Environmental colloids play crucial roles in the transport of environmental pollutants in porous media by acting as pollutant carriers. In this work, the dispersion stability and correlated transport of kaolinite colloid were investigated as a function of solution pH, solution ionic strength, and concentration of humic acid (HA), the roles of kaolinite colloid in driving Eu(III) transport were discussed. The results showed that the dispersion of kaolinite colloid was favorable at alkaline and extremely acidic pH values, the trend of aggregation with varying pH was critically reversed at pH ∼3.2 due to the transformation of surface electrical properties. Cations with higher valence and mineral affinity showed a more significant contribution in inducing colloid aggregation, which was generally in accordance with the Schulze-Hardy rule and Hofmeister series. HA greatly increased the colloid stability by altering the surface electrostatic potential and steric effect. The Derjguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) model suggested that the electrostatic force between colloidal particles controlled the aggregation and destabilizing trend of colloid, and the theoretically calculated critical coagulation concentration was consistent with that determined from kinetic aggregation experiments. The roles of kaolinite colloid in driving Eu(III) transport varied under different conditions, and the transport behavior was highly correlated with the dispersion stability trend of colloid. These results can provide an enhanced understanding of the environmental fate of kaolinite colloid as well as commensal pollutants.

Nutrient effluents from urban and agricultural inputs have resulted in high concentrations of nitrate in freshwater ecosystems. Exposure to nitrate can be particularly threatening to aquatic organisms, but a quantitative synthesis of the overall effects on amphibians, amphipods and fish is currently unavailable. Moreover, in disturbed ecosystems, organisms are unlikely to face a single stressor in isolation, and interactions among environmental stressors can enhance the negative effects of nitrate on organisms. Here, the effects of elevated nitrate on activity level, deformity rates, hatching success, growth and survival of three taxonomic groups of aquatically respiring organisms are documented. Effect sizes were extracted from 68 studies and analysed using meta-analytical techniques. The influence of nitrate on life-stages was also assessed. A factorial meta-analysis was conducted to examine the effect of nitrate and its interaction with other ecological stressors on organismal survival. Overall, the impacts of nitrate are biased towards amphibians (46 studies) and fish (13 studies), and less is known about amphipods (five studies). We found that exposure to nitrate translates to a 79% decrease in activity, a 29% decrease in growth, and reduces survival by 62%. Nitrate exposure also increases developmental deformities but does not affect hatching success. Nitrate exposure was found to influence all life-stages except embryos. Differences in the sensitivity of nitrate among taxonomic groups tended to be negligible. The factorial meta-analysis (14 amphibians and two amphipod studies) showed that nitrate in combination with other stressors affects survival in a non-additive manner. Our results indicate that nitrate can have strong effects on aquatic organisms and can interact with other environmental stressors which compound the negative effects on survival. Overall, the impacts of nitrate and additional stressors are complex requiring a holistic approach to better conserve freshwater biodiversity in the face of ongoing global change.

Shortly after an atmospheric release, the interception of radionuclides by crop canopies represents the main uptake pathway leading to food chain contamination. The food chain models currently used in European emergency decision support systems require a large number of input parameters, which inevitably leads to high model complexity. In this study, we have established a new relationship for wet deposited radionuclides to simplify the current modelling approaches. This relationship is based on the hypothesis that the stage of plant development is the key factor governing the interception of radionuclides by crops having horizontally oriented leaves (planophile crops). The interception fraction (f) and the leaf area index normalized (fLAI) and mass normalized (fB) interception fractions were assessed for spinach (Spinacia oleracea) and radish (Raphanus sativus) at different stages of plant development and for different contamination treatments and plant densities. A database of 191 f values for Cs-137 and Th-229 was built and complemented with existing literature covering various radionuclides and crops with similar canopy structure. The overall f increased with the plant growth, while the reverse was observed for fB. The fLAI significantly decreased by doubling the contaminated rainfall deposited. Fitting a multiple linear regression to predict the f value as a function of the standing biomass (B), and the radionuclide form (anion and cation) led to a better estimation of the interception (R² = 81%) than the ECOSYS-87 model (R² = 35%). Hence, the simplified modelling approach here proposed seems to be a suitable risk assessment tool as fewer parameters will minimize the model complexity and facilitate the decision-making procedures in case of emergencies, when countermeasures need to be identified and implemented promptly.

Natural halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) with a hollow lumen are already applied in numerous fields and enter the environment in increasing quantities, which may have effects on animal and human health. However their in vivo toxicity in mammals is still largely unclear. The aim of this study is to assess acute oral toxicity of HNTs in the stomach of mice and recovery. Oral HNTs at low dose (5 mg HNTs/kg BW) for 30 days increased in daily food and water intake and promoted mouse growth with no obvious adverse effect on the stomach. The promotive effect on mouse growth disappeared after cessation of oral administration of the nanotubes. Oral HNTs for 30 days at high dose (50 mg HNTs/kg BW) induced Si and Al accumulation in the stomach, which caused oxidative stress, inflammation and iNOS-mediated damage in the organ. The damage in the stomach led to slight atrophic gastritis and reduced mouse growth. Oral HNTs-induced changes at high dose were not observed after a 30-days recovery period. The findings provided the evidence that oral HNTs-induced acute toxicity in the stomach was reversible. More importantly, this research showed that Al and Si were cleared out of the mice by hepatic excretion and renal excretion, respectively, during the recovery period. The results suggest that HNTs at low concentration in environments have no adverse effect on mice, while there are health risks to mice under severe contamination by HNTs.

The Bohai Sea is a shallow-water, semi-enclosed marginal sea of the Northwest Pacific. Since the late 1990s, it has suffered from nutrient over-enrichment. To better understand the eutrophication characteristics of this important coastal sea, we examined four survey datasets from summer (June 2011), late autumn (November 2011), winter (January 2016), and early spring (April 2018). Nutrient conditions in the Bohai Sea were subject to seasonal and regional variations. Survey-averaged N/P ratios in estuarine and nearshore areas were 20–133. In contrast, the central Bohai Sea had mean N/P ratios of 16.9 ± 3.4 in late autumn, 16.1 ± 3.0 in winter and 13.5 ± 5.8 in early spring, which are close to the traditional N:P Redfield ratio of 16. In summer, both dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) were used up in the surface waters of the central Bohai Sea, suggesting that the biological consumption of DIN and DIP may also follow the Redfield ratio. Wintertime nutrient budgets of the central Bohai Sea water were then established based on a mass balance study. Our results suggest that the adjacent North Yellow Sea supplied additional DIP to the central Bohai Sea via wintertime water intrusion, balancing terrigenous excess DIN that was introduced in summer. A water-mixing simulation combining these two nutrient sources with atmospheric nitrogen deposition suggests that eutrophication in the central Bohai Sea will likely be enhanced by the large-scale accumulation of anthropogenic nitrogen in adjacent open oceans. Such changes in nutrients may have fundamentally contributed to the recent development of algal blooms and seasonal hypoxia in the central Bohai Sea.

Both Ca deficiency and metal exposure may affect physiological and nutritional condition of breeding females altering their ability to deposit essential resources (e.g. Ca, antioxidants) into the eggs. This effect of the maternal investment into egg quality is not strictly limited to the embryonic period, but may persist after hatching, since nutrient levels in yolks can compromise nestling antioxidant status, growth and fledging success. The goal of this study was to investigate how metal pollution and Ca availability during the breeding season affect oxidative stress biomarkers and plasma biochemistry in adult female pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca). In addition, we aim to evaluate how maternal antioxidant status and body condition relate to breeding parameters and offspring oxidative balance. Females breeding in a metal-polluted area in SW Finland showed higher metal concentrations compared to the control area, although current levels were below the toxic level able to affect female physiology. In addition, Ca availability was not constraining female oxidative status and general health in the study area. Interestingly, our results suggested that antioxidant response to metals was better when Ca concentrations were high enough to cover the physiological Ca requirements in breeding females. There seems to be a subtle balance between the concentrations of Ca in the organism and the tolerance to metal-related effects that requires further research. This study supports that offspring oxidative balance and nestling development are affected by maternal body condition and antioxidant status.

Environmental exposure to arsenic is a major public health challenge worldwide. In detailing the hallmark signs of chronic arsenic exposure, previous studies have shown that epigenetic and immune dysfunction are associated with arsenic-induced skin lesions; however, knowledge regarding interactions between the mechanisms listed above is limited. In this study, a total of 106 skin samples were collected over the past 20 years. Based on the presence or absence of high arsenic exposure, the participants were divided into arsenic exposure (72) and reference (34) groups. Additionally, the arsenic exposure group was further divided into the non-cancer group (31, including skin hyperpigmentation and hyperkeratosis) and the skin cancer group (41, including Bowen’s disease, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) according to a skin histopathological examination. First, the associations among miR-155, NF-AT1 with immunological dysfunction and arsenic-induced skin lesions and carcinogenesis were confirmed using these skin samples. In the arsenic-exposed group, miR-155–5p, keratin 1(Krt1), keratin 10 (Krt10), and keratin 6c (Krt6c) were significantly increased in the skin (p < 0.05), while NF-AT1, interleukin-2 (IL-2), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) were significantly decreased (p < 0.05). Clear correlations were observed among these factors (p < 0.05). In immortalized human keratinocytes, silencing and overexpression of NF-AT1 could alter the expression and secretion of immunological dysfunction indicators (IL-2 and IFN-γ) that are induced by arsenic exposure (p < 0.05); however, miR-155–5p levels did not change significantly (p > 0.05). The miR-155–5p mimic and inhibitor could regulate the NF-AT1-mediated immunological dysfunction caused by arsenic (p < 0.05). Our study provides some limited evidence that miR-155–5p regulates the NF-AT1-mediated immunological dysfunction that is involved in the pathogenesis and carcinogenesis of arsenic. The second major finding was that Krt1 and Krt10 are markers of hyperkeratosis caused by arsenic, and Krt6c is a potential biomarker that can reflect arsenic carcinogenesis.

In the general population, chronic exposure to low-dose persistent organic pollutants (POPs), particularly organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), has been recently linked to many chronic diseases. Widespread contamination of the food chain and human adipose tissue has made avoiding exposure to these chemicals impossible; thus, alternative strategies for decreasing the chemical burden must be investigated. Recently, macronutrient intake was found to significantly modify the toxicokinetics of POPs in animal experimental studies. Thus, we evaluated whether macronutrient intake was related to serum concentrations of OCPs in healthy adults without cardio-metabolic diseases. Subjects included 1,764 adults, aged 20 years or above, who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2004. Macronutrient intake was assessed based on a 24-h dietary recall interview. Six individual OCPs commonly detected among the general population were evaluated as markers of OCPs and other coexisting lipophilic chemicals stored in adipose tissue and released into circulation. High fat intake was associated with lower concentrations of OCPs, while high carbohydrate intake showed the opposite result. When three types of fats were individually evaluated, both saturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids, but not polyunsaturated fatty acids, were inversely associated with serum concentrations of OCPs. Adjustment for possible confounders did not change the results. When stratified by age, gender, body mass index, and physical activity, these associations were similar in most subgroups. Thus, similar to the findings observed in animal experimental studies, a moderate-fat diet with low carbohydrate intake was related to low serum concentrations of OCPs in humans. Although these findings need to be replicated, changing dietary macronutrient intake can be investigated as a practical strategy for dealing with unavoidable lipophilic chemical mixtures such as OCPs in modern society.

Little is known about how forests adjust their gas-exchange mode while atmospheric CO₂ rises globally and air quality changes regionally. The present study aims at addressing this research gap for boreal spruce trees growing in three different regions of Canada, submitted to distinct levels of atmospheric emissions, by examining the amount of carbon gained per unit of water lost in trees, i.e., the intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE).Under pristine air quality conditions, middle-to long-term trends passed from no-reaction mode to passive strategies due to atmospheric CO₂, and short-term iWUE variations mostly ensue from year-to-year climatic conditions. In contrast, in trees exposed to pollutants from a copper smelter and an oil-sands mining region, air quality deterioration generated swift, long-term iWUE rises immediately at the onset of operations. In this case, the very active foliar strategy sharply reduced the intra-foliar CO₂ (Ci) pressure. Statistical modeling allowed identifying emissions as the main trigger for the iWUE swift shifts; subsequent combined effects of emissions and rising CO₂ led to passive foliar modes in the recent decades, and short-term variations due to climatic conditions appeared all along the series.Overall, boreal trees under different regional conditions modified their foliar strategies mostly without changing their stem growth. These findings underline the potential of acidifying emissions for prompting major iWUE increases due to lowering the stomatal apertures in leaves, and the combined influence of rising CO₂ in modulating other foliar responses. A fallout of this research is that degrading air quality may create true divergences in the relationship between tree-ring isotopes and climatic conditions, an impact to consider prior to using isotopic series for paleo-climatic modeling.

Antibiotic resistance surveillance data is lacking in many parts of the world, limiting effective therapy and management of resistance development. Analysis of urban wastewater, which contains bacteria from thousands of individuals, opens up possibilities to generate informative surveillance data in a standardized and resource-efficient way. Here, we evaluate the relationship between antibiotic resistance prevalence in E. coli from wastewater and clinical samples by studying countries with different resistance situations as assessed by traditional clinical surveillance. Composite, influent wastewater samples were collected over 24 h from treatment plants serving major cities in ten European countries. Using a broth screening method, resistance to six antibiotic classes was analyzed for 2507 E. coli isolates (n = 247–252 per country). Resistance prevalence in wastewater E. coli was compared to that in clinical E. coli reported by the European Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance Network. Resistance prevalence was lower in wastewater than clinical E. coli but followed similar geographic trends. Significant relationships were found for resistance to aminopenicillins (R² = 0.72, p = 0.0019) and fluoroquinolones (R² = 0.62, p = 0.0072), but not for aminoglycosides (R² = 0.13, p = 0.31) and third-generation cephalosporins (R² = 0.00, p = 0.99) where regression analyses were based on considerably fewer resistant isolates. When all four antibiotic classes were taken into account, the relationship was strong (R² = 0.85, p < 0.0001). Carbapenem resistance was rare in both wastewater and clinical isolates. Wastewater monitoring shows promise as method for generating surveillance data reflecting the clinical prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Such data may become especially valuable in regions where clinical surveillance is currently limited.
