Synergistic reduction of a native key herbivore performance by two non-indigenous invasive algae

Native generalist grazers can control the populations of non-indigenous invasive algae (NIIA). Here, it was found that the simultaneous consumption of two co-occurring NIIA, Caulerpa cylindracea and C. taxifolia var. distichophylla, hinders the grazing ability of the main Mediterranean herbivorous, the native sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. The ingestion of any of the two NIIA alone did not produce any difference in sea urchin righting time with respect to usual algal diet. In contrast, the simultaneous consumption of both NIIA, which grow intermingled in nature and are consumed by P. lividus, retarded its righting behavior. Such result reveals substantial physiological stress in the sea urchin, which resulted in reduced motility and coordination. The reported findings reveal the potential of NIIA co-occurrence to escape the supposed control exerted by the main native generalist grazer in Mediterranean sublittoral communities, which in turn can be locked in an “invaded” state.

Haizhou Bay National Ocean Park is the first national ocean park in China. Consequently, the investigation of the spatial distribution characteristics, source apportionment, and ecological risks associated with heavy metals in this area is of great significance. Twelve sediment samples were collected in October 2016, and the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) method and the potential ecological risk index (PERI) method were used to assess the ecological risk. The results showed that the concentrations of the heavy metals (except Cr and Cu) in the surface sediments of the study area met the primary standard of marine sediment quality (GB18668-2002). The spatial distribution pattern of heavy metals in the surface sediments of Haizhou Bay National Ocean Park featured high concentrations in the southwestern region and low concentrations in the northeastern region, with a gradual decrease with increasing distance offshore, indicating that anthropogenic activities were the main source of heavy metal pollution. The evaluation results of the Igeo and PERI methods showed that Cd was the element posing the greatest ecological risk and that the ecological risk level in Haizhou Bay National Ocean Park corresponded to moderately contaminated. These findings indicate that effective management strategies should be developed to protect the marine environmental quality.

The gastrointestinal tracts of 229 demersal fish belonging to two species (Mullus barbatus, Merluccius merluccius) were examined for microplastic ingestion. Samples were collected in 3 different FAO Geographical Sub-Areas (GSA-9, GSA-17, GSA-19) of the Mediterranean Sea. Ingested microplastics were characterized using a stereo-microscope: observed, photographed, measured and categorized according to size class, shape and colour. Plastic fragments (ranging from 0.10 to 6.6 mm) were detected in 23.3% of the total investigated fish; a total of 65 plastic particles (66% constituted by fibers) were recorded. The percentage of plastic ingestion shows high variability between the two species and among the different sampling area. The highest frequency (48%) was found in European hake from GSA-19. These preliminary results represent a baseline for the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive descriptor 10 in Italy as well as an important step for detecting microplastics in bioindicator species from different GSAs.

We surveyed the deposition of drill cuttings on the seafloor along a transect at eight drilling locations in the south-western Barents Sea and Norwegian Sea, comparing traditional visual surveying methods and underwater hyperspectral imagery (UHI). The locations range from newly-drilled to around 30 years post-drilling. The visual assessments detected deposited drill cuttings to extend to around 150–200 m from the drilling location at recently drilled sites and generally less than 50 m at older locations. Quantitative UHI analyses of relative change in the spectral signature of the sediments with increasing distance from the drilling location mostly showed a change-over to conditions resembling undisturbed sediments at approximately similar distances as the visual assessments. Biological faunal community analyses also reflected these trends. The UHI-based detection of drill cuttings thus in general supported the results of visual assessments and potentially could be further developed as a method for automated surveying of drilling sites.

The complexity and scale of the sources, types and environmental impacts of persistent solid waste pollution (PSWP) continue to overwhelm the capabilities of government and private efforts to control it. Global cumulative production of virgin plastics is expected to quadruple by 2050 with a concomitant doubling of plastic waste. All nations must take significant steps to realize eventual mitigation of PSWP. These will include adopting a long-term PSWP elimination policy, creating an overarching authority to lead and coordinate a comprehensive national solid waste management program, and creating an International Convention for the Prevention of PSWP to enable global solutions for this global pollution. Initiating these changes will necessitate major, coordinated efforts on the part of environmental organizations, their supporting foundations and concerned citizens.

This study undertook to investigate the occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in the high and low-tide sediments of five coastal areas in Tamil Nadu, India. The abundance of microplastics vary from 439 ± 172 to 119 ± 72 (HTL) and 179 ± 68 to 33 ± 30 (LTL) items kg⁻¹ of sediments. The MP polymers found in the study sites are Polyethylene (73.2%), polypropylene (13.8%), nylon (8.2%), polystyrene (2.8%) and polyester (2%). The weathered surfaces might act as high-capacity carriers and this was confirmed by SEM-EDAX. The results of an analysis of the textures of the sediments do not ascribe any influence on microplastic abundance. The recreation, religious and fishing activities are the major contributors to plastic pollution in these beaches, which is borne out by the high abundance of MPs in the study sites. A regular and permanent waste management system should be put in place for the protection of beaches.

Numerical modelling is a key tool in understanding and determining the sources, trajectories and fates of micro-plastic debris (MPD). In this study, we introduce TrackMPD, a new modelling framework for the 3D transport of marine debris. TrackMPD fills the gaps in previous models by: (1) using a three-dimensional approach; (2) providing compatibility with a variety of ocean models; and (3) including a wide range of physical processes (advection, dispersion, windage, sinking, settling, beaching and re-floating) and MPD behaviours that depend on particle dynamical properties, and the fouling and degradation states. We implement a sensitivity analysis based on 44 scenarios to assess the relative importance of the different processes and behaviours on the MPD trajectories and fates. Results show that the MPD dynamical properties that impact their sinking, in particular plastic density and biofilm thickness and density, have the biggest effect on the MPD transport, followed by turbulent dispersion and washing-off.

Port baseline surveys (PBS) provide species inventories in and around ports, with a focus on non-indigenous species that may have been introduced by vessels, primarily via ballast water. PBS are an essential tool to support effective management strategies for non-indigenous as well as native harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens (HAOP). This paper describes the methodology of PBS that were conducted in 12 Adriatic ports. The PBS employed existing protocols that were adapted to meet the characteristics of the Adriatic sites. Their results are reported in several papers included in this special issue, each of which is devoted to a specific community. An overview of existing surveys protocols – which provide valuable support to decision-making and to design effective monitoring of non-indigenous species – is also supplied.

To explore the effects of coastal eutrophication and warming on phytoplankton biomass and cell size, we analyzed current and historical data for size-fractionated chlorophyll a (chla) in Xiangshan Bay, China. Results showed that micro- and nanophytoplankton overwhelmingly dominated (>84%) in all seasons. The contribution of micro-chla was significantly lower in warm than in cold seasons, whereas contribution of pico-chla showed the opposite result. Overall, the micro-chla contribution increased with decreasing pico-chla contribution from the stable, clear, eutrophic upper bay to the turbulent, turbid lower bay, indicating that phytoplankton size structure on a spatial scale was largely shaped by water column stability and light rather than by nutrients. Since the 1980s, phytoplankton biomass, primary productivity, and micro-chla contribution in Xiangshan Bay have increased sharply with increasing nutrient amounts and temperature. Additionally, it seems that algal bloom seasonality has shifted forward from spring to winter since the power plant operations in 2006.

Within tropical environments, short-term impacts of increased seawater temperature and pCO₂ on algae-herbivore interactions remain poorly understood. We investigated the isolated and combined 7-day effects of increased temperature (+4 °C) and pCO₂ (~1000 μatm) on the trophic interaction Ulva sp./Trochus histrio, by assessing: i) topshells’ survival and condition index; ii) grazer consumption rates, nutritional composition and interaction strength expressed as a dynamic index. No survival differences were observed whilst body condition varied significantly. Topshells under high pCO₂ displayed poor performance, concomitant with lower consumption of macroalgae. Individuals exposed to increased temperature had better physical condition, thus stimulating herbivory, which in turn was negatively correlated with carbon and nitrogen contents. The dynamic index was temperature- and pCO₂- interactively dependent, suggesting lower grazing pressure under single acidification. Despite some limitations inherent to a short-term exposure, this study provides new insights to accurately predict tropical species' phenotypic responses in a changing ocean.
