Production, processing and marketing of plum and plum products in Hungary

The plum cultivation has been one of the most important of the Hungarian fruit growing for decades. The early plum production is on the second place after the apple, with more than 100 thousand tons. The fluctuation of the early plum crop was between 125 and 93 thousand tons from 1990 to 1999. The propagation rate of the plum varieties in the Hungarian nurseries in 1998: Stanley 25.6%, Cacanska lepotica 22.7%, Bluefre 12.3%, Besztercei clones 10.6%, Althan 6.3%, Cacanska rodna 4.7%, President 4.6%, Debreceni muskotaly 3.9%, Sermina 2.8%, other 8 varieties (Agen, Cacanska rana, Cacanska najbolja, Ruth Gerstetter, Monfort, Tuleu gras, Utility, Zold ringlo) together 6.5%. From the yearly crop approximately 15% goes to fresh export, 5% to processed export, and another 10-15% to the distilling industry. 55-65% goes to fresh market. About 15-20% of the early crop is canned and deep frozen.
