Magnesium Oxide-Based Absorbents for CO2 Capture at Medium Temperature

MgO-based absorbent has been recognized as a promising CO₂ absorbent at intermediate temperature, though the carbonation performance of pure MgO is poor. Researchers have been devoted to optimize the CO₂ absorption ability via introducing alkali metal carbonates or nitrates. In this paper, the absorption performance of MgO-based absorbents promoted by alkali metal carbonates or modified by alkali metal nitrates has been summarized, and the affecting mechanism has been concluded. Alkali metal nitrates are essential for high absorption ability, and alkali metal carbonates facilitate high-temperature carbonation. Effects of fuel gas conditions and absorbent pelletization are also mentioned for practical applications. H₂O can accelerate the carbonation rate effectively, but the influencing mechanism of H₂O and the CO₂ absorption stability in presence of H₂O was not clearly reported. Further investigations on pelletized MgO-based absorbents modified by alkali metal salts considering regeneration conditions of high CO₂ concentration are proposed based on the recent research findings.

Animal manure is often anaerobically digested for the purpose of producing biogas. The digested manure, namely digestate, can be applied onto farmlands to enhance crop yields as it is abundant in nutrients. However, intensive livestock farming brings about manure exceeding the carrying capacity of lands nearby. Technologies focused on nutrient recovery from digestate have been studied recently, while many problems and challenges still remain unsolved. In this article, these recovery technologies are reviewed and compared, and challenges are deliberated. Ammonia stripping and struvite formation are easily operated technologies in comparison with membrane technologies. Amongst membrane technologies, electrodialysis reversal and forward osmosis are promising due to their high resistance to membrane fouling. Further studies should be focused on the operational cost, disposal of solid and liquid residuals and marketization of the recovered products.

Results of this research focuses on microplastic contents (levels, type, size, colour) in maricultured and natural mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from different Italian stocks. No significant differences were found among maricultured and natural stocks. All recovered MPs are filaments ranging within 750–6000 μm of maximum length (average values 1150–2290 μm). Feeding raw mussel could produce median MP intakes of 6.2–7.2 items/g w.w. Concerning human exposure by diet, both raw and cooked values are important. Some preliminary tests performed in this study evidenced that the cooking process determined lower MPs levels (−14%) in cooked tissues compared to raw ones, MPs were recorded in cooking water and were characterized by a lower size than in raw mussels. Results obtained by this study represent an important baseline on MPs level to evaluate environmental and human exposure risks by diet.

Hydrocarbon contamination is a serious problem that degrades the quality of mangrove ecosystems, and bioremediation using autochthonous bacteria is a promising technology to recover an impacted environment. This research investigates the biodegradation rates of diesel, hexadecane and phenanthrene, by conducting a microcosm study and survey of the autochthonous microbial community in contaminated mangrove sediment, using an Illumina MiSeq platform. The biodegradation rates of diesel, hexadecane and phenanthrene were 82, 86 and 8 mg kg⁻¹ sediment day⁻¹, respectively. The removal efficiencies of hexadecane and phenanthrene were >99%, whereas the removal efficiency of diesel was 88%. A 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequence analysis revealed that the major bacterial assemblages detected were Gammaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria. The bacterial compositions were relatively constant, while reductions of the supplemented hydrocarbons were observed. The results imply that the autochthonous microorganisms in the mangrove sediment were responsible for the degradation of the respective hydrocarbons. Diesel-, hexadecane- and phenanthrene-degrading bacteria, namely Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp., Acinetobacter sp. and Staphylococcus sp., were also isolated from the mangrove sediment. The mangrove sediment provides a potential resource of effective hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria that can be used as an inoculum or further developed as a ready-to-use microbial consortium for the purpose of bioremediation.

The Manila clam is emerging as a relevant species for the Portuguese market. The present work was conducted in the Tagus estuary to evaluate 1) the metals and As content in the sediments of the Tagus estuary, especially on those areas subjected to Manila clam harvesting 2) the metals and As content in clams, and the risk associated with their consumption 3) the physiological and biochemical responses of the clam to metals and As contamination, and its possible role as a pollution bioindicator in the estuarine environment. The most contaminated sediments were identified nearby industrial areas, nevertheless clams collected in low contaminated areas showed high metals and As concentrations. The condition index, glycogen content, membrane oxidative damage, biotransformation enzymes and metallothioneins showed consistent responses to metals and As content in clams. Results emphasize the need for the development of a management plan for the species exploitation in the Tagus estuary.

A microextraction method for the determination of triclosan and methyltriclosan in marine environmental samples was developed. The disperser was first serves as a preliminary extractant for analytes, then as a frozen solvent to remove impurities at −20 °C, and finally as a disperser agent in the microextraction procedure. With the extractants solidified and float on the surface of the aqueous phase at low temperature, a separation was achieved to avoided use of specialized laboratory instruments. The method was optimized using Plackett-Burman design and central composite design as follows: 146 μL octanoic acid as extractant, 793 μL acetoneas disperser, 3.0 min centrifugation and 1.1 min vortex time. The limits of detection were 0.022–0.060 μg L−1 or μg kg−1 and recoveries were 83.3–103.5% for TCS and MTCS in seawater, sediments and seafood. The method has excellent prospects for sample pre-treatment and trace-level analysis of triclosan and methyltriclosan in marine environmental samples.

The impact that microplastics (<5 mm) have on scleractinian coral is largely unknown. This study investigated calcification effects, size limits, and retention times of microbeads and microfibers in two Caribbean species, Montastraea cavernosa and Orbicella faveolata, in a series of three experiments. No calcification effects were seen in the two-day exposure to a microbead concentration of 30 mg L−1. M. cavernosa and O. faveolata actively ingested microbeads ranging in size from 425 μm–2.8 mm, however, a 212–250 μm size class did not elicit a feeding response. The majority of microbeads were expelled within 48 h of ingestion. There was no difference in ingestion or retention times of 425–500 μm microbeads versus 3–5 mm long microfibers. M. cavernosa and O. faveolata have the ability to recognize and reject indigestible material, yet, there is still a need to study effects of energetics and microplastic contamination as a result of ingestion and egestion.

Small fringing marshes are ecologically important habitats often impacted by petroleum. We characterized the phylogenetic structure (16S rRNA) and petroleum hydrocarbon degrading alkane hydroxylase genes (alkB and CYP 153A1) in a sediment microbial community from a New Hampshire fringing marsh, using alkane-exposed dilution cultures to enrich for petroleum degrading bacteria. 16S rRNA and alkB analysis demonstrated that the initial sediment community was dominated by Betaproteobacteria (mainly Comamonadaceae) and Gammaproteobacteria (mainly Pseudomonas), while CYP 153A1 sequences predominantly matched Rhizobiales. 24 h of exposure to n-hexane, gasoline, dodecane, or dilution culture alone reduced functional and phylogenetic diversity, enriching for Gammaproteobacteria, especially Pseudomonas. Gammaproteobacteria continued to dominate for 10 days in the n-hexane and no alkane exposed samples, while dodecane and gasoline exposure selected for gram-positive bacteria. The data demonstrate that small fringing marshes in New England harbor petroleum-degrading bacteria, suggesting that petroleum degradation may be an important fringing marsh ecosystem function.

Sound-sensitive organisms are abundant on coral reefs. Accordingly, experiments suggest that boat noise could elicit adverse effects on coral reef organisms. Yet, there are few data quantifying boat noise prevalence on coral reefs. We use long-term passive acoustic recordings at nine coral reefs and one sandy comparison site in a marine protected area to quantify spatio-temporal variation in boat noise and its effect on the soundscape. Boat noise was most common at reefs with high coral cover and fish density, and temporal patterns reflected patterns of human activity. Boat noise significantly increased low-frequency sound levels at the monitored sites. With boat noise present, the peak frequencies of the natural soundscape shifted from higher frequencies to the lower frequencies frequently used in fish communication. Taken together, the spectral overlap between boat noise and fish communication and the elevated boat detections on reefs with biological densities raises concern for coral reef organisms.

Litter is present in all marine waters around the globe. It consists of several compound classes of which plastic is of special interest because of its high abundance and possible threat to marine organisms. The regional distribution, composition and abundance of large litter items (LI) at the sea floor of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea were investigated based on 175 bottom trawls between 2013 and 2015. Different types of marine litter >2.5cm were classified according to the protocol of the ICES International Bottom Trawl Survey. The results showed considerable geographical variation: In the North Sea, a mean litter abundance of 16.8LI/km² was found, whereas the litter abundance in the Baltic Sea was significantly lower (5.07LI/km²). In general, plastic represented 80% of the litter items. During the study, some methodical aspects with possible impact on the results were identified that need to be addressed in future sampling campaigns.
