A revised classification system describing the ecological quality status of organically enriched marine sediments based on total dissolved sulfides النص الكامل

A field study is presented that provides an alternative method and system for classifying the ecological quality status (EQS) of organically enriched marine sediments based on total free sulfide concentrations (S²⁻). Sediments collected adjacent to coastal aquaculture activities across a broad biogeographic range were analysed using three S²⁻ methods. S²⁻ is a product of organic matter mineralization and is a major cause of benthic community impacts from excess organic enrichment. The results confirm that the ion-selective electrode protocol that is widely used in monitoring programs to classify benthic impacts provides unreliable data and site classifications. An EQS classification system is presented that employs S²⁻ data measured rapidly and simply in the field by direct ultraviolet spectrophotometry. Interrelations between S²⁻ concentrations and several benthic macrofauna community health metrics were employed to develop the EQS system. These relationships were consistent regardless of organic matter source, geographic region or sediment grain size.

The rapid pace of increasing oceanic acidity poses a major threat to the fitness of the marine ecosystem, as well as the buffering capacity of the oceans. Disruption in chemical equilibrium in the ocean leads to decreased carbonate ion precipitation, resulting in calcium carbonate saturation. If these trends continue, calcifying invertebrates will experience difficultly maintaining their calcium carbonate exoskeleton and shells. Because malfunction of exoskeleton formation by calcifiers in response to ocean acidification (OA) will have non-canonical biological cascading results in the marine ecosystem, many studies have investigated the direct and indirect consequences of OA on ecosystem- and physiology-related traits of marine invertebrates. Considering that evolutionary adaptation to OA depends on the duration of OA effects, long-term exposure to OA stress over multi-generations may result in adaptive mechanisms that increase the potential fitness of marine invertebrates in response to OA. Transgenerational studies have the potential to elucidate the roles of acclimation, carryover effects, and evolutionary adaptation within and over generations in response to OA. In particular, understanding mechanisms of transgenerational responses (e.g., antioxidant responses, metabolic changes, epigenetic reprogramming) to changes in OA will enhance our understanding of marine invertebrate in response to rapid climate change.

The significant amount of plastic litter in the form of microplastics (size <5 mm) is garnering attention owing to its potential threat to marine life. Reliable, cost- and time-efficient analysis methods for monitoring microplastic abundance globally are still missing. Several studies proposed a fast detection method by binding the solvatochromic dye Nile Red on the surface of microplastics and using fluorescence microscopy for their detection. All the staining approaches reported so far differ in terms of Nile Red concentration, solvents, and staining procedure. Here, we compare the staining protocols published prior to 2019 and propose an optimized staining protocol. Furthermore, we explore the potential of Nile Red staining in combination with photoluminescence spectroscopy to identify the polymer type and to distinguish plastics from non-plastics.

Coral species display varying susceptibilities to biotic or abiotic stress. To address the causes underlying this phenomenon, we profiled the Symbiodiniaceae clade type, bacterial communities and coral transcriptome responses in Pavona decussata and Acropora pruinosa, two species displaying different environmental tolerances in the Weizhou Island. We found that C1 was the most dominant Symbiodiniaceae subclade, with no difference detected between A. pruinosa and P. decussata. Nevertheless, P. decussata exhibited higher microbial diversity and significantly different community structure compared with that of A. pruinosa. Transcriptome analysis revealed that coral genes with significantly high expression in P. decussata were mostly related to immune and stress-resistance responses, whereas, those with significantly low expression were metabolism-related. We postulate that the higher tolerance of P. decussata as compared with that of A. pruinosa is the result of several traits, such as higher microbial diversity, different dominant bacteria, higher immune and stress-resistant response, and lower metabolic rate.

Bio-accumulation of persistent organic pollutants including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), brominated flame retardants and organochlorine pesticides continue to be of major concern for marine apex predators such as killer whales. The concentrations of 16 polychlorinated biphenyls, 7 poly-brominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 1 poly-brominated biphenyl (PBB) and a range of 19 organochlorine compounds (OCs) was investigated in blubber samples from a mother-foetus pair, an adult female and an adult male killer whale stranded in Ireland between 2010 and 2017. Concentrations ranged from 1.5 mg/kg to 49.3 mg/kg lipid weight and 0.04–1.2 mg/kg lipid weight for Σ16PCBs and Σ7PBDEs respectively. Concentrations of organochlorine compounds were also investigated in the male killer whale; a Σ19OC concentration of 49.4 mg/kg lipid weight was recorded. This study shows high levels of persistent organic pollutants occur in this species of whales stranded in Ireland.

Pollutant emissions from ships could increase with expanding international trade and shipping fleet size, posing a severe but often overlooked threat to public health. China houses the three biggest port clusters in the world: the Bohai Bay (BB), the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), and the Pearl River Delta (PRD) and must combat pollutant emissions. This study examines the emissions of key pollutants (i.e., NOX, PM₁₀, PM₂.₅, HC, CO, SOX, CO₂, NMVOC, and CH₄) utilizing a bottom-up methodology with the aid of automatic identification system data. Our results show that among the three regions studied, ships in the YRD produce the most emissions, accounting for 47.84% of the combined total emissions in 2018. We evaluate the emissions from different ship types, operation modes, and discharge equipment. Container ships account for ~50% of all emissions, which are mainly generated during the cruising phase. Different power sources produce varying levels of pollutants owing to power, load, and discharge variations. In addition, ship emissions have seasonal characteristics, which are reflected by the decline trend recorded in February, July, August, and December. This baseline dataset could aid comparisons with historic or future emission data and help establish regulatory actions to improve air quality.

Ballast water is a major vector of invasion by protozoans and metazoans. Bacterial invasion is less-well understood. We surveyed the bacterial diversity of ballast water from 26 container ships arriving at the Yangshan Deepwater Port, Shanghai, China during 2015–2016. We characterized the ballast microbiome using high-throughput sequencing (HTS) based on V4-V5 region of 16S rRNA genes. We simultaneously monitored physicochemical parameters of the ballast water, including temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), salinity, turbidity, total suspended solid (TSS), particulate organic carbon (POC), NO₂, NH₄, PO₄. Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum, comprising more than 50% of the OTUs of almost all vessels, followed by Bacteroidetes (12.08%), Actinobacteria (4.86%) Planctomycetes (3.24%) and Cyanobacteria (1.95%). The relative abundance of Cyanobacteria differed among vessels. It was negatively correlated with temperature, NO₃, pH, TSS, PO₄, and turbidity and positively correlated with NH₄, POC. The genus Synechococcus was the most common Cyanobacteria in our results. Escherichia coli were relatively rare; they are indicator-species of D-2 standards published by the IMO. The relative abundance of the genus Vibrio ranged from 0.003% to 24.88% among different vessels. Our results showed that HTS was able to profile the bacterial communities in ballast-waters, even when the approach was restricted by technical and other obstacles.

Hypoxia is often thought of as the key factor responsible for fish kill events in coastal areas but fish kill events are too complex to be governed by a single factor. The events are influenced by a combination of chemical, biological and physical processes. Hydrodynamics play a key role in understanding the formation of hypoxia in shallow waters. This study aims to identify the settings of the physical forces that lead to a large-scale depletion of dissolved oxygen in Kuwait Bay at the northwest of the Arabian Gulf. The assessment, made with a validated three-dimensional numerical model (Alosairi and Alsulaiman, 2019), revealed that the pollution from the outfalls leads to nearfield depletion of dissolved oxygen but has only a minor effect on the bay-scale dissolved oxygen. This is a result of the strong dynamics of Kuwait Bay, which mixes the pollutant rapidly before it is transported seawards. Offshore, a low dynamic region has been identified near Jahra Bay which is susceptible to occasional dissolved oxygen depletion. Assessment of the physical forces revealed that the density-driven current and, to a greater extent the wind regime, controlled the formation of a hypoxic parcel near Jahra Bay. The combination of neap tides and low mixed winds reduced mixing and enabled the longer residence times of Kuwait Bay. These are the most critical circumstances, as the average dissolved oxygen can be reduced by 50% during summer. The circumstance resulting in low dynamics near Jahra Bay were also found to be effective in explaining algal blooms.

Noroviruses are the most common cause of gastroenteritis outbreaks in humans and bivalve shellfish consumption is a recognized route of infection. Our aim was to detect and characterize norovirus in bivalves from a coastal city of Brazil. Nucleic acid was extracted from the bivalve's digestive tissue concentrates using magnetic beads. From March 2018 to June 2019, 77 samples were screened using quantitative RT-PCR. Noroviruses were detected in 41.5%, with the GII being the most prevalent (37.7%). The highest viral load was 3.5 × 106 and 2.5 × 105 GC/g in oysters and mussels, respectively. PMA-treatment demonstrated that a large fraction of the detected norovirus corresponded to non-infectious particles. Genetic characterization showed the circulation of the GII.2[P16] and GII.4[P4] genotypes. Norovirus detection in bivalves reflects the anthropogenic impact on marine environment and serves as an early warning for the food-borne disease outbreaks resulting from the consumption of contaminated molluscs.

China's seaborne foreign oil supply through the Malacca Strait is facing security challenges due to territorial disputes, pirate attacks, and geopolitics. To overcome these challenges, China plans to import oil through one of the corridors of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)—the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This study estimated and compared ship emissions and their externalities associated with seaborne oil supply from the top five oil suppliers to China through the existing shipping route via the Malacca Strait and proposed route via CEPC. Ship activity-based methodology is applied to estimate the emissions of air pollutants (CO₂, NOₓ, SO₂, PM₁₀, and CO) during cruising, maneuvering, and hoteling periods. The results show that the total ship emissions of China's seaborne oil supply can be significantly reduced from 6.2 million tons to 2.1 million tons via the CPEC route. While external cost can be reduced up to 65.9% via the CPEC route.
