Is reduced freshwater flow in Tigris-Euphrates rivers driving fish recruitment changes in the Northwestern Arabian Gulf?

Like fishing, natural regime shifts and human-induced environmental changes are often equally important factors in driving fish stock declines. In the Northwestern Arabian Gulf, many fish stocks are declining, raising questions about the reduction in the flow of Tigris-Euphrates rivers. Here we investigate the relationship between Tigris-Euphrates river flow and the estimated recruitment patterns from assessment models. We found a positive correlation between the estimated finfish recruitment trends and the flow of Tigris-Euphrates rivers. Additionally, the assessment model showed remarkably weak compensation ratio, likely indicating a reduction in the productivity of nursery area of two finfish stocks but not in that of the crustacean stock. Our investigation would be very critical in providing guidelines to the government agencies in the Northwestern Arabian Gulf as well as countries of Tigris-Euphrates basins: to consider the impacts associated with reductions in Tigris-Euphrates river flows on the ecosystem services of the region.

Steelmaking slag has been utilized in shore protection and to improve ocean environments of sea bottom sediments in semi-enclosed areas and coastal regions. This is achieved by reducing dissolved sulphide concentration. In this study, a numerical model is proposed and developed using a Eulerian-Lagrangian model coupled with an ocean circulation model to compute advection-diffusion of dissolved sulphides and fluid-particle interactions between ocean circulation and steelmaking slag. We applied the model to the Fukuyama inner harbour in the Seto Inland Sea and Tokyo Bay and compared our results with field data. The numerical results show good agreement with the field results. We demonstrate that steelmaking slag can control advection-diffusion with regard to concentration of hydrogen sulphide. The steelmaking slag could be a useful material in restoration of ocean environments at enclosed sea areas.

This study sought to develop a simple index for ranking birds' environmental sensitivity to oil in which birds are used as biological indicators. The study area consisted of both the Santos Estuarine System (SES), and the Laje de Santos Marine State Park (LSMSP), located in Southeastern Brazil. Information on the bird species and their feeding and nesting behaviors were obtained from the literature and were the basis of the sensitivity index created. The SES had a higher number of species, but only about 30% were found to be highly sensitive. The LSMSP presented a much lower number of species, but all of them were considered to be highly sensitive to oil. Due to its simplicity, this index can be employed worldwide as a decision-making tool that may be integrated into other management tools, particularly when robust information on the biology of birds is lacking.

Marine oil spill pollution is an important environmental problem in the world, especially crude oil-soaked marine sediments, because they are difficult to be remediated. In this study, in situ bioremediation of oil-soaked sediment was performed in the middle of the Bohai Sea. Oil-degrading bacteria were adsorbed on powdery zeolite (PZ)/granular zeolites (GZ) surfaces and then wrapped with poly-γ glutamic acid (γ-PGA). Settling column and wave flume experiments were conducted to model marine conditions and to select appropriate biological reagents. The optimal conditions were as follows: the average diameter of GZ 3 mm, mass ratio of GZ/PZ 2:1, and concentration of γ-PGA 7%. After bioremediation, over 50% of most oil-spilled pollutants n-alkanes (C12 to C27) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were degraded in 70 days. This work resulted in a successful trial of in situ bioremediation of oil-soaked marine sediments.

Marine pollution by plastics and microplastics (plastic particles 1 nm to 5 mm) is a recognized environmental issue. There are a few studies measuring the concentration of microplastics in the wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) effluent to the sea. Although microplastic concentrations are low in the WWTP effluent, the actual amount of microplastic ending up in the marine environment through WWTPs is quite significant. The present study is an extensive questionnaire-based survey to untrained managers of 101 WWTPs located all over Greece reporting visually-observed plastic items. 94 of the WWTPs have screens with gaps larger than 5 mm. This suggests that microplastics are passing through pretreatment to the main WWTP. In addition, 89 of the WWTP managers observed plastics in different tanks of the WWTPs. Cotton swab sticks are identified as the most common plastic found in WWTPs and the surrounding marine and coastal areas of the effluent pipes.

Thirty bottom sediment samples were collected from northern Hurghada coast, Red Sea, Egypt to evaluate the level of anthropogenic pollutants, using enrichment factor (EF), potential ecological risk index (PERI), soil pollution index (SPI), potential contamination index (Cp) and multivariate statistical analysis (correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and hierarchical cluster analysis). Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, Ni, Cu, Co and Cd were analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Results indicated that the average values of Pb and Cd were greater than the ones recorded from many other worldwide coastal areas. The studied sediments are extremely severe enrichment with Pb and Cd (EF > 50), severe enrichment with Zn (EF = 10–25), very high risk with Cd (PERI ≥ 320), high risk with Pb (160 ≤ PERI ˂ 320), highly contaminated with Pb (SPI > 3), a severe contamination with Pb (Cp > 3). The accumulation of pollutants is associated with the muddy and fine sediment; especially the studied area is a semi-closed bay, characterized by long time of water retention. Possible sources of metals pollution in the studied area are shipment operations and anticorrosive and antifouling paints, dredging and land filling, municipal wastewater from tourist centers and fishermen cargo boats.

An oil platform in the Mississippi Canyon 20 (MC-20) site was damaged by Hurricane Ivan in September 2004. In this study, we use medium- to high-resolution (10–30 m) optical remote sensing imagery to systematically assess oil spills near this site for the period between 2004 and 2016. Image analysis detects no surface oil in 2004, but ~40% of the cloud-free images in 2005 show oil slicks, and this number increases to ~70% in 2006–2011, and >80% since 2012. For all cloud-free images from 2005 through 2016 (including those without oil slicks), delineated oil slicks show an average oil coverage of 14.9 km2/image, with an estimated oil discharge rate of 48 to ~1700 barrels/day, and a cumulative oil-contaminated area of 1900 km2 around the MC-20 site. Additional analysis suggests that the detected oil slick distribution can be largely explained by surface currents, winds, and density fronts.

Biochemical and molecular responses were evaluated in oysters Crassostrea brasiliana collected from three oyster farms, at Guaratuba Bay, southern Brazil, forming a pollutant gradient: Farm 1 (reference site - farther from the urban area), Farm 2 (intermediate site) and Farm 3 (nearest to the urban area). Oxidative stress markers, DNA damage and transcript levels of CYP2AU1, CYP2-like1, CYP2-like2, SULT-like, GPx-like, SOD-like, CAT-like, GSTmicrosomal-like, GSTomega-like, FABP-like and ALAd-like genes were analyzed in the gills. The levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, linear alkylbenzenes and polychlorinated biphenyls were also evaluated in the soft tissues of the oysters and in the sediment of the Farms. Higher GSTomega-like, CYP2AU1 and FABP-like transcript levels, GR and G6PDH activities and lipid peroxidation levels were observed in oysters from Farms 2 and 3, suggesting pollutant effects on oysters. Alterations in oxidative stress markers also suggest a response against a prooxidant condition in C. brasiliana due to pollutant effects.

While sewage pollution is contributing to the global decline of coral reefs, its offshore extent and direct reef impacts from water column mixing and benthic seeps are poorly documented. We addressed this knowledge gap on a Hawaiian coral reef using sewage indicator and benthic cover measurements, macroalgal bioassays, and a pollution scoring tool. Fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) and nutrient concentrations were spatially variable in surface and benthic waters, with shoreline values being highest. Shoreline macroalgae δ15N and %N indicated high nitrogen loads containing sewage, while offshore surface and benthic values suggested lower nitrogen loads from environmental sources. Coral cover was negatively correlated with FIB, macroalgal δ15N, and nutrient concentrations. Benthic salinity and temperature measurements detected daily tidal groundwater pulses which may explain these associations. While pollution scores revealed that sewage was largely concentrated along the shoreline, results showed some reached the reef and may be contributing to its declining condition.

The levels and distribution of tris-(2,3-dibromopropyl) isocyanurate (TBC) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) in sediments in the intertidal zone of the New River Estuary were investigated. The concentration of TBC ranged from 2.78 to 35.1 ng·g−1dw, and the concentration of total HBCDs ranged from 10.3 to 43.5 ng·g−1dw. The composition of the three HBCD isomers, α-, β-, and γ-HBCD, was 6.23%, 8.00% and 85.8%, respectively. Moreover, the mass inventory of TBC, α-, β-, γ-HBCD, and total HBCDs in sediments were estimated to be about 1465.49, 124.64, 154.98, 1707.54, 1987.16 kg, respectively. Compared to previous studies, the concentrations of TBC and HBCDs in the intertidal zone of the New River Estuary were relatively high. Therefore, more concern of the potential public health and environmental risks of TBC and HBCDs is necessary.
