Inactivation of phosphorus in the sediment of the Lake Taihu by lanthanum modified zeolite using laboratory studies النص الكامل

Release of phosphorus (P) from sediment to overlying water has to be dealt with to address algal blooms in eutrophic lakes. In this study, the sediment from the Lake Taihu was amended with lanthanum modified zeolite (LMZ) to reduce P release under different pH, temperature and anaerobic conditions. LMZ performed well, to decreasing P concentration in Lake Taihu water in the presence of sediment. The EPC₀ value, the critical P concentration at which there was neither P adsorption nor P release, was lowered by adding LMZ, suggesting that amendment with LMZ could diminish the risk of P release from the sediment. From the Langmuir isotherm model, the adsorption capacity of phosphate by LMZ was estimated to be 64.1 mgP/g. The LMZ-amended sediment had a higher content of stable P forms (HCl-P and Res-P) and a lower content of P forms with a high (NH₄Cl-P and BD-P) or medium-high (NaOH-P and Org-P) risk of release, when compared with the original sediment. The fractionation simulates conditions which release potentially mobile P which can then be simply re-bound to LMZ. At high pH (>9.0), anaerobic condition or high temperature promoted the liberation of P from sediment. However, P release could be greatly inhibited by LMZ. In addition, although Mn²⁺ and NH₄⁺ ions were released from sediment under the anaerobic condition, the release could also be hindered by adding LMZ. LMZ is a promising P inactivation agent to manage eutrophication in the sediment of Lake Taihu.

Nitrogen (N) deposition poses a severe risk to global terrestrial ecosystems, and managing this threat is an important focus for air pollution science and policy. To understand and manage the impacts of N deposition, we need metrics which accurately reflect N deposition pressure on the environment, and are responsive to changes in both N deposition and its impacts over time. In the UK, the metric typically used is a measure of total N deposition over 1–3 years, despite evidence that N accumulates in many ecosystems and impacts from low-level exposure can take considerable time to develop. Improvements in N deposition modelling now allow the development of metrics which incorporate the long-term history of pollution, as well as current exposure. Here we test the potential of alternative N deposition metrics to explain vegetation compositional variability in British semi-natural habitats. We assembled 36 individual datasets representing 48,332 occurrence records in 5479 quadrats from 1683 sites, and used redundancy analyses to test the explanatory power of 33 alternative N metrics based on national pollutant deposition models. We find convincing evidence for N deposition impacts across datasets and habitats, even when accounting for other large-scale drivers of vegetation change. Metrics that incorporate long-term N deposition trajectories consistently explain greater compositional variance than 1–3 year N deposition. There is considerable variability in results across habitats and between similar metrics, but overall we propose that a thirty-year moving window of cumulative deposition is optimal to represent impacts on plant communities for application in science, policy and management.

The growing production and extensive use of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) have led to an increase in their environmental distribution and human exposure. Developmental toxicity is a major concern of OPFRs' adverse health effects. However, the impact of OPFRs exposure on vascular development and the toxicity pathway for developmental defects are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of exposure to tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP), a frequently detected OPFR, on early vascular development, and the possible role of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2)-dependent angiogenic pathway in TDCPP's vascular toxicity. TDCPP exposure at 300 and 500 μg/L impeded the growth of intersegmental vessels (ISV), a type of microvessels, as early as 30 hpf. Consistently, a similar pattern of decreased extension and remodeling of common cardinal vein (CCV), a typical macrovessel, was observed in zebrafish at 48 hpf and 72 hpf. Developing vasculature in zebrafish was more sensitive than general developmental parameters to TDCPP exposure. The expression of genes related to VEGF signaling pathway dose-dependently decreased in TDCPP-treated larvae. In in vitro experiments using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), the increased cell proliferation induced by VEGF was suppressed by TDCPP exposure in a dose-dependent fashion. In addition, we found a repression of Nrf2 expression and activity in TDCPP-treated larvae and HUVECs. Strikingly, the application of CDDO-Im, a potent Nrf2 activator, enhanced VEGF and protected against defective vascular development in zebrafish. Our results reveal that vascular impairment is a sensitive index for early exposure to TDCPP, which could be considered in the environmental risk assessment of OPFRs. The identification of Nrf2-mediating VEGF pathway provides new insight into the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) of OPFRs.

The application of biochar in remediation and recovery of heavy metals and/or organic contaminants in water and soil is increasing. However, the adverse effect of biochar to aquatic organisms has not received enough attention. In this study, we conducted a study on the biotoxicity of biochar pyrolyzed from pine needle under oxygen-limited conditions. The toxicity of biochar was expressed with the following endpoints: cell growth, chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), reactive oxygen species (ROS), superoxide dismutase (SOD) content of Scenedesmus obliquus (S. obliquus) and the luminescence of Photobacterium phosphoreum (P. phosphoreum). Here, the effect of free radicals (FRs) contained in biochar was stressed. Our results show that the toxicity of biochar is significantly correlated with the concentration of FRs in biochar particles. Meanwhile, we found the FRs-containing biochar could induce the production of acellular ROS (such as ·OH) in water, which would also induce the production of interior cellular ROS in aquatic organisms. Our findings provide a new insight into the mechanism of toxicity aroused by biochar applications and aid in understanding its potential ecological risk.

Regional specification of PM2.5 pollution characteristics is crucial for pollution control and policymaking. Spatiotemporal variations of six criteria air pollutants and influencing factors in China were studied using hourly concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, CO, and O3 from 2015 to 2016. China was categorized into eight regions: north-east, northern coastland, eastern coastland, southern coastland, Yellow River middle reaches, Yangtze River middle reaches, south-west, and north-west. The 29 exemplary cities in China were also researched. It was found that the PM2.5 concentration in the northern coastland (Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei–Shandong) was the highest (72.28 μg.m−3) among the eight regions, particularly in the city of Baoding, Hebei, which had an annual average PM2.5 concentration of 98.53 μg.m−3. Average PM2.5 concentrations in 2015 and 2016 of China were 50.16 μg.m−3 and 46.61 μg.m−3, respectively. Compared with 2015, the PM2.5 concentration decreased by 8.41% in 2016, the decline of PM2.5 in summer was the largest, followed by autumn, spring and winter. The average mean PM2.5 concentrations of the 29 exemplary cities in 2015 and 2016 were 54.66 μg.m−3 and 48.37 μg.m−3, respectively, exceeding the limit for grade 2 of the national standards (35 μg.m−3). National air pollution distribution has exploded geographically with influence of regional economic factors. Gaseous pollutant as well as geographical and socio-economic conditions influenced PM2.5 emissions. Effects of these factors on PM2.5 emissions varied across regions and decreased continuously from the northern region to the south-west and eastern coastland regions. This paper clearly identifies the regional characteristics and distribution of PM2.5, focusing on the effects of gaseous pollutant, geography and socio-economic development. Secondary transformation and vehicle exhaust across regions should be further studied.

Several organic contaminants (OCs) have been detected in bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) nestling (eaglet) plasma in the upper Midwestern United States. Despite frequent and relatively high concentrations of OCs in eaglets, little is understood about potential biological effects associated with exposure. We screened an existing database of OC concentrations in eaglet plasma collected from the Midwestern United States against bioactivity information from the ToxCast database. ToxCast bioactivity information consists of concentrations expected to elicit responses across a range of biological space (e.g. cellular, developmental, etc.) obtained from a series of high throughput assays. We calculated exposure—activity ratios (EAR) by calculating the ratio of plasma concentrations to concentrations available in ToxCast. Bioactivity data were not available for all detected OCs. Therefore, our analysis provides estimates of potential bioactivity for 19 of the detected OCs in eaglet plasma. Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) EAR values were consistently the highest among all study areas. Maximum EAR values were ≥1 for PFOS, perfluorononanoic acid, and bisphenol A in 99.7, 0.53 and 0.26% of samples, indicating that some plasma concentrations were greater than what may be expected to elicit biological responses. About 125 gene targets, indicative of specific biological pathways, were identified as potentially being affected. Inhibition of several CYP genes, involved in xenobiotic metabolism, were most consistently identified. Other identified biological responses have potential implications for motor coordination, cardiac functions, behavior, and blood circulation. However, it is unclear what these results mean for bald eagles, given that ToxCast data are generated using mammalian-based endpoints. Despite uncertainties and limitations, this method of screening environmental data can be useful for informing future monitoring or research focused on understanding the occurrence and effects of OCs in bald eagles and other similarly-positioned trophic species.

Aerosol particulate matter with dynamic diameter smaller than 2.5 μm (PM₂.₅) is the main cause for haze pollution in China. As a dominant precursor of PM₂.₅, SO₂ emitted from industrial process is now strictly controlled by using limestone/gypsum Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization (WFGD) system in China. However, a phenomenon that fine particle derived from WFGD is recently addressed, and is suggested to be a potential source of primary PM₂.₅. Herein, a first investigation into the particle generation mechanism in WFGD system is conducted with a novel droplet (containing particles) drying and breakage model. The proposed model considers a random and porous crust instead of the previous regular crust assumption, and is verified by comparing the modeling results with measurements. An orthogonal test with four factors and three levels is carried out through modeling calculation, and flue gas temperature (Tg) in the inlet is found to be a governing parameter for PM₂.₅ yields in WFGD. With Tg in range of 120–160 °C, PM₂.₅ yields in desulfurizing tower can reach a maximum value at ∼2 × 10⁸ cm⁻³ under typical WFGD condition. To avoid this situation and reduce the PM₂.₅ generation, Tg is suggested to be lower than 120 °C. Additionally, a new insight of the elimination effect of gas-gas heater (GGH) on “gypsum rain” in WFGD system is provided.

A comprehensive spatio-vertical survey of short-chain (SCCPs, C10-13) and medium-chain (MCCPs, C14-17) chlorinated paraffins (CPs) was performed in surface and core soils from Chinese nation-wide agricultural lands in 2016, and a total of 48 congener groups were measured. The shorter carbon chain C10-11 in SCCP and C14-15 in MCCP homologue groups, and the lower chlorinated congeners (Cl5-7) for both CP groups were predominant. The ∑SCCP and ∑MCCP concentrations in surface soils ranged from 39 to 1609 ng/g and 127–1969 ng/g, dry weight (dw), respectively. The spatial distribution trend showed that SCCP congener groups with relatively low octanol-water partition coefficient (KOW) and octanol-air partition coefficient (KOA) are uniformly distributed across surface soils compared to MCCP congener groups. Significant relationships were observed between the spatial variation of SCCP concentrations and the driving factors responsible for dispersion and deposition. The distribution behavior of SCCPs and MCCPs in highland and plain surface soils showed an increasing trend of MCCP concentrations with elevation, indicating the “mountain cold-trapping effect”. Vertical distribution profile revealed similar homologue group composition patterns of SCCP and MCCP congener groups as those of surface soils. Furthermore, the penetration potential ratios (r) of chlorine and carbon atoms of CPs demonstrated that the lower chlorinated (Cl5-7) and the shorter carbon chain (C10-13) congener groups are more prone to vertical movement into deeper soil layers compared to the longer carbon chain (C14-17) and highly chlorinated (Cl8-10) congener groups.

To get an overview about distribution, levels and temporal trends of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) and halogenated flame retardants (HFR) of emerging concern, different types of environmental samples archived in the German Environment Specimen Bank as well as fish filet samples from the Arctic (n = 13) and Antarctica (n = 5) were analysed for 43 substances (24 PBDE, 19 HFR) using a multi-column clean-up and GC-API-MS/MS or GC-MS. Sample types were herring gull egg (n = 3), blue mussel (n = 3) and eelpout filet (n = 3) from the German North- and Baltic Sea, bream filet (n = 7), zebra mussel (n = 6) and suspended particulate matter (SPM, n = 7) from German freshwater ecosystems as well as tree leaves (n = 9)/shoots (n = 10), soil (n = 4), earthworm (n = 4) and deer liver (n = 7) as representatives of German terrestrial ecosystems. PBDE and emerging HFR were present in each investigated matrices from Germany and Polar regions showing their widespread distribution. The presence in Arctic and Antarctic fish samples confirms their long-range transport potential. Average concentrations of total emerging HFR were highest in SPM (26 ng g⁻¹ dry weight (dw)), zebra mussel (10 ng g⁻¹ dw) and herring gull egg (2.6 ng g⁻¹ dw). Lowest levels were measured in fish filet samples from Antarctica (0.02 ng g⁻¹ dw). Average total PBDE concentrations were highest in bream filet (154 ng g⁻¹), herring gull egg (61 ng g⁻¹ dw), SPM (21 ng g⁻¹ dw), and zebra mussel 18 (ng g⁻¹) and lowest in deer liver (0.04 ng g⁻¹ dw). The patterns of non-fauna terrestrial samples (leaves, shoots, soil) as well as SPM were dominated by DBDPE and BDE209. Elevated proportions of DPTE and in most cases the absence of DBDPE characterized all fauna samples with the exception of Polar samples. Overall, emerging HFR appeared to be less bioaccumulative than PBDE. Temporal trends were generally decreasing with few exceptions such as DBDPE.

Antidepressant drugs such as Venlafaxine (VFX) and O-desmethylvenlafaxine (ODMVFX) are emerging contaminants that are commonly detected in aquatic environments, since conventional wastewater treatment plants are unable to completely remove them. They can be precursors of hazardous by-products, such as the carcinogenic N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), generated upon water chlorination, as they contain the dimethylamino moiety, necessary for the formation of NDMA. In this study, the capability of three white rot fungi (Trametes versicolor, Ganoderma lucidum and Pleurotus ostreatus) to remove both antidepressants from water and to decrease NDMA formation potential was investigated. Furthermore, transformation by-products (TPs) generated along the treatment process were elucidated and also correlated with their NDMA formation potential.Very promising results were obtained for T. versicolor and G. lucidum, both being able to remove up to 100% of ODMVFX. In the case of VFX, which is very recalcitrant to conventional wastewater treatment, a 70% of removal was achieved by T. versicolor, along with a reduction in NDMA formation potential, thus decreasing the associated problems for human health and the environment. However, the NDMA formation potential remained practically constant during treatment with G. lucidum despite of the equally high VFX removal (70%). This difference was attributed to the generation of different TPs during both fungal treatments. For example, G. lucidum generated more ODMVFX, which actually has a higher NDMA formation potential than the parent compound itself.
