Characteristics, sources, and transport of tetrabromobisphenol A and bisphenol A in soils from a typical e-waste recycling area in South China

We studied the tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and bisphenol A (BPA) patterns and their sources and transport in different land-use soils from Longtang, South China, a typical electronic waste recycling center. We also studied the reductive debromination of TBBPA in paddy soils. TBBPA and BPA concentrations (on a dry weight basis) were undetected–220 and 0.50–325 ng/g, respectively, and both increased, by similar factors, in the following order: pond sediments < paddy soils = vegetable soils < wasteland < dismantling sites < former open burning sites. BPA concentrations were higher than TBBPA concentrations in all six land-use soils, and they correlated significantly. TBBPA and BPA were transported through the soil profiles, being found at relatively high concentrations in soil 0–40 cm deep, but only at low concentrations in soil 40–80 cm deep. The surface soil concentrations appear to have been strongly affected by crude recycling activities, and former open burning and dismantling sites were the main point sources. The areas surrounding the open burning sites and dismantling sites have been contaminated not only by the dumping of waste residues but also by fly ash deposition, even though the agricultural soils are far from the point pollution sources. Some BPA in the soils is likely to be the reductive debromination product of TBBPA because the long rainy season promotes TBBPA transformation and because BPA can persist for a long time. Incubation experiments confirmed that TBBPA could be transformed into BPA and that BPA could accumulate in waterlogged paddy soils, and this may be why BPA concentrations were higher than TBBPA concentrations in the Longtang area.

Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) embryos were exposed to sediments spiked with environmental concentrations (300 and 3,000 ng/g dry weight) of pyrene (Pyr) and methylpyrene (MePyr) throughout their development. Embryotoxicity, teratogenicity, and transcriptional responses (qRT-PCR) were analyzed in embryos and newly hatched larvae. The genotoxicity of the two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was also tested in prolarvae using the comet assay. Exposure to each compound had a clear impact on embryonic development and resulted in several teratogenic effects, including cardiovascular injuries, reduced absorption of yolk sac reserves, and jaw and spinal deformities. Interestingly, the overall toxic effects of Pyr and MePyr considerably overlapped those induced following dioxin exposure. qRT-PCR analysis revealed the transcriptional induction of genes involved in mitochondrial energetic metabolism (coxI), xenobiotic biotransformation (cyp1a), and cell cycle regulation (wnt1) by the two PAHs. MePyr also activated cell cycle arrest (p53), oxidative DNA damage repair (ogg1), and retinoid-mediated (raldh2 and rarα1) gene transcription. DNA damage was not found to be significantly increased following Pyr and MePyr exposure. The lack of significant genotoxic effect in comparison to the control might be the consequence of the efficient onset of DNA damage repair mechanisms as suggested by ogg1 gene transcription upregulation. Results reported in the present study have brought new insights into the modes of action of Pyr, and the effects of MePyr exposure have been investigated in fish ELS for the first time.

In this study, we evaluated the phylogenetic diversity of culturable bacterial endophytes of Zea mays plants growing in an agricultural soil contaminated with Zn and Cd. Endophytic bacterial counts were determined in roots and shoots, and isolates were grouped by random amplified polymorphic DNA and identified by 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing. Endophytes were further characterized for the production of plant growth-promoting (PGP) substances, such as NH₃, siderophores, indol-3-acetic acid (IAA), hydrogen cyanide and extracellular enzymes, and for the capacity to solubilize phosphate. The endophytes producing higher amounts of IAA were screened for their tolerance to Zn and Cd and used as bioinoculants for maize seedlings grown in the Zn/Cd-contaminated soil. The counts of endophytes varied between plant tissues, being higher in roots (6.48 log₁₀g⁻¹fresh weight) when compared to shoots (5.77 log₁₀g⁻¹fresh weight). Phylogenetic analysis showed that endophytes belong to three major groups: α-Proteobacteria (31 %), γ-Proteobacteria (26 %) and Actinobacteria (26 %). Pseudomonas, Agrobacterium, Variovorax and Curtobacterium were among the most represented genera. Endophytes were well-adapted to high Zn/Cd concentrations (up to 300 mg Cd l⁻¹and 1,000 mg Zn l⁻¹) and showed ability to produce several PGP traits. Strains Ochrobactrum haematophilum ZR 3-5, Acidovorax oryzae ZS 1-7, Frigoribacterium faeni ZS 3-5 and Pantoea allii ZS 3-6 increased root elongation and biomass of maize seedlings grown in soil contaminated with Cd and Zn. The endophytes isolated in this study have potential to be used in bioremediation/phytoremediation strategies.

PM₁ aerosol characterization on organic tracers for biomass burning (levoglucosan and its isomers and dehydroabietic acid) was conducted within the AERTRANS project. PM₁ filters (N = 90) were sampled from 2010 to 2012 in busy streets in the urban centre of Madrid and Barcelona (Spain) at ground-level and at roof sites. In both urban areas, biomass burning was not expected to be an important local emission source, but regional emissions from wildfires, residential heating or biomass removal may influence the air quality in the cities. Although both areas are under influence of high solar radiation, Madrid is situated in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, while Barcelona is located at the Mediterranean Coast and under influence of marine atmospheres. Two extraction methods were applied, i.e. Soxhlet and ASE, which showed equivalent results after GC-MS analyses. The ambient air concentrations of the organic tracers for biomass burning increased by an order of magnitude at both sites during winter compared to summer. An exception was observed during a PM event in summer 2012, when the atmosphere in Barcelona was directly affected by regional wildfire smoke and levels were four times higher as those observed in winter. Overall, there was little variation between the street and roof sites in both cities, suggesting that regional biomass burning sources influence the urban areas after atmospheric transport. Despite the different atmospheric characteristics in terms of air relative humidity, Madrid and Barcelona exhibit very similar composition and concentrations of biomass burning organic tracers. Nevertheless, levoglucosan and its isomers seem to be more suitable for source apportionment purposes than dehydroabietic acid. In both urban areas, biomass burning contributions to PM were generally low (2 %) in summer, except on the day when wildfire smoke arrive to the urban area. In the colder periods the contribution increase to around 30 %, indicating that regional biomass burning has a substantial influence on the urban air quality.

Laboratory studies on Escherichia coli O157:H7 survival in soils from four different land use types: forest, tea plantation, bamboo grove, and vegetable garden were investigated at 25 ± 1 °C with the field capacity (soil water content at −33 kPa). Results showed that E. coli O157:H7 declined quickly in the test soils, but its survival dynamics varied in the soils under different land use types. The survival time needed to reach the detection limit (td) in the test soils ranged from 2.1 to 3.6 days, with slightly longer tdvalues being observed in soils from the bamboo grove. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the tdvalues were shorter in sandy, lower pH, and lower organic carbon content soils. Different E. coli O157:H7 survival time in the soils under different land uses suggests that it is important to adapt proper management practices for reducing the potential risks of pathogen contamination when diary manure is applied to agricultural land.

A natural sediment spiked with three individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; pyrene, phenanthrene and benzo[a]pyrene) was used to expose zebrafish embryos and larvae during 4 days. The total PAH concentration was 4.4 μg g⁻¹which is in the range found in sediment from contaminated areas. Quantification of metabolites in the larvae after exposure confirmed the actual contamination of the larvae and indicated an active metabolism especially for pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene. After a transfer in a clean medium, the larvae were reared to adulthood and evaluated for survival, growth, reproduction, and behavior. Measured endpoints revealed a late disruption of growth (appearing at 5 months) and a trend toward a lower reproductive ability. Adults of embryos exposed to sediment spiked with PAHs displayed lethargic and/or anxiety-like behaviors. This latter behavior was also identified in offspring at larval stage. All together, these effects could have detrimental consequences on fish performances and contribution to recruitment.

Ecotoxicological studies have shown that nanosilver is among the most toxic nanomaterials to aquatic organisms. However, research has so far focused on the determination of acute effects. Combined effects of nanosilver with other substances have not yet been studied in aquatic organisms. The present study aimed to investigate the chronic toxicity of nanosilver as well as the potential of nanosilver to influence the effects of co-occurring substances on the freshwater mudsnail Potamopyrgus antipodarum. In 28-day chronic toxicity experiments, the effects of nanosilver on the reproduction of P. antipodarum were assessed. In order to evaluate the influence of nanosilver on other substances, 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE₂) was chosen as model compound due to the well-characterized effects on P. antipodarum. In addition to effects on reproduction, exposure to nanosilver and EE₂was monitored by determining the expression of estrogen-responsive transcripts (estrogen receptor and vitellogenin encoding genes). Exposure to nanosilver decreased the reproduction of P. antipodarum (EC₁₀: 5.57 μg l⁻¹; EC₅₀: 15.0 μg l⁻¹). Exposure to EE₂significantly stimulated the embryo production at 25 ng l⁻¹. The presence of nanosilver led to increased EE₂effects at EE₂concentrations that had no influence on reproduction when applied in absence of nanosilver. In contrast, combined exposure to nanosilver decreased EE₂effects at concentrations that stimulated reproduction and the expression of estrogen responsive genes when applied in the absence of nanosilver. This is the first study demonstrating an influence of nanosilver on the effects of co-contaminants on aquatic organisms. The study further highlights the need for chronic experiments to properly assess environmental risks of nanosilver and their effects on co-occurring contaminants.

To document the toxicity of copper and nickel in binary mixtures, freshwater amphipods Gammarus pulex were exposed to the metals given independently or as mixtures. Toxicity to Cu alone was relatively high: 96-h LC₁₀and LC₅₀were found at 91 and 196 μg L⁻¹, respectively. Toxicity to Ni alone was very low, with 96-h LC₁₀and LC₅₀of 44,900 and 79,200 μg L⁻¹, respectively. Mixture toxicities were calculated from single toxicity data using conventional models. Modeled toxicity was then compared with the measured toxicity of the binary mixture. Two kinds of mixtures were tested. Type I mixtures were designed as combinations of Cu and Ni given at the same effect concentrations, when taken independently, to identify possible interactions between copper and nickel. In type II mixtures, Cu concentrations varied from 0 to 600 μg L⁻¹while the nickel concentration was kept constant at 500 μg L⁻¹to mimic conditions of industrial wastewater discharges. Ni and Cu showed synergic effects in type I mixtures while type II mixtures revealed antagonistic effects. Low doses of Ni reduced Cu toxicity towards G. pulex. These results show that even for simple binary mixtures of contaminants with known chemistry and toxicity, unexpected interactions between the contaminants may occur. This reduces the reliability of conventional additivity models.

This study presents the performance evaluation of a novel denuder-equipped PM₁(particles having aerodynamic diameter less than 1 μm) sampler, tested during fog-dominated wintertime, in the city of Kanpur, India. One PM₁sampler and one denuder-equipped PM₁sampler were co-located to collect ambient PM₁for 25 days. The mean PM₁mass concentration measured on foggy days with the PM₁sampler and the denuder-equipped PM₁sampler was found to be 165.95 and 135.48 μg/m³, respectively. The mean PM₁mass concentration measured on clear days with the PM₁sampler and the denuder-equipped PM₁sampler was observed to be 159.66 and 125.14 μg/m³, respectively. The mass concentration with denuder-fitted PM₁sampler for both foggy and clear days was always found less than the PM₁sampler. The same drift was observed in the concentrations of water-soluble ions and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC). Moreover, it was observed that the use of denuder leads to a significant reduction in the PM positive artifact. The difference in the concentration of chemical species obtained by two samplers indicates that the PM₁sampler without denuder had overestimated the concentrations of chemical species in a worst-case scenario by almost 40 %. Denuder-fitted PM₁sampler can serve as a useful sampling tool in estimating the true values for nitrate, ammonium, potassium, sodium and WSOC present in the ambient PM.

PM₂.₅and PM₂.₅–₁₀aerosol samples were collected in four seasons during November 2010, January, April, and August 2011 at 13 urban/suburban sites and one background site in Western Taiwan Straits Region (WTSR), which is the coastal area with rapid urbanization, high population density, and deteriorating air quality. The 10 days average PM₂.₅concentrations were 92.92, 51.96, 74.48, and 89.69 μg/m³in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively, exceeding the Chinese ambient air quality standard for annual average value of PM₂.₅(grade II, 35 μg/m³). Temporal distribution of water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) in PM₂.₅was coincident with PM₂.₅mass concentrations, showing highest in spring, lowest in summer, and middle in autumn and winter. WSIIs took considerable proportion (42.2∼50.1 %) in PM₂.₅and PM₂.₅–₁₀. Generally, urban/suburban sites had obviously suffered severer pollution of fine particles compared with the background site. The WSIIs concentrations and characteristics were closely related to the local anthropogenic activities and natural environment, urban sites in cities with higher urbanization level, or sites with weaker diffuse condition suffered severer WSIIs pollution. Fossil fuel combustion, traffic emissions, crustal/soil dust, municipal constructions, and sea salt and biomass burnings were the major potential sources of WSIIs in PM₂.₅in WTSR according to the result of principal component analysis.
