International audience | Agricultural pollution poses a considerable challenge to grain security and human health, especially in economically developed areas. Mineral exploitation, chemical enterprise operation, pesticide and fertilizer application, sewage discharge, and vehicle emissions are the pollution sources of agricultural land. Identifying and assessing potential agricultural pollution (PAP) is, therefore, the most urgent task to achieve grain security and the human health. Large-scale (e.g., regional or national) PAP assessment can be very expensive, which could also generate a certain amount of information that usually discourages evaluation by decision-makers. To identify areas for regional priority investigation, here we proposed an assessment framework for PAP in economically developed areas. The framework consisted of PAP assessment, vulnerability assessment, hazard assessment, and socio-economic assessment. Then, we conducted a case study by using the proposed framework in one of China’s economically developed areas, Zhejiang Province. The results showed that PAP, especially soil heavy metal pollution, soil acidification, and surface water pollution involved almost the entire study area. High-vulnerability high-hazard areas were mainly associated with high socio-economic development or high grain yield. These areas had negatively affected grain security and increased carcinogenic risk, potentially contributing to the formation of cancer villages. Based on the results, we proposed measures for environmental risk managers to alleviate the impact of PAP on grain security and human health in economically developed areas.

International audience | Artificial light at night (ALAN) can disrupt adaptive patterns of physiology and behavior that promote high fitness, resulting in physiological stress and elevation of steroid glucocorticoids (corticosterone, CORT in birds). Elevated CORT may have particularly profound effects early in life, with the potential for enduring effects that persist into adulthood. Research on the consequences of early-life exposure to ALAN remains limited, especially outside of the laboratory, and the effects of early-life light exposure on CORT concentrations in wild nestling birds remain to be elucidated. We used an experimental setup to test the hypothesis that ALAN elevates CORT concentrations in developing free-living birds, by exposing nestling great tits (Parus major) to ALAN inside nest boxes. We measured CORT in feathers grown over the timeframe of the experiment (7 nights), such that CORT concentrations represent an integrative metric of hormone release over the period of nocturnal light exposure, and of development. We also assessed the relationships between feather CORT concentrations, body condition, nestling size rank and fledging success. In addition, we evaluated the relationship between feather CORT concentrations and telomere length. Nestlings exposed to ALAN had higher feather CORT concentrations than control nestlings, and nestlings in poorer body condition and smaller brood members also had higher CORT. On the other hand, telomere length, fledging success, and recruitment rate were not significantly associated with light exposure or feather CORT concentrations. Results indicate that exposure to ALAN elevates CORT concentrations in nestlings, which may reflect physiological stress. In addition, the organizational effects of CORT are known to be substantial. Thus, despite the lack of effect on telomere length and survivorship, elevated CORT concentrations in nestlings exposed to ALAN may have subsequent impacts on later-life fitness and stress sensitivity.

Some of them are in operation for more than five years now, reason why some field experiences are being conducted under the project name of APPROVE (APatite for P Removal and Valorisation: an Evaluation) to assess the current performance and saturation conditions of full-scale filters. This paper will present fieldfeedback results from 4 different wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) with Phosclean® filters. WWTP A (filter A) has been monitored since its commission in 2017 to assess the effluent's pH evolution due to material dissolution in the very first stage of its life span. Three other WWTPs (B, C and D) with hydraulically different Phosclean® filters, in operation since 2012, are also monitored: vertical up-flow (filter B); vertical down-flow (filter C) and horizontal flow (filter D). Assessment of the treatment plants use regulatory surveys since the beginning of plants operations. As treatment plants have not the same capacity, the number of regulatory surveys is heterogeneous and not high enough to have a precise knowledge on saturation levels and retention kinetics. Consequently, additional measurement campaigns have been carried out over two years. Four-day campaigns have been carried out twice per year for each WWTP. In order to evaluate the P retention's performance, 24h-flow proportional samplings at the inlet and outlet of the Phosclean® filter were coupled to spotsamplings at different hydraulic retention times inside the filter to measure retention's kinetic. Online P-PO4 measurements at the outlet of the filter were also conducted to observe possible dynamic within a day. Mayor parameters as pH, conductivity, redox potential, TSS, BOD, COD, N, TP, P-PO4 3- as well as anions and cations were measured for these samples. For filter A, a flowmeter and an online pH probe at the outlet of the filter have been implemented for several months. To determine the nature of phosphate precipitates, SEM and DRX analyses were performed for solid samples taken at different points in the filters. Furthermore, fluorescein-tracer tests were carried out to precisely determine water retention times and possible short-circuiting, as well as dynamic penetrometer measurements to assess potential changes on the material density due to surface precipitation. Results of first campaigns show that P concentration at the outlet of filters C and D respect the maximal regulation limit for total phosphorous disposal after 5 years of operation. This is not the case for filter B, after 4 years of operation, which is over the regulation limit fixed at 2.5mgTP/L. Nevertheless, differences in the regulation limits, inlet P concentrations, hydraulic loads, operation and design, must be taken into consideration to analyze variations of filters performances. The evolution of TP concentrations along time will be presented for all filters according to saturation levels for comparison. Kinetics evolution as a function of saturation conditions will be also presented. Results show that filters B, C and D are at different saturation levels, being filter B the most saturated.

International audience | Both macroplastic and microplastic contamination levels were assessed for the first time in a tropical river estuary system, i.e. the Saigon River, that traverses a developing South East Asian megacity, i.e. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The analysis of floating debris collected daily on the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal by the municipal waste management service shows that the plastic mass percentage represents 11-43%, and the land-based plastic debris entering the river was estimated from 0.96 to 19.91 g inhabitant-1d-1, namely 350 to 7270 g inhabitant-1yr-1. Microplastics were assessed in the Saigon River and in four urban canals by sampling bulk water for anthropogenic fiber analysis and 300 μm mesh size plankton net exposition for fragment analysis. Fibers and fragments are highly concentrated in this system, respectively 172,000 to 519,000 items m-3and 10 to 223 items m-3. They were found in various colors and shapes with smallest size and surface classes being predominant. The macroplastics and fragments were mainly made of polyethylene and polypropylene while the anthropogenic fibers were mainly made of polyester. The relation between macroplastic and microplastic concentrations, waste management, population density and water treatment are further discussed.

International audience | Poplar is commonly used for phytoremediation of metal polluted soils. However, the high concentrations of trace elements present in leaves may return to soil upon leaf abscission. To investigate the mechanisms controlling leaf metal content, metal concentrations and expression levels of genes involved in metal transport were monitored at different developmental stages on leaves from different poplar genotypes growing on a contaminated field. Large differences in leaf metal concentrations were observed among genotypes. Whereas Mg was remobilized during senescence, Zn and Cd accumulation continued until leaf abscission in all genotypes. A positive correlation between Natural Resistance Associated Macrophage Protein 1 (NRAMP1) expres-sion levels and Zn bio-concentration factors was observed. Principal component analyses of metal concentrations and gene expression levels clearly discriminated poplar genotypes. This study highlights a general absence of trace element remobilization from poplar leaves despite genotype specificities in the control of leaf metal homeostasis.

Antibiotics, frequently detected in aquatic ecosystems, can negatively impact the health of resident organisms. Although the study on the possible effects of antibiotics on these organisms has been increasing, there is still little information available on the molecular effects on exposed non-target organisms. In our study we used a label free proteomic approach and sea bream, Sparus aurata, to evaluate the effects of exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of the antibiotic compounds ciprofloxacin (CIP), sulfadiazine (SULF) and trimethoprim (TRIM) produced at the protein level. Individuals of sea bream were exposed to single compounds at 5.2 ± 2.1 μg L− 1 of CIP, 3.8 ± 2.7 μg L− 1 of SULF and 25.7 ± 10.8 μg L− 1 of TRIM for 21 days. After exposure, the number of differentially expressed proteins in the liver was 39, 73 and 4 for CIP, SULF and TRIM respectively. In the brain, there was no alteration of proteins after CIP and TRIM treatment, while 9 proteins were impacted after SULF treatment. The differentially expressed proteins were involved in cellular biological, metabolic, developmental, growth and biological regulatory processes. Systematic seafloor surveys are a highly desirable method of marine litter monitoring, but the high costs involved in seafloor sampling are not a trivial handicap. In the present work, we explore the opportunity provided by the artisanal trawling fisheries to obtain systematic data on marine litter in the Gulf of Cadiz between 2019 and 2021. We find that plastic was the most frequent material, with a prevalence of single-use and fishing-related items. Litter densities decreased with increasing distance to shore with a seasonal migration of the main litter hotspots. During pre-lockdown and post-lockdown stages derived from COVID-19, marine litter density decreased by 65 %, likely related to the decline in tourism and outdoor recreational activities. A continuous collaboration of 33 % of the local fleet would imply a removal of hundreds of thousands of items each year.
