Propolis is a special resin and wax material collected from the leaves and shells of trees, buds and shoots of plants by honey bees (Apis mellifera L.). In recent years, many researchers have studied the chemical composition, biological activity and pharmacological properties of propolis. The colour, odour and pharmacological properties of the propolis composition also vary as the composition changes depending on the plant, region, season and bee colony. Flavonoids, aromatic acids, phenolic acids and esters are the main compounds responsible for the biological activity of propolis. A number of studies have been conducted on the use of propolis or its active ingredients in the treatment of cancer. It has been observed that the use of propolis did not cause side effects according to in-vitro and in-vivo studies. Propolis should be extracted with different compounds for use in biological assays. The most commonly used compounds for extraction are ethanol, methanol, oil and water. A number of studies have been carried out showing the antitumor effect of propolis in cell culture and animal tests. The search for new drugs derived from natural products, which may function as chemotherapeutic agents and have low side effects, has increased in recent years. Combination with antioxidant therapy may improve the side effects of chemotherapy on leukocytes, liver and kidney, thus increasing the effect of chemotherapy with dose increase.

The extraction process of peanut oil has been a major concern for local processors due to the difficult task it constitutes during processing. The use of oil expellers has been found to reduce the difficulty in this task yet different processing factors tend to affect the efficiency of those oil expellers. In this study, the optimum peanut oil processing factors and their interaction were investigated using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with fractional factorial design (33) model of Central Composite Design (CCD). Processing factors such as Moisture Content (10, 12, and 14% db), Peanut Temperature (50, 65, and 80°C), and Water Quantity added during extraction (12, 14, and 16 ml). This aimed at providing the optimum parameter needed to obtain the optimum oil yield using a peanut oil expeller. From this study, it was observed that all three factors considered affecting the oil yield of peanuts during extraction. Only water quantity added during extraction is statistically different. The optimum condition of the oil extraction processing parameter was observed at 50oC, 10 db, and 120 ml. The correlation coefficient (R-squared) of the model analysis was found to be 0.8901.

In this study, conducted on the selection of the most suitable method of determining the available sulfur content of soils where cotton is grown in the Coastal Aegean Region of Türkiye, soil and leaf samples were taken from a total of 40 cotton plantations in five different locations in the Coastal Aegean Region and Gediz Basin. Various physical and chemical characteristics of the soil’s samples, which were taken from a depth of 0-30 cm, were determined, and the available sulfur contents were determined with the use of seven different extraction solutions. The extraction method or methods by which the highest correlation or correlations were obtained between the available sulfur content of the soils and leaf sulfur contents of the plants in the same plantation were assessed as the most suitable methods. According to the results of the study, the highest soil-leaf correlation was obtained by soil extraction with Ca(H2PO4)2 solution, followed, in order, by the NH4OAc, KH2PO4, cold water and NaCl methods. No significant correlation was found between the amounts of sulfur determined by extraction with CaCl2 and KCl solutions and leaf sulfur contents. It was concluded that the most suitable methods for the determination of available sulfur in the soils of the Aegean Coastal Region where cotton is grown were the extraction methods using Ca(H2PO4)2 and NH4OAc solutions.

In this study, pectin was extracted by acid extraction method from pomegranate peel. The temperature, time and particle size which affected pectin yield were optimized using response surface method. As a result of optimization, optimum conditions for pectin extraction from pomegranate peel were determined as 468-568 µm for particle size, 82°C for temperature and 47,5 minutes for extraction time. After the extraction at optimum conditions pectin yield was found to be 25,96%. In addition, pectin that was produced had equivalent weight of 488,01 mg, methoxyl content of 5,74%, the degree of esterification of 47,43%and anhydrogalacturonic acid content of 68,64%. The results showed that the obtained pectin was low methoxyl pectin.

The quality of black seed oil depends greatly on the extraction method used. Traditional methods like cold pressing are valued for producing high-quality oil that retains its natural nutrients and flavor. However, these methods often come with a trade-off, as they tend to yield less oil and lower levels of bioactive compounds, making them less efficient for large-scale production. To overcome these limitations, seed pretreatment techniques were investigated. In this study, black seeds were subjected to freeze-thaw and microwave pre-treatment before cold pressing to increase the content of thymoquinone, which is a key bioactive compound in black seeds. For the freeze-thaw treatment, black seeds were frozen at -17 °C for 24 and 48 h, followed by thawing at 50 °C for 1 h. This process was repeated for 1, 2, and 3 cycles. Microwave treatment involved subjecting seed samples to microwave at a frequency of 2450 MHz and power levels of 400 W and 640 W for durations of 1, 2, and 3 min. Subsequent oil extraction was performed by using cold pressing. HPLC analysis showed a significant increase in thymoquinone content with freeze-thawed seeds (for 48 h and 3 cycles) showing a remarkable increase like 79.93% according to untreated black seeds. Microwave-pretreated seeds at 640 W for 3 min exhibited more than double thymoquinone content compared to untreated seeds. Other quality parameters, including moisture, specific gravity, acidity, peroxide value, and iodine value, shows comparable characteristics, while significant enhancing the sensory analysis of the pretreated oil (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that freeze-thaw and microwave pretreatments can serve as innovative methods for enhancing thymoquinone levels in Indian black seed oil, providing a promising avenue for improving the overall quality of this valuable natural product.
