Investigating the impact on modeled ozone concentrations using meteorological fields from WRF with an updated four–dimensional data assimilation approach
2015
Godowitch, James M. | Gilliam, Robert C. | Roselle, Shawn J.
The four–dimensional data assimilation (FDDA) technique in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) meteorological model has recently undergone an important update from the original version. Previous evaluation results have demonstrated that the updated FDDA approach in WRF provides more accurate wind fields aloft than the original approach, particularly during the nocturnal period when low level jets are a common feature in the Eastern United States. Due to the importance of WRF/FDDA meteorological fields in retrospective air quality applications, a modeling study with the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model was undertaken to ascertain if the improved wind flow fields translate into better performance for ozone. To undertake this objective, separate CMAQ model simulations were performed with meteorological inputs generated by WRF using the original and the updated FDDA approaches for a three month summer period. The evaluation effort focused on observed and modeled surface ozone from a mid–morning hour (10 local daylight time (LDT)). Comparisons of modeled results against concentrations aloft from an instrumented tall tower and from available morning vertical profile measurements were also examined. Surface concentrations near 10 LDT are desirable for evaluating the transport process since they are often representative of ozone that has been transported aloft overnight and has undergone downward entrainment in response to convective mixing the following morning. Statistical results from surface observed and modeled concentration pairs indicated modeled ozone from the CMAQ simulation using the updated FDDA meteorology displayed smaller biases and lower absolute errors at 88% and 80% of monitoring sites, respectively, in the Eastern United States. The CMAQ results with the updated FDDA generally exhibited smaller biases and lower absolute errors at monitoring sites across the northern states than in the southeastern states. The results provide evidence that the more accurate wind flows generated with the updated WRF/FDDA approach improved CMAQ model performance based on the statistical results from 10 LDT ozone concentrations.

2015
Chen, Jinsong | Cao, Wenzhi | Li, Ying | Cao, Di | Wang, Feifei
A nitrous oxide (N2O) emission database was compiled for arable land (284 measurements from 62 studies) to establish predictive models for building a greenhouse gas emission inventory in China. Arable lands were grouped into dry land and rice paddy based on the IPCC 2006 guidelines. The results of the meta analysis show that the annual mean N2O fluxes from dry land and rice paddy were 4.69±4.62 (SD) and 5.89±3.23kg N2O–N ha–1 yr–1. Fertilizer–induced N2O emission factors were 0.68±0.41% for dry land, and 0.49±0.43% for rice paddy. The relationship between N2O flux from arable lands and various environmental variables were analyzed, and the magnitude of N2O emissions from zero mineral N addition control plots (background emission) was determined based on precipitation. Based on the above background emissions and correlation coefficients, two new predictive models were established to estimate N2O emissions from arable lands in China. Comparison showed that the precipitation–rectified background emissions could largely improve the model predictions, and the two new models had better performance than the 1996 IPCC guideline method. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that the important local environmental variables be included in the estimates when compiling a national N2O emission inventory.

2015
Al Rashdi, Saeed | Arabi, Alya A. | Howari, Fares M. | Siad, Abdi
Fifty-seven sediment samples were collected from Abu Dhabi coastal area, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The concentrations of heavy metals including antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, cobalt, copper, mercury, lead, molybdenum, nickel and zinc were obtained using Inductively Coupled Plasma–Mass Spectroscopy (ICP–MS) and X-ray fluorescence. Heavy metal contaminations in Abu Dhabi had increased since 2004. Nevertheless, the enrichment factors, geoaccumulation indices and the pollution load index of 0.3 showed no pollution with any of the measured metals except arsenic.

2015
Stuhldreier, Ines | Bastian, Pepe | Schönig, Eike | Wild, Christian
Coral reefs in the Gulf of Thailand are highly under-investigated regarding responses to anthropogenic stressors. Thus, this study simulated overfishing and eutrophication using herbivore exclosure cages and slow-release fertilizer to study the in-situ effects on benthic algae and invertebrate settlement in a coral reef of Koh Phangan, Thailand. Settlement of organisms and the development of organic matter on light-exposed and shaded tiles were quantified weekly/biweekly over a study period of 12weeks. Simulated eutrophication did not significantly influence response parameters, while simulated overfishing positively affected dry mass, turf algae height and fleshy macroalgae occurrence on light-exposed tiles. On shaded tiles, settlement of crustose coralline algae decreased, while abundances of ascidians increased compared to controls. An interactive effect of both stressors was not observed. These results hint to herbivory as actual key controlling factor on the benthic community, and fleshy macroalgae together with ascidians as potential bioindicators for local overfishing.

2015
Sathicq, María Belén | Bauer, Delia Elena | Gómez, Nora
The aim of this study was to analyze the density, diversity, biomass and assemblage composition of the phytoplankton in relation to environmental conditions (physical, chemical, hydrological and meteorological variables), measured under the different scenarios caused by the ENSO phenomenon in the period between 2005 and 2012, in six sampling sites in the tidal freshwater zone of the Río de la Plata estuary, covering almost 100km of coastline. The results revealed changes in the structure of the phytoplankton, such as a significant reduction of diversity, and decreases in biomass and phytoplankton density, particularly during El Niño phases. Cyanobacteria were more abundant in the neutral periods, Chlorophyceae dominated La Niña phase while Bacyllariophyceae dominated El Niño. However, no complete replacement of species between cycles was observed. The results obtained were highly variable due to the inherent natural variability of the Río de la Plata, emphasized by the anthropogenic impact in this area.

There has been growing concern about potential health risks from exposure to PM2.5 (fine particulate matter). The importance of conducting simultaneous indoor and outdoor measurements emerged because people, especially in developed countries, spend more than 90% of their time indoors. Great spatial and temporal variations in human exposure to PM2.5 have recently been reported. This review aims to identify the main research areas that have attracted recent attention, any possible gaps in the measurements of PM2.5 in various microenvironments, and the relationships between indoor and outdoor concentrations. This study also provides recommendations for further studies on PM2.5 measurement methods and exposure levels. To achieve these goals, this review included articles published online from 2003 to 2013 in the Science Direct and Web of Science databases. In the initial screening stage, 113 abstracts selected while 61 articles were remained for full review. The reviewed studies consistently showed positive correlations between indoor and outdoor PM2.5. Sulfate/sulfur concentrations were used intensively for calculating the infiltration factor (FINF). The higher FINF indicated high infiltration of outdoor PM2.5 into indoor areas. Great percentage (42%) of the reviewed filter–based studies was conducted in Europe, followed by a similar amount (38%) in the USA, and 20% in Asia, indicating a lack in PM2.5 research in other parts of the world. It was difficult to conclude that ambient fixed–site monitoring provided accurate estimations of actual exposure to PM2.5– Studies shown trends of higher personal concentrations compared to indoor and outdoor ones. Higher indoor levels of OC (organic carbon), compared to outdoor levels, were consistently reported. The opposite trend was true for EC (elemental carbon), and there were higher indoor OC/EC ratios than outdoor OC/EC ratios. There was a consistent general trend of a high (r>0.70) correlation between indoor and outdoor EC, while the correlation between indoor and outdoor OC was much weaker (r=022–0.75). The higher indoor OC/EC ratios, compared to the outdoor OC/EC ratios, reflects multiple sources of indoor OC. Sulfate (SO42–), nitrate (NO3–), and ammonium (NH4+) were primary contributors to PM2.5 mass.

2015
Talas, Ezgi | Duman, Muhammet | Küçüksezgin, Filiz | Brennan, Michael L. | Raineault, Nicole A.
Investigations carried out on surface sediments collected from the Anaximander mud volcanoes in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea to determine sedimentary and geochemical properties. The sediment grain size distribution and geochemical contents were determined by grain size analysis, organic carbon, carbonate contents and element analysis. The results of element contents were compared to background levels of Earth’s crust. The factors that affect element distribution in sediments were calculated by the nine push core samples taken from the surface of mud volcanoes by the E/V Nautilus. The grain size of the samples varies from sand to sandy silt. Enrichment and Contamination factor analysis showed that these analyses can also be used to evaluate of deep sea environmental and source parameters. It is concluded that the biological and cold seep effects are the main drivers of surface sediment characteristics from the Anaximander mud volcanoes.

2015
Mülayim, A. | Balkıs, H.
Rapana venosa (Valenciennes, 1846) and Eriphia verrucosa (Forskal, 1775) are the dominant benthic invertebrate species along the Thrace Coast of the western Black Sea. The aim of this study was to determine toxic metal (Hg, Cr, Cd, and Pb) accumulation levels in these species, as well as within littoral sediments from this area. Our results showed that all of the metals, except for Cd, were below that in average shale. The measured accumulation levels were mostly within the range of what is naturally found within the earth’s crust. However, some study stations did have increased concentrations, indicating anthropogenic pollution in these areas. The Cd contents of E. verrucosa collected from all our study stations were well above the limits set by the Turkish Food Codex, especially in Kıyıköy, whereas Pb content was close to the limit at all stations and exceeded the limit in Kıyıköy, but Hg content was below the limit at all stations. Cd content of R. venosa exceeded the limit only in Kumköy. Pb content was below the limit, and Hg was at or slightly above the limit at all stations.

The Antillean manatee inhabits coastal regions of North and Northeastern Brazil and currently is considered an endangered species in the country. Aiming to gather information for the development of public policies focusing on the conservation of manatees, the National Center for Research and Conservation of Aquatic Mammals of the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity has been rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing these mammals since the 1980s. Over the last 36years, 40 manatees were released by the CMA/ICMBio and four of them were rescued again due to debris ingestion. Two of these manatees died and the other two were taken back into captivity for a new rehabilitation process. The four mammals had confirmed diagnosis of plastic debris ingestion. These findings demonstrate that the environment where the manatees live after being released had a significant amount of garbage which may hinder the success of the species conservation in Brazil.

2015
Cerezo, Maria Isabel | Agusti, Susana
One way organic pollutants reach remote oceanic regions is by atmospheric transport. During the Malaspina-2010 expedition, across the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, we analyzed the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) effects on oceanic microbial food webs. We performed perturbation experiments adding PAHs to classic dilution experiments. The phytoplankton growth rates were reduced by more than 5 times, being Prochlorococcus spp. the most affected. 62% of the experiments showed a reduction in the grazing rates due to the presence of PAHs. For the remaining experiments, grazing usually increased likely due to cascading effects. We identified changes in the slope of the relation between the growth rate and the dilution fraction induced by the pollutants, moving from no grazing to V-shape, or to negative slope, indicative of grazing increase by cascade effects and alterations of the grazers' activity structure. Our perturbation experiments indicate that PAHs could influence the structure oceanic food-webs structure.
