Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including brominated flame retardants (BFRs), perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and metals, can accumulate in marine mammals and be transferred to offspring. In this study, we analyzed 64 lipophilic POPs, including four emerging BFRs, in the blubber, liver and muscle of 17 adult common minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) from the Barents Sea to investigate occurrence and tissue partitioning. In addition, the placental transfer concentration ratios of 14 PFAS and 17 metals were quantified in the muscle of nine female-fetus pairs to investigate placental transfer. Legacy lipophilic POPs were the dominating compound group in every tissue, and we observed generally lower levels compared to previous studies from 1992 to 2001. We detected the emerging BFRs hexabromobenzene (HBB) and pentabromotoluene (PBT), but in low levels compared to the legacy POPs. We detected nine PFAS, and levels of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) were higher than detected from the same population in 2011, whilst levels of Hg were comparable to 2011. Levels of lipophilic contaminants were higher in blubber compared to muscle and liver on both a wet weight and lipid adjusted basis, but tissue partitioning of the emerging BFRs could not be determined due to the high number of samples below the limit of detection. The highest muscle ΣPFAS levels were quantified in fetuses (23 ± 8.7 ng/g ww), followed by adult males (7.2 ± 2.0 ng/gg ww) and adult females (4.5 ± 1.1 ng/g ww), showing substantial placental transfer from mother to fetus. In contrast, Hg levels in the fetus were lower than the mother. Levels were under thresholds for risk of health effects in the whales. During a 2018 retrieval cruise for abandoned snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) pots in the Barents Sea, approximately 8600 pots abandoned 1.5 years earlier were recovered. Forty-three percent of a subsample of 1000 pots contained snow crabs, with an average of three crabs per pot. Most of the crabs were alive (~98%) and dominated by large males. Pinch injuries and limb loss were common and tended to decline with increasing crab size. Reflex testing showed that the crabs were vital (i.e. the crabs moved their legs, chelipeds and maxillipeds when stimulated), which was supported by a relatively high meat content. However, energy reserves in the digestive glands (hepatopancreas reserves) were low, indicating overall energy deficiencies. Our results indicate considerable unaccounted mortality due to self-baiting, continued catch and cannibalism. The findings demonstrate that snow crab pots which are lost or abandoned in the Barents Sea fishery maintain huge potential for ghost-fishing impacts. | publishedVersion

As ice extent in the Arctic is declining, oil and gas activities will increase, with higher risk of oil spills to the marine environment. To determine biotransformation of dispersed weathered oil in newly formed ice, oil dispersions (2–3 ppm) were incubated in a mixture of natural seawater and frazil ice for 125 days at −2 °C. Dispersed oil in seawater without frazil ice were included in the experimental setup. Presence or absence of frazil ice was a strong driver for microbial community structures and affected the rate of oil degradation. n-alkanes were degraded faster in the presence of frazil ice, the opposite was the case for naphthalenes and 2–3 ring PAHs. No degradation of 4–6 ring PAHs was observed in any of the treatments. The total petroleum oil was not degraded to any significant degree, suggesting that oil will freeze into the ice matrix and persist throughout the icy season. | publishedVersion

peer reviewed | The concentrations of mercury (Hg), selenium (Se) and metallothioneins (MT) were evaluated in fetuses, calves, juveniles and adults of the endangered coastal Franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei) from Argentina. Mercury concentrations varied among analyzed tissues (liver, kidney, muscle and brain), with liver showing the higher concentrations in all specimens. An age-dependent accumulation was found in liver, kidney and brain. No significant relationship between Hg and MT concentrations was found for all tissues analyzed. Hepatic Hg molar concentrations were positively correlated with those of Se, indicating a great affinity between these two elements. Furthermore, dark granules of HgSe were observed in Kupffer cells in the liver by electron microscopy, suggesting the role of this macrophage in the detoxification of Hg. A transfer of Hg through placenta was proved. The presence of Hg in brain in all age classes did not show concentrations associated with neurotoxicity.

Mercury concentrations varied among analyzed tissues (liver, kidney, muscle and brain), with liver showing the higher concentrations in all specimens. An age-dependent accumulation was found in liver, kidney and brain. No significant relationship between Hg and MT concentrations was found for all tissues analyzed. Hepatic Hg molar concentrations were positively correlated with those of Se, indicating a great affinity between these two elements. Furthermore, dark granules of HgSe were observed in Kupffer cells in the liver by electron microscopy, suggesting the role of this macrophage in the detoxification of Hg. A transfer of Hg through placenta was proved. The presence of Hg in brain in all age classes did not show concentrations associated with neurotoxicity.

Field Monitoring of 2010-Tsunami Impact on Agricultural Soils and Irrigation Waters: Central Chile النص الكامل

An in situ post tsunami study was conducted to assess the effect of water management and rainfalls in soil properties and water quality at a low-lying coastal area of central Chile affected by Mw8.8 Earthquake Tsunami the night of 27 February 2010. Soil samples were taken at two depths (0 to 20 and 20 to 40 cm) during 2010 and late 2012. Water quality in a local shallow well was also monitored in 2010 and 2012. High soil salinity was recorded 2 months later than tsunami occurs, closely associated to water-soluble chloride and cations (Cl- >> Na+ >> Ca2+> Mg2+> K+), ionic toxicities, and vegetal inhibition (Vasconcellea pubescens) by less available water to plants. An initial reduction in soil pH due to ionic strength and coarse-textured class of soil was observed and the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) in soil varied between 5.7 and 11.2 (mmol L-1)(0.5) showing to be saline. Although SARw values are very high (> 18 (mmol L-1) 0.5), it does not exist risks of reduction on soil infiltration rates according to ECw (> 5 dS m(-1)) obtained. After 2 years, soil salinity was drastically reduced in the affected areas due to high soil permeability and natural attenuation (rainfalls and leaching effects), with sulfate and bicarbonate concentrations showing excessive values. Further, irrigation water quality returned to pre-tsunami situation, with only levels of sodium slightly exceeding desirable range from health point of view. Finally, it is suggested a proper design of irrigation systems before implementing other management practices

The SOLEPUR process for the treatment of pig slurry, using soil as a treatment medium, was developed in France. This process decreased the COD of pig slurry by 99,9% bound 99,9% of the phosphorus and removed approximately 80% of the nitrogen. The remaining nitrogen was oxidized in the soil into nitrate and leached out in drainage water. The process of denitrification was selected to remove nitrate from the leachate and raw pig slurry was used as an external carbon source. The field and laboratory experiments demonstrated efficient denitrification of nitrate-rich leachate at an appropriate carbon/nitrogen ratio. Although nitrite appeared during denitrification as a transient product, it was effectively removed by the en of denitrification. Depending on the C/N ratio, the process of denitrification was accomplished after between 7 and 60 days and the denitrification rate varied between 0,5 and 1 kg N/d. Although a COD/NO3--N ration of 7 : 1 was essential for efficient denitrification, a higher ration of 8,75 : 1 preferable in order to obtain a complete and rapid denitrification. Further improvements are proposed are proposed in order to optimize the denitrification process. | Le procédé SOLEPUR pour le traitement du lisier de porc utilisant le sol comme support principal d'épuration a été développé en France. Ce procédé élimine 99,9% de la DCO du lisier, piège 99,9% du phosphore et élimine environ 80% de l'azote. Le procédé de dénitrification a été choisi pour éliminer les nitrates issus des percolats et le lisier de porc a été utilisé comme source de carbone. Les essais au champ et en laboratoire démontrent l'efficacité de la dénitrification dès lors que le rapport Carbone-sur-Azote était approprié. Selon ce ratio C/N, le processus de dénitrification se déroule au cours de séquences allant de 7 à 60 jours et le taux de dénitrification varie de 0,5 à 1 kgN/jour. Un ration DCO/N-NO3 de 7:1 est indispensable au bon déroulement de la dénitrification.
