Occurrence, distribution, and potential ecological risks of ten organophosphate esters (OPEs) and nine synthetic musks (SMs) were investigated in sediments from the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) and adjacent East China Sea (ECS). The total concentrations of OPEs in the surface sediments ranged from 0.977 to 19.0 ng/g dry weight (dw) with tris(2-chloro-propyl) phosphate being the dominant component. Total concentrations of SMs ranged from 0.176 to 7.25 ng/g dw, with 1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethylcyclopenta(g)-2-benzopyran and 7-acetyl-1,1,3,4,4,6-hexamethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene as the dominant SMs. Higher sedimentary concentrations of ΣOPEs and ΣSMs were found in the river mouths of the YRE, inter face of Hangzhou Bay, and mud area of the ECS; the results suggested that terrestrial discharge might be the main source of OPEs and SMs in the studied region. Risk assessment revealed that low ecological risks were posed by OPEs, and limited to low ecological risks were posed by SMs.

Almost everywhere in the marine ecosystem contains microplastics. Although their environmental contamination is a global problem, relatively little is known about their distribution and abundance in the Gulf of Guinea. This study looked at the spatial dynamics of microplastics in the sea surface water off the coast of Ghana. Four chosen areas were found to have non-variable concentrations ranging from 1.14 to 2.79 particles m⁻³ using a self-constructed Low-Tech Aquatic Debris Instrument (LADI) trawl (333 μm mesh). The most abundant shapes were fragments and pellets, while the most common colors were colored and transparent particles. The polymer types found in the microplastics selected for investigation using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy in Attenuated Total Reflectance mode (ATR-FT-IR) were Polypropylene, Polyethylene, and Polystyrene. These results provide an important baseline on microplastic pollution along the Ghanaian coast suggesting the LADI trawl as an accurate quantitative sampling tool for microplastics from sea surface water.

Trindade is a remote island far from 1170 km of the Brazilian coast in the Atlantic Ocean, between South America and South Africa. The island has great biodiversity and scientific studies on the fauna and flora of Trindade are still scarce. Accordingly, since crustacean species of the island are also little known, this research features an unprecedented data set, which provides information on the level of potential toxic elements in two crab species: the Grapsus grapsus (herbivore) and the endemic species Gecarcinus lagostoma (omnivorous) which is in threatened status. Although Trindade has experienced contamination from human activities, mainly plastic debris, the element levels found in the samples suggest that there are no relevant inorganic sources into the island. Since minor and trace elements accumulated by marine invertebrates does not present a pattern behavior, our results can support other studies focused on the impact of global warming to the marine ecosystem.

Underwater volcanic eruptions are a type of natural contamination that affect all marine organisms at a local level. These eruptions usually begin and end a degassing stage of the volcano that, although they do not affect the magnitude of magma emanation, affect organisms to a lesser degree locally, such as cephalopods that due to their metabolism and trophic level, are good bioindicators of contamination. A total of 180 samples of three species of cephalopods were collected for the study: sixty Sepia officinalis, sixty Octopus vulgaris and sixty Loligo vulgaris in the area of the submarine volcano in El Hierro, Tenerife and Lanzarote in the Canary Islands (twenty samples per species in each location), and the metal concentrations (Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Ni, Pb and Zn) in each of the samples were analyzed. All species showed significant differences for all metals in El Hierro compared to Tenerife and Lanzarote. All the analyzed species from El Hierro had higher concentrations of the nine studied metals, this is due to the fact that they were caught near the Tagoro submarine volcano, which at the time was in a state of degassing and discharged many metal-rich compounds.

The increasing level of marine plastic pollution poses severe threats to the marine ecosystem and biodiversity. Open remote sensing data and advanced machine learning (ML) algorithms could be a cost-effective solution for identifying large plastic patches across the scale. The potential application of such resources in detecting and discriminating marine floating plastics (MFP) are not fully explored. Therefore, the present study attempted to explore the full functionality of open Sentinel satellite data and ML models for detecting and classifying the MFP in Mytilene (Greece), Limassol (Cyprus), Skala Loutron, Greece, Calabria (Italy), and Beirut (Lebanon). Two ML models, i.e. Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF), were utilized to perform the classification analysis. In-situ plastic location data was collected from the control experiments conducted in Mytilene, Greece (in 2018 and 2019), Skala Loutron, Greece (2021), and Limassol, Cyprus (2018), and the same was considered for training the models. The accuracy and performances of the trained models were further tested on unseen new data collected from Calabria, Italy and Beirut, Lebanon. Both remote sensing bands and spectral indices were used for developing the ML models. A spectral signature profile for marine plastic was created for discriminating the floating plastic from other marine debris. A newly developed index, kernel Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (kNDVI), was incorporated into the modelling to examine its contribution to model performances. Both SVM and RF were performed well in five models and test case combinations. Among the two ML models, the highest performance was measured for the RF. The inclusion of kNDVI was found effective and increased the model performances, reflected by high balanced accuracy measured for model 2 (~89% to ~100% for SVM and ~92% to ~98% for RF). An automated floating plastic detection system was developed and tested in Calabria and Beirut using the best-performed model. The trained model had detected the floating plastic for both sites with ~80%–90%% accuracy. Among the six predictors, the Floating Debris Index (FDI) was the most important variable for detecting marine floating plastic. These findings collectively suggest that high-resolution remote sensing imagery and the automated ML models can be an effective alternative for the cost-effective detection of MFP. Future research will be directed toward collecting quality training data to develop robust automated models and prepare a spectral library for different plastic objects for discriminating plastic from other marine floating debris and advancing the marine plastic pollution research by taking full advantage of open-source data and technologies.

Oliveira, Vitor H. | Coelho, J.P. | Borgogni, R. | Pereira, M.E. | Figueira, E.
For decades, mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As) were discharged into the Aveiro Lagoon. This study was designed to assess the natural attenuation process evolution by: (1) evaluating Hg and As concentration in sediments and in Halimione portulacoides, and assess the long-term evolution of a historically contaminated salt-marsh system; (2) evaluating the stress levels imposed by Hg and As, and the mechanisms triggered to squash oxidative damage. Concentrations of Hg and As in sediments varied considerably between sampling locations. H. portulacoides did not bioconcentrate Hg and As, restricted translocation to aerial biomass and immobilized contaminants in cell walls. The ions that reached the cytosol induced oxidative stress, restrained by antioxidant mechanisms, especially SOD and CAT activity. Results show that after 25 years of natural attenuation, contamination decreased in the sediment, but remains above non-contaminated systems and continues to induce toxicity in the saltmarsh halophyte community, evidencing the persistent effect of Hg and As contamination.

Fonseca, Vanessa F. | Duarte, Irina A. | Feijão, Eduardo | Matos, Ana Rita | Duarte, Bernardo
Estuaries have long been preferred areas of human settlement, where multiple anthropogenic activities take place, which have contributed to a significant decrease in environmental quality of these ecosystems. Accordingly, environmental monitoring and management have long relied on the development of tools that summarize and simplify complex information and provide direct interpretation of quality status. Here, the fatty acid profiles of three abundant estuarine species, namely Hediste diversicolor, Carcinus maenas and Pomatoschistus microps, were used to develop and validate a multimetric index, based on the Euclidean dissimilarities of profiles between sites, in response to contamination gradient in a large urban estuary. Spatial differences were generally related to unsaturated fatty acids (mono- and polyunsaturated, of the n−3 and n−6 series) in all species, albeit more pronounced in P. microps. Multivariate models returned high classification accuracies for the three sampled sites, varying from 73.3% in the invertebrate species to 100.0% in the fish species. Results show the applicability of the developed FA-based index, particularly due to the easy of communication, for managers and the public alike, but also highlight the need for prior validation on species suitability or sensitivity to depict environmental contamination.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are toxic to marine organisms including the major primary producer phytoplankton, while the toxic mechanisms haven't yet been fully clarified. Therefore, we comprehensively studied the toxic mechanisms of BDE-47 on the marine chlorophyte Chlorella sp., with a focus on the role of cellular oxidative stress. The results indicate that BDE-47 stress resulted in the inhibition of population growth as well as cell death and programmed cell death. The antioxidant system was activated in both low and high BDE-47 treatments, but only microalgal cells in the high BDE-47 treatment showed cellular oxidative stress. By adding ROS inhibitor, the relief of photosynthetic inhibition, Ca²⁺ overproduction and cell death was found. Therefore, we conclude that photosynthetic damage, cell death and cellular oxidative stress were the major mechanisms of BDE-47 toxicity to Chlorella sp., and that cellular oxidative stress played an important role in mediating the other mechanisms.

This review assesses the leachate quality from waste disposal sites in tropical climate zone. Through this review, data from 228 leachate samples from 145 waste disposal sites from 18 countries in the tropical region were analyzed. The 12 types of sites were considered for the analysis based on the climatic conditions, age, and the operating condition of the site. Tropical rainforest, tropical monsoon, and tropical savanna climates were identified for the climatic zone classification. Age of site was classified as young and old. The operating conditions were classified as engineered landfill and open dump site. Eighteen leachate quality parameters were included in the analysis. Leachate pollution index indicated that young sites from tropical rainforest zone and tropical monsoon zone have higher pollution potential, while the pollution potential in tropical savanna zone did not demonstrate considerable difference in pollution potential in terms of age of the landfill. Considering the operating method of the sites, open dumpsites pose higher pollution potential. Positive correlation could be seen among biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solids, and total Kjeldahl nitrogen. pH negatively correlated with organic pollutants as well as heavy metals. Analysis of emerging contaminants present in landfill leachate is limited in tropical region; thus, it is recommended to conduct studies on emerging contaminants. Further, the leachate treatment options considered in tropical region are discussed in this review.

Kang, Bin | Lin, Li | Li, Yuan | Peng, Xin | Sun, Jiachen
China is one of the largest waste importers and producers in the world, with land-based discharges mainly from domestic sewage and industrial wastes being the main source of marine debris (MD) including three distributional types as stranding on the beach (BMD), floating on the water surface (FMD), and submerging into sediments (SMD). Fishery-related activities are also one of the main sources of marine debris: intensive aquaculture, fishing, and related household activities. Marine debris, showing different ways of leaching, degradation and fragmentation, can be ingested, incorporated and accumulated by marine organisms through the food chain, and ultimately pose risks to the ecological environment, economic benefits and human health. Comprehensive countermeasures, from awareness to practices and from the government to the public, are now being implemented in China and have achieved remarkable results especially in domestic waste incineration, but greater commitment and stronger execution are urgently required.
