In this study, we used high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons, to investigate the spatio-temporal variation in bacterial communities in surface-waters collected from eight major outlets of the Pearl River Estuary, South China. Betaproteobacteria were the most abundant class among the communities, followed by Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Acidimicrobiia. Generally, alpha-diversity increased in winter communities and the taxonomic diversity of bacterial communities differed with seasonal and spatial differences. Temperature, conductivity, salinity, pH and nutrients were the crucial environmental factors associated with shifts in the bacterial community composition. Furthermore, inferred community functions that were associated with amino acid, carbohydrate and energy metabolisms were lower in winter, whereas the relative abundance of inferred functions associated with membrane transport, bacterial motility proteins, and xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism, were enriched in winter. These results provide new insights into the dynamics of bacterial communities within estuarine ecosystems.

Hengstmann, Elena | Tamminga, Matthias | vom Bruch, Constantin | Fischer, Elke Kerstin
To extent the understanding on microplastics in the marine environment we performed a case study at four beaches on the Isle of Rügen considering abundance and spatial distribution of microplastics in beach sediments. For the analysis, density separation via a glass elutriation column was implemented. In advance, efficiencies were tested for two polymers, being not buoyant in water. Recovery rates of 80% for PET and 72% for PVC particles in sandy samples were achieved.A median abundance of 88.10 (Q1=55.01/Q3=114.72) microplastic particles per kg dry sediment or 2862.56 (Q1=1787.34/Q3=3727.28) particles per m2 was found at the beaches on Rügen. Fibers were more abundant than fragments at all beaches. In this study, no statistically significant differences but only tendencies were determined between the beaches with different exposition and anthropogenic activity as well as for distribution patterns which showed that microplastic fragments accumulate in topographic depressions, similar to macrolitter items.

Six campaigns were performed in North Channel (CNOR), Barcas Channel (BC) and lower zones (EZ) of Tagus estuary to better understand methylmercury (MMHg) and mercury (Hg) transport and fate.Highest concentrations of particulate and dissolved MMHg were observed in CNOR in bottom waters and in the warmest months. The MMHg distribution coefficients between particulate and dissolved fractions were mainly influenced by particulate matter and dissolved organic carbon. The values were slightly higher in summer than in winter and in CNOR. Overall, results established that the tidal effect is a main driver on the transport and fate of Hg and MMHg from CNOR to outer areas, evidenced by the exportation of the Hg species from CNOR to the upstream station in high tide and to the downstream one in low tide. Therefore, CNOR may be considered a source of Hg and MMHg to the outer estuary.

The current status of the water quality in terms of nutrients and trace elements were assessed in the Uppanar river estuary, Southern India. Twenty-five sampling stations were monitored in the study area, which is dominated by anthropogenic activities such as agriculture, settlements and fishing harbour in the downstream. Whereas, the upstream and midstream is dominated by barren lands and industrial hub respectively. Nutrients and trace elements such as nitrate, phosphate, iron and lead exceed the permissible limit of WHO drinking water guidelines. The water quality index derived from WHO permissible limits reveal that most of the samples fall under fair to good category. The marginal to fair water quality is noticed in the midstream to downstream region, where anthropogenic activities are high. The multivariate statistical analysis divulges that the overall water quality is controlled by two major sources such as natural weathering of soil/bedrock and agricultural and industrial activities.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a primary environmental stressor for marine species inhabiting intertidal pools. Thus, the use of microhabitats as refuges is key to protect organisms against this stressor. In this study, we compared the quality of rocky and algae as refuges for the intertidal fish Girella laevifrons exposed to UV radiation. Refuge quality was studied by evaluating oxygen consumption and weight gain in control and UV-exposed fish. Rocky-refuge fish consumed less oxygen and gained significantly more weight than algal-refuge fish. The obtained results support the importance of refuge quality on energetic balance of intertidal organisms, where energy can be differentially allocated towards key life processes such as protection/repair or growth. Energy trade-offs need to be considered in research concerning animals inhabiting stressful habitats.

The Manila clam is emerging as a relevant species for the Portuguese market. The present work was conducted in the Tagus estuary to evaluate 1) the metals and As content in the sediments of the Tagus estuary, especially on those areas subjected to Manila clam harvesting 2) the metals and As content in clams, and the risk associated with their consumption 3) the physiological and biochemical responses of the clam to metals and As contamination, and its possible role as a pollution bioindicator in the estuarine environment. The most contaminated sediments were identified nearby industrial areas, nevertheless clams collected in low contaminated areas showed high metals and As concentrations. The condition index, glycogen content, membrane oxidative damage, biotransformation enzymes and metallothioneins showed consistent responses to metals and As content in clams. Results emphasize the need for the development of a management plan for the species exploitation in the Tagus estuary.

اظهر المزيد [+] اقل [-]Now, you see me: High concentrations of floating plastic debris in the coastal waters of the Balearic Islands (Spain) النص الكامل

Ruiz-Orejón, Luis F. | Sardá, Rafael | Ramis-Pujol, Juan
Coastal ecosystems are under significant human pressure, partly due to the proximity of pollution sources. In this study, a total of 20 samples were taken in summer around the coastal waters of the Balearic Islands (Spain) using a manta trawl net to examine the concentrations of floating plastic debris through the NIXE III project campaign. Although plastic concentrations showed high variability along the coast, the higher particle concentration (max: 4,576,115 items ⋅ km⁻²) and weight (max: 8,102.94 g(DW) ⋅ km⁻²) values were located at the north of the Balearic Promontory. The particle size analysis showed the high prevalence of microplastics (< 5 mm) in these waters, where particles of approximately 0.7 mm and 1 mm² were the most frequent in the range analyzed. The high plastic concentration values in the N-NW coast of Ibiza and Mallorca in sparsely populated locations suggest that the plastic particle distribution was mostly conditioned by the hydrodynamic surface conditions.
اظهر المزيد [+] اقل [-]Marine protected areas and spatial fetishism: A viewpoint on destructive fishing in coastal Tanzania النص الكامل
2018
Raycraft, Justin
This paper focuses on destructive fishing practices in coastal Tanzania. I argue that the dominant conservation narrative that increased capacity and ‘political will’ for enforcement of marine protected areas (MPAs) reflects a form of spatial fetishization, in that it overemphasizes the influence of space over social behaviour. I contend that Tanzanian MPAs offer bandage solutions to underlying structural problems that are contingent upon the inconsistent availability of social and financial resources for monitoring activities. I suggest that a paradigm shift is necessary, involving the de-territorialization of marine conservation discourse in Tanzania, and a movement towards addressing the underlying social, political and economic conditions that influence marine resource use.

Marine litter has been considered a potential transport vector of non-indigenous species. In this study developed in Tjärnö (Sweden), at the entry of the Baltic Sea, the communities inhabiting coastal litter and natural substrates (N = 5448 macroorganisms) were monitored from eight sites of different ecological conditions. The results showed that litter can support high densities of marine organisms and represent a new habitat in the studied coast. The taxonomic profile of the communities supported by marine litter and hard natural substrate were significantly different. Moreover, opposite to the expectations of reduced diversity in artificial structures, more diverse communities were found on litter. Non-indigenous species were attached mainly to non-plastic artificial materials. From these results it can be concluded that marine litter can significantly alter the biotic composition of coastal ecosystem, representing a shelter for invasive species and diverse natives.
اظهر المزيد [+] اقل [-]The distribution and seasonal variations of sedimentary organic matter in the East China Sea shelf النص الكامل

Zhou, Fengxia | Gao, Xuelu | Yuan, Huamao | Song, Jinming | Chen, Fajin
We sampled the surface sediments of the East China Sea shelf (ECSS) in spring and autumn, 2014, and analyzed the biogenic element concentrations and stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopic compositions to study the distribution and seasonal variations of sedimentary organic matter (OM). The average concentrations of TOC, TN and OP in autumn decreased obviously compared with those in spring. The increase of δ15N values in autumn indicated the priority utilization of 14N by bacterial decomposition activity. The values of δ13C were used to trace organic matter sources. The estimated percentages for terrestrial OM were in the range of 0–34.6%. They generally decreased seaward in nearshore areas, indicating the decrease of terrigenous influence. There was an obvious tongue-shaped region with relatively low percentages of terrestrial OM (<12%) in the northern part of the ECSS, which may be a reflection of the intrusion pathway of the outer seawater.
