The State of Rio Grande do Norte is the largest exporter of muskmelons in Brazil and producers, in general, use irrigation water of different levels of salinity (ECw). However, in the region there is little information available on the effect of salinity of the water on the absorption of nutrients by the melon crop. Therefore, objective of this research was to study the extraction and accumulation of nutrients to in two varieties of melon (Orange Flesh and Goldex), irrigated with water of low (0.80 dS m-1) and high (3.02 dS m-1) salinity. The study was conducted from October to December, 2003, in Red Latosol of medium texture at the Fazenda Santa Julia (Latitude 5o 02' 0,0" S, Longitude 37o 22" 33,6" WGr.), in the municipality of Mossoró, RN, Brazil. The experimental design adapted was in random blocks with four replications. Largest accumulation of dry matter was found in the fruit in the aerial part after 63 days of sowing, representing 59.17% and 74.53 (Orange Flesh and Goldex) in the condition of low electrical conductivity (0.80 dS m-1) and 70.50 and 67.27% in cultivars Orange Flesh and Goldex, respectively, for high electrical conductivity (3.02 dS m-1). The application of saline water (3.02 dS m-1) reduces the content of potassium in cultivar Goldex by 39%.

The work had as objective to evaluate the germination of seeds of sugar apple (Annona squamosa L.), submitted the treatments daily pre-germinative, under controlled conditions. One evaluated the percentage of germination and the index of germination speed (IVG), using the delineation entirely casualizado with four repetitions of 25 seeds, in factorial project 2x5, being the factor scarification mechanics in two levels (with and without scarification) and factor imbibition in five levels: water, Stimulate® the 20 mL L-1, acid giberélico 50 and 750 GA3 mg L-1, all absorbing for 12 hours, and a treatment without imbibition. The scarification mechanics was carried through with sandpaper for wood. The results had shown that the scarification mechanics separately, did not make possible the overcoming of the dormancy in seeds of sugar apple. Significant alterations with the use of the sandpaper had been verified with the embebição of seeds scarification in water and Stimulate®, with increases of 22 and 43 %, respectively. The scarification with sandpaper revealed unnecessary with the imbibitions of the seeds in 750 dosages of 50 and mg L- 1 of acid gibberellic, with percentage of germination varying of 83 and 98%. The Stimulate®, in the used concentration, was inferior to the GA3 use, providing, however, increase of 43 % in relation to the germination of scarification seeds, without imbibitions the biggest indices of germination speed had been verified in the treatments with GA3, observing itself rise of the values with the increase of the dosage of acid gibberellic, and also with the use of the sandpaper.

Thirty-six females (of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and ¿ 4th partum order) were used, and evaluated at four stages of lactation (equalization, 7th and 14th day of lactation, and at weaning) to verify the effects that partum order and lactation stage had on the performance of hybrid swine sows maintained in a hot environment (room temperature at 28.5ºC; black globe temperature at 29.3ºC; relative air humidity at 75.7% and ITGU calculated at 78.9). Interaction among the factors was observed for food consumption, and the primiparas consumed less. The sows presented differences (P<0,05) in performance (corporal weight, bacon thickness, visual corporal score, corporal composition and tissue) according to partum order, without effect on the weaning-estrus interval or the duration of the estrus. The lactation stage had a negative influence on weight and estimated corporal protein. This study concluded that hybrid swine sows maintained satisfactory performance, and that primiparous sows were more sensitive to hot environments.

The word had the aim to evaluate vegetative growing of manicoba function of two management systems, three densities and four plant cuttings. It had been used randomized blocks an sub-divided with factorial (2x3x4) with 5 repetition, being two of management systems (with/without camalhao) and 3 densities of planting (6666; 3333 and 2500 plants/ha) and to sub-parcels four heights (5, 15, 30 and 45 cm). Analyzed variable were: plant height (PLHE), broting number (BRNU), dry matter production (Kg/ha), and ratio leaf/brunch (L/B). Management system and planting density do not manicoba with medium value of 114.4 cm. BRNU increased (P<0.01) with planting cut height of 45 cm and as consequence production increasement of DM of leaves total. Ratio L/B was altered by management system, planting density, cutting height, keeping bigger than other. Among evaluated treatments, cutting height was affected vegetative growing and consequently phitomass accumulation and DM production.

The objective of this trial was to economically compare a sugarcane plus soybean meal diet with diets containing sugarcane supplemented with increasing levels of a 9:1 premix of urea and ammonium sulphate (0.4, 0.8% and 1.2%). Cows were maintained in tie stalls and were fed ad libitum twice a day. The forage to concentrate ratio in the beginning of the experiment was 55:45 supplemented with 1 kg/day of concentrate for each 2 kg of milk produced. Animals were blocked by days in milk and randomly assigned to treatments in three replicated 4 x 4 Latin squares. The average prices of feedstuffs in the state of Minas Gerais during the year of 2004 were used in the economical analyses. Supplementation of sugarcane with 1.2% of urea plus ammonium sulphate appears to be best the best economical compromise for lactating dairy cows producing up to 20 kg of milk per day.

This research avollue the efficiency of Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) plus other alternatives to control rot of melons. The trials were carried out at Embrapa Agroindústria Tropical located in Fortaleza, Ceara state, Brazil. Cantaloupe melons, hybrid 'Vera Cruz', were harvested from Dinamarca Indústria Agricola farm, located in the 304 BR km 38 - Nova Betânia - Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte State. Fruits were sorted for uniformity, rinsed with alcohol 70%, inoculated with Fusarium pallidoroseum, and assembled for treatments with 600ppb of 1-methyiciclopropene (1- MCP); 1, 2 or 3g of Potassium permanganate; Carnauba wax; and Funginat (a blend essential oil). Five fruits were placed per box, and each box taken as a repetition. Fruits were also divided into two lots: not packed and packed in Xtend. Vermiculite sachets impregnated with potassium permanganate (KMnO4) were distributed according to the weight of the fruits in each box. Upon treatments, fruits were stored under low temperature, 3 ± 2°C, and relative humidity of 85 ± 2% for 14 days. After that period, fruit packages and boxes were removed from storage, low temperature and room temperature (23 ± 2°C and 90 ± 2% RH), respectively. Evaluations were loss of mass and grading from 15th to 18th day of storage. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial system 5x2, being five treatments (1- MCP, KMnO4, Carnaúba wax, Funginat, and control fruits), and two modified atmospheres (with and without X-tend). Results on disease incidence were written in percentage per box, transformed into arc sine and degrees of quadrant. The analysis of variance was performed with the aid of the ESTAT - System for Statistics Analysis, version 1.0, UNESP. Results showed significant difference principally regarding the use of packaging, suggesting that the use of modified atmosphere affects the quality of melons by increasing fruit shelf life. It has been also concluded that association of modified atmosphere with other postharvest technologies may increase modified atmosphere efficiency.

Aiming the characterization of genotypes and estimate the genetic divergence through morphological markers of the sweet-potato, an experiment was developed, in the year 2007, in the municipality of Junqueiro, in the Alagoas State, composed of nine clones and two local varieties, in the randomized complete block design with three replications. Were evaluated fourteen characteristics of the aerial part and seven of the roots through morphological descriptors. For the assessment of genetic divergence was used the methodology of the principal components made by the group and the methodology of Tocher. It was wide phenotypic variability among genotypes based on morphological markers. The results showed that the first three components of the variables of aerial part explain 77.08% and in the first two components of the root system of variables explain 72.13% of the variability exists. Six groups were formed, being that group I restrained three genotypes, the groups II, III and IV have been formed by two genotypes each, and the groups V and VI contain a genotype each. The results indicate; using the two methodologies, have wide phenotypic and genotypic variation among genotypes of sweet potato-based on morphological descriptors, indicating prospects for the breeding program of this culture.
