Characterizing the influence of highways on springtime NO2 and NH3 concentrations in regional forest monitoring plots النص الكامل
2014
Watmough, Shaun A. | McDonough, Andrew M. | Raney, Shanel M.
Highways are major sources of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ammonia (NH3). In this study, springtime NO2 and NH3 concentrations were measured at 17 Ontario Forest Biomonitoring Network (OFBN) plots using passive samplers. Average springtime NO2 concentrations were between 1.3 μg m−3 and 27 μg m−3, and NH3 concentrations were between 0.2 μg m−3 and 1.7 μg m−3, although concentrations measured in May (before leaf out) were typically twice as high as values recorded in June. Average NO2 concentrations, and to a lesser extent NH3, could be predicted by road density at all radii (around the plot) tested (500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m). Springtime NO2 concentrations were predicted for a further 50 OFBN sites. Normalized plant/lichen N concentrations were positively correlated with estimated springtime NO2 and NH3 concentrations. Epiphytic foliose lichen richness decreased with increasing NO2 and NH3, but vascular plant richness was positively related to estimated springtime NO2 and NH3.

2014
Vanos, Jennifer K. | Hebbern, Christopher | Cakmak, Sabit
Synoptic weather and ambient air quality synergistically influence human health. We report the relative risk of mortality from all non-accidental, respiratory-, and cardiovascular-related causes, associated with exposure to four air pollutants, by weather type and season, in 10 major Canadian cities for 1981 through 1999. We conducted this multi-city time-series study using Poisson generalized linear models stratified by season and each of six distinctive synoptic weather types. Statistically significant relationships of mortality due to short-term exposure to carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and ozone were found, with significant modifications of risk by weather type, season, and mortality cause. In total, 61% of the respiratory-related mortality relative risk estimates were significantly higher than for cardiovascular-related mortality. The combined effect of weather and air pollution is greatest when tropical-type weather is present in the spring or summer.

In this study, we assess the intense pollution episode of June 2013, in Riau province, Indonesia from land clearing. We relied on satellite retrievals of aerosols and Carbon monoxide (CO) due to lack of ground measurements. We used both the yearly and daily data for aerosol optical depth (AOD), fine mode fraction (FMF), aerosol absorption optical depth (AAOD) and UV aerosol index (UVAI) for characterizing variations. We found significant enhancement in aerosols and CO during the pollution episode. Compared to mean (2008–2012) June AOD of 0.40, FMF-0.39, AAOD-0.45, UVAI-1.77 and CO of 200 ppbv, June 2013 values reached 0.8, 0.573, 0.672, 1.77 and 978 ppbv respectively. Correlations of fire counts with AAOD and UVAI were stronger compared to AOD and FMF. Results from a trajectory model suggested transport of air masses from Indonesia towards Malaysia, Singapore and southern Thailand. Our results highlight satellite-based mapping and monitoring of pollution episodes in Southeast Asia.
اظهر المزيد [+] اقل [-]Stemflow acid neutralization capacity in a broadleaved deciduous forest: The role of edge effects النص الكامل
2014
Shiklomanov, Alexey N. | Levia, Delphis F.
Atmospheric deposition is an important pathway for moisture, nutrient, and pollutant exchange among the atmosphere, forest, and soils. Previous work has shown the importance of proximity to the forest edge to chemical fluxes in throughfall, but far less research has considered stemflow. This study examined the difference in acid neutralization capacity (ANC) of stemflow of nineteen Liriodendron tulipifera L. (yellow poplar) trees between the forest edge and interior in a rural area of northeastern Maryland. We measured ANC directly via potentiometric titration. Stemflow from trees at the forest edge was found to have significantly higher and more variable pH and ANC than in the forest interior (p < 0.01). No mathematical trend between ANC and distance to the forest edge was observed, indicating the importance of individual tree characteristics in stemflow production and chemistry. These results reaffirm the importance of stemflow for acid neutralization by deciduous tree species.

2014
Perkola, Noora | Sainio, Pirjo
The artificial sweeteners sucralose (SCL), acesulfame (ACS), saccharin (SAC), and cyclamate (CYC) have been detected in environmental waters in Europe and North America. Higher environmental levels are expected in view of the increasing consumption of these food additives. In this study, an isotope-dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) LC–MS/MS method was developed and validated for quantifying the four artificial sweeteners in boreal lakes (n = 3) and rivers (n = 12). The highest concentrations of ACS, SAC, CYC and SCL were 9,600, 490, 210 and 1000 ng/L, respectively. ACS and SAC were detected in all studied samples, and CYC and SCL in 98% and 56% of the samples. Seasonal trends of ACS and SAC were observed in some rivers. ACS and SCL concentrations in rivers correlated linearly with population equivalents of the wastewater treatment plants in the catchment areas, whereas SAC and CYC concentrations depend more on the source.

2014
Li, Lianzhen | Wu, Huifeng | van Gestel, Cornelis A.M. | Peijnenburg, Willie J.G.M. | Allen, Herbert E.
The bioavailability of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd from field-aged orchard soils in a certified fruit plantation area of the Northeast Jiaodong Peninsula in China was assessed using bioassays with earthworms (Eisenia fetida) and chemical assays. Soil acidity increased with increasing fruit cultivation periods with a lowest pH of 4.34. Metals were enriched in topsoils after decades of horticultural cultivation, with highest concentrations of Cu (132 kg−1) and Zn (168 mg kg−1) in old apple orchards and Pb (73 mg kg−1) and Cd (0.57 mg kg−1) in vineyard soil. Earthworm tissue concentrations of Cu and Pb significantly correlated with 0.01 M CaCl2-extractable soil concentrations (R2 = 0.70, p < 0.001 for Cu; R2 = 0.58, p < 0.01 for Pb). Because of the increased bioavailability, regular monitoring of soil conditions in old orchards and vineyards is recommended, and soil metal guidelines need reevaluation to afford appropriate environmental protection under acidifying conditions.

This study represents for the first time a comprehensive assessment of functionality and environmental impacts of metallic silver nanoparticles (Ag-NP) compared to conventional organic biocides. Four different transparent, hydrophobic coatings of wooden outdoor façades were tested during one year outdoor weathering. The total silver release from products with Ag-NP was proportional to the overall erosion of the coating. The results indicate that the Ag-NPs are likely transformed to silver complexes, which are considerably less toxic than ionic silver. The protective effect of the silver containing coatings against mold, blue stain and algae was insufficient, even in immaculate and non-weathered conditions. The release of organic biocides from conventional coatings was dependent on the weather conditions, the type of biocide and the use in the base or top coat. The conventional coating showed a good overall performance free from mold, blue stain and algae until the end of the test period.

2014
The occurrence of a polyether trisiloxane surfactant in the ng L−1 range in German surface waters is reported for the first time. The studied surfactant does not ubiquitously occur in the aquatic environment but can reach surface waters on a local scale. As a first step towards the understanding of the environmental fate, the hydrolysis was studied according to the OECD guideline 111. It confirmed that the trisiloxane surfactant is sensitive to hydrolysis and that the hydrolysis rate strongly depends on the pH and the temperature. If one takes only into account the hydrolysis, the trisiloxane surfactant could persist several weeks in river water (the half-life in water is approximately 50 days at pH 7, 25 °C, and an initial concentration of 2 mg L−1). A degradation product, more polar than the initial trisiloxane surfactant, was identified by high resolution mass spectrometry.
اظهر المزيد [+] اقل [-]Prevalence and sunlight photolysis of controlled and chemotherapeutic drugs in aqueous environments النص الكامل
2014
Lin, Angela Yu-Chen | Lin, Yanjing | Lee, Wan-Ning
This study addresses the occurrences and natural fates of chemotherapeutics and controlled drugs when found together in hospital effluents and surface waters. The results revealed the presence of 11 out of 16 drugs in hospital effluents, and the maximum detected concentrations were at the μg L−1 level in the hospital effluents and the ng L−1 level in surface waters. The highest concentrations corresponded to meperidine, morphine, 5-fluorouracil and cyclophosphamide. The sunlight photolysis of the target compounds was investigated, and the results indicated that morphine and codeine can be significantly attenuated, with half-lives of 0.27 and 2.5 h, respectively, in natural waters. Photolysis can lower the detected environmental concentrations, also lowering the estimated environmental risks of the target drugs to human health. Nevertheless, 5-fluorouracil and codeine were found to have a high risk quotient (RQ), demonstrating the high risks of directly releasing hospital wastewater into the environment.

Almeida, M. Inês G.S. | Chan, Cleopas | Pettigrove, Vincent J. | Cattrall, Robert W. | Kolev, Spas D.
The use of a polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) in a novel passive sampler to measure the time-weighted average concentration of Zn(II) in urban waters is described. The passive sampler consists of a compartment containing an acidic receiving solution, which is separated from the external source solution by a PIM consisting of 40 wt% di-2-(ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid as the extractant, and 60 wt% poly-(vinyl chloride) as the base polymer. Two laboratory passive sampling techniques were tested. One involved immersion of the passive sampler into a source solution (“dip-in” approach) for a predetermined period of time while in the other one the source solution was flown past the membrane of the sampler (“flow-through” approach). The latter approach was found to be more suitable for the calibration of the passive sampler under laboratory conditions. A successful application using the “dip-in” sampling approach in urban waters has been conducted for proof of concept.
