Performance Evaluation of Fixed Bed of Nano Calcium Oxide Synthesized from a Gastropod Shell (Achatina achatina) in Hexavalent Chromium Abstraction from Aqua System النص الكامل

The shell of a gastropod (Achatina Achatina) was used as a precursor for the synthesis of nano calcium oxide (NC) via the solâgel technique. The NC was characterized and the performance evaluation in chromium (Cr) (VI) abstraction was assessed in a fixed bed. The operating characteristics of the NC-Cr (VI) system were analysed with the mass transfer model and the mass transfer zone parameters were found to fluctuate with changes in the initial Cr (VI) concentration. The evaluation of the equilibrium data, generated from the fixed bed studies, showed that the sorption of Cr (VI) occurred via monolayer adsorption mechanism, and the monolayer sorption capacity was 833.33Â mg/g. Different kinetic models (i.e., AdamsâBohart, Thomas, Wolborska, and YoonâNelson models) were applied to experimental data to predict the breakthrough curves and to determine the parameters of the column useful for process design. The kinetic analysis showed that the Yoon and Nelson model had the best fitting of the experimental data. The data obtained for Cr (VI) removal, when the NC bed height was optimized, were well described by bed depth service time model.

The aim of this study is to assess the premature mortality risks caused by exposure to particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) and ozone elevated concentrations for the years 2000, 2005, and 2020 in East Asia. The spatial distributions and temporal variations of PM2.5 and ozone concentrations are simulated using the Models-3 Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System coupled with the Regional Emission Inventory in Asia. The premature mortality risks caused by exposure to PM2.5 and ozone are calculated based on a relative risk (RR) value of 1.04 (95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.01â1.08) for PM2.5 concentrations above the annual mean limit of 10 μg mâ3 taken from the World Health OrganizationâAir Quality Guideline and based on a RR value of 1.003 (95 % CI: 1.001â1.004) for ozone concentration above 35 ppb of the SOMO35 index (the sum of ozone daily maximum 8-h mean concentrations above 35 ppb). We demonstrate one of the implications of the policy making in the area of environmental atmospheric management in East Asia by highlighting the annual premature mortalities associated with exposure to PM2.5 concentrations that just meet an annual mean concentration of 10 μg mâ3, as well as ozone concentrations that have a daily zero SOMO35 index in vulnerable places. Our results point to a growing health risk that may endanger human life in East Asia. We find that the effect of PM2.5 on human health is greater than the effect of ozone for the age group of 30 years and above. We estimate the corresponding premature mortality due to the effects of both ozone and PM2.5 in East Asia for the years 2000 and 2005 to be around 316,000 and 520,000 cases, respectively. For future scenarios of the year 2020, policy succeed case, reference, and policy failed case, the estimated annual premature mortality rates are 451,000, 649,000, and 1,035,000 respectively.

The use of plant-derived sorbent was investigated as a remediation strategy for low-energy intertidal wetlands contaminated by crude oil spills. Effectiveness of plant-derived sorbent as a wicking agent was evaluated in microcosms simulating intertidal wetlands. Microcosms were designed to impose three different oil penetration depths (0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 cm), two different tidal amplitudes (±5 and ±10 cm above oil-contaminated surface), and two different types of sorbents (raw bagasse and hydrophobic-treated bagasse). We observed that the use of plant-derived sorbent was beneficial not only in removing oil but also in preventing further contamination. Oil penetration depth and tidal amplitude both negatively influenced the effectiveness of the sorbent. Effectiveness of the hydrophobic-treated sorbent was always higher than that of untreated one at any given oil penetration depth and tidal amplitude. Effectiveness of hydrophobic-treated sorbent was relatively low compared to that of raw bagasse. The most plausible explanation is that oil wicking mainly occurred during low tide. From a cost-effectiveness point of view, we suggest the use of raw bagasse immediately after an oil spill for remediation of low-energy intertidal wetlands. The observed results imply that this technique has potential to stimulate biodegradation by wicking oil out of contaminated intertidal wetlands subsurface to the aerobic zone where biodegradation can take place.

In domestic wastewater, bacterial physiology controls cell production (growth, replication) and cell maintenance, determining how energy is allocated between these two processes. The aim here was to develop a method to quantify these cellular processes so that the bacterial physiological state could be manipulated to lower this source of pollution. We simultaneously used the incorporation of radiolabelled thymidine into DNA (a measure of new cell synthesis) and leucine into protein in wastewater to quantitatively distinguish bacterial growth from maintenance processes. We found that DNA and protein syntheses were coupled in wastewater after substrate enrichment (with glucose or acetate)âbalanced growth. Once the substrate was depleted, the two processes became uncoupledâunbalanced growth. In this physiological state, the bacteria were synthesising protein, but fewer bacteria were replicating. More energy was allocated to cell maintenance than replication. A mean Leu/TdR ratio of 7.4 was determined for wastewater and was similar to natural aquatic ecosystems. As the bacterial growth rate decreased, the Leu/TdR ratios increased. We show how the simultaneous measurement of [³H]Leu and [³H]TdR quantitatively distinguishes balanced from unbalanced growth. Low [³H]Leu/[³H]TdR ratios indicated bacteria were physiologically stressed, an ideal state for biological wastewater treatment processes (WWTP) as the bacteria divert more energy to maintenance activities instead of growth. Leu/TdR ratios of 70 have been recorded in natural aquatic ecosystems which suggests WWTP have potential to be manipulated to achieve much higher Leu/TdR ratios than we report here. Changes to plant operation to improve operation efficiency include finding the optimum rate of substrate (pollution supply) or alternating aerobic and anaerobic periods to maximise the Leu/TdR ratio to achieve less biomass production for land disposal and more cost-effective operation that generates less pollution in the effluent.

Arsenic occurs in the earth's crust in various chemical forms as a result of both natural and anthropogenic sources. Soil chemical extractions may help understand As availability, as well as the possibility of As entry into the food chain. Phytoextraction has been proposed as a technology for remediation of As-contaminated soils. The study was carried out to assess the bioavailability of As by extractants and to compare the performance of castor bean and sunflower for As removal from soils. Two soils were contaminated with Na2HAsO4.7H2O adding 35 and 150 mg As dm−3 soil. Arsenic availability was assessed using the following extractants: tri-distilled water, ammonium sulfate, ammonium phosphate, ammonium oxalateâ+âoxalic acid, organic acids mixture, Mehlich-1, and United States Environmental Protection Agency 3051. The roots and shoots of 35-day-old plants were collected and dry matter yield as well as As concentration were determined. The accumulation of As in shoot was also calculated in order to evaluate the plants potential for As phytoextraction. The extractants tested were efficient to assess the concentration of available As in soil. Addition of As to the soils did not cause severe toxicity in plants, although the dose 150 mg As dm−3 soil decreased shoot and root yield in both species. Castor bean was less sensitive to As than sunflower, but none of the species had hyperaccumulation characteristics. These species can be used for revegetation of areas contaminated with As up to safe limit of 150 mg As dm−3 soil, as proposed by CONAMA for industrial areas in Brazil.

Anionic surfactants, the earliest and the most common surfactants in detergent and cosmetic product formulations contribute significantly to the pollution profile of the ecosystem. Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS), a major chemical constituent of detergents, forms an imperative group of anionic surfactants. Bioremediation of LAS by conventional processes such as activated sludge is ineffective due to the low kinetics of degradation by unsuitable organisms and foam production. Hence this study was focused on isolating and characterizing indigenous LAS-degrading bacteria from soil. Twenty different LAS-degrading bacteria were isolated from detergent-contaminated soil by enrichment culture technique and degradation efficiency was assessed by Methylene Blue Active Substances (MBAS) assay and by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The most efficient LAS-degrading isolates, L9 (81.33 ± 0.7) and L12 (81.81 ± 0.8), were selected and identified as Pseudomonas nitroreducens (MTCC 10463) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC 10462). The 16S rDNA sequences of the isolates were deposited in NCBI GenBank under the accession numbers HQ 271083 (L9) and HQ 271084 (L12). The isolates were capable of degrading 0.05 g/l LAS at 25 °C and pH 7.0–7.5. Presence of a solid support caused biofilm formation which in turn enhanced LAS degradation. The isolates tend to display diauxic growth with alternate carbon source such as dextrose. These isolates also have the capability to degrade other xenobiotics like hydrocarbons and pesticides. Since xenobiotic pollutants in nature occur as a mixture of compounds rather than single pollutants, the potential of these two indigenous LAS-degrading isolates to degrade multiple xenobiotics gains relevance.

We determined normal plasma butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), carboxylesterase (CbE using α-NA substrate), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities in Caiman latirostris and Phrynops hilarii to obtain reference values for organophosphorus (OP) pesticide monitoring. BChE and CbE sensitivity to malaoxon was also evaluated. C. latirostris (N = 12; six males and six females) and P. hilarii (N = 12; seven males and five females) were obtained from the programs Yacaré (Entre Ríos Province, Argentina) and Zoo of Córdoba (Córdoba Province, Argentina). Mean total (female and male) plasma BChE activity was significantly different between reptile species, ranging between 0.337 ± 0.085 μmol min−1 ml−1 of plasma for C. latirostris and 0.251 ± 0.070 μmol min−1 ml−1 of plasma for P. hilarii. However, plasma CbE (α-NA) and GST activities were significantly higher in P. hilarii (4.81 ± 1.00 and 0.145 ± 0.045 μmol min−1 ml−1 of plasma, respectively) than in C. latirostris (0.57 ± 0.20 and 0.059 ± 0.013 μmol min−1 ml−1 of plasma, respectively). No significant differences in B-esterase and GST activities were detected between sexes, except CbE (α-NA) for C. latirostris. IC50 values for BChE and CbE (α-NA) suggested different sensitivity levels between species and between sexes. The results demonstrate that plasma esterase activity varied between species, but not between sexes (except CbE for C. latirostris). The in vitro inhibition tests indicated that CbE (α-NA) is more sensitive to inhibition than BChE. C. latirostris may be the reptile species most vulnerable to field pesticide exposure because this reptile presents the lowest CbE activity levels and its B-esterase levels seem more sensitive to OP.

Comparison of event-based precipitation collected during 1 year showed that samples from a Yankee Environmental Systems collector had significantly higher volume, higher concentrations, and higher deposition of all ions analyzed except PO 4 3− and NH 4 + compared to samples collected simultaneously with an Aerochem Metrics collector.

This paper presents for the first time the technological potential of novel Lantana camara-reinforced ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) composites fabricated via the melt-blending technique. The composite and L. camara were characterized using X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and deferential scanning calorimeter. L. camara was found to drastically reduce the crystallinity of EVA from 44.3 % to a minimum of 1.16 %. Immersion of the composite specimens in de-ionised water showed that moisture absorption was less significant for composites with L. camara contents less than 15 % (w/w). A maximum sorption capacity of 1.20 mol% was recorded in 42 h which is remarkable considering the hydrophobic nature of EVA with 9 % vinyl acetate. L. camara and the composite removed 96 % and 88 % para-nitrophenol from water, respectively.

Chlorophyll fluorescence spectral analysis permits detection, monitoring, and evaluation of abiotic stresses upon healthy plants using illumination of a light source in the UV–VIS spectral range. This technique indirectly assesses the amount of physiological stress caused by photosynthetic damage, specifically damage to photosystem II, in plants. The objective of this study was to detect the toxicity of cadmium in maize plants via spectral analysis of chlorophyll fluorescence. The analysis is noninvasive and nondestructive and is used to follow the temporal evolution of changes in the chlorophyll content and physiological state of Zea mays L. seedlings under cadmium stress. Conventional techniques were also used to evaluate the dry matter production and Cd accumulation in plant leaves. Plants exhibited a notable reduction in dry matter production and chlorophyll levels with the administration of increasing doses of Cd in the nutrient solution. The fluorescence analysis was sensitive to changes caused by Cd in maize plants, detecting damage caused by different treatments before visual symptoms were observed. This technique has a practical application and produces rapid results that can be used in the evaluation of Cd-induced stress in plants and the detection of areas contaminated by this element.
