Assessment of the benthic ecological status in the adjacent waters of Yangtze River Estuary using marine biotic indices

The adjacent waters of the Yangtze River Estuary are influenced by heavy anthropogenic activities. The benthic ecological status was assessed using the Shannon–Wiener diversity index, the AZTI Marine Biotic Index (AMBI), and the multivariate AMBI (M-AMBI) based on macrofaunal data collected in this area at 51 sites in June 2013 and June 2014. In total, 321 species of macrofauna were identified. Polychaetes were the most dominant, followed by mollusks and crustaceans. The AMBI results showed that 72.55% of the sites were under slight disturbance with a decreasing disturbance trend from inshore to offshore. M-AMBI showed that most of the sites were under lower disturbance level than those shown by AMBI. The Shannon–Wiener diversity index showed that only two sites, near the Yangtze River Estuary and the Zhoushan Islands, respectively, were under moderate status. Other sites were under good or high status, which is consistent with the M-AMBI results.

Spatiotemporal variations of dissolved nutrients were studied along Gautami-Godavari mangrove ecosystem to delineate their sources and fate. Average values of nitrate (NO3−), dissolved silica (DSi) and phosphate (PO43−) is 2.09 mg/l, 12.7 mg/l and 0.16 mg/l in wet season and 0.47 mg/l, 6.96 mg/l and 0.29 mg/l in dry season respectively. In wet season river discharge has significant influence on NO3− and DSi. In dry season, NO3− and PO43− are controlled by groundwater discharge, benthic exchange and various in situ processes owing to sediment redox condition. Mixing model shows net addition of phosphate in Coringa mangroves (95%) and Lower estuary (13%) and net removal of nitrate (24.79%) in Coringa mangrove and in estuary (58.9%). Thus present mangrove acts as net source for phosphate and net sink for nitrate and DSi. Nutrient ratio shows seasonal switching between potential Phosphorus and Nitrogen limitation in wet and dry season respectively.

Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), n-alkanes, petroleum-related biomarkers of terpanes and steranes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in the intertidal sediments in the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia/New Brunswick, Canada. Sites close to the harbour and more densely populated areas had higher TPH levels than other pristine areas. n-Alkanes presented a typical single bell-shape in n-C₁₆ to n-C₃₅ range and an obvious odd to even carbon preference. Most sites had trace amounts of petroleum biomarkers. Abundant non-alkylated PAHs and lower amounts of alkylated PAHs represented the major input of the incomplete combustion of solid (e.g., coal, coke, biomass, and coal tar) and liquid fuels. The toxicity estimation for PAHs indicates that they did not have potential toxicity to benthic organisms at most sampling sites. However, possible to probable negative effects from the measured PAH concentrations were found for the two samples from Courtenay Bay and Saint Andrews.

Recent studies have demonstrated the negative impacts of microplastics on wildlife. Therefore, the presence of microplastics in marine species for human consumption and the high intake of seafood (fish and shellfish) in some countries cause concern about the potential effects of microplastics on human health. In this brief review, the evidence of seafood contamination by microplastics is reviewed, and the potential consequences of the presence of microplastics in the marine environment for human food security, food safety and health are discussed. Furthermore, challenges and gaps in knowledge are identified. The knowledge on the adverse effects on human health due to the consumption of marine organisms containing microplastics is very limited, difficult to assess and still controversial. Thus, assessment of the risk posed to humans is challenging. Research is urgently needed, especially regarding the potential exposure and associated health risk to micro- and nano-sized plastics.

Plastic preproduction pellets are found in environmental samples all over the world and their presence is often linked to spills during production and transportation. To better understand how these pellets end up in the environment we assessed the release of plastic pellets from a polyethylene production site in a case study area on the Swedish west coast. The case study encompasses; field measurements to evaluate the level of pollution and pathways, models and drifters to investigate the potential spread and a revision of the legal framework and the company permits. This case study show that millions of pellets are released from the production site annually but also that there are national and international legal frameworks that if implemented could help prevent these spills. Bearing in mind the negative effects observed by plastic pollution there is an urgent need to increase the responsibility and accountability of these spills.

Identification of contamination in estuarine ecosystems that are impacted by anthropogenic pressures, such as the Seine estuary, is difficult to determine without considering the role environmental variation plays on the end points selected. Currently, there is interest in identifying methods in which the influence of confounding factors can be described and accounted for. In this context, the aim of this study was to define a baseline assessment criteria (BAC) for enzymatic biomarkers in ragworms (Hediste diversicolor) collected in a reference site (Authie). The model took into consideration the weight, temperature and salinity of the site. Values collected in the Seine estuary were analyzed with the model to determine if differences between the sites could potentially be due to contamination or were explained by environmental variation. In general, biomarker responses from the Seine estuary fell within the range of BAC, suggesting that environmental variation could explain some of the results.

Coastal ecosystem structures and functions are changing under natural and anthropogenic influences. In this study, surface sediment samples were collected from disturbed zone (DZ), near estuary zone (NEZ), and far estuary zone (FEZ) of Hangzhou Bay, one of the most seriously polluted bays in China. The bacterial community structures and predicted functions varied significantly in different zones. Firmicutes were found most abundantly in DZ, highlighting the impacts of anthropogenic activities. Sediment total phosphorus was most influential on the bacterial community structures. Predicted by PICRUSt analysis, DZ significantly exceeded FEZ and NEZ in the subcategory of Xenobiotics Biodegradation and Metabolism; and DZ enriched all the nitrate reduction related genes, except nrfA gene. Seawater salinity and inorganic nitrogen, respectively as the representative natural and anthropogenic factor, performed exact-oppositely in nitrogen metabolism functions. The changes of bacterial community compositions and predicted functions provide a new insight into human-induced pollution impacts on coastal ecosystem.

Microbial communities are ecologically important in aquatic environments and impacts on microbes have the potential to affect a number of functional processes. We have amended seawater with a crude oil and assessed changes in species composition as well as a measure of functional diversity (the ability of the community to utilise different carbon sources) and the community level metabolic signature. We found that there was a degree of functional redundancy in the community we tested. Oiled assemblages became less diverse and more dominated by specialist hydrocarbon degraders, carbon source utilisation increased initially but there was no change in metabolic signature in this small scale laboratory experiment. This study supports the decision framework around management of oil spills. This package of methods has the potential to be used in the testing and selection of new dispersants for use in oil spill response.

The vertical pattern of pelagic ciliate communities was observed at eight layers in the Chukchi Sea and the northern Bering Sea of the western Arctic Ocean during the summer sea-ice reduction period (August 5 to August 24, 2016). A total of 44 ciliate species were identified, with seven species dominated the communities in the water column. Multivariate and univariate analyses demonstrated that: (1) community structures of ciliates vary significantly among eight water depths; (2) variations in the vertical distribution of ciliates were significantly correlated with changes in physicochemical variables, especially the ammonia; (3) the distributions of the three dominant species were significantly and positively related to the chlorophyll a and ammonia concentrations; and (4) species richness and abundance were significantly and positively correlated with the concentrations of ammonia and chlorophyll a. These results suggest that pelagic ciliates may reflect vertical variations in the water quality status of western Arctic ecosystems.

Total mercury concentrations ([THg]) were determined in muscle and liver of the bat ray (Myliobatis californica), shovelnose guitarfish (Pseudobatos productus) and banded guitarfish (Zapteryx exasperata). Generalized linear models (GLM) were used to determine the effects of size and sex in [THg] and showed that both are determinants of [THg] in these species. The [THg] in both tissues significantly increased with length especially in sexually mature organisms with a steeper slope for mature male than mature female. This may relate to elasmobranchs sexual dimorphism driven variation in growth rates. Median muscle [THg] was significantly greater than liver in each ray species but there were some individuals with higher liver [THg] than muscle. There were individuals with muscle [THg] higher than the advisory thresholds of 0.2 and 0.5mgkg−1ww (2.4 and 11% of the bat ray; 2.1 and 10% of the shovelnose guitarfish; 12.6 and 45% of the banded guitarfish, respectively).
