Arsenic enhanced plant growth and altered rhizosphere characteristics of hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata

We investigated the effects of arsenic species on As accumulation, plant growth and rhizospheric changes in As−hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata (PV). PV was grown for 60−d in a soil spiked with 200 mg kg−1 arsenate (AsV−soil) or arsenite (AsIII−soil). Diffusive gradients in thin−films technique (DGT) were used to monitor As uptake by PV. Interestingly AsIII−soil produced the highest PV biomass at 8.6 g plant−1, 27% and 46% greater than AsV−soil and the control. Biomass increase was associated with As−induced P uptake by PV. Although AsIII was oxidized to AsV during the experiment, As species impacted As accumulation by PV, with 17.5% more As in AsIII−soil than AsV−soil (36 vs. 31 mg plant−1). As concentration in PV roots was 30% higher in AsV−soil whereas As concentration in PV fronds was 7.9% greater in AsIII−soil, suggesting more rapid translocation of AsIII than AsV. These findings were important to understand the mechanisms of As uptake, accumulation and translocation by PV.

Ethylenediurea (EDU) is the most common chemical used to prevent ozone (O3) injury on vegetation. Despite considerable research, its mode of action remains elusive and gene expression has not been studied. Transcripts of major antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase) were measured for the first time in a model plant (Phaseolus vulgaris cv S156) after short-term O3 exposure (0 or 90 ppb, 5 h/d, 4 days) and a single spray with EDU (0 or 300 ppm). Visible, physiological and biochemical parameters were assessed as indices of O3-induced stress. In O3-exposed EDU-protected plants, levels of transcript, enzyme activity, H2O2 accumulation, gas exchange and foliar visible injury were similar to those in control plants. These results suggest that EDU may halt the O3-induced ROS generation within 24 h from the exposure, and thus the downstream cascade mechanisms leading to increased H2O2 production, impaired gas exchange, and occurrence of leaf lesions.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) may alter the sorption of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOC) to metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs), but the role of DOM and NP types is poorly understood. Here, phenanthrene sorption was quantified on four types of nano-TiO2 (three rutile, one anatase), and a bulk, raw TiO2 powder. Prior to the sorption experiments, these nanoparticles were coated using four different organic materials: Lignin (LIG), tannic acid (TAN), Congo red (CON), and capsorubin (CAP). Lignin, tannic acid, congo red and capsorubin coating substantially enhanced phenanthrene sorption to various TiO2 particles. After coating with a specific DOM, Kd values by the DOM-coated TiO2 particles on percent organic carbon content and surface area (SA) basis (Koc/SA) generally followed the order: TiO2 NPs with hydrophobic surfaces > bulk TiO2 particles > other TiO2 NPs. Different Koc/SA values of various DOM-TiO2 complexes resulted from distinct conformation of the coated DOM and aggregation.

Palaeorecords which depict changes in sulphur dynamics form an invaluable resource for recording atmospheric pollution. Tree rings constitute an archive that are ubiquitously available and can be absolutely dated, providing the potential to explore local- to regional-scale trends in sulphur availability. Rapid isotopic analysis by a novel “on-line” method using elemental analyser isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS) is developed, achieving sample precision of <0.4‰ using sample sizes of 40 mg wood powder. Tree cores from NE Italy show trends in pollution, evidenced through increasing concentrations of sulphur towards the youngest growth, and inverse trends in sulphur isotopes differentiating modern growth with light sulphur isotopes (+0.7‰) from pre-industrial growth (+7.5‰) influenced by bedrock composition. Comparison with speleothem records from the same location demonstrate replication, albeit offset in isotopic value due to groundwater storage. Using EA-IRMS, tree ring archives form a valuable resource for understanding local- to regional-scale sulphur pollution dynamics.

The impact of Bt proteins on non-target arthropods is less understood than their effects on target organisms where the mechanism of toxic action is known. Here, we report the effects of two Bt proteins, Cry1Ab and Cry1Ac, on gene expression in the non-target collembolan, Folsomia candida. A customized microarray was used to study gene expression in F. candida specimens that were exposed to Cry1Ab and Cry1Ac. All selected transcripts were subsequently confirmed by qPCR. Eleven transcripts were finally verified, and three of them were annotated. The responses of all eleven transcripts were tested in specimens for both Cry1Ab and Cry1Ac at a series of concentrations. These transcripts were separated into two and three groups for Cry1Ab and Cry1Ac, respectively, depend on their expression levels. However, those eleven transcripts did not respond to the Bt proteins in Bt-rice residues.

Despite common knowledge that the metal content adsorbed by fine particles is relatively higher compared to coarser particles, the reasons for this phenomenon have gained little research attention. The research study discussed in the paper investigated the variations in metal content for different particle sizes of solids associated with pollutant build-up on urban road surfaces. Data analysis confirmed that parameters favourable for metal adsorption to solids such as specific surface area, organic carbon content, effective cation exchange capacity and clay forming minerals content decrease with the increase in particle size. Furthermore, the mineralogical composition of solids was found to be the governing factor influencing the specific surface area and effective cation exchange capacity. There is high quartz content in particles >150 μm compared to particles <150 μm. As particle size reduces below 150 μm, the clay forming minerals content increases, providing favourable physical and chemical properties that influence adsorption.

This study set out to assess how vertical flow constructed wetlands (vfCW) adapt to different types of tourism-driven variations in influent load, i.e. (i) campsites, closed for six months of the year and featuring a two-month-only window of high-season activity, and (ii) tourist-interest villages either hosting tourists over at least the six months of summer while the permanent population is resident or summer festivals that create intense pollution loads in a short burst of just a few days. The study surveyed 4 campsites and 4 tourist-interest villages that were monitored for several years, generating over 70 performance balances for vfCW that were intentionally scaled down in relation to the conventional French design for experimental trials. The influent wastewater effectively qualifies as domestic sewage, although relatively concentrated, with the campsites presenting particularly high nitrogen concentrations (122 gTKN.L-1). The applied daily loads were also particularly high, with some combinations of load parameters (hydraulic load, organic matter, TKN) leading to 400% overloading. Even under these drastic conditions, quality of effluent remained excellent on the characteristic organic matter parameters, with removal performances always over 85%. However, nitrification performances were poor to good. Analysis of the dataset points to two major design thresholds: For campsites, in order to keep a 73% nitrification rate even at the height of the summer season, the load applied to the 1st stage filter in operation has to be capped at less than 600 gCOD.m-².d-1. For tourist-interest villages, in order to keep an 85% nitrification rate in the summer season, the load applied to the 2nd stage filter in operation has to be capped at less than 22 gTKN.m-².d-1. Here, vfCW were demonstrated to robustly handle a massive increase in loads applied, providing the wetland construction and operation stringently follow best design standards and practices.

International audience | Sediment management from stormwater infiltration basins represents a real environmental and economic issue for stakeholders due to the pollution load and important tonnages of these by-products. To reduce the sediment volumes to treat, organic and metal micropollutant-bearing phases should be identified. A combination of density fractionation procedure and microanalysis techniques was used to evaluate the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) within variable density fractions for three urban stormwater basin sediments. The results confirm that PAHs are found in the lightest fractions (d < 1.9, 1.9 < d < 2.3 g cm(-3)) whereas trace metals are equally distributed within the light, intermediary, and highest fractions (d < 1.9, 1.9 < d < 2.3, 2.3 < d < 2.6, and d > 2.8 g cm(-3)) and are mostly in the 2.3 < d < 2.6 g cm(-3) fraction. The characterization of the five fractions by global analyses and microanalysis techniques (XRD and MEB-EDX) allowed us to identify pollutant-bearing phases. PAHs are bound to the organic matter (OM) and trace metals to OM, clays, carbonates and dense particles. Moreover, the microanalysis study underlines that OM is the main constituent responsible for the aggregation, particularly for microaggregation. In terms of sediment management, it was shown that density fractionation is not suitable for trace metals but could be adapted to separate PAH-enriched phases.

This paper presents the potential and functioning principles of a "Wet" forest buffer zone for reducing concentrations and loads of glyphosate, isoproturon, metazachlor, azoxystrobin, epoxiconazole, and cyproconazole. A tracer injection experiment was conducted in the field in a forest buffer zone at Bray (France). A fine time-scale sampling enabled to illustrate that interactions between pesticides and forest buffer substrates (soil and organic-rich litter layer), had a retarding effect on molecule transfer. Low concentrations were observed for all pesticides at the forest buffer outlet thus demonstrating the efficiency of "Wet" forest buffer zone for pesticide dissipation. Pesticide masses injected in the forest buffer inlet directly determined concentration peaks observed at the outlet. Rapid and partially reversible adsorption was likely the major process affecting pesticide transfer for short retention times (a few hours to a few days). Remobilization of metazachlor, isoproturon, desmethylisoproturon, and AMPA was observed when non-contaminated water flows passed through the forest buffer. Our data suggest that pesticide sorption properties alone could not explain the complex reaction mechanisms that affected pesticide transfer in the forest buffer. Nevertheless, the thick layer of organic matter litter on the top of the forest soil was a key parameter, which enhanced partially reversible sorption of pesticide, thus retarded their transfer, decreased concentration peaks, and likely increased degradation of the pesticides. Consequently, to limit pesticide pollution transported by surface water, the use of already existing forest areas as buffer zones should be equally considered as the most commonly implemented grass buffer strips.

A fixed-bed adsorption filter, used as tertiary stage of sewage treatment, could be a solution to decrease xenobiotics concentrations in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) effluent. The adsorption efficiency of two mineral adsorbent materials (expanded clay (EC) and zeolite (ZE)), both seen as a possible alternative to activated carbon (AC), was evaluated in batch tests. Experiments involving secondary treated domestic wastewater spiked with a cocktail of ten xenobiotics (eight pharmaceuticals and two pesticides) known to be poorly eliminated in conventional biological process were carried out. Removal efficiencies and partitions coefficientswere calculated for two levels of initial xenobiotic concentration, i.e, concentrations lower to 10 microg/L and concentrations ranged from 100 to 1,000 microg/L. While AC was the most efficient adsorbent material, both alternative adsorbent materials showed good adsorption efficiencies for all ten xenobiotics (from 50 to 100 % depending on the xenobiotic/adsorbent material pair). For all the targeted xenobiotics, at lower concentrations, EC presented the best adsorption potential with higher partition coefficients, confirming the results in terms of removal efficiencies. Nevertheless, Zeolite presents virtually the same adsorption potential for both high and low xenobiotics concentrations to be treated. According to this first batch investigation, ZE and EC could be used as alternative absorbent materials to AC in WWTP.
