Migration histories and perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA) loads in an estuarine fish: A novel union of analyses to understand variation in contaminant concentrations النص الكامل

Previous studies have shown that accumulation of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in the tissues of aquatic species is highly variable. Movement and migration patterns in these species represent an important consideration when evaluating contaminant accumulation in exposed biota, and may have a large influence on the risk profiles for migratory seafood species. In this study, relationships between PFAA concentrations in muscle and liver tissue, and recent fish migration history (inferred from metals profiles in fish otoliths, otherwise known as otolith chemistry) were evaluated in Sea Mullet (Mugil cephalus). A greater number of PFAAs, and higher concentrations, were found in liver compared to muscle tissue. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was present in highest concentrations in both muscle and liver tissues, and there was strong correlation in concentrations between these two tissues. PFOS was found to decrease and increase alongside recent strontium and barium concentrations (respectively) in the otolith, suggesting higher concentrations of PFAAs in fish recently exposed to comparatively lower salinity environments. This study highlights how otolith chemistry can be employed to examine links between contaminant concentrations in fish, and their recent migration history. This approach shows promise for studying contaminant residues in mobile seafood species within the natural environment.

Agricultural activities often lead to nutrient enrichment and habitat modification in rivers, possibly altering macroinvertebrate assemblages and hence ecosystem functioning. For the sake of environmental management and conservation, therefore, assessing the impacts of agricultural activities becomes indispensable, especially when these activities are predicted to be intensified in the future. In this study, the plain river network in the Lake Chaohu Basin was chosen to examine how agricultural activities influence the functioning of rivers by assessing land use, water quality, habitat condition and macroinvertebrate assemblages, followed by calculating the macroinvertebrate-based multimetric index (MMI) to indicate overall ecosystem health of the rivers. We found that agricultural activities lowered the diversity of macroinvertebrates (e.g. total number of taxa and Simpson index) primarily due to elevated ammonium concentrations in water and reduced microhabitat types, thereby impairing the habitat integrity and nutrient cycling of rivers. The macroinvertebrate-based MMI was positively correlated with increasing habitat quality but negatively with increasing nutrient concentrations, suggesting its high reliability for indicating the impacts of agricultural activities, which was further substantiated by classification and regression tree (CART) analysis. We recommend analyzing macroinvertebrate assemblages using both multivariate and multimetric approaches to offer a more comprehensive evaluation of the impacts of agricultural activities on ecosystem health. Some environmental (CODMₙ, NH₄⁺-N and PO₄³⁻-P) and biological parameters (total number of taxa), however, can be used as good proxies for MMI, when time and resources for gathering information to develop MMI are limited.

Aquaculture activities in southern Chile demand floating devices to produce electricity powered by diesel generators. It has been recently proposed to replace this fuel with propane. However, little is known about the behaviour and possible environmental impacts of an accidental release of propane underwater. In this study we evaluated the impact of water temperature and salinity on the saturation and further release of propane under controlled laboratory experiments. Results showed that under extreme environmentally relevant scenarios (high and low temperature and salinity), propane saturated the water more quickly. However, while it is important to consider that saturation times can be similar (∼2 h), the magnitudes of propane dissolved can be different. Experiments showed that cold waters (5 °C) propane is dissolved twice than warm waters (20 °C). Residence time was more affected by water temperature and almost independent of water salinity. Propane may take at least 2 days to be released from waters (around 90% of the initial amount dissolved under laboratory conditions).Additionally, we evaluated the impact on dissolved oxygen displacement and the embryotoxicity of the dissolved fraction by using Zebrafish Embryo Toxicity Assay. Results showed that dissolved oxygen was quickly removed. However, the levels of dissolved oxygen were promptly recovered in the studied systems. We also observed that propane can generate genotoxic effects (3–10% mortality), but after 2 days the system can be almost free of propane and the effects may become much lower. Comparatively with the literature, propane showed to be less toxic than diesel and it is a viable and less environmentally hazardous replacement for diesel.

Mercury (Hg) pollution in the ocean is an issue of global concern, however bioaccumulation regimes of this ubiquitous pollutant in marine apex predators have important knowledge gaps. Our fish length and stable isotope (δ¹⁵N and δ¹³C) normalized data of Greenland halibut (GH) (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) showed that Hg bioaccumulation in fillet tissue decreased by ~35–50 %, over a ten-year period from 2006 to 2015 (n = 7 individual sampling years). Hg was predominantly in the methylmercury form (>77 %). Results from a Bayesian information theoretic model showed that GH Hg concentrations decreased with time and its associated declines in Hg air emissions, estimated trophic position, and a potentially lower degree of demersal prey use as indicated by temporal trend shifts in nitrogen (δ¹⁵N) and carbon (δ¹³C) stable isotope values. GH trophic shifts accounted for about one third of the observed temporal reduction in Hg. Our study demonstrates the importance of simultaneously considering Hg emissions, food web dynamics and trophic shifts as important drivers of Hg bioaccumulation in a marine, deep water fish species and highlights the effectiveness of Hg regulations on ocean apex predator Hg concentrations and overall seafood safety.

Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and glyphosate (GLY) have been classified as a Group 2B and Group 2A carcinogens for humans, respectively, and frequently found in aquatic ecosystems. However, data on the potential hazard of MC-LR and GLY exposure to the fish gut are relatively scarce. In the current study, a subacute toxicity test of zebrafish exposed to MC-LR (35 μg L⁻¹) and GLY (3.5 mg L⁻¹), either alone or in combination was performed for 21 d. The results showed that MC-LR or/and GLY treatment reduced the mRNA levels of tight junction genes (claudin-5, occludin, and zonula occludens-1) and altered the levels of diamine oxidase and D-lactic, indicating increased intestinal permeability in zebrafish. Furthermore, MC-LR and/or GLY treatment remarkably increased the levels of intestinal IL-1β and IL-8 but decreased the levels of IL-10 and TGF-β, indicating that MC-LR and/or GLY exposure induced an inflammatory response in the fish gut. MC-LR and/or GLY exposure also activated superoxide dismutase and catalase, generally upregulated the levels of p53, bax, bcl-2, caspase-3, and caspase-9, downregulated the levels of caspase-8 and caused notable histological injury in the fish gut. Moreover, MC-LR and/or GLY exposure also significantly altered the microbial community in the zebrafish gut and the expression of miRNAs (miR-146a, miR-155, miR-16, miR-21, and miR-223). Chronic exposure to MC-LR and/or GLY can induce intestinal damage in zebrafish, and this study is the first to demonstrate an altered gut microbiome and miRNAs in the zebrafish gut after MC-LR and GLY exposure.

Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) analysis is usually applied in pollution assessment by checking for toxic or harmful volatile compounds in air, water and soil samples. In this study, exogenous VOCs and their derivatives, metabolized by cells, were valued into specific body fluids. In particular, the VOC profiles of blood, urine and human semen samples collected from young men living in two high pollution areas in Italy, i.e. Land of Fires and Valley of Sacco River, were fingerprinted. The analysis is based on Headspace Solid Phase MicroExtraction (HS-SPME) followed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometric detection (GC-MS). The volatile composition of the three body fluids showed that some VOCs are in common between blood, urine and human semen samples, whereas others are present only in a body fluid. Some compounds, as well as also some chemical classes show a higher affinity for a specific body fluid. Statistical analysis allowed to discriminate the two contaminated areas and identify those compounds which significantly contribute to the two areas classification. Some of these compounds are toxic and found prevalently in Valley of Sacco River samples, correspondingly to sperm analysis results for young men living in this zona worse than those living in Land of Fires.

The present study is a literature-based analysis investigating occurrence and the possible consequences of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in marine protected areas (MPAs) of Latin America and Caribbean. The approach using overlapping of georeferenced MPA polygons with data compiled from peer-reviewed literature, published during the last 15 years, showed 341 records of PAH in 9 countries. PAH was reported to occur within the boundaries of 36 MPAs located in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua and Uruguay. According to quality guidelines, low to moderate impacts are expected in MPAs categorized in different management classes. Considering sediment samples, 13% of the records presented concentrations enough to cause occasional toxicity. Such level of risk was also seen in Ramsar sites and in Amazonian MPAs. In addition, based on concentrations reported in biota, occasional deleterious effects on organisms from Biosphere Reserves might occur. Diagnostic ratios pointed out petrogenic and pyrolytic processes as PAH predominant sources, and were mainly attributed to the proximity to ports, industries and urban areas. MPAs located in the vicinity of impact-generating areas may be under threat and require government attention and action, mainly through implementation of contamination monitoring programs.

Contamination of waters and soils with microplastics (MPs) is an emerging environmental issue worldwide. MPs constitute a cocktail of various additives and polymers besides adsorbing toxic heavy metals from the environment. This co-occurrence of MPs with heavy metals poses a threat to the health of organisms and is poorly understood. Ingestion of MPs contaminated with heavy metals may also result in subsequent transfer of heavy metals up in the food chain. MPs surfaces play a crucial role in the adsorption of heavy metals. Aged/biofouled MPs facilitate greater adsorption of metals and certain microplastic (MP) polymers adsorb some metals more specifically. External factors involved in the process of adsorption/accumulation of heavy metals are the solution pH, salinity, and the concentration of relevant heavy metals in the media. Desorption greatly depends upon pH of the external solution. This is more concerning as the guts/digestive systems of organisms have low pH which could enhance the desorption of toxic metals and making them accumulate in their bodies. The aim of this article is to discuss the abundance, distribution, adsorption, and desorption behavior of MPs for heavy metals, and their combined toxic effects on flora and fauna based on the limited research on this topic in the literature. There is an overarching need to understand the interactions of MPs with heavy metals in different ecosystems so that the extent of ecotoxic effects they pose could be assessed which would help in the environmental regulation of these pollutants.

People use a particulate respirator in order to reduce exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅). Acute exposure to PM₂.₅ is known to increase blood pressure. However, systematic reviews or meta-analyses on blood pressure-related benefits of using a particulate respirator is lacking. Therefore, we reviewed randomized crossover intervention studies on blood pressure-related effects of particulate matter respirator use. We conducted a literature review of articles found on Embase, Medline, and Cochrane library on August 31, 2020. The study outcomes were systolic and diastolic blood pressure and mean arterial pressure. A random-effect model was used in the meta-analysis. Subgroup analyses, based on age (adult < 60 years, elderly ≥ 60 years), personal PM₂.₅ exposure levels (High: ≥ 25 μg/m³, Low: < 25 μg/m³), and types of monitoring methods (ambulatory and resting blood pressure) were conducted. We identified 297 references, and seven studies were included in our systematic review. None of the studies used a sham respirator as control and complete allocation concealment and blinding were impossible. The use of a particulate respirator was associated with a −1.23 mmHg (95% confidence interval (CI): −2.53, 0.07) change in systolic blood pressure and a −1.57 mmHg (95% CI: −3.85, 0.71) change in mean arterial pressure. There were significant heterogeneities and possibilities for publication bias. The subgroup analyses revealed that studies involving elderly individuals, those conducted in high PM₂.₅ personal exposure, and those in which resting blood pressure was monitored demonstrated a larger decrease in blood pressure resulting from respirator use. Further intervention studies with a large sample size and subjects with diverse characteristics and different personal PM₂.₅ levels may add the evidence to current literature.

Mercury (Hg), as a global pollutant, its contamination has been documented in environmental compartments of the Himalayan region. However, little research exists regarding to Hg accumulation in terrestrial wildlife, as well as its driving factors. In this study, surface soil and small mammals were collected in the Lebu Valley, East Himalayas of China, in order to measure the uptake of the long-distance transported Hg along an elevational gradient approximately from 2300 to 5000 m a.s.l. The soil Hg concentrations were measured and predicted mostly by vegetation type as well as soil organic matter, while the Hg in hair of small mammals (Muridae and Cricetidae) showed deeply influenced by soil Hg. Notably, combined with the field survey data, soil and hair Hg were both enhanced in low and mid-elevations, which overlapped the distribution ranges of a majority of mammals. Overall, this indicates that Hg contamination in low- and mid-elevations poses a potential threat to the top predators that consuming small mammals directly or indirectly. Furthermore, our data advances the understanding of Hg dynamics in remote, high mountain ecosystems and provides baseline data for biomonitoring for reduction of Hg emission globally.
