International audience | One of the best approaches for improving the assessment of metal toxicity in aquatic organisms is to study their organotropism (i.e., the distribution of metals among organs) through a dynamical approach (i.e., via kinetic experiments of metal bioaccumulation), to identify the tissues/organs that play a key role in metal regulation (e.g., storage or excretion). This study aims at comparing the organ-specific metal accumulation of a non-essential (Cd) and an essential metal (Zn), at their environmentally relevant exposure concentrations, in the gammarid Gammarus fossarum. Gammarids were exposed for 7 days to 109 Cd-or 65 Znradiolabeled water at a concentration of 52.1 and 416 ng.L-1 (stable equivalent), respectively, and then placed in clean water for 21 days. At different time intervals, the target organs (i.e., caeca, cephalons, intestines, gills, and remaining tissues) were collected and 109 Cd or 65 Zn contents were quantified by gamma-spectrometry. A one-compartment toxicokinetic (TK) model was fitted by Bayesian inference to each organ/metal dataset in order to establish TK parameters. Our results indicate: i) a contrasting distribution pattern of concentrations at the end of the accumulation phase (7 th day): gills > caeca ≈ intestines > cephalons > remaining tissues for Cd and intestines > caeca > gills > cephalons > remaining tissues for Zn; ii) a slower elimination of Cd than of Zn by all organs, especially in the gills in which the Cd concentration remained constant during the 21-day depuration phase, whereas Zn concentrations decreased sharply in all organs after 24 h in the depuration phase; iii) a major role of intestines in the uptake of waterborne Cd and Zn at environmentally relevant concentrations.

International audience | In recent decades, stormwater management has developed to allow stormwater to infiltrate directly into the soils instead of being collected and routed to sewer systems. However, during infiltration, stormwater creates a sediment deposit at the soil surface as the result of high loads of suspended particles (including pollutants), leading to the settlement of sedimentary layers prone to colonization by plants and earthworms. This study aims to investigate the earthworm communities of a peculiar infiltration basin and investigate the influence of edaphic conditions (water content, organic matter content, pH, height of sediment) and of persistent organic pollutants (POPs: PCBs, PCDDs and PCDFs) on these earthworms. Attention was paid to their age (juveniles or adults) and their functional group (epigeic, endogeic, anecic). We found that the earthworm abundance was mostly driven by edaphic conditions, with only a slight impact of POPs, with a significant negative impact of PCBDLno for juveniles and endogeic, and PCDDs for epigeic. On the contrary, the height of the sediment and the water content are beneficial for their presence and reproduction. Furthermore, POPs contents are also linked to physicochemical parameters of the sediment. Bioaccumulation was clearly revealed in the studied site but does not differ between juveniles and adults, except for PCDDs. Conversely, BAF values seemed to vary between functional groups, except for PCBDL non-ortho. It strongly varies with the family types (PCBs versus PCCD/Fs) and between congeners within the same family, with specific strong bioaccumulation for a few congeners.

International audience | Freshwater ecosystems are the main source of water for sustaining life on earth, and the biodiversity they support is the main source of valuable goods and services for human populations. Despite growing recognition of the impairment of freshwater ecosystems by micropollutant contamination, different conceptual and methodological considerations can newly be addressed to improve our understanding of the ecological impact into these ecosystems. Here, we originally combined in situ ecotoxicology and community ecology concepts to unveil the mechanisms structuring macroinvertebrate communities along a regional contamination gradient. The novelty of our study lies in the use of an innovative biomonitoring approach (measurement of metal contents in caged crustaceans) allowing to quantify and compare on a regional scale the levels of bioavailable metal contamination to which stream communities are exposed. We were hence able to identify 23 streams presenting a significant gradient of bioavailable metal contamination within the same catchment area in the South West of France, from which we also obtained data on the composition of resident macroinvertebrate communities. Analyses of structural and functional integrity of communities revealed an unexpected decoupling between taxonomic and functional diversity of communities in response to bioavailable metal contamination. We show that despite the negative impact of bioavailable metal contamination exposure on taxonomic diversity (with an average species loss of 17% in contaminated streams), functional diversity is maintained through a process of non-random species replacement by functional redundant species at the regional scale. Such unanticipated findings call for a deeper characterization of metal-tolerant communities' ability to cope with environmental variability in multistressed ecosystems.

International audience | Copper (Cu), as an essential element, is added to animal feed to stimulate growth and prevent disease. The forage crop alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) produced during Cu phytoextraction may be considered a biofortified crop to substitute the Cu feed additives for livestock production, beneficially alleviating Cu contamination in soils and reducing its input into agriculture systems. To assess this, alfalfa was grown in three similar soils with different Cu levels, i.e., 11, 439 and 779 mg kg−1 for uncontaminated soil (A), moderately Cu-contaminated soil (B) and highly Cu-contaminated soil (C), respectively. EDDS (Ethylenediamine-N,N′-disuccinic acid) was applied to the soils seven days before the first cutting at four rates (0, 0.5, 2 and 5 mmol kg−1) to enhance bioavailable Cu uptake. Alfalfa grew well in soils A and B but not in the highly Cu-contaminated soil. After applying EDDS, a significant biomass reduction of the first cutting shoot was only observed with 5 mmol kg−1 EDDS in the highly Cu-contaminated soil, with a 45% (P < 0.05) decrease when compared to the control. Alfalfa grown in the three soils gradually wilted after the first cutting with 5 mmol kg−1 EDDS, and Cu concentrations in the first cutting shoot were augmented strongly, by 250% (P < 0.05), 3500% (P < 0.05) and 6700% (P < 0.05) compared to the controls, respectively. Cu concentrations in alfalfa shoots were found to be higher in this study than in some fodder plants and further augmented in soils with higher Cu levels and with EDDS application. These findings suggest that alfalfa grown on clean soils or soils with up to 450 mg Cu kg−1 (with appropriate EDDS dosages) has the potential to be considered as a partial Cu supplementation for livestock. This research laid the foundation for the integration between Cu-phytoextraction and Cu-biofortification for livestock.

International audience | The environmental presence of mercury has dramatically increased over the past century, leading to increased uptake, especially by top predators such as seabirds. Understanding the exact sources of contamination requires an individual-level approach, which is especially challenging for species that migrate. We took such an approach and located the wintering areas of 80 common terns (Sterna hirundo) through tracking, and, across years, collected feathers grown in those areas to assess their mercury levels using atomic absorption spectrometry. Although feathers of males and females did not differ in their mercury level, we found the average feather mercury level to be highest in birds wintering in the Canary Current (3.87 μg g⁻¹), medium in birds wintering in the Guinea Current (2.27 μg g⁻¹) and lowest in birds wintering in the Benguela Current (1.96 μg g⁻¹). Furthermore, we found considerable inter-annual fluctuations in feather mercury levels, a within-individual repeatability of 41%, that the mercury levels of 17% of feather samples exceeded the admitted toxicity threshold of 5 μg g⁻¹, and that the overall mean concentration of 3.4 μg g⁻¹ exceeded that of other published reports for the species. Further studies therefore should assess whether these levels lead to individual-level carry-over effects on survival and reproductive performance.

International audience | Massive use of pesticides in conventional agriculture leads to accumulation in soil of complex mixtures, triggering questions about their potential ecotoxicological risk. This study assessed cropland soils containing pesticide mixtures sampled from conventional and organic farming systems at La Cage and Mons, France. The conventional agricultural field soils contained more pesticide residues (11 and 17 versus 3 and 11, respectively) and at higher concentrations than soils from organic fields (mean 6.6 and 10.5 versus 0.2 and 0.6 μg kg − 1 , respectively), including systemic insecticides belonging to neonicotinoids, carbamate herbicides and broadspectrum fungicides mostly from the azole family. A risk quotient (RQ i) approach evaluated the toxicity of the pesticide mixtures in soil, assuming concentration addition. Based on measured concentrations, both conventional agricultural soils posed high risks to soil invertebrates, especially due to the presence of epoxiconazole and imidacloprid, whereas soils under organic farming showed negligible to medium risk. To confirm the outcome of the risk assessment, toxicity of the soils was determined in bioassays following standardized test guidelines with seven representative non-target invertebrates: earthworms (Eisenia andrei, Lumbricus rubellus, Aporrectodea caliginosa), enchytraeids (Enchytraeus crypticus), Collembola (Folsomia candida), oribatid mites (Oppia nitens), and snails (Cantareus aspersus). Collembola and enchytraeid survival and reproduction and land snail growth were significantly lower in soils from conventional compared to organic agriculture. The earthworms displayed different responses: L. rubellus showed higher mortality on soils from conventional agriculture and large body mass loss in all field soils, E. andrei showed considerable mass loss and strongly reduced reproduction, and A. caliginosa showed significantly reduced acetylcholinesterase activity in soils from conventional agriculture. The oribatid mites did not show consistent differences between organic and conventional farming soils. These results highlight that conventional agricultural practices pose a high risk for soil invertebrates and may threaten soil functionality, likely due to additive or synergistic "cocktail effects". ☆ This paper has been recommended for acceptance by Montes Marques.

International audience | Bioindicator species are increasingly valuable in environmental pollution monitoring, and elasmobranch species include many suitable candidates for that role. By measuring contaminants and employing biomarkers of effect inrelevant elasmobranch species, scientists may gain important insights about the impacts of pollution in marine ecosystems. This review compiles biomarkers applied in elasmobranchs to assess the effect of pollutants (e.g.,metals, persistent organic pollutants, and plastics), and the environmental changes induced by anthropogenic activities (e.g., shifts in marine temperature, pH, and oxygenation). Over 30 biomarkers measured in more than12 species were examined, including biotransformation biomarkers (e.g., cytochrome P450 1A), oxidative stress-related biomarkers (e.g., superoxide anion, lipid peroxidation, catalase, and vitamins), stress proteins (e.g., heatshock protein 70), reproductive and endocrine biomarkers (e.g., vitellogenin), osmoregulation biomarkers (e.g., trimethylamine N-oxide, Na+/K+-ATPase, and plasma ions), energetic and neurotoxic biomarkers (e.g., lactatedehydrogenase, lactate, and cholinesterases), and histopathological and morphologic biomarkers (e.g., tissue lesions and gross indices).

Sounds from human activities such as shipping and seismic surveys have been progressively invading natural soundscapes and pervading oceanic ambient sounds for decades. Benthic invertebrates are important ecosystem engineers that continually rework the sediment they live in. Here, we tested how low-frequency noise (LFN), a significant component of noise pollution, affects the sediment reworking activities of selected macrobenthic invertebrates. In a controlled laboratory setup, the effects of acute LFN exposure on the behavior of three abundant bioturbators on the North Atlantic coasts were explored for the first time by tracking their sediment reworking and bioirrigation activities in noisy and control environments via luminophore and sodium bromide (NaBr) tracers, respectively. The amphipod crustacean Corophium volutator was negatively affected by LFN, exhibiting lower bioturbation rates and shallower luminophore burial depths compared to controls. The effect of LFN on the polychaete Arenicola marina and the bivalve Limecola balthica remained inconclusive, although A. marina displayed greater variability in bioirrigation rates when exposed to LFN. Furthermore, a potential stress response was observed in L. balthica that could reduce bioturbation potential. Benthic macroinvertebrates may be in jeopardy along with the crucial ecosystem-maintaining services they provide. More research is urgently needed to understand, predict, and manage the impacts of anthropogenic noise pollution on marine fauna and their associated ecosystems.
