A nonparametric approach to filling gaps in satellite-retrieved aerosol optical depth for estimating ambient PM2.5 levels النص الكامل

Satellite-retrieved aerosol optical depth (AOD) is commonly used to estimate ambient levels of fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅), though it is important to mitigate the estimation bias of PM₂.₅ due to gaps in satellite-retrieved AOD. A nonparametric approach with two random-forest submodels is proposed to estimate PM₂.₅ levels by filling gaps in satellite-retrieved AOD. This novel approach was employed to estimate the spatiotemporal distribution of daily PM₂.₅ levels during 2013–2015 in the Sichuan Basin of Southwest China, where the coverage rate of composite AOD retrieved by the Terra and Aqua satellites was only 11.7%. Based on the retrieved AOD and various covariates (including meteorological conditions and land use types), the first random-forest submodel (named AOD-submodel) was trained to fill the gaps in the AOD dataset, giving a cross-validation R² of 0.95. Subsequently, the second random-forest submodel (named PM₂.₅-submodel) was trained to estimate the PM₂.₅ levels for unmonitored areas/days based on the gap-filled AOD, ground-monitored PM₂.₅ levels, and the covariates, and achieved a cross-validation R² of 0.86. By comparing the complete and incomplete (i.e., without the days when AOD data were missing) estimates, we found that the monthly PM₂.₅ levels could be overestimated by 34.6% if the PM₂.₅ values coincident with AOD gaps were not considered. The newly developed approach is valuable for deriving the complete spatiotemporal distribution of daily PM₂.₅ from incomplete remote-sensing data, which is essential for air quality management and human exposure assessment.

Recently, a novel method for carbon capture and storage has been proposed, which converts gaseous CO2 into aqueous bicarbonate ions (HCO3−), allowing it to be deposited into the ocean. This alkalinization method could be used to dispose large amounts of CO2 without acidifying seawater pH, but there is no information on the potential adverse effects of consequently elevated HCO3− concentrations on marine organisms. In this study, we evaluated the ecotoxicological effects of elevated concentrations of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) (max 193 mM) on 10 marine organisms. We found species-specific ecotoxicological effects of elevated DIC on marine organisms, with EC50-DIC (causing 50% inhibition) of 11–85 mM. The tentative criteria for protecting 80% of individuals of marine organisms are suggested to be pH 7.8 and 11 mM DIC, based on acidification data previously documented and alkalinization data newly obtained from this study. Overall, the results of this study are useful for providing baseline information on ecotoxicological effects of elevated DIC on marine organisms. More complementary studies are needed on the alkalinization method to determine DIC effects on seawater chemistry and marine organisms.

Lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT) is a widely used broad-spectrum pyrethroid insecticide and is expected to cause deleterious effects on the male reproductive system. However, the effects of LCT on Leydig cell development during puberty are unclear. The current study addressed these effects. Twenty-eight-day-old male Sprague Dawley rats orally received LCT (0, 0.25, 0.5 or 1 mg/kg body weight/day) for 30 days. The levels of serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone, Leydig cell number, and its specific gene and protein expression were determined. LCT exposure lowered serum testosterone levels at doses of 0.5 and 1 mg/kg and luteinizing hormone levels at a dose of 1 mg/kg, but increased follicle-stimulating hormone levels at doses of 0.5 and 1 mg/kg. LCT lowered Star and Hsd3b1 mRNA or their protein levels at a dose of 1 mg/kg. Immature Leydig cells were purified from pubertal rats and treated with different concentrations of LCT for 24 h and medium androgen levels, Leydig cell mRNA and protein levels, the mitochondrial membrane potential (△Ψm), and the apoptotic rate of immature Leydig cells were investigated. LCT inhibited androgen production at 5 μM and downregulated Scarb1 at 0.05 μM, Hsd3b1 and Hsd11b1 at 0.5 μM, and Cyp11a1 at 5 μM. LCT also decreased △Ψm at 0.5 and 50 μM. In conclusion, LCT can influence the function of Leydig cells.

The widespread cultivation of transgenic Bt cotton makes assessing the potential effects of this recombinant crop on non-target organisms a priority. However, the effect of Bt cotton on many insects is currently virtually unknown. The plant bug Adelphocoris suturalis is now a major pest of cotton in southern China and the beetle Haptoncus luteolus is one of the most ancient cotton pollinators. We conducted laboratory experiments to evaluate the toxicity of the Bt cotton varieties ZMSJ, which expresses the toxins Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab, and ZMKCKC, which expresses Cry1Ac and EPSPS, on adult A. suturalis and H. luteolus. No significant increase in the mortality of either species was detected after feeding on Bt cotton leaves or pollen for 7 days. Trace amounts of Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab proteins could be detected in both species but in vitro binding experiments found no evidence of Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab binding proteins. These results demonstrate that feeding on the leaves or pollen of these two Bt cotton varieties has no toxic effects on adult A. suturalis or H. luteolus.

The concentrations, distributions, and bioaccumulation of nine organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) were investigated in both abiotic and biotic media, comprising river water, sediment, and crucian carp. The highest concentrations were observed in liver (6.22–18.1 ng/g ww), and the levels in muscle (4.23–7.75 ng/g ww) and gonad (3.08–7.70 ng/g ww) were similar. In whole blood, tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP; 31.1–256 ng/mL) accounted for 90% of the total OPFR concentration. Distributions of OPFRs differed between biotic and abiotic media, as tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP), and TBOEP were dominant in abiotic media, whereas triethyl phosphate (TEP), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TNBP), TCEP, and TBOEP dominated in crucian carp. The TNBP had remarkable accumulation potential among nine OPFRs, which the TNBP concentrations in muscle increased with increased total length and body weight. The higher perfusion rate of TNBP to female eggs were observed rather than to male gonads as the concentrations were higher in males than in females, while the opposite results were observed in gonad. Moreover, the concentration of TNBP in female muscle began to decrease near maximum growth as a sexually dimorphic difference in crucian carp. This is the first study to simultaneously investigate the fate of OPFRs in biotic and abiotic media and to show sex differences.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical. Studies have shown that the exposure to BPA is associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) during adolescent development. However the direct clinical evidence is limited. To investigate the possible association between environmental BPA exposure and the altered behavior of children, a case-control study was conducted with children aged 6–12 years in Guangzhou, China. Two hundred fifteen children diagnosed with ADHD and 253 healthy children from Guangzhou were recruited as the case and control groups, respectively. Urinary BPA and 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG, a biomarker of oxidative DNA damage) concentrations were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem spectrometry. The results showed that concentrations of urinary BPA for the case group were significantly higher than those for the control group (3.44 vs 1.70 μg/L; 4.63 vs 1.71 μg/g Crt. p < .001). A stepwise increase in the odds ratios for ADHD was observed with the increasing quartiles of children's urinary BPA (first quartile: reference category; second quartile adjusted OR: 1.79, 95% CI: 0.95–3.37; third quartile adjusted OR: 7.44, 95% CI: 3.91–14.1; fourth quartile adjusted OR: 9.41, 95% CI: 4.91–18.1). When the BPA levels were stratified by gender, the odds of ADHD among boys and girls increased significantly with urinary BPA concentrations (adjusted OR: 4.58, 95% CI: 2.84–7.37; adjusted OR: 2.83, 95% CI: 1.17–6.84). Urinary 8-OHdG concentrations in the ADHD children were significantly higher than those in the control group. Furthermore, the linear regression analysis results indicated that a significant relationship existed between BPA exposure and 8-OHdG levels (R = 0.257, p < .001). Our findings provide direct evidence that childhood BPA exposure may be related to ADHD and 8-OHdG concentrations for children. Moreover, BPA exposure could increase the higher occurrence of ADHD for boy than for girls.

We conducted an exposure experiment with Diffusive Gradients in Thin- Films (DGT), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas), and yellow lampmussel (Lampsilis cariosa) to estimate bioavailability and bioaccumulation of Cu. We hypothesized that Cu concentrations measured by DGT can be used to predict Cu accumulation in aquatic animals and alterations of water chemistry can affect DGT's predict ability. Three water chemistries (control soft water, hard water, and addition of natural organic matter (NOM)) and three Cu concentrations (0, 30, and 60 μg/L) were selected, so nine Cu-water chemistry combinations were used. NOM addition treatments resulted in decreased concentrations of DGT-measured Cu and free Cu ion predicted by Biotic Ligand Model (BLM). Both hard water and NOM addition treatments had reduced concentrations of Cu ion and Cu-dissolved organic matter complexes compared to other treatments. DGT-measured Cu concentrations were linearly correlated to fish accumulated Cu, but not to mussel accumulated Cu. Concentrations of bioavailable Cu predicted by BLM, the species complexed with biotic ligands of aquatic organisms and, was highly correlated to DGT-measured Cu. In general, DGT-measured Cu fit Cu accumulations in fish, and this passive sampling technique is acceptable at predicting Cu concentrations in fish in waters with low NOM concentrations.

Indoor air samples were collected from private homes and various occupational indoor environments using passive air sampler and analysed for fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) and cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (cVMSs). The aim was to investigate their occurrence in indoor air, factors that may affect their presence and human daily exposure dose (DED) via inhalation. In general, levels of cVMSs were 3–4 orders of magnitude greater than the other compound classes. OPFRs concentration was found significantly higher than BFRs in indoor air. The most abundant compounds in each chemical class were 8:2 FTOH, 2,4,6-TBP, TNBP and TCEP and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5). Home samples contained higher level of FTOHs, BFRs and cVMSs than occupational environments, whereas concentration of OPFRs in office samples were higher. BFRs concentrations were significantly correlated with building age and with the number of electronic/electrical devices at the sampling sites. Moreover, significantly lower levels of FTOHs and cVMSs were observed in rooms with forced-ventilation system. Estimated DED via inhalation was significantly higher at home than in office and the total DED was on average 3–5 orders of magnitude lower than the reference value.

Assessment of the impact of pharmaceutical residues on living organisms is a very complex subject. Apart from taking into account the toxicity of individual compounds, environmental factors should also be taken into account. In this paper, attempts were made to assess the impact of coexisting inorganic ions and changes in pH on the toxicity of ten selected pharmaceuticals. Two bioassays were used to measure the estrogenic and androgenic effects (XenoScreen YES/YAS – Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and acute toxicity (Microtox® – Vibrio fischeri).The Microtox® test gave the most definitive outputs concerning the determination of interaction type between drugs and chemical species. Synergism was proven for almost all drugs and chemical species, and only two cases of antagonism were found. Significant drug/pH interactions were rare.Regarding the XenoScreen YES/YAS bioassay, when estrogenic and androgenic agonistic effects (YES+ and YAS+, respectively) were studied, many cases of well-expressed synergism for all inorganic ions with limited number of drugs (diazepam, fluoxetine, estrone, chloramphenicol for the YES+ test and diazepam, progesterone, androstenedione, and estrone for the YAS+ test) were found. Antagonism was also proven for the YES+ test, especially for diclofenac and androstenedione interacting with cations. On the other hand, the YES- and YAS- tests (estrogenic and androgenic, respectively, antagonistic effects) did not indicate cases of synergetic interaction except for the couples Br−/diazepam and NH4+/ketoprofen. Antagonistic drug/ion interactions were detected only with diclofenac and fluoxetine. It is interesting that well-expressed (antagonism or synergism) drug/pH interactions were rare.Both tests were found utilizable in performing studies on impact of ions/pH fluctuations on drugs mixtures' toxicity confirming in most cases synergic impact of parameters studied on toxicity. The approach proposed in the paper seems to be proven as a reliable tool in assessing impact of abiotic factors on toxicity and endocrine potential of complex mixtures of pharmaceuticals' mixtures.

A comprehensive study was carried out from central part of Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP; at Kanpur) to understand abundance, temporal variability, processes (secondary formation and fog-processing) and source-apportionment of PM₁-bound species (PM₁: particulate matter of aerodynamic diameter ≤ 1.0 μm) during wintertime. A total of 50 PM₁ samples were collected of which 33 samples represent submicron aerosol characteristics under non-foggy condition whereas 17 samples represent characteristics under thick foggy condition. PM₁ mass concentration during non-foggy episodes varied from 24–393 (Avg.: 247) μg m⁻³, whereas during foggy condition it ranged from 42–243 (Avg.: 107) μg m⁻³. With respect to non-foggy condition, the foggy conditions were associated with higher contribution of PM₁-bound organic matter (OM, by 23%). However, lower fractional contribution of SO₄²⁻, NO₃⁻ and NH₄⁺ during foggy conditions is attributable to wet-scavenging owing to their high affinity to water. Significant influence of fog-processing on organic aerosols composition is also reflected by co-enhancement in OC/EC and WSOC/OC ratio during foggy condition. A reduction by 5% in mineral dust fraction under foggy condition is associated with a parallel decrease in PM₁ mass concentration. However, mass fraction of elemental carbon (EC) looks quite similar (≈3% of PM₁) but the mass absorption efficiency (MAE) of EC is higher by 30% during foggy episodes. Thus, it is evident from this study that fog-processing leads to quite significant enhancement in OM (23%) contribution (and MAE of EC) with nearly equal and parallel decrease in SO₄²⁻, NO₃⁻ and NH₄⁺ and mineral dust fractions (totaling to 24%). Characteristic features of mineral dust remain similar under foggy and non-foggy conditions; inferred from similar ratios of Fe/Al (≈0.3), Ca/Al (0.35) and Mg/Al (0.22). Positive matrix factorization (PMF) resolves seven sources: biomass burning (19.4%), coal combustion (1.1%), vehicular emission (3%), industrial activities (6.1%), leather tanneries (4%), secondary transformations (46.2%) and mineral dust (20.2%).
