Microplastic content variation in water column: The observations employing a novel sampling tool in stratified Baltic Sea

A new tool was developed for microplastics (MPs) investigation in the water column. It can collect several cubic meters of water from predefined water layers down to 100 m. The tool was tested in the Baltic Sea during the period of spring thermocline formation. Strong MPs stratification was observed at all of the sampled stations. On coastal stations (~30 m deep), stratification with high fibers content was associated with the proximity of terrestrial sources and estuarine discharges, while on off-shore stations the variability of MPs was related to vertical thermohaline structure. Mean MPs content was the 32.2 (SD 50.4) pcs/m³. Elevated MPs concentrations were observed in subsurface, near-bottom and thermohaline layers compared with intermediate layers. The heterogeneity of MPs distribution suggests that MPs particles can be retained above the density-gradient layers in coastal seas and the World Ocean.

The quality of seawater needs to be continuously monitored due to its effect on human life and natural ecosystems. However, the balance of the extent, spatial pattern and maintenance costs of marine environmental monitoring remains a challenging issue which is crucial for decision-makers. The main contribution of this work suggests taking advantage of two minimization criteria (TMC: integrating minimization of Kriging variance and minimization of relative error at a given confidence level) to improve the design and optimization of a marine environmental monitoring network. To achieve this purpose, the spatial simulated annealing (SSA) method is applied to identify the best locations for monitoring network optimization. For the case study, phosphate (PO4) is used as an indicator to characterize the seawater quality in northern coastal waters of Zhejiang Province, China. The 122 existing sites have redundancies (about 78 sites) that can be effectively identified and removed to reduce costs with the given relative error (less than 10%) and confidence level (95%). Some new sites can be added and adjusted to improve the quality of costal environmental monitoring based on quantitative analysis. In addition, the relationship between the number of the monitoring sites and monitoring precision is analyzed. The results suggest that the present method using TMC can provide a scientific basis for marine environmental monitoring and management.

Oxidant treatment of ballast water (BW) is commonly used in BW systems in order to minimize the transport of alien species. The release of disinfection by-products (DBPs) associated to the treatment of BW and cross-contamination of butyltin (BT) compounds through BW discharge is a topic of environmental concern. A chemical port baseline survey has been conducted in seven ports of the Adriatic Sea. Analysis have been performed on transplanted mussels, surface sediment, seawater, BW. Results showed an evidence of BT contamination, particularly in sediments, probably related to their illegal usage or to intensive shipping activities. Therefore, BW may act as a vector and contribute to re-buildup of BT contamination in the coastal regions.A baseline set of data concerning DBPs is provided, showing the preferential distribution of these compounds in the marine environment that will be useful for future considerations on monitoring and assessment of chemical contamination associated with BW.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Climate warming may bear a penalty on future ozone air quality, even in the absence of changes in anthropogenic activities. This penalty has important implications for policy-making, but its quantification involves complex meteorological, chemical, and biological processes and feedbacks that are not well understood. We examined how climate-sensitive processes may affect surface ozone, identified key knowledge gaps uncovered by recent studies, and summarized latest assessments of the climate change penalty on ozone air quality. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent analyses have challenged earlier paradigms on how climate change may affect surface ozone. The widely accepted associations of high ozone events with stagnation and heat waves require re-examination. Emission responses of natural precursors to climate warming may be significantly modulated by CO₂ levels and ecosystem feedbacks, such that the direction of emission changes cannot be robustly determined at this time. Climate variability may drive fluctuations in surface ozone, which has implications for near-term air quality management. Recent studies have generally projected a climate change penalty on ozone air quality, although the magnitudes are smaller than those projected by earlier studies. This review examined the latest understanding on the climate change penalty to surface ozone. Critical uncertainties are associated with the meteorological, chemical, and biological processes linking climate warming and ozone, and many of the known feedbacks are not yet included in models. Further research is needed to examine those processes in order to better quantify the climate change penalty on surface ozone to inform policy-making.

As part of a Comparative Risk Assessment (CRA) developed and reported previously, oil spill modeling of a hypothetical blowout at 1400 m in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico was performed to evaluate changes in oil exposures with alternative response options, i.e., combinations of mechanical recovery, in-situ burning, surface dispersant application and subsea dispersant injection (SSDI). To assess if conclusions from this study could be extended to other spill scenarios, sensitivities of the predicted oil fate and exposure metrics to location, release depth, oil and gas flow rate, gas content, orifice size, oil droplet size distribution, and biodegradation rates were examined. Results show that the fraction of oil surfacing is highly sensitive to oil droplet size distribution and depth of release. Across the simulations performed, SSDI use reduced oil droplet sizes released, thereby mitigating surface and shoreline oiling, volatile hydrocarbon exposures, and potential surface water column exposures.

Soundscapes are vital to acoustically specialized animals. Using passive acoustic monitoring data, the temporal and spectral variations in the soundscape of a Chinese white dolphin hotspot were analyzed. By cluster analysis, the 1/3 octave band power spectrum can be grouped into three bands with median overall contribution rates of 35.24, 14.14 and 30.61%. Significant diel and tidal soundscape variations were observed with a generalized linear model. Temporal patterns and frequency ranges of middle frequency band sound matched well with those of fish vocalization, indicating that fish might serve as a signal source. Dolphin sounds were mainly detected in periods involving low levels of ambient sound and without fish vocalization, which could reflect noise avoidance and passive eavesdropping behaviors engaged in by the predator. Pre-construction data can be used to assess the effects of offshore windfarms on acoustic environments and aquatic animals by comparing them with the soundscape of postconstruction and/or postmitigation.

Marine copepods have been shown to readily ingest microplastics - a crucial first step in the transfer of plastics into the marine food chain. Copepods have also been shown to elicit a foraging behavioural response to the presence of olfactory stimuli, such as dimethyl sulfide (DMS) – a volatile compound produced by their algal prey. Here, we show that the temperate Calanoid copepod Calanus helgolandicus displays enhanced grazing rates of between 0.7 and 3-fold (72%–292%) on microplastics that have been infused in a DMS solution, compared to DMS-free controls. Environmental exposure of microplastics may result in the development of an olfactory signature that includes algal-derived compounds such as DMS. Our study provides evidence that copepods, which are known to use chemosensory mechanisms to identify and locate dense sources of palatable prey, may be at an increased risk of plastic ingestion if it mimics the scent of their prey.

Mussels pose health risks to consumers through accumulation of trace metals from the ocean. Saldanha Bay, South Africa, has heavy industry and international shipping, creating concerns over pollution levels for aquaculture facilities. Samples of C. meridionalis and M. galloprovincialis were collected from mussel rafts over two-years and analysed for trace metal content using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry. Aluminium, Cr, Fe, Zn, Cd and Pb were higher in M. galloprovincialis, while C. meridionalis accumulated more Cu and Mn. Temporal fluctuations occurred for Fe and As concentrations in C. meridionalis, and Fe, As, Hg and Pb in M. galloprovincialis. Arsenic exceeded South African regulatory limits (3 mg/kg) once in each species (max = 3.4 mg/kg w.w.). Lead concentrations in M. galloprovincialis were within EU regulatory limits for bivalves (1.5 mg/kg) but exceeded SA regulatory limits for fish (0.5 mg/kg) four times. Overall, farmed mussels from Saldanha Bay were determined to be safe for human consumption.

Microbiological sea water quality is a public health problem that has serious repercussions in the tourism and economy of Colombia. This study determines the concentrations of Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Clostridium perfringens at eleven beach water points and seven streams along the coast of the Department of Atlántico, Colombia. In seawater, total E. coli, E. faecalis and C. perfringens concentrations were found between 16 and 572 cfu/100 mL, 7–450 cfu/100 ml and 2–125 cfu/100 ml, respectively. The highest counts were observed mainly on urbanised beaches and in correspondence with streams whose waters had a high concentration of faecal origin microorganisms, which represent a serious health risk factor for bathers. Relevant efforts have to be addressed to improve the microbiological quality of these beaches by the establishment of efficient wastewater management programs aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the local treatment plant and the control of illegal sewage pouring onto the coast.

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, naphthalene and n-hexane evaporating from a thin oil film was measured for 30 min in a small-scale test system at 2 and 13 °C and the impact of physicochemical properties on airborne benzene with time after bulk oil release was studied. Linear mixed-effects models for airborne benzene in three time periods; first 5, first 15 and last 15 min of sampling, indicated that benzene content in fresh oil, oil group (condensate/light crude oil) and pour point were significant determinants explaining 63–73% of the total variance in the outcome variables. Oils with a high pour point evaporated considerably slower than oils with a low pour point. The mean air concentration of total volatile organic compounds was significatly higher at 13 °C (735 ppm) compared to 2 °C (386 ppm) immediately after release of oil, but at both temperatures the concentration rapidly declined.
