Transformation products (TPs) of micropollutants contaminating our water resources have become an emerging issue due to the potential threats they pose to environmental and human health. This study investigated the transformation chemistry, toxicity, physicochemical properties and environmental behavior resulting from photocatalytic transformation of organic UV filters as model micropollutants. 3-Benzylidene camphor (3-BC), 4-hydroxybenzophenone (4-HB) and octocrylene (OC) were effectively degraded by UV-A/TiO₂ treatment, with TPs identified and characterized with high resolution mass spectrometry. Nitrated-TPs were observed to be formed in the presence of nitrite and nitrate for 3-BC and 4-HB, suggesting that the transformation process could be altered by components in the water matrix. Vibrio fischeri bioluminescence inhibition assay revealed an increase in toxicity of TPs derived from photocatalytic treatment, with quantitative structure-activity relationship model (ECOSAR) predicted an enhanced toxicity of individual TPs' after transformation. Assessment of physicochemical properties and environmental behavior suggested that TPs as compared to parent organic UV filters, may represent even greater hazards due to their increased water solubility, persistence and mobility – in addition to retaining the parent organic UV filter's toxicity. The results provide important information relevant to the potential risks for the selected organic UV filters, and their corresponding transformation products.

Plastic materials are increasingly produced worldwide with a total estimated production of >8300 million tonnes to date, of which 60% was discarded. In the environment, plastics fragment into smaller particles, e.g. microplastics (size < 5 mm), and further weathering leads to the formation of functionally different contaminants – nanoplastics (size <1 μm). Nanoplastics are believed to have entirely different physical (e.g. transport), chemical (e.g. functional groups at the surface) and biological (passing the cell membrane, toxicity) properties compared to the micro- and macroplastics, yet, their measurement in the environmental samples is seldom available. Here, we present measurements of nanoplastics mass concentration and calculated the deposition at the pristine high-altitude Alpine Sonnblick observatory (3106 MASL), during the 1.5 month campaigh in late winter 2017. The average nanoplastics concentration was 46.5 ng/mL of melted surface snow. The main polymer types of nanoplastics observed for this site were polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). We measured significantly higher concentrations in the dry sampling periods for PET (p < 0.002) but not for PP, which indicates that dry deposition may be the preferential pathway for PET leading to a gradual accumulation on the snow surfaces during dry periods. Air transport modelling indicates regional and long-range transport of nanoplastics, originating preferentially from European urban areas. The mean deposition rate was 42 (+32/-25) kg km⁻² year⁻¹. Thus more than 2 × 10¹¹ nanoplastics particles are deposited per square meter of surface snow each week of the observed period, even at this remote location, which raises significant toxicological concerns.

Oxytetracycline (OTC) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic widely used in aquaculture, resulting in contamination of aquatic environments. In a previous study, we observed significant effects of OTC sublethal concentrations in zebrafish, its microbiome and the water bacterial community. Here we assessed the extent to which these effects are reversible after a recovery period. Zebrafish adults were exposed to OTC (10,000 μg/L) via water exposure. Effects were analyzed at 5 days (5 dE) and 2 months (2 mE) of exposure and recovery was assessed at 5 days (5dPE) and 1 month (1mPE) after exposure Impacts were observed in fish energetic reserves and in fish and water microbiomes structure, being significant even at 5 dE. At energetic reserves level, the effect in cellular energy allocation (CEA) was dependent on the exposure time: initially CEA increased while after 2 mE CEA decreased. At microbiome level, diversity was not affected but the richness of the water microbiome significantly decreased at 2 mE.Regarding the post-exposure period, at CEA level, organisms seem to recover. In water and gut microbiomes OTC effects were also attenuated after exposure ceases, indicating a recovery. Even so, the structure of water exposed community remained significantly different towards the control, while richness of this community significantly increased at 1mPE. During exposure the relative abundance of 11 and 16 genera was significantly affected in the gut and water microbiomes, respectively, though these numbers decreased to 4 and 8 genera in the post-exposure period. At functional level during exposure 12 and 13 pathways were predicted to be affected in zebrafish gut and water microbiomes respectively, while post-exposure few pathways remained significantly affected. Hence, our results suggest a recovery of the fish fitness as well as of the water and intestine microbiomes after exposure ceases. Even so, some of the effects caused by OTC remain significant after this recovery period.

Lake sediments are widely used as environmental archives to reconstruct past changes in contaminants deposition, provided that they remain immobile after deposition. Arsenic (As) is a redox-sensitive element that may be redistributed in the sediments during early diagenesis, for instance along with iron and manganese, and thus depth profiles of As might not provide a reliable, unaltered record of past deposition. Here, we use inverse diagenetic modelling to calculate fluxes of As across the sediment-water interface and interpret As sedimentary records in eight lakes along a 80 km transect from the Giant and Con mines, Northwest Territories, Canada. The sediment cores were dated using ²¹⁰Pb methods and analyzed for solid-phase and porewater As, Fe, Mn and organic C concentrations. We reconstructed the history of As deposition by correcting for the varying mobility patterns and calculated contemporary As deposition fluxes. Correction for diagenesis was substantial for three of the eight lakes, suggesting that lakes with lower sedimentation rates, which allows longer residence of As within the reactive zones defined by the model, enhance the influence of diagenesis. Results show that solid phase As peaks coincides with the period of high emissions from past gold ore roasting activities. Results also show that sediments sustained present-day As fluxes to the water column of study lakes within 50 km of the mines, while sediment in study lakes further than 50 km acted as As sinks instead.

Goiter is one of common endocrine diseases, and its etiology has not been fully elucidated. The changes in trace elements' levels have an important impact on the thyroid. We designed a case-control study, which involved 383 goiter cases and 383 matched controls. We measured these elements in the urine of participants by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) and As³⁺-Ce⁴⁺ catalytic spectrophotometry. Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression was used to select the elements into multi-element models, conditional logistic regression models were applied to analyze the association between elements and goiter risk. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model was used to depict elements’ mixtures and evaluate their joint effects. Finally, 7 elements were included in the multi-element model. We found that the concentrations of lithium (Li), strontium (Sr) and barium (Ba) had a negative effect with goiter risk, and lead (Pb) and iodine (I) showed an extreme positive effect. Additionally, compared with the lowest levels, patients with highest quartiles of I and Pb were 6.49 and 1.94 times more likely to have goiter, respectively. On the contrary, in its second and third quartiles, arsenic (As) showed a negative effect (both OR<1). BKMR model showed a certain interaction among Pb, As, Sr and Li on goiter risk. Further large sample studies are needed to confirm these findings in the future.

Investigating the long-term trends of alkyl nitrates (RONO₂) is of great importance for evaluating the variations of photochemical pollution. Mixing ratios of C₁–C₅ RONO₂ were measured in autumn Hong Kong from 2002 to 2016, and the average level of 2-butyl nitrate (2-BuONO₂) always ranked first. The C₁–C₄ RONO₂ all showed increasing trends (p < 0.05), and 2-BuONO₂ had the largest increase rate. The enhancement in C₃ RONO₂ was partially related to elevated propane, and dramatic decreases (p < 0.05) in both nitrogen monoxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) also led to the increased RONO₂ formation. In addition, an increase of hydroxyl (OH) and hydroperoxyl (HO₂) radicals (p < 0.05) suggested enhanced atmospheric oxidative capacity, further resulting in the increases of RONO₂. Source apportionment of C₁–C₄ RONO₂ specified three typical sources of RONO₂, including biomass burning emission, oceanic emission, and secondary formation, of which secondary formation was the largest contributor to ambient RONO₂ levels. Mixing ratios of total RONO₂ from each source were quantified and their temporal variations were investigated. Elevated RONO₂ from secondary formation and biomass burning emission were two likely causes of increased ambient RONO₂. By looking into the spatial distributions of C₁–C₅ RONO₂, regional transport from the Pearl River Delta (PRD) was inferred to build up RONO₂ levels in Hong Kong, especially in the northwestern part. In addition, more serious RONO₂ pollution was found in western PRD region. This study helps build a comprehensive understanding of RONO₂ pollution in Hong Kong and even the entire PRD.

The fate of many chemicals in the environment, particularly contaminants of emerging concern (CEC), have been characterised to a limited extent with a major focus on occurrence in water. This study presents the characterisation, distribution and fate of multiple chemicals including pharmaceuticals, recreational drugs and pesticides in surface water, sediment and fauna representing different food web endpoints in a typical UK estuary (River Colne, Essex, UK). A comparison of contaminant occurrence across different benthic macroinvertebrates was made at three sites and included two amphipods (Gammarus pulex &Crangon crangon), a polychaete worm (Hediste diversicolor) and a gastropod (Peringia ulvae). Overall, multiple contaminants were determined in all compartments and ranged from; <LOQ – 386 ng L⁻¹ in surface water (n = 59 compounds), <LOQ – 146 ng g⁻¹ in sediment (n = 39 compounds) and <LOQ – 91 ng g⁻¹ biota (n = 33 compounds). H. diversicolor and P. ulvae (sediment dwellers) showed greater chemical body burden compared with the two swimming amphipod species sampled (up to 2.5 - 4-fold). The most frequently determined compounds in biota (100%, n = 36 samples) included; cocaine, benzyoylecgonine, carbamazepine, sertraline and diuron. Whilst some of the highest concentrations found were in species H. diverscolor and P. ulvae for psychoactive pharmaceuticals including citalopram (91 ng g⁻¹), sertraline (69 ng g⁻¹), haloperidol (66 ng g⁻¹) and the neonicotinoid, imidacloprid (33 ng g⁻¹) Sediment was noted as an important exposure route for these benthic dwelling organisms and will be critical to monitor in future studies. Overall, the analysis of multiple species and compartments demonstrates the importance of including a range of exposure pathways in order to appropriately assess chemical fates and associated risks in the aquatic environment.

Ground level ozone exerts a strong impact on crop yields, yet how to properly quantify ozone induced yield losses in China remains challenging. To this end, we employed a series of O₃-crop models to estimate ozone induced yield losses in China from 2014 to 2018. The outputs from all models suggested that the total Relative Yield Losses (RYL) of wheat in China from 2014 to 2018 was 18.4%–49.3% and the total RYL of rice was 6.2%–52.9%. Consequently, the total Crop Production Losses (CPL) of wheat and rice could reach 63.9–130.4 and 28.3–35.4 million tons, and the corresponding Total Economic Losses (TEL) could reach 20.5–44.7 and 11.0–15.3 billion dollars, stressing the great importance and urgency of national ozone management. Meanwhile, the estimation outputs highlighted the large variations between different regional O₃-crop models when applying to large scales.Instead of applying one unified O₃-crop models to all regions across China, we also explored the strategy of employing specific O₃-crop models in corresponding (and neighboring) regions to estimate ozone induced yield loss in China. The comparison of two strategies suggested that the mean value from multiple models may still present an inconsistent over/underestimation trend for different crops. Therefore, it is a preferable strategy to employ corresponding O₃-crop models in different regions for estimating the national crop losses caused by ozone pollution. However, the severe lack of regional O₃-crop models in most regions across China makes a robust estimation of national yield losses highly challenging. Given the large variations between O₃-crop interactions across regions, a systematic framework with massive regional O₃-crop models should be properly designed and implemented.

There is currently a significant gap in knowledge about the emission and deposition of mercury (Hg) from coal-fired power plants in Australia. To fill this gap, we propose a novel method that combines several sources of information (stratigraphic data, hydrodynamic modelling and atmospheric modelling), to identify the sources and fates of Hg emitted from coal-fired power plants. The stratigraphic record from Lake Macquarie (Australia) shows that mercury deposition increased up to 7-times since the 1950s, which is when coal-fired power plants were commissioned in the catchment. The stratigraphy also shows a decrease in Hg deposition with power plant retrofits. Using results from multiple models (statistical modelling, hydrodynamic modelling, particle density modelling and atmospheric emissions modelling), we found that ash dams contribute little Hg to Lake Macquarie. Instead, most of the Hg contamination in the lake is a result of atmospheric emissions from the power plants, and these power plants are also depositing Hg in the urban areas to the west of the lake. Our results demonstrate that the multi-proxy approach demonstrated in the paper can be used to provide clues as to the source of Hg, so that appropriate mitigation strategies and regulatory frameworks can be implemented.

Šmídová, Klára | Svobodová, Markéta | Hofman, Jakub
Toxicokinetic studies appertain to the fundamental research of soil bioavailability. However, the research outcomes of aspects influencing uptake and elimination of hydrophobic organic compounds have not been summarized so far. In our review, a recapitulation of available toxicokinetic data (i.e. experimental conditions, if the steady state was reached, uptake and elimination rate constants, and bioaccumulation factors) is presented in well-arranged tables. Further, toxicokinetic models are overviewed in the schematic form. In the review, the required information could be quickly found and/or the experimental gaps easily identified. Generally a little is known about the effects of soil properties other than soil organic matter. Limited or no data are available about soil treatment, food supply during laboratory exposure, and metabolization in oligochaeta. The impact of these factors might be important especially for arable soils with typically low organic matter content but high consequences on humans. Besides these circumstances, other uncertainties between published studies have been found. Firstly, the scientific results are provided in heterogenous units: bioaccumulation factors as well as the rate constants are reported in dry or wet weight of soil and earthworms. The steady state is another critical factor because the time to reach the equilibrium is influenced not only by soil and compound characteristics but for example also by aging. Nevertheless, toxicokinetic studies bring irreplaceable information about the real situation in soil and our review help to define missing knowledge and estimate the scientific priorities.
