Lipids are the main energy support during gametogenesis. Digestive gland is the key organ of aquatic animal metabolism for storing nutrition and supplying energy. It participates in a variety of life activities (such as growth, digestion, immunity, and reproduction). Nutrients stored in digestive glands, especially lipids, provide energy for reproductive behaviors such as gametogenesis and ovulation. A large number of studies have confirmed the accumulation of lipids from digestive gland to gonad during gametogenesis. At present, the research on the interference mechanism of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on lipid metabolism of aquatic animals and the adaptive response of aquatic animals to POPs stress focus on biochemical levels or a few genes. The potential molecular mechanism of lipid metabolism interference needs to be further studied. In addition, as an important stage of aquatic animals, the reproductive period is a vigorous period of lipid metabolism. However, at present, there is no report on the molecular mechanism of POPs interfering with the lipid metabolism of the digestive gland in the reproductive process of aquatic animals. In this study, female scallop C. farreri was cultured in natural seawater and exposed to 4 μg/L B[a]P in seawater. Transcriptome analysis of digestive glands at multiple stages (proliferative stage, growth stage, mature stage and spawn stage) was performed, and iPath pathway analysis was used to analyze lipid metabolism pathways and differential genes. The interference mechanism of lipid metabolism in bivalves during reproductive period was revealed. This study will provide valuable genomic information on the role of digestive glands in lipid metabolism and reproduction of C. farreri, and will contribute to further functional genomics of bivalves and other closely related species.

Worship activities like burning joss paper during the Chinese Hanyi festival is a common, traditional custom in northwest China. However, the pollutants of e.g., soot particles, released from joss paper burning and the corresponding impacts on urban air quality were poorly investigated, which can be a particular concern since these activities are conducted in an uncontrolled manner. In this study, a long time-of-flight (LToF) soot particle aerosol mass spectrometry (SP-AMS) was deployed to characterize the refractory black carbon (rBC) emitted from the joss paper burning, as well as crop residue, coal combustion, and traffic during the Hanyi Festival in mid-November 2020 in the northwestern city of Xi'an in China. Large difference (from <5% to >100%) in the fragmentation patterns (Cₙ⁺) for the measured rBC from different source emissions were found when compared to the reference Regal Black. Using the receptor model of positive matrix factorization (PMF) with the multilinear engine (ME-2) algorithm, the obtained rBC mass spectra were used as the anchoring profiles to evaluate the emission strengths of different source types to the atmospheric rBC. Our results show that the burning of joss paper accounted for up to 42% of the atmospheric rBC mass, higher than traffic (14–17%), crop residue (10–17%), coal (18–20%) during the Hanyi festival in northwest China. Moreover, we show that the overall air quality can be worsened due to the practice of uncontrolled burning of joss paper during the festival, which is not just confined to the people who do the burning. Although worship activities occur mainly during festival periods, the pollution events contributed by joss paper burning may pose an acute exposure risk for public health. This is particularly important since burning joss paper during worship activities is common in China and most Asian countries with similar traditions.

Exposure to toxic metals from nonferrous metal(loid) smelter soils can pose serious threats to the surrounding ecosystems, crop production, and human health. Bioremediation using microorganisms is a promising strategy for treating metal(loid)-contaminated soils. Here, a native microbial consortium with sulfate-reducing function (SRB1) enriched from smelter soils can tolerate exposures to mixtures of heavy metal(loid)s (e.g., As and Pb) or various organic flotation reagents (e.g., ethylthionocarbamate). The addition of Fe²⁺ greatly increased As³⁺ immobilization compared to treatment without Fe²⁺, with the immobilization efficiencies of 81.0% and 58.9%, respectively. Scanning electronic microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that the As³⁺ immobilizing activity was related to the formation of arsenic sulfides (AsS, As₄S₄, and As₂S₃) and sorption/co-precipitation of pyrite (FeS₂). High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing of SRB1 suggests that members of Clostridium, Desulfosporosinus, and Desulfovibrio genera play an important role in maintaining and stabilizing As³⁺ immobilization activity. Metal(loid)s immobilizing activity of SRB1 was not observed at high and toxic total exposure concentrations (220–1181 mg As/kg or 63–222 mg Pb/kg). However, at lower concentrations, SRB1 treatment decreased bioavailable fractions of As (9.0%) and Pb (28.6%) compared to without treatment. Results indicate that enriched native SRB1 consortia exhibited metal(loid) transformation capacities under non-toxic concentrations of metal(loid)s for future bioremediation strategies to decrease mixed metal(loid)s exposure from smelter polluted soils.

2022
O'Connor, James | Mickan, Bede S. | Siddique, Kadambot H.M. | Rinklebe, Jörg | Kirkham, M.B. | Bolan, Nanthi S.
Currently, 1.3 billion tonnes of food are thrown away each year, most of which are incinerated or landfilled causing large environmental, social, and economic issues. Therefore, the utilisation of food waste as biofertilisers, such as composts and digestates, is a solution to reduce the problems created by incineration and landfilling whilst simultaneously amending soils. The improper disposal of food wastes and bulking materials can contribute to high levels of contaminants within the end-product. Moreover, the food waste and bulking materials, themselves, may contain trace amounts of contaminants. These contaminants tend to have long half-lives, are easily mobile within soil and plants, can accumulate within the food supply chain, and have moderate to high levels of toxicity. This review aims to examine the current and emerging contaminants of high concern that impact the quality of food-waste fertilisers. The paper presents the volume of current and emerging contaminants of plastics, other physical (particulate) contaminants, heavy metals, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and pathogens within food-waste composts and digestates. Due to the large extent of organic chemical contaminants and the unknown level of toxicity and persistence, the risk assessment of organic chemical contaminants in the food-supply chain remains largely unknown. This study has presented available data from literature of various contaminants found in food waste, and composts and digestates derived from food waste, and evaluated the data with current regulations globally. Overall, to reduce contaminants in composts and digestates, more studies are required on the implementation of proper disposal separation, effective composting and digestion practices, increased screening of physical contaminants, development of compostable plastics, and increased regulatory policies on emerging, problematic contaminants. Moreover, examination of emerging contaminants in food-waste composts and digestates is needed to ensure food security and reduce future human-health risks.

The coastal megacity Shanghai is located in the center of the Yangtze River Delta, a dominant flame retardants (FRs) production region in China, especially for organophosphate esters (OPEs). This prompted us to investigate occurrence and seasonal changes of atmospheric OPEs in Shanghai, as well as to evaluate their sources, environmental behavior and fate as a case study for global coastal regions. Atmospheric gas and particle phase OPEs were weekly collected at two coastal sites - the emerging town Lingang New Area (LGNA), and the chemical-industry zone Jinshan Area (JSA) from July 2016–June 2017. Total atmospheric concentrations of the observed OPEs were significantly higher in JSA (median of 1800 pg m⁻³) than LGNA (median of 580 pg m⁻³). Tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the most abundant compound, and the proportion of three chlorinated OPEs were higher in the particle phase (55%) than in the gas phase (39%). The year-round median contribution of particle phase OPEs was 33%, which changed strongly with seasons, accounting for 10% in summer in contrast to 62% in winter. Gas and particle phase OPEs in JSA exhibited significant correlations with inverse of temperature, respectively, indicating the importance of local/secondary volatilization sources. The estimated fluxes of gaseous absorption were almost 2 orders of magnitude higher than those of particle phase deposition, which could act as sources of organic phosphorus to coastal and open ocean waters.

Soil contamination with multiple heavy metals poses threats to human health and ecosystem functioning. Using the Nemerow pollution index, which considers the effects of multiple heavy metals, we compared the diversity and composition of bacteria, fungi and protists and their potential interactions in response to a multi-metal contamination gradient. Multi-metal contamination significantly altered the community composition of bacteria, fungi and protists, and the degree of alteration increased with increasing severity of contamination. The alpha-diversity of bacteria, fungi and protists significantly decreased with increasing contamination level. The dominant generalists, found in all soil samples, were Gammaproteobacteria, Chloroflexi and Bacillus sp, whereas the dominant specialists were Anaerolineaceae, Entoloma sp. and Sandonidae_X sp. The relative abundances of generalists were positively correlated, whereas those of specialists were negatively correlated, with the Nemerow pollution index. In addition, the complexity of the microbial co-occurrence network increased with increasing contamination level. Generalists, rather than specialists, were the keystones in the microbial co-occurrence network and played a crucial role in adaptation to multi-metal contamination through enhanced potential interactions within the entire microbiome. Our results provide insights into the ecological effects of multi-metal contamination on the soil microbiome and will help to develop bio-remediation technologies for contaminated soils.

Aksangür, İpek | Eren, Beytullah | Erden, Caner
Studies have confirmed that PM₁₀, defined as respirable particles with diameters of 10 μm and smaller, has adverse effects on human health and the environment. Various estimation methods are employed to determine the PM₁₀ concentration using historical data on controlling PM₁₀ air pollution, early warning, and protecting public health and the environment. The present study analyses different Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models that can predict hourly PM₁₀ concentration. In parallel, the study also investigates the effectiveness of the data preprocessing and feature selection (DPFS) process on the prediction accuracy of the LSTM models. For this purpose, three different LSTM models, namely Vanilla, Bi-Directional, and Stacked, were developed. Then, a comprehensive data preprocessing stage is used to eliminate missing and erroneous data and outliers from real-world raw data, and a feature selection process is applied to extract unnecessary features. The LSTM models consider three air quality parameters, including SO₂, O₃, and CO, and three meteorological factors, including relative humidity, wind direction, and wind speed. The prediction performances of the LSTM models are compared using the RMSE, MAE and R² performance index according to whether DPFS is used in the models or not. As a result, when the DPFS process was applied, the proposed LSTM models achieved high prediction performance and can be used to predict hourly PM₁₀ concentrations. Overall, the DPFS process significantly enhanced the developed LSTM models’ prediction performance. Furthermore, the proposed model might be a useful tool for city administrators to make decisions and improve air quality management efforts.

Zero valent iron-loaded biochar (Fe⁰-BC) has shown promise for the removal of various organic pollutants, but is restricted by reduced specific surface area, low utilization efficiency and limited production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, iron carbide-loaded activated biochar (Fe₃C-AB) with a high surface area was synthesized through the pyrolysis of H₃PO₄ activated biochar with Fe(NO₃)₃, tested for removing bisphenol A (BPA) and elucidated the adsorption and degradation mechanisms. As a result, H₃PO₄ activated biochar was beneficial for the transformation of Fe⁰ to Fe₃C. Fe₃C-AB exhibited a significantly higher removal rate and removal capacity for BPA than that of Fe⁰-BC within a wide pH range of 5.0–11.0, and its performance was maintained even under extremely high salinity and different water sources. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectra and density functional theory calculations confirmed that hydrogen bonds were formed between the COOH groups and BPA. ¹O₂ was the major reactive species, constituting 37.0% of the removal efficiency in the degradation of BPA by Fe₃C-AB. Density functional reactivity theory showed that degradation pathway 2 of BPA was preferentially attacked by ROS. Thus, Fe₃C-AB with low cost and excellent recycling performance could be an alternative candidate for the efficient removal of contaminants.

2022
Nduka, Ifeanyichukwu C. | Huang, Tao | Li, Zhiyuan | Yang, Yuanjian | Yim, Steve H.L.
Air pollution and extreme heat have been responsible for more than a million deaths in China every year, especially in densely urbanized regions. While previous studies intensively evaluated air pollution episodes and extreme heat events, a limited number of studies comprehensively assessed atmospheric hot-and-polluted-episodes (HPE) – an episode with simultaneously high levels of air pollution and temperature – which have potential adverse synergic impacts on human health. This study focused on the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of China due to its high temperature in summer and poor air quality throughout a year. We employed geostatistical downscaling to model meteorology at a spatial resolution of 1 km, and applied a machine learning algorithm (XGBoost) to estimate a high-resolution (1 km) daily concentration of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM₂.₅) and ozone (O₃) for June to October over 20 years (2000–2019). Our results indicate an increasing trend (∼50%) in the frequency of HPE occurrence in the first decade (2000–2010). Conversely, the annual frequency of HPE occurrence reduced (16.7%), but its intensity increased during the second decade (2010–2019). The northern cities in the PRD region had higher levels of PM₂.₅ and O₃ than their southern counterparts. During HPEs, regional daily PM₂.₅ exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) and Chinese guideline levels by 75% and 25%, respectively, while the O₃ exceeded the WHO O₃ standard by up to 69%. Overall, 567,063 (95% confidence interval (CI): 510,357–623,770) and 52,231 (95%CI: 26,116–78,346) excessive deaths were respectively attributable to exposure to PM₂.₅ and O₃ in the PRD region. Our findings imply the necessity and urgency to formulate co-benefit policies to mitigate the region's air pollution and heat problems.

2022
Zhang, Ling | Yan, Changzhou | Qi, Ran | Yang, Fan
The removal of antibiotics in subsurface flow constructed wetlands is performed through various removal mechanisms, such as adsorption, hydrolysis, microbial degradation and plant uptake. However, the contribution rates of the removal mechanisms in constructed wetlands are still not well studied. This study conducted a series of experiments and used multivariate statistical analysis to determine contribution rates for substrate adsorption, hydrolysis, and microbial degradation. Multiple stepwise regression analysis indicated that specific surface area and salt content were the main factors influencing sulfonamide adsorption, while temperature and pH were the main factors influencing sulfonamide hydrolysis. Variance partitioning analysis showed that the influence of physical-chemical factors was greater than that of nutrients on the microbial community. Partial least squares path analysis showed that the path coefficients of microbial degradation, adsorption and hydrolysis for sulfonamides removal in vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands were 0.6339, 0.3608 and 0.0351, respectively, while the corresponding path coefficient were 0.5658, 0.4707 and 0.1079 in horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands, respectively. This means that microbial degradation contributes the most to the removal of sulfonamides in subsurface flow constructed wetlands. Enhanced microbial degradation may be a powerful measure to improve the removal of sulfonamides. These results will be helpful for understanding the removal mechanism of antibiotics and will provide a definite direction for pertinently improving sulfonamide removal efficiency in constructed wetlands.
