Macondo oil in northern Gulf of Mexico waters – Part 2: Dispersant-accelerated PAH dissolution in the Deepwater Horizon plume النص الكامل
2018
Driskell, William B. | Payne, James R.
During the Deepwater Horizon blowout, unprecedented volumes of dispersant were applied both on the surface and at depth. Application at depth was intended to disperse the oil into smaller microdroplets that would increase biodegradation and also reduce the volumes buoyantly rising to the surface, thereby reducing surface exposures, recovery efforts, and potential stranding. In forensically examining 5300 offshore water samples for the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) effort, profiles of deep-plume oil droplets (from filtered water samples) were compared with those also containing dispersant indicators to reveal a previously hypothesized but undocumented, accelerated dissolution of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in the plume samples. We interpret these data in a fate-and-transport context and conclude that dispersant applications were functionally effective at depth.

Following the discovery of potential chronic perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination of Tilligerry Creek, Port Stephens (New South Wales Australia), sampling was undertaken to confirm the presence, extent and levels of contamination in commercial oyster crops of Sydney Rock Oyster (Saccostrea glomerata) and Pacific Oyster (Crassostrea gigas) grown within the estuary. Among a range of PFAS tested, only perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was detected. Concentrations of PFOS in oyster tissues for S. glomerata ranged from 1.6μgkg⁻¹ ww (wet weight) to below the limit of reporting of 0.3μgkg⁻¹ ww, with concentrations generally decreasing toward the lower reaches of the estuary. The sample of C. gigas tested had a PFOS concentration of 0.71μgkg⁻¹ ww that was consistent with concentrations observed in nearby S. glomerata. For harvest size (50–60g) S. glomerata, both holding contaminated oysters in a depuration system, and relocation to a non-contaminated area, saw significant reductions in the tissue PFOS concentrations. For oysters held in a depuration system, PFOS depurated at a rate of 0.008h⁻¹ (0.004–0.019h⁻¹; 90% CI), which corresponded with a depuration half-life of 87h (35–155h; 90%). A more conservative model (fitted to data that assumed concentrations<LOR were equal 0.5·LOR) predicted a depuration half-life of 131h. PFOS concentrations had fallen to below detectable limits within 162h. Similar decreases were observed in relocated oysters.

Despite over 21,000ha of mangrove forests being removed per year in Brazil, ecological changes following mangrove deforestation have been overlooked. Here we evaluated changes in benthic macrofaunal assemblages and food-webs at a mangrove removal and natural sites in a tropical estuary in Eastern Brazil. The impacted site had coarser sediment particle sizes suggesting significant changes in sedimentation processes after forest clearing. Spatial differences in macrofaunal abundance, biomass and diversity were not directly associated with the removal of mangrove forests, supporting recolonization of impacted areas by estuarine fauna. However, benthic assemblage composition, infaunal δ13C signatures and food-web diversity markedly differed at the impacted site being strongly related to sedimentary changes. The loss of infaunal trophic diversity that followed mangrove removal suggests that large-scale forest clearing may impact estuarine food webs, with potential consequences to nearby coastal ecosystems given the high clearing rate of mangrove forests in Brazil.

Microplastics are recognized as a growing threat for the marine environment that may even affect areas generally considered pristine. In this work we surveyed the microplastic contamination in the Faafu Atoll (Maldives, Indian Ocean) across twelve sampling station, located either inside or outside the reef rim. Sediments and seawater samples were collected. Despite the remoteness of the atoll, the scarce local population and low touristic annual afflux, the detected average abundance were 0.32 ± 0.15 particles/m3 in the surface water and 22.8 ± 10.5 particles/m2 in the beach sediments. Polymers identified through Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy were mostly polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinylchloride, polyethyleneterephtalate, and polyamide. Elastomeric residues and charred microparticles were also found. In particular, the charred microparticles were prevalently located nearby the inhabited island and they might be considered a peculiarity of the area, related to local practice of burning plastic waste at the shoreline.

Jones, M.R.L. | Ross, P.M.
Levels of imposex in the muricid dogwhelk Haustrum scobina (Quoy & Gaimard, 1833) were assessed in two major New Zealand ports between 2015 and 2017, 12+years after the banning of TBT-based antifouling paints. In the 1990s imposex was common adjacent to port facilities and marinas in Waitemata and Tauranga Harbours, and several populations were found to be largely sterile and in decline. By 2015–17 imposex was largely absent from Tauranga Harbour and considerably reduced in Waitemata Harbour. In Waitemata Harbour imposex remained in areas adjacent to hull cleaning facilities and marinas, but at low levels and frequencies. These data highlight the success of the 2003 banning of TBT-based antifouling paints in reducing levels of imposex in New Zealand ports. However, these reductions in antifouling chemicals and subsequent population recoveries may have had unforseen effects within these harbours including changes in community structure and the arrival of non-indigenous species.

Marine renewable energy development raised concerns over the impact of underwater noise. Here we assess the acoustic impacts of an operating tidal current turbine (Paimpol-Bréhat site, France) on marine fauna. Its source level (SL) has been measured in situ using 19 drifting transects at distances between 100 m to 2400 m from the turbine. SL ranged from 118 to 152 dB re1 μPa@1 m in third-octave bands at frequencies between 40 and 8192 Hz. It is comparable to the SL of a 19 m boat travelling at 10kt speed. This SL was used to estimate the impact of this noise type based on acoustic propagation simulations. The acoustic footprint of the device corresponds to a 1.5 km radius disk. Our results show that within this area of greatest potential impact, physiological injury of the hearing apparatus of invertebrates, fishes and marine mammals is improbable. Behavioral disturbance may occur up to 1 km around the device for harbor porpoises only. This is of little concern for a single turbine. However, greater concern on turbine noise impact, particularly on behavioral reactions has to be granted for a farm with up to 100 turbine. The lack of consolidated knowledge on behavioral disturbances identifies the needs for specific research programs.

2018
The response units of protozoan communities, based on a community-weighted mean (CWM) dataset across trait-taxon space, were investigated in order to determine their utility as bioindicators of marine water quality. From a total of 17 functional categories of seven biological traits, three functional response units (FRUs) were identified at correlation levels of >0.75. FRUs 1 and 3 generally dominated the communities in more polluted areas during warm seasons, while FRU2 appeared to prefer less polluted waters and dominated the communities in spring and winter. Correlation analysis demonstrated that the CWM values of FRUs 1 and 3 were significantly positively correlated to the concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD), whereas those of FRU2 were negatively correlated to COD. Across taxon-function space, 16 species were identified as potential bioindicators of water quality. These results suggest that redundancy analysis across trait-taxon space is a useful tool for identifying indicators of environmental quality.

2018
This baseline assessment reports on the occurrence, distribution, and sources of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in tropical coastal sediments of anthropogenically impacted Klang River estuary, Malaysia. Bisphenol A was the highest concentration detected at 16.84 ng g−1 dry weight, followed by diclofenac (13.88 ng g−1 dry weight) and E1 (12.47 ng g−1 dry weight). Five compounds, namely, amoxicillin, progesterone, diazinon, bisphenol A, and E1, were found in all sampling stations assessed, and other compounds such as primidone, diclofenac, testosterone, E2, and EE2 were ubiquitously present in sediment samples, with percentage of detection range from 89.04% to 98.38%. Organic carbon content and pH were the important factors controlling the fate of targeted compounds in the tropical estuarine sediment. On the basis of the literature from other studies, the sources of EOCs are thought to be from wastewater treatment plants, domestic/medical waste discharge, livestock activities, industrial waste discharge, and agricultural activities.
اظهر المزيد [+] اقل [-]The aquatic hazard of hydrocarbon liquids and gases and the modulating role of pressure on dissolved gas and oil toxicity النص الكامل
2018
Paquin, Paul R. | McGrath, Joy | Fanelli, Christopher J. | Di Toro, Dominic M.
Hydrostatic pressure enhances gas solubility and potentially alters toxicity and risks of oil and gas releases to deep-sea organisms. This study has two primary objectives. First, the aquatic hazard of dissolved hydrocarbon gases is characterized using results of previously published laboratory and field studies and modeling. The target lipid model (TLM) is used to predict effects at ambient pressure, and results are compared to effect concentrations derived from extrapolation of liquid alkane hazard data. Second, existing literature data are used to quantify and predict pressure effects on toxicity using an extension of the TLM framework. Results indicate elevated pressure mitigates narcosis, particularly for sensitive species. A simple adjustment is proposed to allow TLM-based estimates of acute effect and TLM-derived HC5 values (concentrations intended to provide 95% species protection) for oil or gas constituents to be calculated at depth. Future applications, and opportunities and challenges for providing validation, are discussed.

2018
Conventional methods for determination of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in sediments usually require large sample sizes (grams) and solvent volumes (at least 100 mL) through the employment of Soxhlet extraction, which is both time (hours) and energy consuming, among other disadvantages. We developed a new analytical protocol for the determination of PACs in sediments using microextraction, which requires small sample masses (25 mg), 500 μL of acetonitrile-dichloromethane mix and sonication for 23 min, followed by GC–MS analysis. The method was validated using the certified reference material SRM 1941b – NIST organic marine sediment, as well as internal deuterated standards. Seventeen PAHs, seven nitro-PAHs and one quinone were detected and quantified. The mean concentrations were 90.4 ng g−1 for PAHs, 179.2 ng g−1 for nitro-PAHs and 822.5 ng g−1 for quinones. The proposed method showed good sensitivity, linearity, precision and accuracy for the determination of PAC in sediments samples.
