It is believed that nanoemulsions were emerged as a promising candidate to improve the qualities of natural essential oil towards antimicrobial and insecticidal applications. In the present study, we have focused on the encapsulation of Vitex negundo L. leaf essential oil using Polysorbate80 for its different biological activities including antioxidant, bactericidal and larvicidal activity against dengue fever vector Aedes aegypti L. Initially, the nanoemulsion was prepared by low energy method and droplet size of the formulated nanoemulsion was characterized by using Dynamic Light Scattering analysis. The freshly prepared V. negundo essential nanoemulsion was observed with the mean droplet size of below 200 nm indicating its excellent stability. Further, the larvicidal activity of essential oil and nanoemulsion with various concentrations (25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 ppm). The larvicidal activities were tested 2nd and 3rd instar larval mortality rate that was observed against the 12 and 24 h exposure period. After a 12 h exposure period, the larvicidal activities of 2nd instar larva were observed as essential oil (73.33 ± 1.88), nanoemulsion (81.00 ± 0.88) and the larvicidal activities of 3rd instar larva were displayed essential oil (70.33 ± 2.60) and nanoemulsion (79.00 ± 3.70). Likewise, after a 24 h exposure period, the larvicidal activities of 2nd instar larva were observed as essential oil (90.30 ± 2.15), nanoemulsion (94.33 ± 1.20) and the larvicidal activities of 3rd instar larva were essential oil (80.66 ± 0.66) and nanoemulsion (93.00 ± 1.25) respectively. We finally concluded that the developed plant-based emulsion essential oil systems were thermodynamically stable. Owing to its improved bioavailability and biocompatibility, formulated nanoemulsion can be used in various biomedical applications including drug delivery as well as disease transmitting mosquito vector control. The presence of antibiotics in the environment has attracted considerable attention due to their toxicity. In this study, agricultural waste corn bracts (CBs) modified by zirconium cations were utilized to remove levofloxacin (LEV) from wastewater. Zr-modified CBs exhibited a strong adsorption capacity (Qₘₐₓ = 73 mg/g), and their desorption rate could reach 89% by simply adjusting the pH to 11. FTIR and XPS analyses indicated that the mechanism of LEV adsorption included the complexation between the ketone/carboxyl groups of LEV and the Zr atoms and the π-π electron-donor-acceptor interaction. Zr-modified CBs are economic, effective and nontoxic adsorbents. This material not only removes antibiotics from wastewater but also enables recycling and reuse of agricultural waste.

A survey was conducted in a freshwater reservoir located in Guizhou province, south China, to investigate the influence of fish aquaculture activities on mercury (Hg) distribution, speciation change, and bioaccumulation. Water, sediment, and aquaculture fish samples were collected from aquaculture sites (AS) and the corresponding reference sites (RS). The results showed that total mercury (THg) concentration in overlying water in Wujiangdu reservoir reached 6.87 ± 14.9 ng L⁻¹. THg concentration in a different layer follows the sequence: surface layer > bottom layer > three intermediate layers with significant difference. In addition, the total methylmercury (TMeHg) concentration in overlying water was 0.113 ± 0.211 ng L⁻¹. The highest TMeHg was observed in the bottom layer. Both dissolved Hg (DHg) and dissolved methylmercury (DMeHg) accounted for more than 50% of THg and TMeHg in the top four layers of overlying water, respectively. In contrast, particulate Hg (PHg) and particulate methylmercury were the major portion of THg and TMeHg in bottom layer and reached to 67 and 58.7% of THg and TMeHg, respectively. Aquaculture activities were estimated to contribute an annual loading of approximately 69.8 ng g⁻¹of THg yearly in the top 1 cm of sediment underneath the rafts due to unconsumed fish feed. The extra loading of THg in sediment may have potential to stimulate the release of Hg to the overlying water. Both DMeHg and DHg in sediment pore water and organic matter (OM) contents in the top 4 cm of AS were noticeably higher than RS, which indicated that the accumulation of OM due to aquaculture activities promoted MeHg production in the top surface of sediment pore water. No significant difference was noted between THg in RS (296 ± 104 ng g⁻¹) and AS (274 ± 132 ng g⁻¹) in the solid phase. In addition, the sediments were net sources of both MeHg and inorganic Hg. For Hg in fish tissues, THg and inorganic Hg (IHg) in the liver were significantly higher (THg: p < 0.001, F = 9.98; IHg: p < 0.001, F = 13.1) than those in the other organs. In contrast, MeHg concentration in the muscle was significantly higher than (p < 0.01, F = 4.83) that in the other organs.

The removal of Cr³⁺ from water solutions by biosorbents from the rind, endosperm, and endosperm + episperm of the Jatropha curcas was evaluated. Adsorption tests were performed in batch systems for evaluating the influence of the solution’s pH, adsorbent mass, contact time, initial Cr³⁺ concentrations, and solution temperature during the adsorption process. Kinetic, adsorption isotherm, and thermodynamic studies were performed to investigate the mechanisms that control adsorption. Ideal conditions for the adsorption process included pH of the solution of 5.5 and 8 g L⁻¹ adsorbent mass, within 60 min time contact between adsorbent and adsorbate. Maximum adsorption capacities by Langmuir model for rind, endosperm, and endosperm + episperm of the J. curcas were, respectively, 22.11, 18.20, and 22.88 mg g⁻¹, with the occurrence of chemosorption in mono and multilayers. Results show that the biosorbents obtained from J. curcas have a high potential to recuperate Cr³⁺ from contaminated water sources.

The occurrence of eight pharmaceuticals was monitored during four seasons (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) along a 250-km stretch of the Msunduzi and Mgeni rivers in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This paper describes an optimized method for the determination of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in sediments. The method combines ultrasonic, centrifuge, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the detection of these drugs in solid samples. Most of the parameters that affect the extraction step were optimized. Solid samples were placed in a centrifuge tube and extracted with ethyl acetate:acetone (1:1, two cycles), followed by clean-up with Oasis HLB cartridge and derivatization with N, O-bis(trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA). Satisfactory recoveries were obtained ranging from 66 to 130%, depending on the analyte. Precision expressed as RSD (%) (n = 3) was less than 20% for all analytes. The LODs and LOQs were in the range of 0.024 to 1.90 ng g⁻¹ which allowed to be applied in the analysis solid samples in Msunduzi and Mgeni rivers. In the solid samples analyzed, NSAID concentration ranged from not detected to 221 ng g⁻¹.

(Eddy Y.),
The quantification of carbon monoxide (CO) emissions is necessary for atmospheric research and has been studied extensively. Aiming to build an inventory with both high spatial resolution and detailed source information, this study estimated the monthly nation-level CO emissions from 79 major sources from 1960 to 2013, based on which a 0.1° × 0.1° gridded emission map was developed for 2011 using a recent energy product. The high sectorial resolution of this inventory can help scientists to study the influence of socioeconomic development on emissions, help decision makers to formulate abatement strategies, and potentially benefit emission-reduction scenario modeling and cost-benefit analysis. Our estimate for 2011 was 888.17 Tg (745.67 Tg–1112.80 Tg), with a much higher contribution from anthropogenic activities (68 %) than wildfire and deforestation (32 %). The anthropogenic emissions in recent years were dominated by developing countries due to the continuously increasing industrial production intensity and/or population explosion. Further discussion of the spatial and temporal variation of emissions was conducted, and a decreased emission intensity was observed, which was attributed to related policies and technological progress.

Sulfonated reactive azo dyes, such as Reactive Orange 107, are extensively used in textile industries. Conventional wastewater treatment systems are incapable of degrading and decolorizing reactive azo dyes completely from effluents, because of their stability and resistance to aerobic biodegradation. However, reactive azo dyes are degradable under anaerobic conditions by releasing toxic aromatic amines. To clarify reaction mechanisms and the present toxicity, the hydrolyzed Reactive Orange 107 was treated in anaerobic-aerobic two-step batch experiments. Sulfonated transformation products were identified employing coupled ICP-MS and Q-TOF-MS measurements. Suspected screening lists were generated using the EAWAG-BBD. The toxicity of the reactor content was determined utilizing online measurements of the inhibition of Vibrio fischeri. The OCHEM web platform for environmental modeling was instrumental in the estimations of the environmental impact of generated transformation products.

Achieving a long-term food security and preventing hunger include a better nutrition through sustainable systems of production, distribution, and consumption. Nonetheless, the quest for an alternative to increasing global food supply to meet the growing demand has led to the use of poor agricultural practices that promote climate change. Given the contribution of the agricultural ecosystem towards greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, this study investigated the causal nexus between carbon dioxide emissions and agricultural ecosystem by employing a data spanning from 1961 to 2012. Evidence from long-run elasticity shows that a 1 % increase in the area of rice paddy harvested will increase carbon dioxide emissions by 1.49 %, a 1 % increase in biomass-burned crop residues will increase carbon dioxide emissions by 1.00 %, a 1 % increase in cereal production will increase carbon dioxide emissions by 1.38 %, and a 1 % increase in agricultural machinery will decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 0.09 % in the long run. There was a bidirectional causality between carbon dioxide emissions, cereal production, and biomass-burned crop residues. The Granger causality shows that the agricultural ecosystem in Ghana is sensitive to climate change vulnerability.

In the present work, two kinds of hybrid polymeric–inorganic coatings containing TiO₂ or SiO₂ particles and prepared starting from two commercial resins (Alpha®SI30 and Bluesil®BP9710) were developed and applied to two kinds of mortars (an air-hardening calcic lime mortar [ALM] and a natural hydraulic lime mortar [HLM]) to achieve better performances in terms of water repellence and consequently damage resistance. The two pure commercial resins were also applied for comparison purposes. Properties of the coated materials and their performance were studied using different techniques such as contact angle measurements, capillary absorption test, mercury intrusion porosimetry, surface free energy, colorimetric measurements and water vapour permeability tests. Tests were also performed to determine the weathering effects on both the commercial and the hybrid coatings in order to study their durability. Thus, exposures to UV radiation, to UV radiation/condensed water cycles and to a real polluted atmospheric environment have been performed. The effectiveness of the hybrid SiO₂ based coating was demonstrated, especially in the case of the HLM mortar.

The bovine leather processing (tanning industries) stands as a generating activity of potentially toxic waste. The emission of untreated effluents into the environment may cause serious harm to human and environmental health. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated the possible effects of intake of these effluents in experimental mammalian models. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the neurobehavioral effects of chronic intake of different tannery effluent concentrations diluted with water (0.1, 1, and 5%) in male C57BL/6J mice. After 120 days of exposure, the animals were subjected to different behavioral tests, predictive of anxiety (elevated plus maze (EPM), open-field (OF), and neophobia test), depression (forced swim), and memory deficits (object recognition test). From the EPM test, it was observed that the mice exposed to 0.1, 1, and 5% of tannery effluents showed higher anxiety scores compared to the animals in the control group. However, the results of this study revealed no differences among the experimental groups in the proportion (percentage) of locomotion in the central quarters/total locomotion calculated (by OF), considered an indirect measure for anxiety. At neophobia test, all the animals exposed to chronic intake of tannery effluents showed higher latency time to start eating, which corresponds to an anxiogenic behavior. Regarding the forced swim test, it was observed that the animals exposed to tannery effluents had longer time in immobility behavior, suggesting a predictive behavior to depression. Finally, the object recognition test showed that the treatments did not cause damage to the animals’ memory. The recognition rate of the new object did not differ among the experimental groups. Thus, it is concluded that male C57BL/6J mice (inbred strain) exposed to tannery effluents have predictive neurobehavioral changes of anxiety and depression, without memory deficit.
