The objective of this work was to evaluate the development and production of semi-noble garlic cultivars subjected to different bulb-seed pre-planting vernalization periods in two municipalities (Barauna and Governador Dix-sept Rosado) of the Western Mesoregion of Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. Therefore, two simultaneous experiments were conducted, from April to November, 2012. A complete randomized block experimental design was used with four replications. The treatments were arranged in split-plot design, with the plots consisted of cultivars (Gigante-do-Nucleo and BRS-Hozan) and subplots consisted of bulb-seed pre-planting vernalization (4±1°C) periods (0, 10, 20 and 30 days). In Barauna, the cultivar Gigante-do-Nucleo proved to be adapted, with a yield of 4.56 Mg ha-1 without vernalization, while the BRS-Hozan presented a yield of 4.42 Mg ha-1 when vernalizated for 10 days at pre-planting. In Governador Dix-sept Rosado, the vernalization of 10 days improved the adaptation of both cultivars, however, with no significant yield increases. The use of vernalization improved adaptation of cultivars in the planting locations, facilitating the emergence of plants, increasing plant height and number of leaves, however, not promoting significant yield increases, therefore, this technology should not be used for produce this type of garlic in this region.

RESUMO: Com o presente estudo, objetivou-se avaliar o desenvolvimento e a produção de cultivares de alho semi-nobre, submetidas a diferentes períodos de vernalização pré-plantio dos bulbos-semente em dois municípios da Mesorregião Oeste Potiguar. A pesquisa constou de dois experimentos desenvolvidos, simultaneamente, em Baraúna/RN e Governador Dix-sept Rosado/RN, entre os meses de abril e novembro de 2012. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos completos casualizados com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram dispostos em parcelas subdivididas, sendo as parcelas representadas pelas cultivares Gigante do Núcleo e BRS Hozan e as subparcelas constituídas pelos períodos de vernalização pré-plantio dos bulbos-semente a 4 ± 1 ºC: 0, 10, 20 e 30 dias. Em Baraúna, a cultivar Gigante do Núcleo mostrou-se adaptada, apresentando uma produtividade de 4,56 t ha-1 sem o uso da vernalização, enquanto a cultivar BRS Hozan obteve uma produtividade de 4,42 t ha-1 quando vernalizada por 10 dias em pré-plantio. Em Governador Dix-sept Rosado, a vernalização de até 10 dias melhorou a adaptação de ambas as cultivares, entretanto, sem aumentos significativos na produtividade. The objective of this work was to assess the effects of the release and establishment of the exotic parasitoid Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead, 1905) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and its interspecific competitive relationship with native fruit fly parasitoids in organic and conventional orchards in Maceio, State of Alagoas, Brazil. The exotic parasitoids were reared in the Radio - Entomology Laboratory of the Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture, University of São Paulo, Piracicaba, São Paulo, and released (112,350 individuals between five and eight days old) in orchards from June 8 to July12, 2013.Fruit samples were collected randomly every week during one year to assess the D. longicaudata recaptured from plants and fallen fruits on the ground, which were taken to the Entomology Laboratory of the CECA - UFAL, classified and individually placed in plastic containers, containing a layer of 1 cm of sand for pupation of the host larvae. The pupae, obtained after 10 days, were placed in Petri dishes with a layer of sand until the emergence of adults, which were then kept in plastic microtubes, containing ethanol 70%. The release of exotic parasitoids did not displace native species. The same species were found before and after the release in both cultures: Doryctobracon areolatus , Asobara anastrephae , Utetes anastrephae and Opius bellus (Braconidae), Aganaspis pelleranoi (Figitidae) and individuals of the Pteromalidae family. One year after the last release, 44 individuals of the exotic parasitoid were found, showing its establishment in the studied areas.

The aim of the present study is to assess the antibacterial potential of plants from the Caatinga biome of the semi-arid region of Pernambuco, against Staphylococcus spp. isolates from cases of subclinical mastitis in small ruminants, such as goats and ewes. Ethanolic extracts of the following plants from the Caatinga biome were used: Encholirium spectabile Mart., Bromelia laciniosa Mart., Neoglaziovia variegata Mez., Amburana cearensis (Fr. Allem.) A.C.Smith, Hymenaea martiana Hayne, and Selaginella convoluta Spring. The presence of phenolic components, flavonoids, steroids, and terpenoids was verified for all the tested extracts. The mean minimal bactericide concentrations of the extracts of E. spectabile, B. laciniosa, and N. variegate were 11,379, 11,405, and 11,995 μg/mL, respectively. The highest inhibitory activities were observed for A. cearensis and H. martiana, which inhibited 88.1 and 99.4% of the isolates, respectively. Other studies focusing on in vitro and in vivo activities should be undertaken.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the tolerance of fruits of different banana cultivars to low temperature storages. Fruits of the cultivars Nanicão (AAA), Prata (AAB), Vitória (AAAB), Maçã (AAB) and Caipira (AAA) were used. Clusters of three fruits were kept in cold storage for 7, 14 and 21 days, with average temperature of 10.53±0.37°C and relative humidity of 85%. Subsequently, the clusters were transferred to temperatures of 22±0.39°C and evaluated for 16 days. The fruits of all cultivars remained green after 21 days of storage at 10.53±0.37°C. Fruits of the cultivar Nanicão did not completely ripened after transferred to the 22°C storage, when stored for 7 days at low temperature. These fruits were firmer, with green peel and low soluble solids and titratable acidity. The fruits of all cultivars complete the ripening when transferred to room temperature after 21 days of cold storage. Chilling injuries increased with cold storage time in all cultivars. The cultivars Nanicão, Caipira and Maçã had more symptoms of chilling injury, while Prata and Vitória were more tolerant to the cold storage (10.53°C) for up to 21 days, showing normal ripening after transferred to the 22±0.39°C storage.

Foram utilizados frutos das bananas Nanicão (AAA), Prata (AAB), Vitória (AAAB), Maçã (AAB) e Caipira (AAA). Utilizaram-se buquês com três frutos, mantidos em câmara fria por 7, 14 e 21 dias, com temperatura média de 10,53±0,37°C e umidade relativa do ar de 85%. Posteriormente, os buquês foram transferidos para a temperatura de 22±0,39°C e avaliados por 16 dias. Os frutos dos cultivares estudados peraneceram verdes após 21 dias de armazenamento a 10,53±0,37°C. Frutos do Nanicão não completaram o amadurecimento após serem transferidos para a temperatura de 22°C, quando armazenados por 7 dias à baixa temperatura, apresentando frutos mais firmes, com casca verde, baixos teores de sólidos solúveis e acidez titulável. Após 21 dias de armazenamento refrigerado, os frutos de todos os cultivares completaram o amadurecimento, depois de transferidos para temperatura ambiente. Os danos por frio aumentaram com o avanço do tempo de armazenamento refrigerado, para todos os cultivares. Nanicão, Caipira e Maçã apresentaram sintomas mais evidentes de dano por frio. As bananas Prata e Vitória mostraram-se mais tolerantes ao armazenamento refrigerado na temperatura de 10,53°C por até 21 dias, exibindo amadurecimento normal após a transferência para a temperatura de 22°C.

Os sistemas de irrigação por gotejamento se destacam para a aplicação de águas residuárias, devido à minimização das perdas de água, dos riscos ambientais e de saúde pública, porém a obstrução dos emissores representa um problema potencial dessa tecnologia. Objetivou - se com este trabalho avaliar o coeficiente de variação de vazão (FCV) e o coeficiente de uniformidade estatístico (Us) de unidades gotejadoras abastecidas com percolado de aterro sanitário diluído em água de abastecimento. O experimento foi conduzido sob delineamento inteiramente casualizado no esquema de parcelas subdivididas, tendo nas parcelas os tipos de gotejadores (G1 não autocompensante; e G2, G3 e G4 autocompensantes) e nas subparcelas os tempos de avaliação (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140 e 160 horas), com quatro repetições. Os valores de FCV, CSU e das características físico - químicas e biológicas do percolado de aterro sanitário diluído foram determinadas a cada 20 horas, até completar 160 horas de operação das unidades gotejadoras. A bioincrustação proporcionou maiores alterações nos valores de FCV e CSU da unidade gotejadora com gotejador G1 (não autocompensante) em relação às unidades dotadas dos gotejadores G2, G3 e G4 (autocompensantes). O gotejador G3 foi o mais adequado na aplicação do percolado de aterro sanitário diluído.

O gotejador G3 foi o mais adequado na aplicação do percolado de aterro sanitário diluído. | ABSTRACT: Drip irrigation systems stand out for the use of wastewater, by minimizing water losses and risks to the environment and public health, however, the clogging of emitters is a potential problem in this technology. The objective of this study was to evaluate the flow coefficient of variation (FCV) and the coefficient of statistical uniformity (CSU) of drip irrigation units operating with water-diluted landfill leachate. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized split-plot design, with emitter types in the plots (G1 - non-pressure compensating, and G2, G3 and G4 - pressure compensating) and evaluation times in the subplots (0, 20, 40, 60 80, 100, 120, 140 and 160 hours), with four replications. The FCV, CSU and physicochemical and biological characteristic values of the dilute landfill leachate were determined every 20 hours to complete 160 hours of operation of the drip units. The biofouling caused major value changes in the FCV and the CSU of the drip unit with the G1 emitter (non-pressure compensating) compared to the units with the G2, G3 and G4 emitters (pressure compensating). The G3 emitter was the most adequate for applying the dilute landfill leachate.

Cupuaçu ( Theobroma grandiflorum Schum.) is an exotic fruit with a promising economic potential, particularly due to its strong aroma and creamy texture. This study aimed to produce sweetened cupuaçu puree and evaluate the effects of packaging corrosion on its sensory properties and shelf - life in tinplated cans. After 240 days of storage, the commercially sterile product had average sensory analysis scores of 5.89 ± 0.21, 5.39 ± 0.30, 5.45 ± 0.21 and 5.49 ± 0.25, for appearance, aroma, flavor and overall appreciation, respectively. Sensory acceptance scores did not change during storage (p>0.05). Corrosion potential and low tin and iron levels in the product, which are parameters used to evaluate food - packaging interaction, demonstrated the product remained food - safe throughout its shelf - life. Tinplate is a promising packaging material for sweetened cupuaçu puree due to its mechanical and protective properties. Furthermore, tin plating is an economically viable food technology to extend the shelf - life of cupuaçu products and expand its domestic and international markets.

The cultivation of Litopenaeus vannamei has increased in inland areas by using low salinity waters. Cultivation techniques in coastal waters are well developed, however, studies for low salinity conditions are needed, especially regarding the ideal ionic composition of water and its effects on the zootechnical indices. Brazil has adopted this strategy and the semiarid region showed great potential due to its favorable climate and water conditions. Thus, experimental cultivations were conducted in Serra Talhada, State of Pernambuco, in order to evaluate the influence of two feeding strategies (with and without feeding) and three cultivation densities (5, 10 and 15 shrimps m-2), on the production variables of this species. Three ponds of 280 m2 were built, in which six nursery nets of 20 m2 were installed. The cultivation was performed with juvenile shrimps of 8.53 g and lasted 50 days. The animals were fed twice a day with commercial feed containing 25% of crude protein. The water quality (salinity ~1.0 g L-1, temperature ~28.09°C, pH ~8.48) and the shrimp growth were monitored with weekly biometry during the cultivation. A significant difference was found only in the treatment without feeding with 15 shrimps m-2, the average final weight of all treatments ranged from 13.16±1.33 g to 15.50±1.66 g. The survival rates were high in the treatments with feeding and its variation between treatments was 60.56±6.76% and 83.00±4.00%.

As técnicas de cultivo em águas costeiras já estão bastante desenvolvidas, porém em condições de baixa salinidade são necessários vários estudos, como a composição iônica ideal da água e seus efeitos sobre os índices zootécnicos. O Brasil tem adotado essa estratégia e o semiárido surge como uma região de grande potencial, já que dispõe de clima e condições hídricas favoráveis. Desta forma, cultivos experimentais foram realizados no município de Serra Talhada - PE, com o objetivo de avaliar a influência de duas estratégias de alimentação (com e sem ração) e três densidades de cultivo (5, 10 e 15 camarões.m-2), nas variáveis de produção dessa espécie. Para tanto foram utilizados três viveiros escavados de 280 m2, onde foram instalados seis cercados de telas medindo 20 m2. A estocagem foi realizada com juvenis de 8,53 g, o cultivo teve duração de 50 dias e os animais foram alimentados duas vezes por dia com ração comercial, contendo 25% de proteína bruta, monitorada a qualidade da água (salinidade±1,0 g.L-1; temperatura ± 28,09ºC; pH ± 8,48; entre outros) e crescimento dos camarões durante o cultivo, com biometrias semanais. Foi detectada diferença significativa apenas no tratamento sem ração com 15 camarões.m-2, o peso médio final entre todos os tratamentos variou de 13,16±1,33 g a 15,50±1,66 g. As taxas de sobrevivências foram melhores nos tratamentos com ração, a variação entre os tratamentos foi de 60,56±6,76% e 83,00±4,00%.

A significant increase in the use of integrated farming systems have been observed in the Brazilian Cerrado, such as crop - livestock integration (CLI), which combined with the no - tillage system (NTS) have shown significant influence on soil properties. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of a CLI system on the chemical, physical and microbiological soil characteristics, in an area in the Cerrado biome, Montividiu, State of Goias, Brazil. The soil fertility, remaining phosphorus (Prem), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (Nt), aggregate stability (geometric mean diameter – GMD), microbial respiration (C - CO 2 ) and easily - extractable glomalin - related soil protein (EE - GRSP) were evaluated. Soil samples were collected at depth of 0 - 5 and 5 - 10 cm in three areas with: CLI (13 years of annual rotation with Urochloa ruziziensis ); Urochloa decumbens pasture (15 years of implementation); and native Cerrado vegetation. The CLI area had higher pH, Mg, P available (0 - 10 cm) and Prem (5 - 10 cm) values compared to the other areas, and equal values of TOC, Nt, EE - GRSP (0 - 10 cm) and aggregate stability (5 - 10 cm) compared to the pasture area. The CLI had no differences in C - CO 2 emissions compared to the Cerrado, but had lower rates compared to the pasture. The P available and Prem were sensitive indicators to show the differences between the CLI and pasture systems, with higher contents in the CLI area. The TOC and Nt indicators had no differences between these two systems. The GMD results indicated a better aggregation in the pasture (0 - 5 cm) compared to the CLI area, while the EE - GRSP were similar in these areas. The total values of C - CO 2 emission from the soil aggregates showed the stability of respirometry rates in the CLI and Cerrado areas.

The total values of C-CO2 emission from the soil aggregates showed the stability of respirometry rates in the CLI and Cerrado areas. | RESUMO No Cerrado brasileiro têm-se observado um aumento na adoção de sistemas integrados de cultivo, como a integração lavoura-pecuária (ILP), aliada ao sistema de plantio direto (SPD), os quais vêm exercendo considerável influência nos atributos do solo. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência do sistema de integração lavoura-pecuária (ILP) sob alguns atributos químicos, físicos e microbiológicos do solo sob Cerrado, Montividiu, Goiás. Foram avaliados a fertilidade do solo, fósforo remanescente (Prem), carbono orgânico total (COT), nitrogênio total (Nt), estabilidade de agregados (diâmetro médio geométrico - DMG), respiração microbiana (C-CO2) e a proteína do solo relacionada à glomalina - facilmente extraível (PSRG-FE). Coletaram-se amostras de solo nas profundidades de 0-5 e 5-10 cm, em três áreas: ILP (13 anos de rotação anual com Urochloa ruziziensis); pastagem de U. decumbens (15 anos de implantação); e Cerrado nativo. A área de ILP apresentou maiores valores de pH, Mg, P disponível (0-10 cm) e Prem (5-10 cm) que as demais áreas, e valores similares de COT, Nt, PSRG-FE (0-10 cm) e estabilidade de agregados (5-10 cm) à área de pastagem. A ILP não alterou as emissões de C-CO2 em relação ao Cerrado, mas reduziu essas taxas em relação à pastagem. O Pava e Prem foram indicadores sensíveis para evidenciar diferenças entre os sistemas de ILP e pastagem, com níveis mais elevados no ILP. Enquanto os indicadores COT e NT não mostraram diferenças entre estes dois sistemas. O DMG indicou maior agregação na pastagem (0-5 cm) em comparação com a ILP, enquanto a PSRG-FE não mostrou diferenças entre essas áreas. A emissão de C-CO2 indicou estabilidade nas taxas de respirometria no ILP e no Cerrado.

This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal activity of methanol extract and fractions of leaves of Randia nitida (Kunth) DC on Colletotrichum truncatum (Schw.) Andrus & Moore, Rhizoctonia solani Kühn and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) De Bary and perform chemical and antioxidant activity tests. Crude methanol extract (EBM) and fractions (hexane = FHX, dichloromethane = FDM and ethyl acetate = FAE) underwent classical phytochemical analysis and determination of total phenols, flavonoids and antioxidant activity. Samples were individually incorporated into PDA culture mediums (potato-dextrose-agar) at concentrations of 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160 μg mL - 1 of extract or fraction. Mycelial growth was evaluated when control reached the edge of the plate. Phytochemical results indicated that flavonoids, steroids and triterpenoids are the major chemical constituents in both EBM and fractions. Total phenols, flavonoids and antioxidant activity were higher for FAE and EBM, followed by FDM and FHX; however, the latter showed higher content of steroids and triterpenoids compared to the other fractions. For C. truncatum , R. solani and S. sclerotiorum , the most efficient fractions were respectively FAE, FDM and FHX, all of them in the highest concentration (160 μg mL - 1 ). The highest inhibition rate was observed against S. sclerotiorum , reaching 93.75%. We concluded that all fractions have antifungal activity on the plant pathogens, being FHX the most active against S. sclerotiorum , which might have been due to the presence of steroids and triterpenes.
