A Systematic Review on Bioelectrochemical Systems Research
2017
Ghangrekar, M. M. | Chatterjee, Pritha
Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) convert the energy present in wastewater to recover resources like bioelectricity, hydrogen, nutrients, heavy metals, minerals, and industrial chemicals. Various aspects of BES have been discussed here along with their applications and other advantages towards bioenergy recovery. More scientifically organized cross-discipline research efforts are required to scale-up these systems and to get benefit of recovering useful energy from waste materials. Full-scale implementation of bioelectrochemical wastewater treatment is complicated because certain microbiological, technological, and economic challenges need to be resolved that have not previously been encountered in any other wastewater treatment system. BES has higher prospects for in situ remediation of polluted water body or marshy soils and sediments. This technology is likely to evolve as a way of treating sewage, industrial, or agricultural wastewater, not only by lowering the amount of energy required, but at the same time producing electricity, hydrogen, or other chemicals of high value. Thus, after improving the performance of the BES, widening the scope for products recovery by developing better understanding of the process and with efforts to reduce its production cost, it can become a sustainable technology for treatment of wastewater with added advantage of recovery of resources and bioenergy.

2017
Duckworth, Alan | Giofre, Natalie | Jones, Ross
The sediment rejection ability of 8 coral species of 5 families and 3 morphologies were assessed in a series of short term exposure tests over a sedimentation range of 0.5–40mgcm−2d−1 and one longer term exposure test of 235mgcm−2. Sediment accumulation rates on live corals and dead (enamel-covered) skeletons varied between morphologies, with branching species often more adept at self-cleaning. Flow rates (0–17cms−1) significantly affected sediment-shedding ability as did differences in particle sizes, with coarse silt rejected faster than fine silt, but only at very high (235mgcm−2) deposition rates. Siliciclastic sediment was rejected faster than carbonate sediments and smothering for many days by mms of low organic content carbonate sediment resulted in bleaching, but no mortality. The findings are discussed with respect to turbidity generated in natural and dredging-related resuspension events and in the context for impact prediction for dredging projects.

2017
O'Brien, Allyson L.
Understanding how pollution affects populations is critical for targeted environmental risk assessments and adequate protection of the environment. However, the vast majority of ecotoxicology studies still have a traditional focus of identifying effects on individual organisms and do not measure the effects at the population-level. Modelling tools that measure population effects of pollution are available and would add value to current ecotoxicology studies by aligning outcomes more closely to what needs to be protected. In this paper I outline three possible reasons why this knowledge gap still exists and consider how they could be adopted more broadly, including better considerations about what endpoints should be measured at the initial study design phase. The purpose of highlighting this knowledge gap is to assist in facilitating the integration of population-level endpoints into routine pollution monitoring programs and progress of ecologically relevant ecotoxicology research.

2017
Fu, Jie | Gong, Yanyan | Cai, Zhengqing | O'Reilly, S.E. | Zhao, Dongye
This study investigated the effects of 3 model oil dispersants (Corexit EC9500A, Corexit EC9527A and SPC 1000) on photodegradation of pyrene under simulated sunlight. Both Corexit dispersants enhanced photodegradation of pyrene, while SPC1000 slightly inhibited the reaction. Span 80 and Tween 85 were the key ingredients causing the effects, though the underlying mechanisms differed. Span 80 enriches pyrene in the upper layer of water column, whereas Tween 85 induces a photosensitization process. Two reactive oxygen species, 1O2 and O2−, were found responsible for pyrene photodegradation, though the presence of EC9500A suppressed the 1O2 pathway. In terms of photodegradation products, EC9500A enhanced generation of polyaromatic intermediates, i.e., phenaleno[1,9-cd][1,2]dioxine, 1-hydroxypyrene, and 1,8-pyrenequinone, but did not alter the classical photodegradation pathway. The Corexit dispersants were more prone to photochemical decomposition, with multiple by-products detected. The information aids in our understanding of the effects of dispersants on photochemical weathering of oil compositions.

2017
Egardt, Jenny | Nilsson, Per | Dahllöf, Ingela
Antifouling paints are widely used to avoid organisms settling on boat hulls. The active ingredients in the paints have differed over the years where lead, TBT, irgarol and diuron have been deemed too harmful to non-target organisms and subsequently been banned within the EU. Most of these compounds however are persistent in the environment and can cause problems long after they are deposited. We have examined if present-day and banned substances used in antifouling paints can be found in sediments in a national park on the Swedish west coast. Sampled locations include waterways, natural harbours and small marinas for leisure crafts to investigate if number of visiting boats affect the concentration of antifouling compounds in sediments.Few significant differences were found when comparing the different locations types, suggesting that overall boat presence is more important than specific mooring sites, however, several banned antifouling compounds were found in the surface sediments.

2017
Lewandowska, Anita Urszula | Śliwińska-Wilczewska, Sylwia | Woźniczka, Dominika
Bioaerosols were collected between April and November 2015 on land (Gdynia) and at sea (Southwestern Baltic), using six-step microbiological pollutant sampler. It was determined that picoplanktonic cyanobacteria of the genus Synechococcus, Synechocystis, Aphanocapsa, Aphanothece, Microcystis, Merismopedia, Woronichinia and Cyanodictyon were the most commonly found in aerosols both over land and at sea. Chlorophyta were also numerous (Chlorella vulgaris, Stichococcus bacillaris), as were Bacillariophyta and Ochrophyta (Phaeodactylum sp., Navicula cf. perminuta and Nannochloropsis cf. gaditana). As primary production and phytoplankton concentration in sea water grew, so did the diversity of the microorganisms identified in bioaerosols. Over the sea cyanobacteria and microalgae occurred more often in large aerosols (>3.3μm). Over land they were mainly the components of smaller particles. In respirable particles species both capable of producing harmful secondary metabolites and potentially toxic ones were identified. We assume that bioaerosols pose the actual threat to human health in Baltic Sea region.

2017
Wu, Yunna | Xu, Chuanbo | Ke, Yiming | Chen, Kaifeng | Xu, Hu
For tidal range power plants to be sustainable, the environmental impacts caused by the implement of various tidal barrage schemes must be assessed before construction. However, several problems exist in the current researches: firstly, evaluation criteria of the tidal barrage schemes environmental impact assessment (EIA) are not adequate; secondly, uncertainty of criteria information fails to be processed properly; thirdly, correlation among criteria is unreasonably measured. Hence the contributions of this paper are as follows: firstly, an evaluation criteria system is established from three dimensions of hydrodynamic, biological and morphological aspects. Secondly, cloud model is applied to describe the uncertainty of criteria information. Thirdly, Choquet integral with respect to λ-fuzzy measure is introduced to measure the correlation among criteria. On the above bases, a multi-criteria decision-making decision framework for tidal barrage scheme EIA is established to select the optimal scheme. Finally, a case study demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed framework.
اظهر المزيد [+] اقل [-]Effects of CO2-driven sediment acidification on infaunal marine bivalves: A synthesis
2017
Clements, Jeff C. | Hunt, Heather L.
While ocean acidification (OA) effects on marine organisms are well documented, impacts of sediment acidification on infaunal organisms are relatively understudied. Here we synthesize CO2-driven sediment acidification effects on infaunal marine bivalves. While sediment carbonate system conditions can already exceed near-future OA projections, sediments can become even more acidic as overlying seawater pH decreases. Evidence suggests that infaunal bivalves experience shell dissolution, more lesions, and increased mortality in more acidic sediments; effects on heavy metal accumulation appear complex and uncertain. Infaunal bivalves can avoid negative functional consequences of sediment acidification by reducing burrowing and increasing dispersal in more acidic sediments, irrespective of species or life stage; elevated temperature may compromise this avoidance behaviour. The combined effects of sediment acidification and other environmental stressors are virtually unknown. While it is evident that sediment acidification can impact infaunal marine bivalves, more research is needed to confidently predict effects under future ocean conditions.

2017
Xu, X. Y. | Yip, K.R. | Shin, P.K.S. | Cheung, S.G.
Predation of the muricid gastropod Thais clavigera on two-sized groups of the mussel Brachidontes variabilis was studied under three pCO2 levels, 380, 950, and 1250μatm. At 950μatm pCO2 level, the prey handling time decreased significantly and large-sized B. variabilis were preferred by T. clavigera. However, the prey consumption rate was independent of pCO2 levels, although the prey searching time increased significantly at elevated pCO2. These findings indicated that the predator–prey interaction between T. clavigera and B. variabilis was altered under ocean acidification, which will have a long-term impact on the population dynamics of the interacting species.

2017
Colmenero, Ana I. | Barría, Claudio | Broglio, Elisabetta | García-Barcelona, Salvador
Juveniles of blue shark Prionace glauca caught in pelagic longlines targeting tuna and swordfish in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea were found entangled with plastic straps around their gill region. The plastic debris were identified as strapping bands and caused several degrees of injuries on the dorsal musculature and pectoral fins. They were also obstructing the gill slits probably causing breathing issues. These records were uploaded in the web site seawatchers.org, and highlight the potential of citizen science in revealing the occurrence of such problems which could help to measure the effects of plastic debris on marine life.
