analyses, including eight heavy metals of long-term monitoring concern (Ni, Zn, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, As and Hg) and the 16 USEPA PAHs. The purpose of this study was to determine the diversity and impact of anthropogenic and natural sources of pollution at the pollution hot spots on the canal: at the Itebej lock (near the border with Romania) and downstream at the Klek lock.Sediment quality and ecological risk were assessed in order to determine pollutants of concern. Several multi-proxies were applied (e.g. geo-accumulation index (Igₑₒ), ecological risk index (RI) and total benzo[a]pyrene equivalent (B[a]Pₑq)). To determine and predict trends, multivariate statistical methods (factor analysis of principal component analysis (PCA/FA)) were carried out on the organic and inorganic parameters analysed. In the near-border region, acute and significant ecological impacts were observed. The heavy metals Hg, Cr, Pb, Cu and Zn, and the carcinogenic PAH dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, were historically the most frequently detected harmful substances to biota in this and the wider Pannonia region. This is the first long-term study to quantify and derivate the most frequently detected harmful substances of concern for this and similar sites in the wider region, and is additionally supported by significant national and similar environmental data from previous studies in the region.

Ribeiro, I.O. | Andreoli, R.V. | Kayano, M.T. | Sousa, T.R. | Medeiros, A.S. | Godoi, R.H.M. | Godoi, A.F.L. | Duvoisin, S. | Martin, S.T. | Souza, R.A.F.
In the 21st century, severe droughts associated with climate change will increase biomass burning (BB) in Brazil caused by the human activities. Recent droughts, especially in 2005, 2010, and 2015, caused strong socioeconomic and environmental impacts. The 2015 drought considered the most severe since 1901, surpassed the 2005 and 2010 events in respect to area and duration. Herein, based on satellite data, the 2005, 2010 and 2015 drought impacts on wildfire episodes and carbon monoxide (CO) variability during the dry and the dry-to-wet transition seasons were examined. The BB occurrences in the dry season were fewer during 2015 than during 2005 (−44%) and 2010 (−47%). Contrasting, the BB events in the dry-to-wet transition season, were higher during 2015 than during 2005 (+192%) and 2010 (+332%). The BB outbreaks were concentrated in the southern and southwestern Amazon during 2005, in the Cerrado region during 2010, and mainly in the central and northern Amazon during 2015, an area normally with few fires. The CO concentration showed positive variations (up to +30%) occurred in the southern Amazon and central Brazil during the 2005 and 2010 dry seasons, and north of 20 °S during the 2015–2016 dry-to-wet transition season. The BB outbreaks and the CO emissions showed a considerable spatiotemporal variability among the droughts of 2005, 2010, and 2016, first of them driven by local conditions in the tropical North Atlantic (TNA), characterized by warm than normal sea surface waters and the other two by the El Niño occurrences.

Maternal transfer toxicity of chemicals has mainly focused in fish on the chemical transfer from maternal generation to offspring, and limited information is available for the evaluation of effects of chemicals from a biological transfer perspective. In this study, first-generation (F0) zebrafish larvae (D. rerio) were exposed to 0, 50, 500 or 5000 ng/L TDCIPP from 14 days post fertilization (dpf) to 120 dpf. F0-generation zebrafish were paired, and F1-generation embryos were collected and continuously exposed to the same concentrations of TDCIPP until 150 dpf. F1-generation females were then paired with unexposed adult males, and maternal transfer effects on survival rate and body length were evaluated. Results demonstrated that maternal exposure to TDCIPP for two generations significantly decreased body length of F2-generation larvae, suggesting the occurrence of maternal transfer toxicity. The transfer of TDCIPP from maternal generation to offspring was evident, but microinjection of equal amounts of TDCIPP did not affect survival and body length of zebrafish larvae. Furthermore, maternal exposure to TDCIPP changed the concentrations of partial mRNAs and proteins in their eggs, and those changes were linked to maternal transfer toxicity (e.g., growth inhibition). These results suggested that in zebrafish changes in biological transfer may explain, at least in part, the observed maternal transfer toxicity of TDCIPP.
