We examined the emissions of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and coal dust from trains in the Columbia River Gorge (CRG) in Washington State by measuring PM1, PM2.5, CO2, and black carbon (BC) during the summer of 2014. We also used video cameras to identify the train type and speed.During the two-month period, we identified 293 freight trains and 74 coal trains that gave a PM2.5 enhancement of more than 3.0 μg/m3. We found an average PM2.5 enhancements of 8.8 and 16.7 μg/m3, respectively, for freight and coal trains. For most freight trains (52%), and a smaller fraction of coal trains (11%), we found a good correlation between PM2.5 and CO2. Using this correlation, we calculated a mean DPM emission factor (EF) of 1.2 gm/kg fuel consumed, with an uncertainty of 20%.For four coal trains, the videos revealed large plumes of coal dust emanating from the uncovered coal cars. These trains also had the highest peak PM2.5 concentrations recorded during our study (53–232 μg/m3). Trains with visible coal dust were observed for 5.4% of all coal trains, but 10.3% when the effective wind speed was greater than 90 km/h. We also found that nearly all coal trains emit coal dust based on (1) statistically higher PM2.5 enhancements from coal trains compared to freight trains; (2) the fact that most coal trains showed a weak correlation between PM2.5 and CO2, whereas most freight trains showed a strong relationship; (3) a statistically lower BC/PM2.5 enhancement ratio for coal trains compared to freight trains; and (4) a statistically lower PM1/PM2.5 enhancement ratio for coal trains compared to freight trains. Our results demonstrate that, on average, passage of a diesel powered open-top coal train result in nearly twice as much respirable PM2.5 compared to passage of a diesel-powered freight train.

Urban air quality management plan (UAQMP) is an effective and efficient tool employed in managing acceptable urban air quality. However, the UAQM practices are specific to a country’s needs and requirements. Majority of the developed countries have full–fledged UAQMP with a regulatory management framework. However, developing countries are still working in formulating the effective and efficient UAQMPs to manage their deteriorating urban air environment. The first step in the process of formulation of UAQMP is to identify the air quality control regions based on ambient air quality status and second, initiate a time bound program involving all stakeholders to develop UAQMPs. The successful implementation of UAQMPs depends on the strength of its key components, e.g. goal/objective, monitoring network, emission inventory, air quality modeling, control strategies and public participation. This paper presents a comprehensive review on UAQMPs, being implemented worldwide at different scales e.g., national (macro), city (medium), and local (micro).

Godowitch, James M. | Gilliam, Robert C. | Roselle, Shawn J.
The four–dimensional data assimilation (FDDA) technique in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) meteorological model has recently undergone an important update from the original version. Previous evaluation results have demonstrated that the updated FDDA approach in WRF provides more accurate wind fields aloft than the original approach, particularly during the nocturnal period when low level jets are a common feature in the Eastern United States. Due to the importance of WRF/FDDA meteorological fields in retrospective air quality applications, a modeling study with the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model was undertaken to ascertain if the improved wind flow fields translate into better performance for ozone. To undertake this objective, separate CMAQ model simulations were performed with meteorological inputs generated by WRF using the original and the updated FDDA approaches for a three month summer period. The evaluation effort focused on observed and modeled surface ozone from a mid–morning hour (10 local daylight time (LDT)). Comparisons of modeled results against concentrations aloft from an instrumented tall tower and from available morning vertical profile measurements were also examined. Surface concentrations near 10 LDT are desirable for evaluating the transport process since they are often representative of ozone that has been transported aloft overnight and has undergone downward entrainment in response to convective mixing the following morning. Statistical results from surface observed and modeled concentration pairs indicated modeled ozone from the CMAQ simulation using the updated FDDA meteorology displayed smaller biases and lower absolute errors at 88% and 80% of monitoring sites, respectively, in the Eastern United States. The CMAQ results with the updated FDDA generally exhibited smaller biases and lower absolute errors at monitoring sites across the northern states than in the southeastern states. The results provide evidence that the more accurate wind flows generated with the updated WRF/FDDA approach improved CMAQ model performance based on the statistical results from 10 LDT ozone concentrations.

A nitrous oxide (N2O) emission database was compiled for arable land (284 measurements from 62 studies) to establish predictive models for building a greenhouse gas emission inventory in China. Arable lands were grouped into dry land and rice paddy based on the IPCC 2006 guidelines. The results of the meta analysis show that the annual mean N2O fluxes from dry land and rice paddy were 4.69±4.62 (SD) and 5.89±3.23kg N2O–N ha–1 yr–1. Fertilizer–induced N2O emission factors were 0.68±0.41% for dry land, and 0.49±0.43% for rice paddy. The relationship between N2O flux from arable lands and various environmental variables were analyzed, and the magnitude of N2O emissions from zero mineral N addition control plots (background emission) was determined based on precipitation. Based on the above background emissions and correlation coefficients, two new predictive models were established to estimate N2O emissions from arable lands in China. Comparison showed that the precipitation–rectified background emissions could largely improve the model predictions, and the two new models had better performance than the 1996 IPCC guideline method. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that the important local environmental variables be included in the estimates when compiling a national N2O emission inventory.

The colourless mat covering organically enriched sediments underlying an intensive salmon farm in Estero Pichicolo, southern Chile, was surveyed by combined 454 PyroTag and conventional Sanger sequencing of 16S/18S ribosomal RNA genes for Bacteria and Eukarya. The mat was dominated by the sulphide-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) Candidatus Isobeggiatoa, Candidatus Parabeggiatoa and Arcobacter. By order of their abundances, sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were represented by diverse deltaproteobacterial Desulfobacteraceae, but also within Desulfobulbaceae, Desulfuromonadaceae and Desulfovibrionaceae. The eukaryotic PyroTags were dominated by polychaetes, copepods and nematodes, however, ciliated protozoans were highly abundant in microscopy observations, and were represented by the genera Condylostoma, Loxophyllum and Peritromus. Finally, the abundant Sulfurimonas/Sulfurovum also suggest the occurrence of zero-valence sulphur oxidation, probably derived from Beggiatoaceae as a result of bacteriovorus infaunal activity or generated as free S0 by the Arcobacter bacteria. The survey suggests an intense and complex sulphur cycle within the surface of salmon-farm impacted sediments.

Distributions of trace metals (TM), organic carbon, SPM and physico-chemical parameters were studied in the highly stratified Krka River estuary in winter/summer periods. The non-conservative behaviour of Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu in the brackish layer (plume), easily spotted due to very low inputs by the river, was mainly caused by their inputs from the pleasure boats, nautical marinas and harbour (e.g. release from antifouling paints). Contrarily, Ni and Co followed near-conservative behaviour. The extremely low SPM discharged by the river, resulted in a predominant dissolved fraction (>80%) of all TM, except Pb. Vertical scavenging, coupled with the long residence time, caused accumulation and progressive upstream increase of TM and SPM in the bottom seawater. Decrease of distribution coefficient (KD) in the brackish layer for winter period was ascribed to the change of SPM nature (terrestrial vs. biogenic), whereas a variable and increased biogenic component of SPM caused scattered KDs in summer.

Nickel and chromium accumulation from the air in Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) is presented in this paper. Plants were exposed at five sites varying in environmental characteristics. Four one-month series were performed during the 2011 and 2012 growing seasons. Chromium and nickel concentrations in leaves were analysed after every series and compared to control plants. The lowest levels of both trace elements were found in samples collected from control sites. Canonical variate analysis revealed differences among sites and the control, and on this basis we found the lowest values in the suburban area. The lowest trace element concentrations of Cr in leaves were observed at the beginning of the growing season and the highest from mid-June to mid-August, while Ni concentrations varied among series and years. Accumulation of both trace elements in Italian ryegrass was at a comparable level or lower than results obtained in similar investigations in other countries. Moreover, the higher concentrations of both elements were probably connected with increased traffic and elevated small industry activities in urban and rural areas.

As a consequence of the growing global demand of energy supplies, intense oil and gas exploration and exploitation programs have been carried out worldwide especially within the marine environments. The release of oil-derived compounds in the sea from anthropogenic sources both as effluents or accidental spill is perceived as a major environmental concern. An approach based on a combination of biomarkers and the distribution of some classes of environmentally relevant pollutants was used to investigate the occurrence of a stress syndrome in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) collected at three gas platforms placed in two distinct oceanographic districts within the Adriatic Sea. Biological responses were integrated by a ranking algorithm which demonstrated both a range of biological effects reflecting exposure gradients and a temporal related trend in the investigated responses. The overall results demonstrate a moderate to absent pollution from studied gas platforms with low but remarkable biological disturbance in sentinel organisms.

This study analysed the levels of androgen receptor antagonist activity in extracts of coastal sediments sampled from estuaries in southern UK and northern France. Anti-androgenic (AA) activity varied between <0.2 and 224.3±38.4μg flutamide equivalents/g dry weight of sediment and was significantly correlated with the total organic carbon and silt content of samples. AA activity was detected in tissues extracts of clams, Scrobicularia plana, sampled from a contaminated estuary, some of which was due to uptake of a series of 4 or 5 ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Initial studies also indicated that fractionated extracts of male, but not female, clams also contained androgen receptor agonist activity due to the presence of dihydrotestosterone in tissues. This study reveals widespread contamination of coastal sediments of the Transmanche region with anti-androgenic compounds and these contaminants should be investigated for their potential to disrupt sexual differentiation in aquatic organisms.

The influence of environmental parameters on the total and pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus seasonal densities in American oysters (Crassostrea virginica) was evaluated for 1year. Harvesting site A yielded the highest mean densities of V. parahaemolyticus tlh+, tdh+/trh−, tdh−/trh+ and tdh+/trh+ during spring season at 2.57, 1.74, 0.36, and −0.40 log10MPN/g, respectively, and tdh+/orf8+ during winter season (0.90 log10MPN/g). V. parahaemolyticus tlh+ densities were associated to salinity (R2=0.372, P<0.022), tdh+/trh+ to turbidity (R2=0.597, P<0.035), and orf8+ to temperature, salinity, and pH (R2=0.964, P<0.001). The exposure to salinity and temperature conditions during winter and spring seasons regulated the dynamics of V. parahaemolyticus harboring potentially pathogenic genotypes within the oyster. The adaptive response of V. parahaemolyticus to seasonal environmental changes may lead to an increase in survival and virulence, threatening the seafood safety and increasing the risk of illness.
