An Assessment of Nutritional Deficiency Symptoms in the Tea Plant (Camellia sinensis L.) Through Field Survey

The most important factor in both plant development and productivity, which mostly depends on nutrient availability in the soil and environment, is the constituents of soil nutrients. Soil is always losing its nutrients by leaching, surface runoff as well as through harvesting and cultural operations like: pruning. For maintaining the balance of agricultural ecosystem fertilizer application is necessary to improve soil condition and gain better yield. In case of tea industry for maintaining better and uniform production applying fertilizer is a widespread management technique in worldwide. Tea requires a lot of macro and micronutrients for growth because it cannot be grown without the usage of fertilizer and other nutrient supplies. The purpose of this field survey was to ascertain the nutritional condition of tea leaves as well as the signs of nutrient deficiencies in tea plants. In this study, deficiency symptoms of the essential nutrients were found out at different tea estates of Moulvibazar and Sylhet districts as well as photographs were taken. Photographs of the nutrient deficient tea plants were correlated with the established symptoms. The range of total nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and zinc content in the collected tea leaf samples were 2.95- 5.18%, 0.28- 0.49%, 0.56-1.88%, 0.12-0.49%, 0.07-0.08% and 0.002- 0.004%, respectively.

In the study, the impact of employing vermicompost to boost oil rose (Rosa damascena Mill.), a native of Isparta province, to improve yield and nutrient content, was explored. Four different doses (V0: 0 kg ha-1, V1: 1000 kg ha-1, V2: 2000 kg ha-1, and V3: 3000 kg ha-1) of vermicompost were tested in the field conditions at 3 replicates. Vermicompost was applied to the canopy projection area and incorporated into the soil. Flower harvest was started on April 30, 2018, and throughout 20 days, the blooming flowers were collected and weighed daily basis. Following the harvest, leaf samples were collected from the plants, and the concentrations of certain macro and micronutrients were assessed.The study's findings demonstrated that applying vermicompost boosted the yield of oily rose blooms. The greatest yield value was determined to be 5850 kg ha-1 at a vermicompost dose of 2000 kg ha-1, which was 660 kg ha-1 greater than the control application. It was observed that vermicompost treatments had no significant influence on plant nutrient concentrations. This condition is assumed to be related to the removal of minerals from the plant during harvest. The findings indicate that the usage of vermicompost can contribute in the production of oil roses, and a dose of 2000 kg ha-1 can be suggested. This research establishes the feasibility of employing vermicompost in oil rose cultivation and sets the framework for future research.

Vermicompost products have gained a great importance in plant nutrition over the years. They are reported to have plant growth promoting effects both in horticulture and field crops. The nutritional value and chemical properties of vermicomposts highly depend on the feedstock used in their production. The aim of this study was to evaluate vermicompost manure, derived from the mixture of cattle manure and kitchen scraps, on seed germination and growth of tomato seedlings (Lycopersicon lycopersicum Mill.). Four solid vermicompost amendment rates of 0, 10, 20, and 30% were applied in plastic trays. Vermicompost application delayed and reduced seed emergence in all application rates, while in general, vermicompost substitution promoted growth tomato seedlings up to 20% of application rate. The results showed that vermicompost substitutions greater than 20% had adverse effects on seedling emergence and seedling growth parameters, which was attributed to high EC of vermicompost induced by cattle manure. Results suggest that both physical and chemical properties of the feedstock used for vermicompost production should be taken into consideration in order to sustain high vermicompost quality to ensure targeted plant growth for horticultural and agricultural purposes.
