Metal flux measurements inform the mobility, potential bioavailability and risk of toxicity for metals in contaminated sediments and therefore is an important approach for sediment quality assessment. The binding and release of metals that contribute to the net flux is strongly influenced by the presence and behaviors of benthic organisms. Here we studied the effects of bioturbation on the mobility and efflux of metals from multi-metal contaminated sediments that inhabited by oligochaete worms or both worms and bivalves. Presence of bivalves enhanced the release of Mn, Co, Ni and Zn but not for copper and chromium, which is likely due to the high affinities of copper and chromium for the solid phase. Metals in the overlying water were primarily associated with fractions smaller than 10 kDa, and the fractionation of all metals were not affected by the presence of the bivalve. Metal fluxes attributed to different processes were also distinguished, and the bioturbation induced effluxes were substantially higher than the diffusive effluxes. Temporal variabilities in the total net effluxes of Mn, Co, Ni and Zn were also observed and were attributed to the biological activities of the bivalves. Overall, the present study demonstrated that the response of different metals to the same bioturbation behavior was different, resulting in distinct mobility and fate of the metal contaminants.

Despite the ban on new manufacture and commercial use of PCBs, municipal sewer systems continue to serve as ongoing secondary sources for contamination in receiving water bodies. Ongoing PCB sources have made it difficult to achieve desired recovery after implementation of sediment cleanup efforts. We report on a 16-month surveillance to determine the inputs, fate, and export of PCBs within a municipal waste collection/treatment system by strategic sampling of the freely-dissolved and biosolids-associated PCBs. The total PCBs entering the treatment plant was found to be 170 g/day of which 100 g/day exited the plant associated with the biosolids and 5.2 g/day was discharged in the form of freely-dissolved PCBs in the effluent. A net loss of 68 g/day was calculated for the plant, attributable to volatilization and biodegradation. Freely dissolved PCBs in the treated effluent was an order of magnitude higher than the water quality criteria for the protection of human health through fish consumption and found to be a major contributor to the dissolved concentration in the receiving river. Predicted bioaccumulation in fish from dissolved PCBs in the effluent exceeded the threshold for human consumption. The biosolids, currently land-applied as fertilizer, contained an average PCB concentration of 760 μg/kg. The sludge produced in this treatment plant is processed in large anaerobic digesters and changes to the homolog distribution point to some microbial dechlorination. Application of biosolids to clean agricultural soil resulted in a 6-fold increase in PCB levels in the earthworm E. fetida which could be eliminated by the amendment of 1% by weight of activated carbon.

Enormous research interest is devoted to fabricating three-dimensional graphene-based gels (3D GBGs) toward improved conversion of solar energy by virtue of the intrinsic properties of single graphene and 3D porous structure characteristics. Here, this concise minireview is primarily focused on the recent progress on applications of 3D GBGs, including aerogels and hydrogels, in photocatalytic degradation of pollutants from water and air, such as organic pollutants, heavy metal ions, bacteria and gaseous pollutants. In particular, the preponderances of 3D GBG photocatalysts for environmental pollutants degradation have been elaborated. Furthermore, in addition to discussing opportunities offered by 3D GBG composite photocatalysts, we also describe the existing problems and the future direction of 3D GBG materials in this burgeoning research area. It is hoped that this review could spur multidisciplinary research interest for advancing the rational utilization of 3D GBGs for practical applications in environmental remediation.

Tropospheric ozone in the surface air has become the primary atmospheric pollutant in Hangzhou, China, in recent years. Previous analysis is not enough to decode it for better regulation. Therefore, we use the traditional atmospheric model, Weather Research and Forecasting coupled with Community Multi-scale Air Quality (WRF-CMAQ), and machine learning models, Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP), Random Forest (RF) and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) to analyze and predict the ozone in the surface air in Hangzhou, China, using meteorology and air pollutants as input. We firstly quantitatively demonstrate that the dew-point deficit, instead of temperature and relative humidity, is the predominant meteorological factor in shaping tropospheric ozone. Urban heat island, daily direct solar radiation time, wind speed and wind direction play trivial role in impacting tropospheric ozone. NO₂ is the primary influential factors both for hourly ozone and daily O₃-8 h due to the titration effect. The most environmental-friendly way to mitigate the ozone pollution is to lower the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with the highest ozone formation potentials. We deduce that the tropospheric ozone formation process tends to be not only non-linear but also non-smooth. Compared with the traditional atmospheric models, machine learning, whose characteristics are rapid convergence, short calculating time, adaptation of forecasting episodes, small program memory, higher accuracy and less cost, is able to predict tropospheric ozone more accurately.

Studies regarding the effect of environmental factors on the environmental behaviour and potential toxicity of nanoplastics (NPs) are limited but important. In this study, four polystyrene NPs with different functional groups and charges (PS, PS-COOH, n-PSNH2, p-PSNH2) were selected to investigate the effect of humic acid (HA) and salinity on their aggregation behaviour and toxicity. The results showed that salinity significantly accelerated the aggregation of the four NPs, while HA mainly exerted a stabilizing effect on the three negatively charged NPs. In contrast, the positively charged p-PSNH2 aggregated significantly at first but remained stable as HA concentration further increased. The joint effect mainly depended on their concentration ratio. The aggregation phenomena can be explained by the Derjaguin - Landau - Verwey - Overbeek (DLVO) theory. Also, the acute toxicity of NPs on Daphnia magna was affected by the surface charge of NPs, and the positively charged p-PSNH2 showed the lowest toxicity among the selected NPs. Furthermore, the presence of HA effectively alleviated the toxicity of PS and p-PSNH2, as the survival rates increased from 15% to 45%–95% and 100% respectively. Our results demonstrate that the surface properties of NPs significantly influence their aggregation and toxicity.

The challenge of sludge digester liquor treatment is its high ammonium nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) concentration. Early reports found that complete ammonia oxidation (comammox) was not present and anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) was difficult to achieve in most sludge digester liquor treatments. In this study, NH₄⁺-N removal by cooperation between partial-nitrification, comammox, and anammox processes was achieved in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for sludge digester liquor treatment. The results showed that 2100–2200 mg/L of NH₄⁺-N was removed in the SBR with 98.82% removal efficiency. In addition, 55.11% of NH₄⁺-N was converted to nitrite nitrogen (NO₂⁻-N) by partial-nitrification, 25.43% of NH₄⁺-N was converted to nitrate nitrogen (NO₃⁻-N) by comammox, and 18.28% of NH₄⁺-N was removed by anammox. During the operation, in the SBR, the relative abundance of the dominant ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (Chitinophagaceae) was 18.89%, that of the dominant anammox bacteria (Candidatus Kuenenia) was 0.10%, and that of the dominant comammox bacteria (Nitrospira) was 0.20%. Therefore, the high nitrogen removal efficiency in this system was considered the result of the combination of the three processes. These results showed that comammox and anammox could play very important roles in nitrogen transformation and energy-saving in nitrogen removal systems.

Particulate organic matter (POM) significantly affects the distribution of heavy metals in contaminated soil. However, the effect of POM on the fate of heavy metals during in situ-aided phytostabilization of waste slag is unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the distributions of heavy metals such as Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd in the POM fractions at a zinc smelting waste slag site under in situ-aided phytostabilization after five years. The results showed that the litters and residues of four plants―Arundo donax, Broussonetia papyrifera, Cryptomeria fortunei, and Robinia pseudoacacia―decomposed to form different POM size fractions. The percentage of the 0.05–0.25 mm POM size fraction was the highest, followed by the >1 mm and 0.5–1 mm POM size fractions, and that of the 0.25–0.5 mm POM size fraction was the lowest. The masses of POM derived from the four plants were in the following order: C. fortunei > B. papyrifera > A. donax > R. pseudoacacia. The contents, enrichment coefficients, and mass loads of heavy metals such as Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd in the POM increased with decreasing POM size, and those in the 0.05–0.25 mm POM size fraction were the highest. The mass load of heavy metals in the POM occurred in the following order: Cu > Cd > Zn > Pb. The surfaces of the POM with coarser and smaller size fractions were smoother and rougher, respectively, and the smaller POM size fractions had larger specific surface areas. The main functional groups in the different POM size fractions were –COOH, –OH, CO, CC, C–H, Si–O, and –CH₃. The POM fractions played a significant role in determining the distribution of heavy metals in the revegetated waste slag. These findings have important implications for aided phytostabilization, which significantly influences the fate and speciation of heavy metals at the phytoremediation site.

Stormwater is viewed as an alternative resource to mitigate water shortages. However, stormwater reuse is constrained due to the presence of many toxic pollutants such as hydrocarbons. Effective mitigation requires robust mathematical models for stormwater quality prediction based on an understanding of pollutant processes. However, the rise in global temperatures will impose changes to pollutant processes. This study has proposed a new perspective on modelling the build-up process of hydrocarbons, with a focus on volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Among organic compounds, VOCs are the most susceptible to changes as a result of global warming due to their volatility. Seven VOCs, namely, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, para-xylene, meta-xylene, ortho-xylene and styrene in road dust were investigated. The outcomes are expected to lay the foundation to overcoming the limitations in current modelling approaches such as not considering the influence of temperature and volatility, on the build-up process. A new conceptualisation is proposed for the classical build-up model by mathematically defining the volatility of VOCs in terms of temperature. Uncertainty in the re-conceptualised build-up model was quantified and was used to understand the build-up patterns in the future scenarios of global warming. Results indicated that for the likely scenarios, the variability in VOCs build-up gradually increases at the beginning of the dry period and then rapidly increases after around seven days, while the build-up reaches a near-constant value in a shorter dry period, limiting the variability. These initial research outcomes need to be further investigated given the expected impacts of global warming into the future.

The Wiśniówka rock strip mining area (south-central Poland) with quartzite quarries, acid water bodies and tailings piles is one of the most unique acid mine drainage (AMD) sites throughout the world. This is due to the occurrence of enormous amounts of pyrite unknown in sedimentary formations worldwide. Of the two mineralization zones, one that is the most abundant in arsenical pyrite occurs in the lowermost Upper Cambrian formation of the Podwiśniówka quarry. The As-rich pyritiferous clastic rocks are exposed as a result of deep quartzite extraction during 2013–2014. In addition, the clayey-silty shale interbeds are enriched in rare earth element (REE) minerals. The mining operation left an acidic lake with a pH of about 2.4–2.6 and increased contents of sulfates, metal(loid)s and REE. The Podwiśniówka pyrite-rich waste material was stacked up in many places of the mining area giving rise to strongly acidic spills that jeopardized the neighboring environment. One of these unexplored tailings piles was a source of extremely sulfate- and metal(loid)-rich pools with unusual enrichments in As (up to 1548 mg L⁻¹) and REE (up to 24.84 mg L⁻¹). These distinctly exceeded those previously reported in the Wiśniówka area. A broad scope of geochemical, mineralogical and petrographic methods was used to document these specific textural and mineralogical properties of pyrite facilitating its rapid oxidation. The pyrite oxidation products reacted with REE-bearing minerals releasing these elements into acid water bodies. Statistical methods were employed to connect the obtained tailings pool hydrogeochemical data with those derived from this and the previous studies of the Podwiśniówka and Wiśniówka Duża acid pit lakes. In contrast to metal(loid) profiles, the characteristic shale-normalized REE concentration patterns turned out to be more suitable for solving different AMD issues including provenance of mine waste material in the tailings pile examined.

This study developed a novel Hg(II) immobilization strategy by firstly incubating algal cells in high-phosphate cultures for surface modification, followed by obtaining the P-rich biomass as adsorbents for enhanced Hg(II) removal and then charring the Hg-loaded biomass to prevent leaching of phosphate and to immobilize Hg(II). For algal surface modification, Scenedesmus obtusus XJ-15 were cultivated under different P concentrations and obtained the highest sites concentration of surface phosphoryl functional groups in 80 mg L⁻¹ P cultures. For Hg(II) adsorption, biomass from 80 mg L⁻¹ P cultures (B-80) achieved the highest saturated sorption capacity of 95 mg g⁻¹ fitting to Langmuir isotherm model under the optimum pH of 5.0. For charring stabilization, the Hg-loaded B-80 was calcinated under different temperatures, and the product obtained from 300 °C charring showed the lowest Hg(II) leaching rate without P release. Moreover, FT-IR and XPS analysis indicate that the surge of surface phosphoryl functional groups dominated the enhancement of Hg(II) sorption and also Hg(II) charring immobilization. The above results suggested that the developed strategy is promising for both phosphate and mercury removal from water and for co-immobilization of P and Hg(II) to prevent leaching.
