Biodegradation processes and changes in microbial community structure were investigated in black carbon (BC) amended soils in a laboratory experiment using two soils (black soil and red soil). We applied different percentages of charcoal as BC (0%, 0.5% and 1% by weight) with 100 mg kg⁻¹ of phenanthrene. Soil samples were collected at different incubation times (0, 7, 15, 30, 60, 120 d). The amendment with BC caused a marked decrease in the dissipation (ascribed to mainly degradation and/or sequestration) of phenanthrene residues from soil. Extracted phenanthrene in black soil with 1% BC were higher, oppositely in red soil, 0.5% BC amendments were higher. There were significant changes in the PLFA pattern in phenanthrene-spiked soils with time but BC had little effect on the microbial community structure of phenanthrene-spiked soils, as indicated by principal component analysis (PCA) of the PLFA signatures.

This study focuses primarily on the inventory of PCDD/Fs and PBDD/Fs associated with the low-temperature thermal processing of scrap printed circuit boards (PCBs). Twelve 2,3,7,8-substituted PBDD/Fs congeners were found in various sample outputs, with a total content of 60,000ng TEQ/kg at 250°C under air atmosphere. A rapid increase of PBDD/Fs was produced with 160,000ng TEQ/kg, at 275°C—about twice that under the N₂ atmosphere. At 275°C, the total contents of PCDD/Fs were only 170 and 770ng TEQ/kg under an N₂ and air atmospheres respectively. The results reveal that a large contribution of PBDD/Fs emission may be expected from the dismantling or any other thermal processing of PCB scrap. PCDD/Fs, however, are formed and released into the environment in a variety of ways. Additional research is required to look for the causal factors that affect emissions.

2012
Teixeira, Daniel C. | Montezuma, Rita C. | Oliveira, Rogério R. | Silva-Filho, Emmanoel V.
Litterfall is believed to be the major flux of Hg to soils in forested landscapes, yet much less is known about this input on tropical environment. The Hg litterfall flux was measured during one year in Atlantic Forest fragment, located within Rio de Janeiro urban perimeter, in the Southeastern region of Brazil. The results indicated a mean annual Hg concentration of 238 ± 52 ng g⁻¹ and a total annual Hg deposition of 184 ± 8.2 μg m⁻² y⁻¹. The negative correlation observed between rain precipitation and Hg concentrations is probably related to the higher photosynthetic activity observed during summer. The total Hg concentration in leaves from the most abundant species varied from 60 to 215 ng g⁻¹. Hg concentration showed a positive correlation with stomatal and trichomes densities. These characteristics support the hypothesis that Tropical Forest is an efficient mercury sink and litter plays a key role in Hg dynamics.

2012
Safa, Majeed | Samarasinghe, Sandhya
This review paper concentrates on carbon dioxide emissions, discussing its agricultural sources and the possibilities for minimizing emissions from these sources in wheat production in Canterbury, New Zealand. This study was conducted over 35,300 ha of irrigated and dryland wheat fields in Canterbury. Total CO₂ emissions were 1032 kg CO₂/ha in wheat production. Around 52% of the total CO₂ emissions were released from fertilizer use and around 20% were released from fuel used in wheat production. Nitrogen fertilizers were responsible for 48% (499 kg CO₂/ha) of CO₂ emissions. The link between nitrogen consumption, CO₂ emissions and crop production showed that reducing the CO₂ emissions would decrease crop production and net financial benefits to farmers.

Jensen, John | Scott-Fordsmand, Janeck J.
The present study tests the effect of antiparasitic compound ivermectin in a constructed food-web system, a soil multi-species (SMS) higher tier test system. Mutualism, competition and predation within the SMS system were introduced by the addition of five collembolan species, one enchytraeid and a predatory mite species. Bait lamina sticks were incorporated as a measure of functional toxicity, attempting to the integrated feeding activity of the invertebrates. The study showed that on the community level all treatments were significantly affecting the community abundance and composition and that the decrease in abundance corresponded well with increasing exposure concentration for all species. Since all concentrations had significant adverse effect on the community structure, the community-based no-effect-concentration is below the lowest test concentration of 0.25 mg kg⁻¹, whereas the EC10 for the individual species were as low as 0.05 mg kg⁻¹. The bait lamina respond was only affected at the highest exposure concentration.

Worms, Isabelle A.M. | Boltzman, Jonathan | García, Miguel | Slaveykova, Vera I.
The present study examines the effect of carboxyl-CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) on Cu and Pb availability to microalgae with different cell wall characteristics: Chlorella kesslerii possessing a cellulosic cell wall and two strains of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a wall-less and a walled strain containing glycoproteins as the main cell wall component. Results demonstrated that QDs decreased Pb and Cu intracellular contents ({Cu}ᵢₙₜ and {Pb}ᵢₙₜ) in walled strains by a factor of 2.5 and 2, respectively, as expected by the decrease of about 70% and 40% in the dissolved Cu and Pb concentrations. QDs increased {Cu}ᵢₙₜ and {Pb}ᵢₙₜ in wall-less strain by a factor of 4 and 3.5. These observations were consistent with the observed association of QDs to the wall-less C. reinhardtii, and lack of association to walled algal strains. Suwannee River humic acid did not influence metal association to QDs, but decreased {Cu}ᵢₙₜ and {Pb}ᵢₙₜ in all microalgae.

Yang, Zhifeng | Zhao, Ying | Xia, Xinghui
Nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions from Phragmites australis (reed) – dominated zones in Baiyangdian Lake, the largest shallow lake of Northern China, were investigated under different hydrological conditions with mesocosm experiments during the growing season of reeds. The daily and monthly N₂O emissions were positively correlated with air temperature and the variation of aboveground biomass of reeds (p < 0.05), respectively. The N₂O emissions from reeds were about 45.8–52.8% of that from the sediments. In terms of the effect of hydrological conditions, N₂O emissions from the aquatic-terrestrial ecotone were 9.4–26.1% higher than the submerged zone, inferring that the variation of water level would increase N₂O emissions. The annual N₂O emission from Baiyangdian Lake was estimated to be about 114.2 t. This study suggested that N₂O emissions from shallow lakes might be accelerated by the climate change as it has increased air temperature and changed precipitation, causing the variation of water level.

Basile, A. | Sorbo, S. | Pisani, T. | Paoli, L. | Munzi, S. | Loppi, S.
This paper tested if culturing the moss Scorpiurum circinatum (Brid.) Fleisch. & Loeske with metal solutions (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) for 30 days causes metal bioaccumulation and ultrastructural changes. The results showed that despite the high heavy metal concentrations in treatment solutions, treated samples did not show severe ultrastructural changes and cells were still alive and generally well preserved. Bioaccumulation highlighted that moss cells survived to heavy metal toxicity by immobilizing most toxic ions extracellularly, likely in binding sites of the cell wall, which is the main site of metal detoxification.

A mixture of common Southern Piedmont (USA) grassland species (Lolium arundinacea, Paspalum dilatatum, Cynodon dactylon and Trifolium repens) was exposed to O₃ [ambient (non-filtered; NF) and twice-ambient (2X) concentrations] and fed to individually caged New Zealand white rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in a digestibility experiment. Forages and feed refusals were analyzed for concentrations of total cell wall constituents, lignin, crude protein, and soluble and hydrolyzable phenolic fractions. Neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber digestibility by rabbits were significantly lower for 2X than NF forage. Decreased digestibility could not be attributed to lignin concentrations, but was associated with increased concentrations of acid-hydrolyzable and saponifiable phenolics. Exposure of forage to elevated O₃ resulted in decreased digestible dry matter intake by rabbits. Elevated O₃ concentrations could be expected to have a negative impact on forage quality, resulting in decreased nutrient utilization by mammalian herbivores in Southern Piedmont grasslands under projected future climate scenarios.

2012
Gouin, Todd | van Egmond, Roger | Price, Oliver R. | Hodges, Juliet E.N.
China represents a significant market for the sale of personal care products (PCPs). Given the continuous emission of hundreds of chemicals used in PCPs to waste water and the aquatic environment after regular use, methods for prioritising the environmental risk assessment for China are needed. In an effort to assess the prioritisation of chemicals used in PCPs in China, we have identified the chemical ingredients used in 2500 PCPs released to the Chinese market in 2009, and estimated the annual emission of these chemicals. The physical-chemical property data for these substances have been estimated and used as model inputs in the RAIDAR model. In general, the RAIDAR model provides an overall assessment of the multimedia fate of chemicals, and provides a holistic approach for prioritising chemical ingredients. The prioritisation exercise conducted in this study is shown to be strongly influenced by loss processes, such as the removal efficiencies of WWT plants and biotransformation.
