Pollution from the paddy fields has posed a threat to surface water quality, and the reactive N in runoff has been recognized as the dominant contributor. In the rice-wheat systems of eastern China, replacing wheat (Triticum aestivum) with Chinese milk vetch (CMV) (Astragalus sinicus) is known to reduce total fertilizer N use and associated N losses during winter; however, the function of the rice-CMV system in controlling the N runoff loss was overlooked during the summer rice-growing season. Over 6 years, we monitored soil mineral N, plant N accumulation, rice grain yield, N agronomic efficiency (AEN), and N runoff in rice-CMV fertilizer N rate-response experiments and made comparisons with the conventional N inputs in rice-wheat rotation. Aboveground CMV residues added 65–116 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹; therefore, by adjusting the fertilizer time, the rice in this system required 44–56% less N fertilizer to produce rice yields equivalent to the 270 kg N ha⁻¹ (district average, C270) used in the rice-wheat system. In all fertilizer N application treatments, 120 kg ha⁻¹ seemed to be the threshold that ensured the soil N supply, the N accumulation at rice critical stages, and consequently, the current level rice yield. The corresponding runoff N averaged 9.3 kg ha⁻¹ season⁻¹, which was 51.8% less than that in C270 (19.3 kg ha⁻¹ season⁻¹). Cumulative N runoff (total N and NH₄⁺-N) correlated strongly with fertilizer N input for any single year (sample size = 108, P < 0.01). Application of 30–120 kg fertilizer N ha⁻¹ gave an equivalent AEN, which indicated that the integration of CMV and fertilizer N could increase the agronomic efficiency of N fertilizer applied to the rice. Rotating paddy rice with CMV instead of wheat, together with the suitable adjustment of N fertilizer, could sustain rice yield and gain the utmost environmental benefits from rice-based agroecosystems.

Predators ingest microplastics directly from the environment and indirectly via trophic transfer, yet studies have not investigated the contribution of each pathway to microplastic ingestion in fish. We assessed the relative importance of the two exposure routes using mysids (Neomysis spp.) and a benthic fish (Myoxocephalus brandti) as a model prey-predator system. We first exposed the mysids to fluorescent polyethylene beads (27–32 μm) at concentrations of 200 and 2000 μg/L. We then exposed the fish to water containing the same concentrations of polyethylene beads or to nine mysids pre-exposed to polyethylene beads. We quantified the size and overall mass of polyethylene beads in mysids and in fish to assess polyethylene beads fragmentation by the mysids. Mysids ingested 2–3 more polyethylene beads from water containing the higher concentration, and fish ingested 3–11 times more polyethylene beads via trophic transfer than from the water column. The percentage of fragmented particles was higher in mysids and in fish fed bead-exposed mysids, suggesting that the mysids can fragment polyethylene beads. Our experiments demonstrate that trophic transfer is a major route of microplastic ingestion by fish and that prey such as mysids can fragment microplastics. Small particles can translocate from the digestive system into tissues and exert adverse physiological effects. Trophic transfer of microplastics may therefore pose more serious threats to organisms at higher trophic levels.

Numerous genetic markers for microbial source tracking (MST) have been evaluated by testing a panel of target and nontarget faecal samples. However, the performance of MST markers may vary between faecal and water samples, thereby resulting in inaccurate water quality assessment. In this study, a 30-day sampling study was conducted in an urban river impacted by human- and sewage-associated pollution to evaluate the performance of different human-associated markers in environmental water. Additionally, marker decay was assessed via a microcosms approach. Overall, Bacteroidales 16sRNA and crAssphage markers exhibited higher prevalence in the study area, and their detection frequencies exceeded 90%. In contrast, Bacteroidales protein markers exhibited poor detection frequencies compared to other markers, with the prevalence of Hum2 and Hum163 reaching only 63% and 84%, respectively. Regarding marker abundance, there was no significant difference in the detection concentrations between Bacteroidales 16sRNA and crAssphage markers (p > 0.05); however, the concentrations of Bacteroidales protein markers were nearly 1 order of magnitude lower than those of other MST markers. The microcosm experiments indicated that the decay rate of crAssphage markers was significantly lower than that of other bacterial target markers, which may improve their detectability when the pollution source is located far from the sampling site. Due to the observed differences in performance and decay patterns among Bacteroidales 16sRNA, crAssphage, and Bacteroidales protein markers, we recommend the simultaneous use of multiple markers from different target microorganisms to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the pollution sources. This approach would also provide an accurate assessment of pollution levels and health risks.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), an artificial perfluorinated compound, has been associated with male reproductive disorders. Histone modifications are important epigenetic mediators; however, the impact of PFOS exposure on testicular steroidogenesis through histone modification regulations remains to be elucidated. In this study, we examined the roles of histone modifications in regulating steroid hormone production in male rats chronically exposed to low-level PFOS. The results indicate that PFOS exposure significantly up-regulated the expressions of StAR, CYP11A1 and 3β-HSD, while CYP17A1 and 17β-HSD were down-regulated, thus contributing to the elevated progesterone and testosterone levels. Furthermore, PFOS significantly increased the histones H3K9me2, H3K9ac and H3K18ac while reduced H3K9me3 in rat testis. It is known that histone modifications are closely involved in gene transcription. Therefore, to investigate the association between histone modifications and steroidogenic gene regulation, the levels of these histone marks were further measured in steroidogenic gene promoter regions by ChIP. It was found that H3K18ac was augmented in Cyp11a1 promoter, and H3K9ac was increased in Hsd3b after PFOS exposure, which is proposed to result in the activation of CYP11A1 and 3β-HSD, respectively. To sum up, chronic low-level PFOS exposure activated key steroidogenic gene expression through enhancing histone acetylation (H3K9ac and H3K18ac), ultimately stimulating steroid hormone biosynthesis in rat testis.

Fe-based nanoparticles (Fe-based NPs) have great potential as a substitute for traditional Fe-fertilizer; however, their environmental risk and impact on plant growth are not fully understood. In this study, we compared the physiological impacts of three different Fe-based NP formulations: zero-valent iron (ZVI), Fe₃O₄ and Fe₂O₃ NPs, on hydroponic rice after root exposure for 2 weeks. Fe-normal (Fe(+)) and Fe-deficiency (Fe(−)) conditions were compared. Results showed that low dose (50 mg L⁻¹) of ZVI and Fe₃O₄ NPs improved the rice growth under Fe(−) condition, while Fe₂O₃ NPs did not improve plant growth and caused phytotoxicity at high concentration (500 mg L⁻¹). Under Fe(+) conditions, none of the Fe-based NPs exhibited positive effects on the rice plants with plant growth actually being inhibited at 500 mg L⁻¹ evidenced by reduced root volume and leaf biomass and enhanced oxidative stress in plant. Under Fe(−) condition, low dose (50 mg L⁻¹) of ZVI NPs and Fe₃O₄ NPs increased the chlorophyll content by 30.7% and 26.9%, respectively. They also alleviated plant stress demonstrated by the reduced oxidative stress and decreased concentrations of stress related phytohormones such as gibberellin and indole-3-acetic acid. Low dose of ZVI and Fe₃O₄ NPs treatments resulted in higher Fe accumulation in plants compared to Fe₂O₃ NPs treatment, by down-regulating the expression of IRT1 and YSL15. This study provides significant insights into the physiological impacts of Fe-based NPs in rice plants and their potential application in agriculture. ZVI and Fe₃O₄ NPs can be used as Fe-fertilizers to improve rice growth under Fe-deficient condition, which exist in many rice-growing regions of the world. However, dose should be carefully chosen as high dose (500 mg L⁻¹ in this study) of the Fe-based NPs can impair rice growth.

Environmental exposures are one of the greatest threats to human health, yet we lack tools to answer simple questions about our exposures: what are our personal exposure profiles and how do they change overtime (external exposome), how toxic are these chemicals, and what are the sources of these exposures? To capture variation in personal exposures to airborne chemicals in the gas and particulate phases and identify exposures which pose the greatest health risk, wearable exposure monitors can be deployed. In this study, we deployed passive air sampler wristbands with 84 healthy participants (aged 60–69 years) as part of the Biomarkers for Air Pollutants Exposure (China BAPE) study. Participants wore the wristband samplers for 3 days each month for five consecutive months. Passive samplers were analyzed using a novel gas chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry data-processing workflow to overcome the bottleneck of processing large datasets and improve confidence in the resulting identified features. The toxicity of chemicals observed frequently in personal exposures were predicted to identify exposures of potential concern via inhalation route or other routes of airborne contaminant exposure. Three exposures were highlighted based on elevated toxicity: dichlorvos from insecticides (mosquito/malaria control), naphthalene partly from mothballs, and 183 polyaromatic hydrocarbons from multiple sources. Other exposures explored in this study are linked to diet and personal care products, cigarette smoke, sunscreen, and antimicrobial soaps. We highlight the potential for this workflow employing wearable passive samplers for prioritizing chemicals of concern at both the community and individual level, and characterizing sources of exposures for follow up interventions.

C₆₀ fullerene (C₆₀) is a nano-pollutant that can damage the respiratory system. Eugenol exhibits significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. We aimed to investigate the time course of C₆₀ emulsion-induced pulmonary and spermatic harms, as well as the effect of eugenol on C₆₀ emulsion toxicity. The first group of mice (protocol 1) received intratracheally C₆₀ emulsion (1.0 mg/kg BW) or vehicle and were tested at 12, 24, 72 and 96 h (F groups) thereafter. The second group of mice (protocol 2) received intratracheally C₆₀ emulsion or vehicle, 1 h later were gavaged with eugenol (150 mg/kg) or vehicle, and experiments were done 24 h after instillation. Lung mechanics, morphology, redox markers, cytokines and epididymal spermatozoa were analyzed. Protocol 1: Tissue damping (G) and elastance (H) were significantly higher in F24 than in others groups, except for H in F72. Morphological and inflammatory parameters were worst at 24 h and subsequently declined until 96 h, whereas redox and spermatic parameters worsened over the whole period. Eugenol eliminated the increase in G, H, cellularity, and cytokines, attenuated oxidative stress induced by C60 exposure, but had no effect on sperm. Hence, exposure to C₆₀ emulsion deteriorated lung morphofunctional, redox and inflammatory characteristics and increased the risk of infertility. Furthermore, eugenol avoided those changes, but did not prevent sperm damage.

The identification of nitrate (NO₃⁻) sources and biogeochemical transformations is critical for understanding the different nitrogen (N) pathways, and thus, for controlling diffuse pollution in groundwater affected by livestock and agricultural activities. This study combines chemical data, including environmental isotopes (δ²HH₂O, δ¹⁸OH₂O, δ¹⁵NNO₃, and δ¹⁸ONO₃), with land use/land cover data and a Bayesian isotope mixing model, with the aim of reducing the uncertainty when estimating the contributions of different pollution sources. Sampling was taken from 53 groundwater sites in Comarca Lagunera, northern Mexico, during 2018. The results revealed that the NO₃⁻ (as N) concentration ranged from 0.01 to 109 mg/L, with more than 32% of the sites exceeding the safe limit for drinking water quality established by the World Health Organization (10 mg/L). Moreover, according to the groundwater flow path, different biogeochemical transformations were observed throughout the study area: microbial nitrification was dominant in the groundwater recharge areas with elevated NO₃⁻ concentrations; in the transition zones a mixing of different transformations, such as nitrification, denitrification, and/or volatilization, were identified, associated to moderate NO₃⁻ concentrations; whereas in the discharge area the main process affecting NO₃⁻ concentrations was denitrification, resulting in low NO₃⁻ concentrations. The results of the MixSIAR isotope mixing model revealed that the application of manure from concentrated animal-feeding operations (∼48%) and urban sewage (∼43%) were the primary contributors of NO₃⁻ pollution, whereas synthetic fertilizers (∼5%), soil organic nitrogen (∼4%), and atmospheric deposition played a less important role. Finally, an estimation of an uncertainty index (UI90) of the isotope mixing results indicated that the uncertainties associated with atmospheric deposition and NO₃⁻−fertilizers were the lowest (0.05 and 0.07, respectively), while those associated with manure and sewage were the highest (0.24 and 0.20, respectively).

The development of urbanised areas together with the growing transport infrastructure and traffic volume are the main cause of air quality deterioration due to the increasing concentrations of particulate matter. Dust pollution is a threat to human health. It can cause the development of lung, larynx or circulatory system cancer. Due to the ability to accumulate dust particles on the leaf surface, the contribution of trees in the process of phytoremediation of air pollution has started to be appreciated. An analysis of the elemental composition of particulate matter (PM) stored on the leaves surface was also carried out, which showed high average concentration of: C > O > Si > Fe (above 8wt.%). It was also observed single particles with a high concentration of heavy metals: Ti, Mn, Ba, Zn, Cr, Pb, Sn, Ni and REE (rare earth elements). The major origin of PM are vehicular emissions, soil and re-suspended road dust. This paper presents also a comparison of selected tree, shrub and vine species differing in their ability to accumulate particulate matter. It was experimentally determined the average leaf surface of individual plant species and established the amount of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter between 10 and 100 μm, 2.5 and 10 μm, and 0.2 and 2.5 μm deposited on the leaf surface and in waxes.Some species of vines (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), shrubs (Forsythia x intermediata) and coniferous trees, such as Betula pendula ‘Youngii’, Quercus rubra, Cratageus monogyna, Acer pseduoplatanus, Tilia cordata Mill. or Platanus orientalis turned out to be the most efficient in the process of phylloremediation.

Organic fraction municipal solid waste (OFMSW) has a high potential for energy and value-added product recovery due to its carbon- and nutrient-rich composition; however, traditional value chains have treated OFMSW as an undesired by-product. This study focuses on value chain optimisation to assist the transition to resource recovery value chains. To achieve this, this work combined two stage stochastic mathematical optimisation with geographical spatial analysis and time series waste generation analysis. Existing infrastructure in England, including anaerobic digestion plants and road transportation networks, were included in the model. To account for uncertainty in waste generation, multiple scenarios and their associated probabilities were developed based on environmental variables. The optimisation problem was solved to further advance the understanding of economically optimal waste-to-resource value chains under waste generation variability. The pertinent decision variables included sizing, technology selection, waste flows and location of thermochemical treatment sites. The model highlights the potential reduction in system profitability as a result of different operating constraints, such as minimum plant operating capacity factors and landfill taxation. The latter was shown to have the largest impact on profitability as overconservative systems designs were implemented to hedge against the waste variability. Such computer-aided models offer opportunities to overcome the challenges posed by waste generation variability and waste to resource value chain transformation.
