Bio-accumulation of pesticide residues in water through food chains

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of organochlorine insecticide residues were conducted in water, sediment, aquatic plants and animals from 3 freshwater reservoirs. Ninety water samples, 90 sediment samples, 397 aquatic plants samples and 121 aquatic animals samples were collected during March-April and August-September 1989. There were about 14 kinds of aquatic plants, such as water hyacinth, water lettuce, algae and water lilly etc. Aquatic animals are fish, shrimps and snails, but most of them are fish. They are striped snake-head fish, carp and catfish etc. Total samples of 698 were analyzed by using gas chromatographic techniques at Agricultural Toxic Substances Division. The results indicated that 5 kinds of insecticides were found in most samples. They were lindane, heptachlor, aldrin, dieldrin, DDT and derivatives. Dieldrin was detected at higher concentration and found in all samples. The residue level of dieldrin ranged from 0.01-0.12 ppb in water, 0.005-0.036 ppm in sediment, 0.001-0.138 ppm in aquatic plants and 0.001-0.037 ppm in aquatic animals respectively. The accumulation of dieldrin residue in water and aquatic plant samples from all reservoirs are not different but the level of dieldrin residue in sediment samples from Bueng Boraphed is higher than the other 2 reservoris. However the levels of dieldrin residue in sediment, aquatic plant and aquatic animal samples higher than those in water samples respectively.

Thyme oil in water nanomulsion was prepared under subcritical water conditions using water and saponin, as solvent and emulsifier, respectively. Gas chromatography revealed that there were 44 bioactive components in the extracted thyme essential oil which, thymol and carvacrol were two mains of them. Experiments were designed based on central composite design and effects of amounts of saponin and thyme essential oil were evaluated on particle size, polydispersity index (PDI) and zeta potential of the prepared nanoemulsions using response surface methodology. Obtained results revealed that more desirable thyme oil nanoemulsions with minimum particle size (184.51 nm) and PDI (0.514), and maximum zeta potential (− 22.51 mV) were prepared using 0.94 g of saponin and 0.28 mL of thyme essential oil. Furthermore, results indicated that prepared nanoemulsion using obtained optimum production conditions had relatively high antioxidant activity (24%) and high antibacterial and antifungal activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Penicillium digitatum.

Aquaculture, which is growing 3–5 times faster than terrestrial agriculture, will play an important role to meet future global food production needs. However, over 80% of global sewage production is returned to the environment untreated or poorly treated. In developing nations, these nontraditional waters of diverse quality are being recycled for aquaculture, yet chemical residues are differentially studied. Here, we examined pharmaceuticals, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and flame retardants in marine bivalves using isotope dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and low-pressure gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LP GC-MS/MS). Green-lipped mussels from the field and oysters from aquaculture net pens, which are harvested as food products, were collected adjacent to point source municipal wastewater and landfill leachate effluent discharges, respectively, in Hong Kong, the fourth most densely populated country in the world. Multiple classes of pharmaceutical, pesticides, PAHs, and phosphorus-based flame retardants were detected at low μg/kg levels. Acceptable servings per week indicated minimal risk for a number of chemicals; however, such calculations could not be performed for other contaminants of emerging concern. Future efforts are needed to better understand contaminant influences on marine bivalve populations and aquaculture product safety, particularly in rapidly urbanizing regions of developing countries with limited wastewater infrastructure.

Options were explored for fulfilling the legally required safety assessment for a widely applied epoxy/amine coating used for restoring corroded domestic drinking water supply systems. The coating was made up of two components mixed shortly before application, the first mainly consisting of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE), the second of various amines. The analytically identified starting substances were all authorised, but only constituted a small proportion of the low molecular mass material left after curing and potentially migrating into water. Reaction products synthesised from constituents of the starting components (expected oligomers) could not be eluted from GC even after derivatisation, indicating that standard GC-MS screening would miss most potential migrants. They were detectable by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) after acetylation. HPLC with MS or fluorescence detection was possible for constituents including a BADGE moiety, but phenalkamines could not be detected with adequate sensitivity. Possibilities for determining long-term migration relevant for chronic toxicity are discussed. Analysis in water shortly after application of the coating overestimates migration if migration decreases over time and requires detection limits far out of reach. Analysis of a solvent extract of the coating is easier and provides an upper estimate of what could migrate into the drinking water over the years. However, to satisfy the regulatory requirements, components of the complex mixture need to be identified at lower proportions than those accessible. In vitro testing of the whole mixture for genotoxicity is expected to fail because of the required sensitivity and the glycidyl functions probably wrongly resulting in positive tests. The difficulties in dealing with this situation are discussed.

Novel porous covalent organic framework (COF) based on condensation reaction between cyanuric chloride, 4,4′-ethylendianiline, and 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride was synthesized via sealed tube condition. The results COF was used as a new adsorbent for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) for extracting trifluralin and chlorpyrifos from vegetables, fruit samples, and wastewater. Gas chromatograph with a corona discharge-ion mobility spectrometer as the detector was also used for analyzing the target analytes. Some parameters that affected the extraction, such as stirring rate, time and temperature of extraction and pH were investigated, exhaustively. The detection limits were 0.13, and 0.15 µg/L and the linear ranges of 0.45–20 and 0.50–25 µg/L with a linearity coefficient of 0.9965 and 0.9987 were also obtained for trifluralin and chlorpyrifos, respectively. The method was applied successfully to analyze some real samples of cucumber, carrot, grape, and agriculture wastewater, and the results showed a relative recovery in the range of 87% to 110%.
