Little data are available on the bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coral reef fish from the South China Sea (SCS). In this study, we collected 21 coral reef fish species from the Xisha and Nansha Islands in the SCS to investigate the occurrence of 16 US-EPA PAHs. The total PAH concentrations (ΣPAH) in the collected fish ranged from 12.79 to 409.28 ng/g dry weight (dw, Xisha Islands) and from 32.71 to 139.09 ng/g dw (Nansha Islands), respectively. The ΣPAH concentration of Scarus niger collected from the Xisha Islands (237.13 ng/g dw) was about twofold higher than that of Scarus niger collected from the Nansha Islands (139.09 ng/g dw). The dominant compounds were found to be 2-ring and 3-ring PAHs. Based on qualitative and quantitative analyses, the main PAH sources were found to be coal and biomass combustion (50.43%), petroleum sources (25.86%), and vehicular emissions (16.10%).

Micro(nano)plastics, as emerging contaminants, have attracted worldwide attention. Nowadays, the environmental distribution, sources, and analysis methods and technologies of micro(nano)plastics have been well studied and recognized. Nevertheless, the role of micro(nano)plastic particles as vectors for attaching organisms is not fully understood. In this paper, the role of micro(nano)plastics as vectors, and their potential effects on the ecology are introduced. Micro(nano)plastics could 1) accelerate the diffusion of organisms in the environment, which may result in biological invasion; 2) increase the gene exchange between attached biofilm communities, causing the transfer of pathogenic and antibiotic resistance genes; 3) enhance the rate of energy, material and information flow in the environment. Accordingly, the role of microplastics as vectors for organisms should be further evaluated in the future research.

Mucientes, Gonzalo | Queiroz, Nuno
In a context where the problem of plastic pollution is globally increasing, more studies are needed to assess the real impact in oceanic megafauna. Here, we reported on the incidence of plastic and also retained hooks in two species of commercially exploited pelagic sharks in two ocean basins, the North Atlantic and South Pacific. In the South Pacific, 1.18% of caught blue sharks were observed with plastic debris on their body and 4.82% and with retained hooks, while 0.00% of shortfin makos had plastic debris and 1.76% were recorded with retained hooks. In the North Atlantic, 0.21% of blue sharks had plastic debris and 0.37% of blue, and 0.78% of shortfin makos were observed with retained hooks.

Interest in the presence of pharmaceutically active compounds in the aquatic environment has been growing for over 20 years, yet very few studies deal with the metabolism of pharmaceuticals in marine organisms. In this study, the bioaccumulation under short-term conditions and metabolism of diclofenac were investigated. Mytilus trossulus was used as a representative of the Baltic benthic fauna. The mussels were exposed to diclofenac at a concentration of 133.33 μg/L for five days, following a five-day depuration phase. The highest concentration of diclofenac (7.79 μg/g dw) in tissues was determined on day 3. Subsequently, the concentration of diclofenac in tissues decreased rapidly to 0.86 μg/g dw on day 5. After five days of depuration, the concentration of diclofenac was 0.21 μg/g dw. Hydroxylated diclofenac metabolites were found both in tissues of mussels and water. This study shows that M. trossulus has the potential to accumulate diclofenac and metabolize it to 4-OH and 5-OH diclofenac.

Commercial marine organisms were collected from the coast of Xiangshan Bay to investigate the concentrations of eight heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and evaluate the potential health risks. The results indicated considerable variations in the heavy metal concentrations among six species groups, of them mollusks (seasnail, benthic bivalve, and oyster) generally contained relative high levels of most metals, followed by crustaceans (crab and shrimp), by contrast, fish had low concentrations of all metals, except Hg. Three heavy metal groups were identified to interpret the accumulative characteristics in the marine organisms. Spatial distributions illustrated the geographical variations of heavy metal concentrations in the sampling areas. Moreover, maricultured organisms demonstrated lower heavy metal concentrations than did the wild. Health risks of most heavy metals exposed from marine organism consumption were safe, except for As which is associated with the high target cancer risk values.

2019
Heavy metal elements, including Zn, Cd, As, Ni, Cu, Pb and Cr, were detected in soils (no deeper than 75 m) from newly reclaimed zones of Shanghai, China. The Zn concentration exceeded soil quality limits. The Zn contamination was tested in both dredger fills and sedimentary layers (①₃–₃, ②₃, ④ and ⑤₁–₁). However, it was not detected in layer ⑤₁–₂–⑨. PCA and HCA analysis show that exogenous Zn probably was the contaminant source of dredger fills before the fills were dredged from the neighboring waters. Stochastic heterogeneity of the dredger fills affects the Zn-depollution remarkably. Numerical simulations show both acid precipitation and widespread drainage channels in the zones contributed to Zn-decrease in the dredger fills no deeper than 1.2 m. Acid rainstorms work better than acid constant precipitation in Zn-remediation for layers below 0.4 m. To remove Zn contamination in deep dredger fills, un-consolidation of the fills should be utilized.

2019
Microbial communities in wetland soils play vital roles in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients. In this study, the soil samples were collected from Suaeda, reed and Suaeda-reed hybrid zones in Shuangtaizi River Estuary, Northeast China, and the rhizosphere bacterial communities were compared using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The microbial richness, diversity and structure of bacterial communities varied greatly in reed and Suaeda. Canonical correspondence analysis and Mantel test indicated that pH was the most significant factor (P < 0.05) in bacterial community assembly. Proteobacteria was the most dominant phylum, accounting for 45.7–58.0% of the total sequences. Thioprofundum, Thiohalomonas and Exiguobacterium were the predominant genera in Suaeda, while Exiguobacterium, Gillisia, Desulfomonile, Citrobacter, Thioprofundum and Acinetobacter were the core species in reed. PICRUSt analysis revealed similar functional profiles of rhizosphere microbiota in reed and Suaeda. Nitrate reduction related genes were abundant for nitrogen metabolism, whereas assimilatory sulfate reduction was the major process for sulfur metabolism.
اظهر المزيد [+] اقل [-]Responses of salinity and chlorophyll-a to extreme rainfall events in the northwest Arabian Gulf: Emphasis on Shatt Al-Arab النص الكامل

Alosairi, Y. | Alsulaiman, N. | Petrov, P. | Karam, Q.
Recent extreme hydrological events, such as high rainfall and storms, have been linked to climate change worldwide due to their relatively uncommon trends, which are generally described as having varying frequencies and higher intensities. Similar extreme rainfall trends were observed in the northwest Arabian Gulf during the 2018–2019 season. Heavy rainfall events have triggered high discharges in the river of Shatt Al-Arab, where, prior to these events, the discharge rate has exhibited a declining trend over the past 40 years. Shatt Al-Arab provides various physical, chemical, and biological functions in the region. In this study, some recent and extensive measurements of salinity and post-processed satellite images of chlorophyll-a in the northwest Arabian Gulf were recorded to assess the response of the region to the higher discharges. The results indicated that the salinity decreased significantly during and after the rainfall events in response to the higher discharges from Shatt Al-Arab. The effects of higher discharges extended over most of Kuwait's coastline, including Kuwait Bay. The chlorophyll-a distributions doubled after the extreme events, emphasising the effects of Shatt Al-Arab. Collectively, the results indicated that the discharge from Shatt Al-Arab during the extreme event exceeded 1400 m³/s, while, in the previous seasons, it rarely exceeded 80 m³/s. The higher discharge levels of discharge would result in various changes in ecology at multiple levels due to the sudden and reversing shift in the hydro-environmental processes.

Cyst abundance and identity are essential for understanding and predicting blooms, and for assessing the dispersal of toxic target dinoflagellate species by natural or human mediated ways, as with ballast waters. The aim of this study was to apply rapid, specific and sensitive qPCR assays to enumerate toxic dinoflagellate cysts in sediment samples collected from Adriatic harbours. The molecular standard curves of various target species allowed obtaining the rDNA copy number per cyst. The analytical sensitivity for specific standard curves was determined to be 2 or 10 rDNA copies per reaction. The abundance varied in the range of 1–747 dinoflagellate cysts g⁻¹ dry weight. The assays showed greater sensitivity as compared to counts by light microscopy. This qPCR method revealed a powerful tool for the quantification of cysts from toxic dinoflagellate resting stages in sediment samples from Adriatic ports.
اظهر المزيد [+] اقل [-]An evaluation of the Fishing For Litter (FFL) scheme in the UK in terms of attitudes, behavior, barriers and opportunities النص الكامل

Wyles, Kayleigh J. | Pahl, Sabine | Carroll, Lauren | Thompson, Richard C.
Marine litter is a global, persistent, and increasing threat to the oceans, and numerous initiatives aim to address this challenge. Fishing For Litter (FFL) is a voluntary clean-up scheme, where litter is collected as part of routine fishing operations. We surveyed fishers (n = 97) and stakeholders (n = 22) in the UK to investigate perceptions of FFL, its strengths and weaknesses, and potential co-benefits of the scheme. Fishers reported being aware of and concerned about the negative impacts of litter. Overall, FFL was evaluated very positively (7.85/10). In addition, FFL fishers reported less environmentally harmful waste management behaviors both out at sea and in other contexts than did non-FFL fishers. Fishers and stakeholders listed strengths and weaknesses of the scheme and made suggestions for future changes. As well as directly helping to remove litter, this paper demonstrates that clean-up schemes can make a contribution to addressing the underlying causes of marine pollution.
