Characterization and flux of marine oil snow settling toward the seafloor in the northern Gulf of Mexico during the Deepwater Horizon incident: Evidence for input from surface oil and impact on shallow shelf sediments النص الكامل
2018
Stout, Scott A. | German, Christopher R.
Sediment trap samples from the shelf edge area (400-450m water depth), 58km northeast of the failed Macondo well, were collected before, during and after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Detailed chemical analyses of particulates revealed that fluxes of spill-derived TPH (2356μg/m2/day), total PAH (5.4μg/m2/day), and hopane (0.89μg/m2/day) settling to the seafloor directly beneath the surface-plume were 19- to 44-times higher during the active spill than pre- and post-spill background values. The oil was variably biodegraded, evaporated and photo-oxidized indicating that it derived from the sinking of surface oil. The hopane-based oil flux that we calculate (10bbl/km2) indicates that at least 76,000bbl of Macondo oil that reached the ocean surface subsequently sank over an area of approximately 7600km2. We explore how this flux of sunken surface oil contributed to the total volume of oil deposited on the seafloor following the Deepwater Horizon incident.

2018
Andrzejczyk, Nicolette | Sakamoto, Ken | Armstrong, Jeff | Schlenk, Daniel
Wastewater treatment plant effluent introduces a mixture of pollutants into marine environments; however, the impacts of chronic sublethal exposures on populations are often unclear. Presence of estrogenic agents in sediments and uptake of these compounds by demersal flatfishes has been reported at the Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) wastewater outfall. Furthermore, estrogenic activity has been identified in male flatfish in the area, potentially contributing to observed population declines in the OCSD region. Rising ocean temperatures may further contribute to flatfish declines as relationships between temperature and abundance have been reported in the Southern California Bight. To investigate declines, sex ratios, condition factor, organ health indices, hormones, and vitellogenin were quantified in flatfish collected at OCSD outfall and reference sites. Additionally, historical temperature data was examined for trends with population abundances. Rather than being linked to estrogenic activity, results indicated that population declines were more correlated to increases in ocean temperature.

This work is the first study on the spatial and temporal distribution of metals in zooplankton collected along the Persian Gulf. The rank order distribution of metals in terms of their overall average concentration in the zooplankton was observed to be Fe > Zn > Cu > Cd > Ni > Cr > Pb > Co > V. No clear pattern and no statistical differences were detected among the areas and the sampling stations. The highest concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Pb were observed in summer while the highest concentration levels of Fe and Ni were observed in winter. The highest mean zooplankton metal concentration level was found to be Fe with 10.42 μg/g (in winter) and the lowest levels were for V (in spring and summer) and Co (in winter), both of which had a level of 0.01 μg/g. The results can be used to establish base-line data for the trace metal content of zooplankton in the northern region of the Persian Gulf.

2018
Bauer-Civiello, Anne | Loder, Jennifer | Hamann, Mark
The prevalence of marine debris in global oceans is negatively impacting the marine environment. In Australia, marine debris has been an increasing concern for sensitive marine environments, such as coral reefs. Citizen science can contribute data to explore patterns of subtidal marine debris loads. This study uses data from Reef Check Australia to describe patterns of debris abundance on reef tourism sites in two Queensland regions, the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and Southeast Queensland (SEQ). Debris was categorized into three groups, fishing line, fishing net, and general rubbish. Overall, debris abundance across reefs was relatively low (average 0.5–3.3 items per survey (400 m2)), but not absent on remote reefs surveyed in the GBR region. Highest debris loads were recorded in SEQ near cities and high use areas. These results indicate the presence of marine debris on remote and urban reefs, and the applicability of using citizen science to monitor debris abundance.

Sagawa, Nao | Kawaai, Keiyu | Hinata, Hirofumi
Microplastics have adverse effects on marine life. This study examined the abundance and size of microplastics as well as their polymer types in the surface water and the bottom and beach sediments of Hiroshima Bay. The fragmentation process and sinking factors of foamed polystyrene (FPS) microplastics were also examined. Serious FPS pollution spread out not only in the beach sediments but also in the bottom sediments. The average size of FPS particles in the bottom sediments was significantly smaller than that of beached FPS particles. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images suggest that large amounts of microsized or nanosized FPS fragments are likely to be generated from the margins of beached FPS microplastics. X-ray computed tomography images show that FPS microplastics from the bottom sediments had tunnel-like structures inside the particle. Based on these images, FPS microplastics in the bottom sediments were susceptible to biofouling and soil deposition.

The direct evidences for the ingestion of microplastics by cetaceans, especially the cetaceans in Asian marine areas are limited. In this study, residue of microplastics in the intestinal tracts of East Asian finless porpoises (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis sunameri) was investigated. Microplastics were detected in all specimens, with mean abundance of 19.1 ± 7.2 items/individual. With respect to microplastics properties, fibers, blue items, and polypropylene were predominant in shapes, colors, and plastic materials, respectively. Trophic transfer and unintentional ingestion might be the potential pathways for microplastics ingested by finless porpoise. The specific intestinal structure might account for the predominance of fibers and the accumulation of microplastics at the beginning portion of intestines. This study indicates that cetaceans in Chinese marine areas also suffer from microplastics pollution. Further studies on the fate and ecological effects of microplastics should be conducted to reveal their potential risks to cetaceans.

Baquiran, Jake Ivan P. | Conaco, Cecilia
Sponges harbor a great diversity of symbiotic microorganisms. However, environmental stresses can affect this partnership and influence the health and abundance of the host sponges. In Bolinao, Pangasinan, Philippines, chronic input of organic materials from mariculture activities contributes to a eutrophic coastal environment. To understand how these conditions might affect sponge-microbial partnerships, transplantation experiments were conducted with the marine sponge Gelliodes obtusa. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA revealed that the associated microbial community of the sponges did not exhibit significant shifts after six weeks of transplantation at a eutrophic fish farm site compared to sponges grown at a coral reef or a seagrass area. However, sponges at the fish farm revealed higher abundance of the amoA gene, suggesting that microbiome members are responsive to increased ammonium levels at the site. The stable association between G. obtusa and its microbiome indicates that the sponge holobiont can withstand eutrophication pressure from mariculture.

Sühring, Roxana | Smith, Andy | Emerson, Heather | Doran, Denise | Mellor, Phil | Kirby, Mark F. | Christie, Bernard
The UK Marine Management Organisation (MMO) tasked the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) with reviewing the current UK dispersant efficacy testing procedures. The aim was to identify possibilities to increase standardisation, improve health and safety performance and explore harmonisation possibilities with international dispersant efficacy testing procedures. The US EPA ‘Baffled Flask Test’ (BFT) was adopted, implemented and validated as a new standard method in the UK. The outputs from this study suggest that dispersant efficacy results from the adopted BFT test and the currently used protocol are in a similar range and results presented by the US EPA.As a result, the transition to the adopted BFT test will require minimal changes in the assessment of the results or reporting and increase harmonisation between tests used in the UK and North America.
اظهر المزيد [+] اقل [-]Use of the sea hare (Aplysia fasciata) in marine pollution biomonitoring of harbors and bays النص الكامل

Dirrigl, Frank J. | Badaoui, Zachariah | Támez, Carlos | Vitek, Christopher J. | Parsons, Jason G.
Our study evaluated heavy metal concentrations in soft tissues of sea hare, Aplysia fasciata, from the Lower Laguna Madre, Texas. Heavy metals in tissues followed Se>As>Pb>Cd. Concentrations ranged As (BDL-28.08), Cd (BDL-5.50), Pb (BDL-12.85) and Se (4.25–93.43ppm). Median As, Cd, Pb, and Se tissue levels exceeded exposure levels. Significant relationships occurred in metal-metal (AsCd, AsPb, CdPb, CdSe, and PbSe), metal-tissue (significant Se uptake by inhalant and exhalant siphons and As in the hepatopancreas), and metal-metal within tissue (AsPb in the hepatopancreas and CdPb in the digestive cecum) analyses (p<0.05). Bioaccumulation factors (BAF) suggested the inhalant siphon, hepatopancreas, and digestive cecum function as macroconcentrators of Cd, hepatopancreas and digestive cecum as macroconcentrators of Pb, and all tissues were deconcentrators for As and Se. As a bioaccumulator of heavy metals, Aplysia was evaluated as a bioindicator of marine pollution in harbors and bays.

Ismail, Nur Afifah Hanun | Wee, Sze Yee | Ahmad Zaharin Aris,
Endocrine disrupting compound (EDC) contamination in food is a global concern. Concerning potential environmental and human health exposed to EDCs via food intake, an experiment was conducted on the selected EDCs concentration in the mariculture fish, Trachinotus blochii (golden pomfret), Lutjanus campechanus (snapper), and Lates calcarifer (sea bass) at Pulau Kukup, Johor. Mariculture activity at Pulau Kukup involves active export of fishes to Singapore and Indonesia. The recovery of BPA (bisphenol A), 4OP (4-octylphenol), and 4NP (4-nonylphenol) were 61.54%–93.00%, 16.79%–17.13%, and 61.24%–71.49%, respectively. Relatively high concentration of BPA was recorded in T. blochii (0.322ng/g), followed by L. calcarifer (0.124ng/g) and L. campechanus (0.023ng/g). Furthermore, 4OP and 4NP were detected only in T. blochii at concentrations of 0.084ng/g and 0.078ng/g, respectively. The results of the present study provide insights on monitoring and managing mariculture activity in relation to environmental protection and food safety.
