Comparative in vitro efficacy of kefir produced from camel, goat, ewe and cow milk on Haemonchus contortus النص الكامل

One of the great challenges of veterinary parasitology is the search for alternative methods for controlling gastrointestinal parasites in small ruminants. Milk kefir is a traditional source of probiotic, with great therapeutic potential. The objective of this study was to investigate the anthelmintic effects of kefir on the abomasal nematode Haemonchus contortus from sheep. The study used camel, goat, ewe and cow milk as a starting material, to produce camel, goat, cow and ewe milk kefir. All kefirs showed a significant concentration-dependent effect on H. contortus egg hatching at all tested concentrations. The highest inhibition (100%) of eggs was observed with camel milk kefir at a concentration 0.125 mg/ml. In relation to the effect of kefirs on the survival of adult parasites, all kefirs induced concentration-dependent mortality in adults, with variable results. The complete mortality (100%) of adults of H. contortus occurred at concentrations in the range 0.25–2 mg/ml. The highest inhibition of motility (100%) of worms was observed after 8 h post exposure with camel milk kefir at 0.25 mg/ml. These findings indicate that kefir can be considered a potential tool to control haemonchosis in sheep. Further investigations are needed to assess the active molecules in kefir responsible for its anthelmintic properties and to investigate similar in vivo effects.

Field experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Farm, Banaras Hindu University during winter seasons of 2014–15 and 2015–16 to evaluate the effect of herbicides alone or as mixture with or without nonionic surfactant on broad-leaf weeds in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Post-emergence application of premix formulation of metsulfuron-methyl + carfentrazone-ethyl at 25 g/ha + surfactant at 0.2% proved most effective against Anagalis arvensis L., Chenopodium album L., Melilotus alba L., Solanum nigrum L. and Rumex dentatus L. Maximum reduction in population and dry weight of weeds, and higher weed control efficiency (63.2%), yield attributes and yield (3.5 t/ha) of barley were recorded in metsulfuron-methyl + carfentrazone-ethyl at 25 g/ha + surfactant at 0.2% applied as post-emergence.

A trial was conducted for a period of 42 days to assess the comparative efficacy of the herbal and synthetic lysine on the performance of broilers. A total of 160 day old Vencobb broiler male chicks were divided into five groups each group having four replicates of eight birds. The birds in group T1 were fed standard ration without herbal and synthetic source (Control), T2 (25% herbal lysine: 75% synthetic lysine, T3 (50% herballysine: 50% synthetic lysine), T4 (75% herbal lysine: 25% synthetic lysine) and T5 (100% herbal lysine). The higher weight gain (2135±48) and better feed efficiency (1.734±0.059) was found in T3 when compared to control and other treatment groups. Dressing percentage, heart, liver, kidney, gizzard weight, abdominal fat and intestinal length did not vary among the groups. Albumin, albumin: globulin ratio, triglycerides, totalcholesterol, HDL, LDL, AST and ALT status of the birds were comparable with the control. The liver and breast muscle lipid content was lower in treatment T 2 as compared to control (T1) whereas in thigh, it was high. Supplementation of herbal and synthetic lysine at 50: 50 was found to provide better returns (` 2.12 per kg) over that of control. Therefore, it could be concluded that supplementation of herbal and synthetic lysine (50: 50) in broiler diet improved the performance of birds and reduced the feed cost per unit weight gain.

Studies were conducted to examine the efficacy of fifteen medicinal plants against common microbial (bacterial and fungal) fish pathogens. Crude extracts were prepared from these medicinal plants and applied to the fresh culture of pre-isolated bacterial (Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Edwardsiella tarda) and fungal pathogens (Aphanomyces invadans, Saprolegnia sp. and Achlya sp.) under in-vitro condition. A high dose was initially used to detect antimicrobial effects of these plants and garlic, turmeric, neem, shoti, akand etc. were screened out strong and moderate effective on the pathogens. In the case of bacterial pathogens, strong inhibitory response was exhibited by garlic and mixed extract of akand + neem; followed by turmeric and akand. Four different doses of plants extract were exposed under the in-vitro condition to determine minimum inhibitory dose (MID). However, garlic offered the best result with 93.33 ± 3.33% recovery of challenged fish (Barbonymus gonionotus) in aquarium trial. Akand + neem, turmeric and akand showed moderate to weak recovery rate with the same dose. In the case of fungi, in-vitro test on the individual culture was done at four pre-selected doses. Treatment trial was performed using the minimum inhibitory dose (MID) of the highly effective plants (viz., turmeric, shoti, neem + turmeric and neem shoti) on experimental infected of fish. Turmeric (80.00 ± 1.15% recovery rate) and neem + turmeric (80.00 ± 2.88% recovery rate) were found to be the most effective plants. These could be used as an effective, low-cost and alternative disease control measure in fish health management.
